John Cena Fully Invested in John Cena Classic, Says Event Is “Work in Progress”
John Cena confirmed at Backlash that WWE will stage the John Cena Classic, pitting main roster talent against NXT stars with a fan vote to determine the John Cena Classic Champion — fans can even vote for a competitor who lost their match. Speaking to Adam’s Apple, Cena said he’s “super excited” and “fully invested,” but emphasized the concept is still a work in progress with locking down a date and location as the next step.
Cena added he’s trying to “shut his radar off” when it comes to participants, noting unlikely stars can rise to the top, and WrestleVotes has reported Netflix has shown interest in streaming the event though no plans are finalized. Cena, who retired from active competition in December 2025, remains a WWE ambassador after hosting WrestleMania 42 and appearing at Backlash, and there’s no word yet on any Club WWE tie-in with the John Cena Classic.
