The WWE Intercontinental Championship Is Doomed On Roman Reigns

The US Title Run

Let’s take a look back at Roman’s US title run in 2016. Something that at first I thought was a good idea to boost the status of the US title only ended up as a prolonged accolade for Roman Reigns instead of an effective tool to help other talents shine. Roman took the title from Rusev who was engaged in a long fruitful title reign, which communicates the company’s feeling that Rusev is not important and is best served as fodder for Roman who “needs something to do.”

WWE should not push someone for a title because they have nothing to do, they should place them in the title picture and have them meticulously work their way up. The way Roman got his US and Intercontinental title matches were in a similar method to how John Cena does that nowadays. “I’m Roman Reigns give me a title shot.”

Not only does that defeat the whole purpose of earning a title match, but that also keeps younger and more promising talents away from the championships they should be going for. Mid-card titles should not be used to boost the ego and stock of an already very much established star in their prime; they should either be given to young upstarts who need to step up their game or to old veterans who can help younger guys grow.
