Sunrise on the Reaping

Sunrise on the Reaping earns strong first reactions, Smile 3 lands David Bruckner and Nintendo finally dates Witchbrook.

Wednesday delivered a strong combination of franchise momentum, horror news and one of the more useful Nintendo presentations of the fall.

The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping emerged from its first screenings with enthusiastic reactions while Jennifer Lawrence confirmed that Katniss, Peeta and Haymitch will all appear in the prequel’s later timeline. Paramount found a new filmmaker for Smile 3, Nintendo finally gave Witchbrook a release date after years of waiting, and Call of Duty’s newest campaign is laying groundwork for the franchise’s upcoming live-action movie. The games industry also absorbed another round of layoffs at a studio that had just released one of the best-reviewed shooters of the year.

It’s the Bandwagon Nerds News Report for October 29, 2026!

Sunrise on the Reaping Makes a Strong First Impression

The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping screened for its first audiences Wednesday, and the initial reaction was overwhelmingly positive toward both the darker prequel story and Joseph Zada’s performance as young Haymitch Abernathy.

The film adapts Suzanne Collins’ novel about the 50th Hunger Games, the second Quarter Quell, where twice the usual number of tributes are forced into the arena. Zada plays Haymitch 24 years before Katniss Everdeen enters the Games, with Ralph Fiennes as President Snow, Elle Fanning as Effie Trinket, Jesse Plemons as Plutarch Heavensbee and Maya Hawke as Wiress.

Several early reactions compared the film’s place within the franchise to Rogue One, not because the stories resemble one another but because audiences already know the broad outcome before the prequel begins. Haymitch survives the Games, but the real story becomes understanding what survival cost him and why the older character audiences met decades later became so cynical.

Jennifer Lawrence also confirmed Wednesday that she returns as Katniss alongside Josh Hutcherson as Peeta and Woody Harrelson as the older Haymitch. Their material is expected to connect with the book’s post-Mockingjay epilogue, where Haymitch recounts his history to Katniss and Peeta.

That gives Sunrise on the Reaping a cleaner connection to the original films without requiring the entire movie to depend on nostalgia. The younger cast has to carry the tragedy first, and the familiar characters can then provide perspective on what that history means years later.

The Hunger Games has already demonstrated that prequels can work without Katniss at the center. If these early reactions hold once reviews arrive, Sunrise on the Reaping may have found the more difficult thing: a way to make an outcome audiences already know feel tense anyway.

Smile 3 Finds a New Director

David Bruckner will direct Smile 3 for Paramount, taking over from franchise creator Parker Finn.

Finn, who wrote and directed the first two films, remains involved as a producer and developed the framework for the new story. Nick Antosca will write the screenplay, while Temple Hill Entertainment continues producing the franchise.

Bruckner is a particularly interesting choice because his horror résumé includes The Ritual, The Night House and the 2022 Hellraiser reboot. Those films generally lean more heavily into atmosphere, mythology and psychological unease than straightforward jump-scare machinery, which could give the third Smile movie a noticeably different texture without abandoning the premise that made the first two successful.

Handing the directing job to somebody else may also be healthy for the franchise. Smile became a major hit by turning one unnerving visual idea into a supernatural curse, while Smile 2 expanded the scale through its pop-star setting. A third movie needs another reason to exist beyond finding a new person for strangers to grin at.

Finn remaining involved should preserve continuity while Bruckner gets enough room to bring his own instincts to the material. Horror franchises often survive precisely because different filmmakers eventually discover different things to fear inside the same basic concept.

Nintendo Finally Gives Witchbrook a Release Date

Chucklefish’s Witchbrook will launch January 28, 2027 for Nintendo Switch 2 and Switch, finally putting a date on a game that has spent nearly a decade in some stage of development.

The magical life simulator puts players into Witchbrook College before expanding outward into the seaside town of Mossport. Players can attend classes, develop relationships, pursue romance, customize their homes and explore the surrounding world either alone or with as many as three other players online.

Nintendo’s Indie World Showcase included much more than Witchbrook. Dead Cells designer Sébastien Benard’s Tenjutsu is coming to Switch 2 in 2027, physics-based cooperative horror game R.E.P.O. is making the jump to Switch 2, and Celeste co-creator Noel Berry revealed City of None, a new action-puzzle platformer planned for both Switch systems.

Spirit Crossing, the collaborative life-sim MMO from Cozy Grove developer Spry Fox, launches November 16 as a console exclusive on Switch and Switch 2. Sword of the Sea reaches Switch 2 immediately on October 29, while several additional games received demos, dates or new platform announcements.

The showcase was only about 15 minutes long, but it was considerably more useful than a presentation filled with vague “coming soon” windows. Witchbrook getting an actual date after years of anticipation gave Nintendo an obvious headline while the rest of the presentation reinforced how aggressively independent developers are supporting Switch 2.

The original Switch became one of the best platforms for smaller games because portability gave projects another reason to stand out. Nintendo clearly wants that same ecosystem established on Switch 2 before the novelty of the hardware wears off.

Modern Warfare 4 Is Setting Up the Call of Duty Movie

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is doing more than continuing Activision’s military-shooter storyline. The game is also establishing pieces of the continuity Paramount plans to use for its upcoming live-action Call of Duty movie.

The film is being directed by Peter Berg from a screenplay he is writing with Taylor Sheridan and is scheduled for June 2028. Berg has described the movie as a serious war story interested in consequences rather than a heightened comic-book-style adaptation, with the Modern Warfare universe providing its foundation.

That makes the relationship between the game and movie more significant than a conventional adaptation announcement. Modern Warfare 4 can introduce organizations, conflicts and characters years before movie audiences encounter them, effectively allowing Activision and Paramount to build a shared continuity across mediums.

Call of Duty has enough brand recognition that the film does not need to recreate a specific campaign to attract attention. The harder challenge is establishing why this particular military story needs to exist as a movie when audiences have already played dozens of similar operations throughout the games.

Sheridan and Berg are at least approaching it from a direction that makes sense. The franchise has always balanced military spectacle with rhetoric about loyalty, sacrifice and the cost of conflict. A movie has considerably more room to interrogate those ideas if it is willing to slow down enough to let the characters experience them.

The risk will be making something so self-serious that it forgets Call of Duty became popular partly because its campaigns are essentially playable action movies. Finding the line between spectacle and consequence will determine whether this becomes a genuine adaptation or merely another military thriller carrying a very expensive title.

Skydance Locks in Its Television Leadership

Skydance has finalized the leadership structure overseeing television across the newly combined company, putting several familiar Warner Bros. and Paramount executives into defined positions beneath George Cheeks.

Channing Dungey will continue leading Warner Bros. Television Studios while also overseeing the company’s cable networks. David Stapf remains in charge of CBS Studios, Amy Reisenbach continues leading CBS Entertainment and Matt Thunell remains responsible for Skydance Television.

The restructuring is another important step in turning the massive Paramount-Warner Bros. combination from a collection of corporate logos into an actual operating company. HBO and Paramount+ have already begun moving toward shared streaming leadership, while this latest organization establishes who controls many of the studios producing the programming that eventually feeds those platforms.

The encouraging part is that Skydance is retaining executives who already understand the individual operations rather than immediately replacing everybody with one centralized team. Warner Bros. Television and CBS Studios have very different histories, talent relationships and programming pipelines, and treating them as interchangeable would erase much of what made the merger valuable in the first place.

That does not eliminate the possibility of further consolidation. Cost savings remain one of the central promises behind the combination, and every reorganization creates another opportunity to identify overlapping departments.

For now, Skydance is at least defining the people responsible for keeping an enormous amount of television moving while the rest of the corporate structure continues changing around them.

Boltgun 2 Studio Faces Major Layoffs

Auroch Digital has begun a redundancy consultation that could eliminate roughly a quarter of the studio’s workforce despite strong reception for Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2.

The developer cited difficult market conditions and broader uncertainty across the games industry. The studio initially announced the cuts earlier this week, removed the statement and then reposted it Wednesday while employees separately confirmed that redundancy notices had begun going out.

The timing makes the situation especially frustrating. Boltgun 2 has earned overwhelmingly positive feedback from players, while Auroch continues working on post-launch support and the upcoming Warhammer Survivors, which is scheduled to launch November 10.

This has become one of the defining problems of the current game industry: making a successful game no longer guarantees the people who made it will remain employed long enough to build the next one. Studios are being resized around projected future needs, ownership changes and financing conditions rather than simply whether the latest release performed well.

Auroch was acquired less than a year ago by Roundtable Interactive in a deal backed by private-equity firm EMK Capital. The studio says development on its announced projects will continue despite the proposed cuts.

That may reassure players waiting for updates, but it does very little for developers being told their jobs may disappear shortly after shipping something audiences actually liked.

What to Watch Thursday

Thursday has enough going on to justify the section, particularly because American Horror Story: 13 reaches its finale on FX and Hulu after spending the season reconnecting large pieces of the franchise’s mythology.

Season 13 brought Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates and numerous other performers back into a story drawing heavily from earlier seasons. The experiment already paid off commercially, producing the franchise’s strongest streaming premiere and earning an early Season 14 renewal.

Gaming has the bigger release. Phantom Blade Zero launches Thursday for PlayStation 5 and PC after years of trailers built around its extremely fast wuxia combat. S-GAME’s action RPG follows assassin Soul across a dark martial-arts world after he is framed for murder and left with only 66 days to uncover the conspiracy against him.

Sword of the Sea also arrives Thursday on Switch 2 following its Indie World appearance, bringing Giant Squid’s atmospheric Hoversword adventure to Nintendo’s newer hardware.

That gives October one last unusually strong Thursday before Halloween. American Horror Story closes one of its most nostalgia-heavy seasons while Phantom Blade Zero finally gets the opportunity to prove its combat feels as impressive as it has looked.

The Hunger Games is returning to Katniss and Peeta without asking them to dominate Haymitch’s story. Smile is changing directors while keeping its creator involved, and Call of Duty is attempting to make its next game part of the foundation for an entirely different medium.

Nintendo’s showcase offered the smaller-scale version of the same idea. Switch 2 does not need to abandon what made its predecessor successful; it needs to give developers enough new reasons to keep building there.

That may be the healthier version of franchise growth. Not everything needs to be reinvented, but repeating exactly what worked last time eventually stops being growth at all.
