Chairshot Wrestling News Report (10/9/2026): Shayna Baszler Arrives, Nemeths Retain & Avery Styles Takes Flight
Shayna Baszler heads to TNA Bound For Glory, the Nemeths retain against The Hardys, and Avery Styles delivers a familiar move on Impact.
Shayna Baszler heads to TNA Bound For Glory, the Nemeths retain against The Hardys, and Avery Styles delivers a familiar move on Impact.
Shayna Baszler is heading to TNA Bound For Glory, and she already has an opportunity to leave the company’s biggest event of the year with championship gold.
Thursday’s final Impact before Bound For Glory revealed Baszler as Zoey Serrano’s mystery partner for Sunday’s Knockouts World Tag Team Championship match against Allie and Kiera Hogan. The Nemeth Brothers also retained their World Tag Team Championship against The Hardys after another appearance by syX, while Avery Styles delivered one of his father’s most recognizable moves during a chaotic eight-man tag match.
Elsewhere, AEW’s Anthony Henry announced that he needs neck surgery, the independent wrestling community mourned the passing of Jeff Cannonball, and WWE prepares for its final SmackDown before Saturday’s Money in the Bank.
It’s the Chairshot Wrestling News Report for October 9, 2026!
Shayna Baszler Makes TNA Debut at Bound For Glory
Shayna Baszler will make her TNA debut Sunday at Bound For Glory, teaming with Zoey Serrano to challenge Allie and Kiera Hogan for the TNA Knockouts World Tag Team Championship.
The announcement followed a confrontation between Serrano and the champions during Thursday’s Impact. Serrano crossed paths with Allie and Hogan backstage, leading to a physical exchange before security separated them. After defeating Ki Vibez and Alex Gracia later in the show, the champions challenged Serrano to find a partner and face them Sunday with the titles at stake.
Serrano accepted the challenge and made a phone call backstage, revealing that her partner would be Baszler. The former WWE Women’s Tag Team Champion agreed to participate, setting up an unexpected championship match only three days before Bound For Glory.
The pairing brings together two wrestlers with considerable history. Serrano previously competed in WWE as Zoey Stark, where she and Baszler were members of Pure Fusion Collective alongside Sonya Deville, who now works in TNA as authority figure Daria Rae.
That connection gives the team an established identity without requiring TNA to spend weeks explaining why the two women would work together. Baszler and Serrano already have experience operating as a unit, and their aggressive wrestling styles provide a significant contrast to the reigning champions.
Baszler’s arrival also adds another recognizable name to TNA’s Knockouts division. Her background includes two NXT Women’s Championship reigns, a lengthy WWE career and extensive experience in submission wrestling, making her an immediate threat regardless of how long she intends to remain with the promotion.
For Allie and Hogan, the challenge represents a considerable escalation from Thursday’s non-title victory. They issued an open invitation expecting Serrano to find someone willing to fight, and she responded with one of the most dangerous submission specialists available.
TNA has not announced whether Baszler’s appearance represents a longer-term agreement or a special attraction for Bound For Glory. Sunday’s championship match will provide the first indication of how the company intends to use her.
TNA Impact Results — October 8, 2026
Thursday’s Impact from the Boeing Center at Tech Port in San Antonio served as TNA’s final television stop before Bound For Glory. The show featured two championship matches, a consequential eight-man tag and several developments that changed Sunday’s pay-per-view lineup.
- Allie & Kiera Hogan def. Ki Vibez & Alex Gracia
- Call Your Shot Gauntlet Advantage Match – AJ Francis, Brian Myers, Home Town Man & Joe Alonzo def. Frankie Kazarian, Trey Miguel, Bear Bronson & Elijah
- TNA Knockouts Television Championship – M by Elegance (c) vs. Elayna Black ended in a 10-minute time-limit draw; M retained
- Fabian Aichner def. KC Navarro
- TNA World Tag Team Championship – Nic Nemeth & Ryan Nemeth (c) def. Matt Hardy & Jeff Hardy to retain
The Knockouts Television Championship match provided one of the night’s most frustrating finishes for a challenger. Elayna Black appeared close to defeating M by Elegance after connecting with the Blackout, but the champion had spent the closing moments attempting to run out the clock. Black finally secured a cover, only for the 10-minute time limit to expire before the referee could complete the count.
Black requested another five minutes, but M refused, preserving her championship without scoring a victory. The finish reinforces the importance of the championship’s unusual rules, which allow the champion to retain through a draw even when the challenger appears to have gained control of the match.
Fabian Aichner also gained momentum before Sunday’s six-way match for the vacant X-Division Championship. Aichner defeated KC Navarro with a powerbomb while fellow championship contender Cedric Alexander watched from commentary, giving Aichner a meaningful singles victory before all six competitors meet in Tampa.
Outside the matches, Moose issued an open challenge for Bound For Glory, while Mustafa Ali held a final meeting with the fractured members of Order 4. Jason Hotch, John Skyler, Tasha Steelz and Special Agent Zero made their grievances clear before Sunday’s four-way match for Ali’s International Championship.
Knockouts World Champion Xia Brookside and challenger Indi Hartwell also exchanged their final words. Hartwell emphasized the disappointment of falling short at last year’s Bound For Glory, while Brookside questioned whether her challenger has what it takes to become champion.
The show closed with the Nemeth Brothers retaining their championships, but their victory did little to settle the problems surrounding Sunday’s pay-per-view.
The Nemeths Retain as syX Targets The Hardys Again
Nic and Ryan Nemeth retained the TNA World Tag Team Championship against Matt and Jeff Hardy in Thursday’s main event, with another appearance by syX playing a major role in the outcome.
The Hardys entered the match hoping to regain the championships they lost at Lockdown and carry them into Sunday’s confrontation with syX. Matt and Jeff had already challenged Samuel Shaw and Joseph Sawyer to a Falls Count Anywhere Match at Bound For Glory, making Thursday an opportunity to restore their championship status before facing their newest enemies.
Leon Slater joined commentary to watch the match, maintaining his involvement in the larger rivalry with Nic Nemeth. Slater challenges Nic for the TNA World Championship Sunday, but the two remain under a no-contact restriction until their match.
The Hardys appeared to have a legitimate opportunity to regain the titles during the closing stretch. After surviving the Nemeths’ offense, Matt and Jeff mounted a comeback that included multiple signature moves before Jeff climbed the ropes for a Swanton Bomb.
The arena lights began flickering, signaling another appearance by syX and disrupting the challengers’ momentum. Nic capitalized on the distraction and pinned Jeff, allowing the Nemeth Brothers to escape San Antonio with their championships intact.
The situation deteriorated further after the match. The lights went out again, and when they returned, Slater was down at ringside. Another blackout followed before syX appeared in the ring standing over the fallen Hardys, leaving the challengers laid out only days before their Falls Count Anywhere Match.
That conclusion accomplishes two things for Bound For Glory. The Nemeth Brothers remain champions, keeping their tag team reign intact while Nic prepares for his World Championship defense against Slater.
The Hardys, meanwhile, have another reason to pursue syX beyond the original challenge. The mysterious duo has now interfered with their attempt to regain championship gold and attacked them immediately before one of TNA’s biggest events.
Sunday’s Falls Count Anywhere stipulation gives Matt and Jeff an opportunity to respond without the restrictions of a traditional tag team match. It also provides syX with an environment where their increasingly violent approach can become even more dangerous.
Nic Nemeth has benefited from the chaos surrounding both rivalries, but Sunday brings a considerably different challenge. Slater will have his opportunity to defeat the World Champion without the protection of a no-contact clause, and the result could determine whether the Nemeth family leaves Tampa holding one championship or two.
Joe Alonzo Earns Final Gauntlet Entry as Avery Styles Takes Flight
Joe Alonzo secured the coveted No. 20 entry in Sunday’s Call Your Shot Gauntlet after scoring the deciding fall during Thursday’s eight-man tag match. Trey Miguel suffered the opposite result, taking the pin and earning the unfortunate responsibility of entering the Gauntlet at No. 1.
The match featured Alonzo teaming with AJ Francis, Brian Myers and Home Town Man against Frankie Kazarian, Miguel, Bear Bronson and Elijah. The competitors were assigned to their teams through a random draw, with the wrestler scoring the deciding fall receiving the final entry position and the wrestler being pinned forced to begin the Gauntlet.
The match also produced a memorable moment involving Avery Styles, who accompanied Kazarian to ringside. Alonzo confronted Avery during the action, prompting the young wrestler to climb the ropes and deliver a twisting aerial maneuver resembling his father AJ Styles’ famous Spiral Tap.
The move carried additional significance because of AJ’s history with TNA. The Spiral Tap became one of his most recognizable maneuvers during his early career, and Avery executing it on TNA television provided a direct connection between the company’s past and one of its newest performers.
Avery has already signed with TNA and is scheduled to make his official in-ring debut Sunday in the Call Your Shot Gauntlet. His involvement Thursday allowed the company to showcase his athleticism without requiring him to compete in a sanctioned match before Bound For Glory.
The moment did not ultimately help Kazarian’s team win. Alonzo recovered and capitalized on the chaos to pin Miguel, securing the final entry position while leaving Trey with the longest possible route to victory.
That result gives Alonzo a substantial advantage in a match where survival matters almost as much as winning. Entering at No. 20 means he can avoid much of the punishment absorbed by earlier competitors, while Miguel must survive nearly the entire field to have any chance of claiming the Call Your Shot opportunity.
The Gauntlet winner receives a future championship opportunity, making Sunday’s match potentially important well beyond Bound For Glory. With Avery making his debut, Kazarian attempting to guide his young protégé and Alonzo entering last, TNA has created several distinct stories within the same match.
Anthony Henry Announces Neck Surgery, Faces Extended Absence
AEW and ROH wrestler Anthony Henry has announced that he needs neck surgery after doctors discovered a herniated disc pressing against his spinal cord.
Henry shared the news Thursday through social media, explaining that the condition requires surgery and that his expected recovery period is approximately three to six months. The WorkHorsemen member acknowledged the seriousness of the injury while expressing his determination to recover.
The announcement follows another difficult stretch for Henry, who has dealt with multiple injuries in recent years. He underwent surgery for a biceps injury in 2025 and required another procedure in August 2026 to address lingering complications.
Henry last competed in July, appearing on AEW and Ring of Honor programming before stepping away from the ring. His latest announcement explains the extended absence while establishing that another significant recovery process lies ahead.
The injury is particularly concerning because of the location of the herniated disc. Henry specifically indicated that the disc is pressing against the spinal cord, making the upcoming procedure more serious than a routine neck issue.
His projected recovery window should not be interpreted as a confirmed return date. Surgery, rehabilitation and medical clearance will determine when he can safely resume wrestling, and there is no indication that AEW has established a timetable for his next match.
Henry has been a familiar presence in the independent wrestling scene for years and gained additional exposure through his partnership with JD Drake as The WorkHorsemen. Their physical style and reputation for consistently strong performances helped establish them as a respected team before Henry’s injuries interrupted their momentum.
For now, the immediate concern is a successful procedure and recovery. Henry’s announcement makes clear that he intends to return, but the seriousness of the condition makes his long-term health considerably more important than any projected wrestling schedule.
Independent Wrestling Mourns Jeff Cannonball
The independent wrestling community is mourning the passing of Jeff Cannonball, who died Thursday, October 8, following a battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known as ALS. He was 39 years old.
Cannonball, whose real name was Jeff Guerriero, had publicly announced his diagnosis in May 2025 after experiencing health problems that initially proved difficult to diagnose. His wife, fellow professional wrestler Terra Calaway, confirmed his passing through an emotional social media tribute Thursday.
Cannonball began wrestling in 2010 and became a familiar name throughout the Northeast independent scene. He was particularly associated with H2O Wrestling and Game Changer Wrestling, building a reputation through hardcore and deathmatch competition while also appearing for promotions including Combat Zone Wrestling and Major League Wrestling.
His accomplishments included multiple championships in H2O, where he became one of the promotion’s most recognizable performers. He was also inducted into GCW’s Deathmatch Hall of Fame in June 2025, recognizing his contributions to a style of wrestling that often receives considerably less mainstream attention than traditional professional wrestling.
The independent wrestling community rallied around Cannonball following his diagnosis. Joey Janela organized CannonballFest in September 2025, with the event raising money to support Cannonball and his family during his battle with ALS.
Despite his declining health, Cannonball remained connected to wrestling and continued entertaining fans through his personality and online content. His Short Soda Reviews became another way for supporters to connect with someone whose humor extended well beyond his in-ring work.
Calaway’s tribute emphasized the relationship they shared and the life they built together with their son, Milo. She described Cannonball as an exceptionally funny and charismatic person whose influence extended far beyond the wrestling ring.
His passing is another reminder of the relationships that exist throughout independent wrestling, where performers often spend years traveling together and building communities without the financial resources or visibility of major national promotions.
Cannonball’s career may have been built around one of wrestling’s most violent styles, but the tributes following his death have focused just as heavily on his humor, generosity and friendships. Those qualities helped make him an important figure in the independent scene, and his loss will be felt by the wrestlers and fans who knew him.
WWE SmackDown Preview — October 9, 2026
WWE presents its final SmackDown before Money in the Bank tonight from the Cajundome in Lafayette, Louisiana, with the entire field for Saturday’s Ladder Matches scheduled to appear.
The show also features a Women’s Tag Team Championship defense and the return of CM Punk, who enters Money in the Bank hoping to regain a direct path toward the Undisputed WWE Championship.
- WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship – Fatal Influence (Fallon Henley & Lainey Reid) (c) vs. Charlotte Flair & Tatum Paxley
- CM Punk returns to SmackDown
- All 12 Money in the Bank Ladder Match participants scheduled to appear
The Women’s Tag Team Championship match gives Charlotte and Tatum another opportunity to establish themselves as a legitimate team. The unlikely pairing previously defeated Henley and Reid in a non-title match, earning another opportunity against the champions.
Charlotte has continued working alongside Tatum despite their different personalities and wrestling backgrounds. Their partnership has been strengthened by a common problem in Fatal Influence, whose involvement in the women’s division has repeatedly created issues for both competitors.
Henley and Reid enter the match with the advantage of being an established championship team. Charlotte and Tatum have demonstrated that they can defeat them, but doing so with the titles at stake represents a considerably different challenge.
Punk’s appearance carries significant implications for Saturday’s men’s Ladder Match. The former Undisputed WWE Champion lost the title to Sami Zayn and subsequently qualified for Money in the Bank, giving him another opportunity to move directly back into championship contention.
He will be joined by Bron Breakker, Je’Von Evans, Trick Williams, Penta and Kevin Owens in the men’s Ladder Match. All six have been advertised for Friday’s show, giving WWE one final opportunity to establish their competing priorities before the briefcase becomes available.
The women’s field will also be represented, with Sol Ruca, Lola Vice, Jacy Jayne, Roxanne Perez, Lash Legend and Tiffany Stratton scheduled to appear.
Several of those competitors already have established rivalries, while others have spent the qualifying process attempting to build momentum. Bringing everyone together one night before the event creates an obvious opportunity for those tensions to surface.
Friday also provides WWE with its final opportunity to address any remaining issues surrounding Saturday’s championship matches. Roman Reigns defends the World Heavyweight Championship against LA Knight, while Stephanie Vaquer faces Becky Lynch and Liv Morgan in a Triple Threat Match for the Women’s World Championship.
WWE has not announced additional matches involving those championship programs for SmackDown, so any further developments remain possibilities rather than confirmed segments.
WWE Money in the Bank Card — October 10, 2026
Money in the Bank takes place Saturday at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans, with the main show beginning at 6 PM ET.
- Men’s Money in the Bank Ladder Match – CM Punk vs. Kevin Owens vs. Bron Breakker vs. Je’Von Evans vs. Trick Williams vs. Penta
- Women’s Money in the Bank Ladder Match – Sol Ruca vs. Lola Vice vs. Jacy Jayne vs. Roxanne Perez vs. Lash Legend vs. Tiffany Stratton
- World Heavyweight Championship – Roman Reigns (c) vs. LA Knight
- Women’s World Championship – Stephanie Vaquer (c) vs. Becky Lynch vs. Liv Morgan
- Oba Femi vs. Bronson Reed
The men’s Ladder Match features a particularly interesting combination of established championship contenders and wrestlers attempting to reach another level. Punk and Owens have extensive experience in major WWE matches, while Breakker, Evans, Trick and Penta represent very different approaches to pursuing the same opportunity.
The women’s match presents a similar contrast. Tiffany Stratton has already experienced the advantages of holding the Money in the Bank briefcase, while several other competitors are attempting to secure the opportunity for the first time.
The championship matches also carry consequences beyond Saturday. Reigns has spent much of the build dealing with the increasingly complicated Bloodline situation, while Knight has focused on proving that he belongs at the very top of WWE.
Vaquer’s decision to face both Becky and Liv creates a different kind of challenge. She willingly accepted a Triple Threat after Monday’s No. 1 Contender’s Match ended without a winner, giving both former champions an opportunity without requiring either to defeat the other first.
Oba and Reed provide the card with a physical confrontation outside the championship and Ladder Match programs. Their first singles meeting gives WWE an opportunity to establish which powerhouse emerges with momentum heading into the final months of the year.
The Money in the Bank winners will also immediately become factors in WWE’s championship picture. With Crown Jewel and Survivor Series approaching, Saturday’s briefcases could influence several major programs before the end of 2026.
TNA Bound For Glory Updated Card — October 11, 2026
TNA presents Bound For Glory Sunday from the Yuengling Center in Tampa, Florida, with several important additions confirmed during Thursday’s Impact.
The event begins at 4:30 PM ET following the TNA Hall of Fame ceremony at 4 PM ET.
- TNA World Championship – Nic Nemeth (c) vs. Leon Slater
- TNA Knockouts World Championship – Xia Brookside (c) vs. Indi Hartwell
- TNA Knockouts World Tag Team Championship – Allie & Kiera Hogan (c) vs. Zoey Serrano & Shayna Baszler
- TNA International Championship – Mustafa Ali (c) vs. Jason Hotch vs. John Skyler vs. Special Agent Zero
- TNA X-Division Championship – Fabian Aichner vs. KC Navarro vs. Cedric Alexander vs. Rich Swann vs. Ryan Nemeth vs. BDE
- Falls Count Anywhere Match – The Hardys vs. syX
- Ricky Sosa vs. Eddie Edwards
- Call Your Shot Gauntlet Match
- Moose Open Challenge
The World Championship match remains the centerpiece of the event. Slater surrendered the X-Division Championship through Option C to challenge Nemeth, creating an opportunity to become the youngest TNA World Champion in company history.
The Knockouts World Championship program has become increasingly personal, with Hartwell attempting to overcome the disappointment of last year’s Bound For Glory while Brookside continues questioning her challenger’s ability to finish the job.
Thursday’s developments added another championship match through Baszler’s arrival, while the Call Your Shot Gauntlet gained important clarity with Alonzo entering at No. 20 and Miguel beginning the match at No. 1.
Moose’s open challenge also creates room for an unannounced opponent, although TNA has not confirmed who will answer it. The match gives the company another opportunity to introduce a surprise without requiring changes to the existing championship programs.
The Hall of Fame ceremony will recognize ODB, Amazing Red and Konnan, three performers whose contributions helped establish TNA across different periods of the company’s history.
With several championships at stake, a major debut and the possibility of additional surprises, Bound For Glory enters its final weekend with a lineup that reflects both TNA’s established roster and its continuing relationships with talent from outside the company.
Thursday’s Impact gave TNA several important developments before Bound For Glory, with Shayna Baszler’s arrival providing the biggest surprise and the Nemeth Brothers surviving another challenge from The Hardys.
Joe Alonzo now holds a major advantage in the Call Your Shot Gauntlet, while Avery Styles has already given fans a glimpse of the athleticism he hopes to bring into his official TNA debut.
The wider wrestling world also received difficult news Thursday, with Anthony Henry facing another significant injury recovery and the independent community losing Jeff Cannonball after his battle with ALS.
Friday now shifts the focus toward WWE’s final preparations for Money in the Bank. With all 12 Ladder Match participants appearing on SmackDown and a Women’s Tag Team Championship match scheduled, the company has one final opportunity to establish momentum before Saturday’s event.
TNA follows Sunday with Bound For Glory, completing a weekend that could produce several new champions and significantly change the direction of both companies heading into the final months of 2026.
