Tony Romo CBS Parting Ways

Tony Romo and CBS part ways, Jayden Daniels is out in London and Justin Jefferson will sit against Miami in Week 4.

One of the NFL’s most prominent broadcast partnerships officially ended Friday.

Tony Romo and CBS Sports mutually agreed to part ways after nine seasons, ending a run that began with Romo immediately moving into the network’s top NFL booth after his retirement from the Dallas Cowboys. J.J. Watt, who has been filling Romo’s spot alongside Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson this season, will remain CBS’s lead NFL analyst for the rest of 2026.

Friday also settled several of the biggest injury questions heading into Week 4. Jayden Daniels will miss Washington’s London game, Justin Jefferson has been ruled out against Miami and Caleb Williams will miss another game for Chicago. The Rams received better news with Puka Nacua officially cleared to return, although Aaron Donald will not join him on the field in Philadelphia.

It’s the Chairshot NFL News Report for October 3, 2026!

Tony Romo and CBS Sports Part Ways

CBS Sports and Tony Romo mutually agreed to end their relationship Friday, closing a nine-year run that made Romo one of the most visible NFL analysts in television.

Romo had been on indefinite leave after his July arrest in Wisconsin for operating while intoxicated. He later pleaded no contest in September, and CBS elevated J.J. Watt into the lead booth alongside Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson while Romo remained away from the network.

CBS announced Friday that Watt will stay in the No. 1 analyst role for the remainder of the season. Romo said in his own statement that he plans to step away, focus on his health and family and eventually consider whatever opportunity comes next.

The move permanently reshapes CBS’s NFL broadcast hierarchy. Romo had been the network’s lead analyst since 2017 and initially earned significant praise for his ability to anticipate plays and explain quarterback decisions before the snap.

His absence this season already created movement throughout CBS’s booth structure. Watt moved up to work with Nantz, while Ross Tucker joined Ian Eagle on the network’s No. 2 team.

What began as a temporary response to Romo’s leave is now the network’s structure for the rest of 2026. CBS no longer has a pending decision about whether Romo will return, and Watt now has the remainder of the season to establish himself permanently in one of the NFL’s most prominent broadcast seats.

Jayden Daniels Ruled Out in London

Washington officially ruled Jayden Daniels out for Sunday’s game against Indianapolis, meaning Marcus Mariota will make his second consecutive start for the Commanders.

Daniels practiced on a limited basis throughout the week and made enough progress for Washington to consider his return, but Dan Quinn said Friday that the quarterback is not yet ready for game action. Daniels continues wearing a brace on his injured left elbow that prevents full extension while still allowing him to throw normally.

That makes this a meaningful step forward without becoming the return Washington hoped might happen in London. Daniels being able to practice all three days keeps a Week 5 return realistic, but the Commanders are clearly prioritizing function and protection of the elbow over getting him back simply because he can participate.

Mariota now gets another opportunity after throwing three touchdowns in Washington’s 33-31 victory over Seattle. The Commanders also expect linebacker Frankie Luvu and tight end Chig Okonkwo back this week, although Terry McLaurin was added to Friday’s injury report and is questionable.

The situation is considerably less desperate than it looked immediately after Daniels was injured. Washington already knows Mariota can win a game, while Daniels has progressed enough that the conversation has shifted from whether he will return this season to exactly when.

Justin Jefferson Will Miss Week 4

Minnesota ruled Justin Jefferson out against Miami after the receiver was unable to practice this week because of the ankle injury he suffered against Tampa Bay.

Kevin O’Connell said Jefferson simply could not get far enough along to play Sunday. Minnesota has remained optimistic that the injury is not a long-term problem, but three missed practices made this week’s decision increasingly inevitable.

Jordan Addison becomes the clear focal point of the passing game, while T.J. Hockenson and Jauan Jennings should also see additional opportunities. Jefferson leads Minnesota with 179 receiving yards and two touchdowns through three games.

The Vikings have enough margin to make the conservative decision. Minnesota enters Sunday 3-0 and faces a Miami team that is 0-3 and already without De’Von Achane for the remainder of the season.

That does not make Jefferson replaceable. It simply means the Vikings can afford to think about October rather than treating Week 4 like an emergency.

Puka Nacua Cleared to Return, Aaron Donald Ruled Out

The Rams will get Puka Nacua back Sunday against Philadelphia after he missed the previous two games with hip and groin issues. Nacua practiced throughout the week and carries no injury designation.

Sean McVay confirmed Friday that Nacua will play, restoring one of Matthew Stafford’s most important weapons after Los Angeles leaned heavily on Davante Adams during Nacua’s absence.

The tradeoff is significant on defense. Aaron Donald has been ruled out because of a back injury after missing practice all week. Tight end Terrance Ferguson and cornerback Jaylen Watson will also miss the game, while Colby Parkinson is questionable.

Donald’s absence creates a different problem than Nacua’s return solves. Philadelphia struggled badly in Monday night’s 27-7 loss to Chicago, but the Eagles still have an offense capable of taking advantage when the middle of a defensive front loses a player of Donald’s caliber.

Both teams enter needing a response. Los Angeles is 1-2 after letting a fourth-quarter lead disappear in Denver, while Philadelphia is 2-1 after one of its worst offensive performances in recent memory.

Nacua makes the Rams considerably more dangerous. Donald’s absence keeps the matchup from becoming an uncomplicated injury win.

Caleb Williams Out Again, Tyson Bagent Likely to Start

Caleb Williams will miss his second consecutive game because of the hamstring injury he suffered against Minnesota. Chicago officially ruled him out Friday against the Jets after he failed to practice all week.

The Bears have not formally announced whether Tyson Bagent or Case Keenum will start, but Bagent is expected to get the job after clearing concussion protocol.

Keenum gave Chicago a compelling argument for keeping him involved after completing 24 of 34 passes for 247 yards and accounting for three touchdowns in Monday night’s victory over Philadelphia.

The situation is far healthier than it was one week ago. Chicago went into Monday night uncertain whether Bagent would even clear protocol and came out knowing Keenum can run the offense effectively.

Williams remains the starter when healthy, but the Bears no longer need to rush him back because the alternatives appear incapable of winning. That matters when dealing with a hamstring injury that can become much more troublesome if aggravated.

Breece Hall Among Several Jets Starters Ruled Out

The Jets will arrive in Chicago without Breece Hall, who has been ruled out because of the quadriceps injury he suffered against Detroit.

Hall had been considered week-to-week after avoiding a more serious injury, but he was unable to progress enough for Week 4. Braelon Allen should take over the largest share of New York’s backfield work.

The Jets will also be without receiver Adonai Mitchell, tight end Mason Taylor, guard Dylan Parham and linebacker Kiko Mauigoa.

That creates a difficult matchup for a 1-2 team trying to avoid falling further behind Buffalo in the AFC East. Chicago’s quarterback situation has received most of the attention this week, but New York now enters the game with its own offense missing several important pieces.

Hall avoiding a long-term injury remains good news. Sunday, however, will show how well the Jets can replace the production of one of their most important offensive players for at least one week.

Packers Offensive Line Still Shorthanded

Green Bay ruled out guards Aaron Banks and Jacob Monk for Sunday’s game at Tampa Bay, continuing an offensive-line problem that has followed the Packers throughout September.

Defensive linemen Warren Brinson and Anthony Campbell are also out, while linebacker Edgerrin Cooper and center/guard Jager Burton are questionable.

Green Bay has already added veteran guards Laken Tomlinson and Kevin Zeitler in response to the injuries. The roster moves became necessary after the Packers struggled to protect Jordan Love and generate any consistent running game in last week’s 35-14 loss to Atlanta.

That makes the Tampa Bay matchup more interesting than the records suggest. Green Bay is 1-2 and trying to stop an early slide, while the Buccaneers are 0-3 and preparing to play without Baker Mayfield.

Both teams entered the season expecting their offenses to drive success. Instead, Sunday may come down to which team handles its replacement personnel more effectively.

Chargers Carry Five Questionable Players Into Seattle

Los Angeles listed five players questionable for Sunday’s trip to Seattle, including safety Derwin James and receiver Ladd McConkey.

Cornerback Donte Jackson, quarterback Trey Lance and defensive back Elijah Molden are also questionable, while guard Kayode Awosika and tight end Charlie Kolar have been ruled out.

McConkey practiced on a limited basis Friday after sitting out Thursday with a foot injury. James also returned in a limited capacity after missing Thursday because of his hamstring.

The Chargers enter Seattle at 0-3 despite remaining competitive in stretches of all three games. At some point, however, close losses stop functioning as evidence of progress and simply become losses.

Seattle is 2-1 and will get safety Julian Love back after he missed Week 3 with a calf injury. Rookie running back Jadarian Price will not play after aggravating a chest injury during practice.

For Los Angeles, Sunday is already beginning to feel larger than a normal Week 4 road game. An 0-4 start would leave very little room for a midseason recovery.

Jed York Suspended Six Games by NFL

The NFL suspended San Francisco 49ers owner Jed York for six games and fined him $500,000 Friday for violating the league’s personal conduct policy.

York was arrested August 21 on misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct and possessing criminal tools. He has already been absent from San Francisco’s first three games, and those absences will count toward the six-game suspension.

York will be eligible to return following San Francisco’s Week 6 game against Washington. He released a statement accepting the league’s decision and apologizing to his family, players, coaches, employees and the organization’s supporters.

The suspension comes while San Francisco is 3-0 and preparing to host Denver without Nick Bosa. The football operation has continued without York being present during games, but the league’s discipline ensures his absence will now continue into October.

For the 49ers, it becomes another off-field issue surrounding a team that has managed to keep winning through significant injuries and disruption.

Week 4 now heads into Sunday with one of the league’s biggest broadcast stories settled alongside several major injury decisions.

CBS has officially moved into its post-Romo era, with Watt now holding the lead analyst role for the remainder of the season. Washington and Minnesota will play without their franchise quarterback and top receiver, while the Rams finally get Nacua back but lose Donald.

Chicago once again knows Williams will not play, yet its quarterback situation somehow feels more stable than it did a week ago. Green Bay and the Chargers are dealing with depth problems that now stretch across multiple position groups.

October has arrived, and both the product on the field and the way the NFL is presented on television are already looking different from opening weekend.
