Sony circles a Battlefield movie, Paramount-Warner Bros. becomes Skydance and Disney licenses major franchises to Netflix.

Friday brought one of the more consequential entertainment-business days we have seen recently, but there was plenty happening outside the corporate boardroom.

Sony emerged as the frontrunner for a Battlefield movie built around Christopher McQuarrie and Michael B. Jordan, Disney made the increasingly rare decision to send several recognizable properties to Netflix, and David Ellison revealed what the combined Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery company will actually be called. Gaming also provided two very different Grand Theft Auto stories, while Fox gave its new Baywatch a much clearer identity.

It’s the Bandwagon Nerds News Report for October 3, 2026!

Sony Is Closing In on the Battlefield Movie

Sony Pictures is in talks to acquire the Battlefield movie package, with Christopher McQuarrie attached to write, direct and produce and Michael B. Jordan involved as a producer with the possibility of starring.

The project generated substantial competition before Sony moved into the lead, with Warner Bros. Discovery, Amazon MGM Studios, Universal and Netflix among the companies that reportedly submitted bids. Battlefield has existed as one of Electronic Arts’ largest gaming properties for years, but translating its military sandbox into a movie presents an unusual problem because the franchise does not revolve around one defining hero or storyline.

That might actually make McQuarrie a particularly interesting fit. Battlefield provides recognizable iconography, scale and military action without forcing the filmmakers to reproduce one specific campaign beat for beat.

Jordan’s involvement also raises the project beyond the level of another studio grabbing a video-game trademark and figuring out the rest later. If Sony closes the deal, the combination of McQuarrie and Jordan immediately creates expectations for a legitimate action event rather than a disposable adaptation.

Paramount and Warner Bros. Will Become Skydance

David Ellison announced that the combined Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery company will operate under the Skydance corporate name once the merger closes. The legal change is expected to take effect October 6, with the company’s Class B shares moving to the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker SKYD.

The Paramount and Warner Bros. studio names will remain intact beneath that corporate umbrella. The newly combined company will control an enormous collection of film, television, streaming and news operations that includes Paramount, Warner Bros., CBS, CNN, HBO Max and Paramount+, along with franchises ranging from Harry Potter and DC to Mission: Impossible, Top Gun and Yellowstone.

Choosing Skydance rather than some combination of Paramount and Warner Bros. makes the hierarchy unmistakable. Those century-old Hollywood names remain enormously valuable brands, but the company sitting above them now carries Ellison’s identity.

The more difficult part starts after the naming announcement. The combined operation carries roughly $80 billion in debt while targeting approximately $6 billion in cost savings, meaning the next phase will be defined as much by integration and restructuring as by whatever movies and shows come out of the studios.

Disney Is Sending Percy Jackson, Ice Age and More to Netflix

Disney has reached a licensing agreement that will send a collection of movies and television series to Netflix, including Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Will Trent and all five existing Ice Age movies.

The first two seasons of Percy Jackson will become available globally on Netflix beginning October 4 for a three-month window. The five Ice Age movies will also receive a limited Netflix run ahead of next year’s theatrical release of Ice Age: Boiling Point, while Disney and Pixar titles including Soul, Elio and Raya and the Last Dragon are expected to rotate onto Netflix in various markets beginning in 2027.

The deal is notable because the streaming wars spent years conditioning audiences to think every studio needed to lock its own franchises permanently behind its own subscription service. The economics have pushed the industry back toward licensing, where a property can generate additional revenue while still ultimately belonging to its original platform.

Percy Jackson may be the most interesting example. Disney+ spent substantial money making it one of its recognizable originals, but putting the series on Netflix temporarily gives Disney access to a much larger pool of potential viewers without permanently surrendering exclusivity.

Streaming is beginning to look less like a collection of sealed kingdoms and more like television used to work, where content moves around when the deal makes sense.

Dan Houser Is Building Two Games After Rockstar

Former Rockstar Games co-founder Dan Houser revealed more about the games being developed through Absurd Ventures, including an open-world comedy and a separate dystopian science-fiction project.

Houser has also deliberately avoided watching the extensive Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay presentation released earlier this year. He explained that consuming similar open-world projects while developing his own work can become creatively distracting, an approach he says he has used before while making games at Rockstar.

That restraint is understandable considering Houser helped shape the genre he is now re-entering from outside Rockstar. Anything Absurd Ventures reveals will immediately be compared with GTA and Red Dead Redemption whether Houser wants that comparison or not.

An open-world comedy is especially interesting because humor was always one of the elements separating Grand Theft Auto from more straightforward crime games. The real test will be whether Houser can establish a completely different voice without simply building something that feels like an alternate Rockstar production.

The Miami Heat Are Becoming Vice City for One Night

The Miami Heat will temporarily become Vice City when they host the Milwaukee Bucks on November 18, one night before Grand Theft Auto VI launches on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

The promotion will include a special Vice City basketball court, a redesigned Heat uniform and additional game-night activities built around GTA VI’s fictional version of South Florida. More details are expected closer to the game.

This is an unusually clean collision between a fictional city and its real-world inspiration. Vice City has always been inseparable from Miami aesthetics, and Rockstar now gets to bring the relationship full circle by effectively putting its version of the city onto an NBA court.

The timing is also impossible to miss. Holding the event the night before GTA VI releases turns an ordinary regular-season basketball game into part of the final launch celebration for what is already one of the largest entertainment releases of the year.

There have been plenty of video-game sports promotions, but having an actual professional team temporarily adopt the identity of a fictional city based on its own hometown is considerably more committed than putting a logo on the scoreboard.

Baywatch Shows Off Its New Generation of Lifeguards

Fox released four new teasers for its upcoming Baywatch reboot, providing the clearest look yet at the ensemble ahead of the show’s January 2027 premiere.

Stephen Amell stars as Hobie Buchannon, the former wild child from the original series who is now a Baywatch captain following in the footsteps of his father, Mitch. Jessica Belkin plays Charlie, the daughter Hobie did not know he had, who arrives wanting to become a lifeguard herself. The cast also includes Shay Mitchell, Hassie Harrison, Noah Beck, Brooks Nader, Livvy Dunne and Thaddeus LaGrone.

That Hobie decision gives the reboot something more useful than simply assigning Amell another version of Mitch Buchannon. It makes the new series a continuation without requiring the entire original cast to carry it.

The father-daughter structure also creates a natural generational bridge. Baywatch nostalgia can get viewers through the door, but a reboot cannot survive indefinitely on red swimsuits, slow-motion running and references to the 1990s.

Making Hobie the veteran rather than the kid is a clever way to demonstrate how much time has passed without pretending the franchise is starting over from scratch.

Disney is allowing some of its most recognizable content onto a competing streaming platform. Sony may be turning Battlefield into a character-driven movie despite the games being better known for large-scale multiplayer warfare. Fox is building Baywatch around the next generation instead of trying to recreate the original cast.

Even the newly named Skydance faces the same problem on an almost absurd scale. It now sits above some of the most recognizable entertainment properties in the world, but owning Harry Potter, DC, Star Trek, Game of Thrones, Top Gun and dozens of other franchises does not automatically make the combined company work.

The brands are already valuable. The difficult part is figuring out what to do with them next.
