Fast & Furious gets a Peacock series, Bradley Cooper joins G.I. Joe and Sony brings AI-powered image upscaling to the base PS5.
Thursday brought major movement for two franchises that Hollywood has spent years trying to figure out how to extend.
Peacock officially ordered Fast & Furious to series, while Paramount found an unexpected combination for its next G.I. Joe movie with Bradley Cooper starring and Danny McBride directing. Sony also announced a significant upgrade for millions of existing PlayStation 5 consoles, American Horror Story delivered a franchise streaming record, and two smaller gaming stories illustrated both sides of the industry right now: one ambitious sequel getting additional development time and another respected studio closing its doors.
It’s the Bandwagon Nerds News Report for October 2, 2026!
Fast & Furious Is Officially Becoming a TV Series
Peacock has officially ordered a live-action Fast & Furious television series after Universal first revealed development of the project earlier this year. The series is targeting a 2028 premiere, expanding a franchise that will also return to theaters with Fast Forever.
Mike Daniels and Wolfe Coleman are attached to the television project, which gives Universal another way to continue the Fast universe as the theatrical saga approaches another major transition. The movies have already generated more than $7 billion worldwide, making television an obvious territory that the franchise somehow managed to avoid throughout its first 25 years.
The interesting question is what Fast & Furious television actually looks like. Trying to reproduce the enormous action sequences of the later films every week would become expensive very quickly, but returning to the street-racing, crime and undercover roots of the early movies could give the series an identity of its own.
That might ultimately be healthier than attempting to make every episode feel like a smaller Fast movie. The franchise became famous for escalation, but television gives Universal an opportunity to remember that Fast & Furious originally worked because audiences cared about the crew before anyone started launching cars into increasingly impossible situations.
Bradley Cooper Will Star in Danny McBride’s G.I. Joe Movie
Bradley Cooper has signed on to star in Paramount’s next live-action G.I. Joe movie, which will be directed by Danny McBride. McBride also co-wrote the screenplay, putting one of Hollywood’s stranger recent director-star combinations behind another attempt to rebuild the franchise.
The G.I. Joe movies have never completely disappeared, but Paramount has struggled to find a version that generates sustained momentum. The Rise of Cobra arrived in 2009, Retaliation followed in 2013 and Snake Eyes attempted another reset in 2021 without establishing a durable new series.
McBride may be the most intriguing part of this development. His work with David Gordon Green on Halloween demonstrated that his writing interests stretch well beyond comedy, and G.I. Joe gives him an entirely different kind of established property to reinterpret.
Cooper also changes the expectations immediately. This no longer sounds like Paramount quietly attempting another franchise revival; it sounds like the studio is assembling enough recognizable talent to make G.I. Joe a significant theatrical project again.
Sony Brings AI Upscaling to the Standard PS5
Sony is bringing a new AI-powered image-upscaling technology called Quick Spectral Super Resolution to the standard PlayStation 5. The technology is derived from PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, which previously required the additional hardware available in PlayStation 5 Pro.
Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei are the first games receiving support, with developers able to incorporate QSSR into future titles. Sony says the streamlined system is designed to improve image detail and stability without requiring players to upgrade to PS5 Pro hardware.
This is the kind of platform improvement that matters because it changes what existing hardware can do years after launch. Console generations historically depended heavily on developers simply becoming better at using fixed specifications, while machine-learning techniques are opening another path for improving visual quality without physically replacing the box.
Sony still needs PS5 Pro to justify its premium position, so QSSR will not suddenly make the two machines equivalent. Giving the standard PS5 a version of technology originally positioned as a Pro advantage does make the base console more capable, though, and millions of existing owners benefit without buying anything new.
American Horror Story 13 Sets a Franchise Streaming Record
American Horror Story: 13 delivered the strongest streaming premiere of any season in the franchise’s history following its three-episode launch. The season brought back a large collection of performers and characters from earlier chapters of the anthology, including Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters.
That makes the aggressive nostalgia strategy look considerably less risky than it did on paper. Season 13 has leaned heavily into connections with Murder House, Coven, Hotel and other previous stories rather than establishing another completely isolated world.
There was always a danger that bringing back this many characters would make the season feel like an anniversary reunion rather than an actual story. The early audience response suggests the opposite problem may have existed: viewers were waiting for American Horror Story to treat its accumulated mythology like something worth revisiting.
Thirteen seasons is an enormous amount of history for any television franchise. If connecting those worlds gives AHS another creative lane alongside its traditional anthology structure, Season 13 could end up changing how the show operates beyond this particular story.
Reigns Developer Nerial Is Closing After 13 Years
Nerial, the studio behind Reigns, Card Shark and The Crush House, is shutting down after 13 years. Founders François and Tamara Alliot announced that development at the studio is ending following discussions with parent company Devolver Digital.
Nerial released 11 games during its run and became best known for turning the simple left-or-right decision structure of Reigns into an entire series. The format eventually expanded through collaborations involving Game of Thrones, Animal Farm, Three Kingdoms and most recently The Witcher.
The founders emphasized that they are not leaving game development permanently, describing the closure as the end of Nerial rather than the end of their work. The studio’s employees will now be seeking new opportunities while the Alliots take time before deciding what comes next.
Nerial was exactly the kind of studio the modern game business claims to value: relatively small, creatively recognizable and capable of producing games that did not require blockbuster budgets. Its closure is another reminder that having a clear identity and respected catalog does not necessarily make operating a studio sustainable.
Danny Boyle Says the Next 28 Years Later Movie Will Feature Plenty of Cillian Murphy
Danny Boyle says another 28 Years Later movie will happen and that Alex Garland has already written the script. More importantly for longtime followers of the series, Boyle says Cillian Murphy will have a substantial presence in the next installment.
Murphy originated the role of Jim in 28 Days Later, becoming central to a movie that helped redefine modern zombie filmmaking even though its infected technically are not traditional zombies. His return has been one of the largest pieces of connective tissue between the original film and the newer 28 Years Later era.
The franchise does not need Murphy to function, but increasing his role gives the next movie something the previous entries could only hint at: a meaningful connection between the person audiences met at the beginning and the world that exists decades later.
That is much more useful than treating him as another legacy cameo. If Jim is genuinely central to the next story, the film has an opportunity to explore what surviving this world for nearly three decades actually did to the character.
Kena: Scars of Kosmora Moves to 2027
Sony Interactive Entertainment and Ember Lab have delayed Kena: Scars of Kosmora from its planned 2026 window into 2027. Ember Lab says the additional time will allow the studio to polish a game significantly larger in scope than Kena: Bridge of Spirits.
The sequel remains a character-focused linear adventure but expands exploration across the island of Kosmora, where several cultures developed around different elemental traditions. Kena will also travel with a crystalline canine spirit that functions as a mount, assists in combat and helps solve environmental puzzles.
A delay becomes considerably easier to accept when the developer accompanies it with a clear explanation of what is actually growing. Ember Lab is not describing an open-world reinvention of Kena, but it is trying to make the environments, dungeons, traversal and underlying mythology more substantial.
Bridge of Spirits succeeded partly because it knew its scale. The sequel becoming larger without losing that focus is probably a better target than chasing the size of bigger-budget action adventures simply because Sony is now publishing it.
Thursday ended up being a day about franchises trying to find the right size for their next move.
Fast & Furious is expanding onto television rather than relying exclusively on increasingly enormous movies, while Paramount is rebuilding G.I. Joe around an unusually interesting creative team. American Horror Story discovered that looking backward can still produce record streaming numbers, and Sony found a way to improve the standard PS5 instead of reserving every technical advancement for newer hardware.
Then there are Nerial and Ember Lab, two studios illustrating very different realities of modern game development. One is taking additional time to make its next project work; the other reached the point where there will not be another project under its current name.
The entertainment business loves expansion, but bigger only works when the people making the thing are given enough room to survive it.
