New WWE WrestleMania Opponent Rumored For John Cena

After WWE Elimination Chamber, the company kicked off a storyline where John Cena was trying to “earn” his way into WrestleMania. Before he even elicited the name of The Undertaker, a showdown with the Deadman was rumored, and despite Cena shooting that down during his promo on Raw, that speculation persisted.

Well Sports Illustrated’s Justin Barrasso shared some details of a new potential opponent after Tuesday’s WWE Smackdown Live broadcast.

Breaking: Per WWE sources, Rey Mysterio is backstage working out details tonight at SmackDown for a match at WrestleMania. The rumored opponent is John Cena.

Smackdown took place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, so Rey being there for any reason–even to visit with friends–makes sense.

Our take:

An unconventional opponent for sure, but honestly The Undertaker speculation seems to be more hope than anything. He clearly retired at the end of WrestleMania 33, and his words on the WWE 24 special taped for the WWE Network seems to confirm that.

Rey Mysterio looked great at the Royal Rumble, and it doesn’t seem like he was part of the first round of Lucha Underground tapings.
