Cyberpunk 2077 Live-Action Movie

Cyberpunk 2077 gets a Paramount movie, Xbox launches its XP entertainment division and Marvel reveals Zodiac at New York Comic Con.

Paramount is officially developing a Cyberpunk 2077 movie, Xbox created an entire division devoted to turning its games into larger entertainment franchises, and Marvel used New York Comic Con to reveal its next live-action series while unexpectedly screening VisionQuest. HBO also gave Crazy Rich Asians the television continuation that has been discussed for years, while the Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery merger officially crossed the finish line.

It’s the Bandwagon Nerds News Report for October 9, 2026!

Cyberpunk 2077 Is Getting a Live-Action Movie

Paramount Pictures is developing a live-action film set inside the Cyberpunk 2077 universe, with veteran Transformers producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura attached to produce.

CD Projekt Red is directly involved in the project, although no director, writer, cast or release date has been announced. The movie is expected to tell a new story inside the Cyberpunk universe rather than simply recreating V’s storyline from the game.

That distinction is important because Cyberpunk has already demonstrated how well the world can support stories beyond the original game. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners became one of Netflix’s most successful video-game adaptations precisely because it used Night City as the setting rather than treating the game’s plot as something that needed to be reproduced.

Cyberpunk 2077 has also undergone one of gaming’s most dramatic reputation changes. What began with an infamously troubled launch has grown into a franchise with more than 40 million copies sold, a successful expansion, an anime series, another anime season on the way and a sequel currently in development.

A movie no longer feels like an attempt to rescue the property. It feels like the next logical step for something CD Projekt Red has successfully turned into a much larger entertainment universe.

Xbox Creates XP to Take Its Franchises Beyond Games

Xbox officially launched XP, a new division focused on expanding its game franchises across movies, television, merchandise, partnerships, live events and location-based entertainment.

Kayleen Walters will lead XP after previously serving as president of Mojang. Her résumé also includes 13 years at Lucasfilm, while she served as an executive producer on A Minecraft Movie. Maria Angelidou-Smith, formerly Reddit’s chief product officer, will replace Walters as CEO of Mojang and Minecraft later this month.

XP will operate through four areas: Xbox Pictures for film and television, Xbox Products for merchandise and licensing, Xbox Partnerships for outside collaborations and Xbox Places for live events, attractions and other physical experiences.

Xbox already has enough successful adaptations to justify formalizing this instead of handling everything project by project. Fallout became a major Prime Video series, A Minecraft Movie turned into a blockbuster, and projects involving Call of Duty and Diablo are already moving forward.

The bigger story is what Xbox now believes the company actually is. Games remain the foundation, but Microsoft clearly wants Halo, Minecraft, Fallout, Gears of War and its other properties competing with franchises that exist simultaneously across games, movies, television, merchandise and physical attractions.

Marvel Reveals Zodiac and Expands Marvel Zombies

Marvel Television used New York Comic Con to announce Zodiac, a new live-action spy thriller scheduled for Disney+ in 2028.

Production is expected to begin in London next spring, with casting beginning soon. Marvel television chief Brad Winderbaum teased connections to S.H.I.E.L.D. while deliberately keeping the actual characters and premise hidden.

Marvel also announced additional Marvel Zombies specials built around characters including Moon Knight and Winter Soldier, continuing the animated universe beyond the original series.

Then Marvel ended the panel by surprising attendees with the entire first episode of VisionQuest, which premieres October 14. Early reactions from the screening were strongly positive, particularly toward the stranger science-fiction elements surrounding White Vision’s continuing search for identity.

Zodiac may ultimately be the most interesting announcement because Marvel television has become considerably more selective. The days when Disney+ had a seemingly endless pipeline of MCU series are gone, which means a new live-action project receiving a 2028 commitment carries more weight than it would have several years ago.

Marvel appears to be moving toward fewer shows with clearer identities. A genuine espionage thriller tied to S.H.I.E.L.D. could fill a space the MCU has not explored consistently since the earliest Captain America films.

Crazy Rich Asians Is Finally Becoming an HBO Series

HBO has officially ordered an eight-episode Crazy Rich Asians television series, bringing back Constance Wu, Henry Golding and Ronny Chieng from the 2018 movie. Michelle Yeoh will also return in a recurring role.

Adele Lim, who co-wrote the original film, will serve as showrunner and executive producer. Author Kevin Kwan is also involved, with production expected to begin in 2027.

That effectively gives Crazy Rich Asians the continuation audiences have been waiting for without requiring Warner Bros. to spend another several years trying to get a direct theatrical sequel together.

Television may actually fit Kwan’s world better. The books contain considerably more characters, family politics and social maneuvering than one movie could comfortably handle, and an eight-hour season gives the story room to explore those relationships without constantly pushing toward the next large set piece.

Bringing the original leads back also keeps HBO from falling into the trap of rebooting something audiences were still interested in continuing. Seven years of development limbo was already long enough.

Skydance Officially Takes Control of Warner Bros. and Paramount

The $81 billion Paramount takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery officially closed this week, creating the newly combined company operating under the Skydance name.

That makes official something we have been tracking throughout these reports. Paramount, Warner Bros., HBO, CBS, CNN, Nickelodeon, DC, Harry Potter, Star Trek, Game of Thrones, SpongeBob SquarePants and dozens of other major properties now sit inside the same corporation.

The immediate consumer experience will not change much, but HBO Max and Paramount+ are eventually expected to become one unified streaming service. Skydance has not announced when that combination will happen.

The company has also committed to releasing at least 30 theatrical films annually while preserving Warner Bros. and Paramount as separate creative studio brands.

Those promises are encouraging, but the real test will come when the cost cutting begins. Skydance is carrying enormous debt from the acquisition and has already discussed billions of dollars in savings. Hollywood mergers generally produce layoffs and consolidation somewhere, regardless of how much executives emphasize continuity on Day One.

There is also something almost surreal about the collection of franchises now sharing one corporate parent. Superman and Star Trek, Harry Potter and Mission: Impossible, Tony Soprano and Michael Corleone are all living under the same roof.

Forza Horizon 6 Finally Has Its PS5 Date

Forza Horizon 6 will arrive on PlayStation 5 on January 26, 2027, approximately eight months after the open-world racing game debuted on Xbox Series X|S and PC.

Players who purchase the Premium Edition can begin January 21, the same day the game’s first premium expansion launches across every platform.

The PS5 edition is being handled by Panic Button in collaboration with Playground Games and Turn 10 Studios. It will support cross-platform play, cross-save and shared user-generated content with Xbox and PC.

That last part matters because Microsoft’s multiplatform strategy works considerably better when PlayStation players are entering the same ecosystem rather than a separate version of it.

Forza Horizon 5 was already one of Microsoft’s biggest tests of bringing a traditional Xbox franchise to PlayStation. Following it with Horizon 6 makes clear that the experiment is no longer an experiment.

Xbox still wants people inside its franchises. It just cares considerably less about which box happens to be underneath the television.

What to Watch This Weekend

This is one of those weekends where the What to Watch section earns its spot.

Mike Flanagan’s new adaptation of Stephen King’s Carrie premiered Wednesday on Prime Video, turning the novel into an eight-episode series for the first time. Summer H. Howell plays Carrie White opposite Samantha Sloyan as Margaret White.

Friday brings three substantial streaming movies. Netflix premieres Animals, the kidnapping thriller directed by Ben Affleck and starring Affleck, Kerry Washington, Gillian Anderson and Steven Yeun.

Apple TV releases Matchbox: The Movie, its large-scale action adventure starring John Cena, while Peacock gets Steven Spielberg’s Disclosure Day following its theatrical run. The extraterrestrial conspiracy thriller stars Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, Eve Hewson and Colman Domingo.

That is an unusually deep Friday lineup before even getting into smaller horror releases arriving during October. Between Spielberg, Affleck, Flanagan and a major Apple action movie, there is enough new material spread across the major platforms that this weekend actually feels like an event rather than another collection of library additions.

Cyberpunk is getting another medium. Xbox created an entire corporate division specifically to expand its properties beyond controllers and consoles. Fallout, Minecraft, Sonic and The Last of Us already proved that video-game adaptations no longer need to feel like Hollywood side projects.

Meanwhile, Marvel is doing almost the opposite. After years of expanding as quickly as possible, it is becoming more deliberate about which television projects actually deserve to exist.

Both approaches are ultimately chasing the same thing. A franchise has to be big enough to survive beyond its original format without becoming so diluted that nobody remembers why they cared about it in the first place.
