WWE Evolve marches towards Succession III in just two weeks, but who stood out to Greg DeMarco on June 10th!

WWE Evolve came to us  from the Performance Center in Orlando on June 10th, another packed episode that features two NXT stars working to improve their standing, a Tristan Angels/Starboy confrontation, and a knockdown drag-out six-man tag team main event.

The Third Star: Sam Holloway

Headed into the six-man tag, I fully expected Max Abrams to score the pinfall and become the challenger for Aaron Rourke at Succession III, but the talent I was keen to see more closely was Jacari Ball. And while Ball does impress, I was pleasantly surprised by Sam Holloway. Early in the match my viewpoint of Holloway was akin to the “c’mon, do something” meme.

But then he did–and he stood out. It’s less about his size, although he can move for a guy his size. It was the way he put it all together. He wasn’t in the match as long as his partners, but he still was the most memorable part of the match.

He has the physical tools–I just hope WWE can develop the persona that best showcases him, moving him away from the generic look and feel he has now.

Honorable Mention: Chazz “Starboy” Hall

As a west coast indy promoter, I keep my eye on talent as best as I can. Starboy Charlie was one we’d always taken looks at, but didn’t get to the point of trying to bring him in. He’s excelled in his short time in Evolve, the easy standout of the current ID crop of talent. While production did him no favors by putting up his screen graphic before his music his to interrupt Tristan Angels (another Evolve standout). But once he hit the ring, he stood out as the “Denim Dragon” always does. WWE is still more “Land Of the Giants” than it is precision and speed, but there is room for Starboy on this roster.

The Second Star: Karmen Petrovic

I never understood why WWE didn’t push Karmen Petrovic and Ashante “Thee” Adonis further than they did, because both are insanely talented. Karmen is the only one still in the company, quietly doing great work in Evolve. When she was the opponent for PJ Vasa, I was worried she’d lose as the latter was the focal point of more promotional spots the past few weeks. But while this match highlighted both competitors, it was Karmen who stood out. Even at 30, I think she has a good career ahead of her.

The First Star for WWE NXT: Cutler James

I tend to live a spoiler-free life, so I didn’t know who would answer the It’s Gal Open Challenge. Since I started watching Evolve this season, I haven’t been overly impressed with It’s Gal. I just don’t see it–I might, but it’s not there yet.

When Cutler James was revealed as his opponent, I was admittedly concerned he was there to give Gal a big win. Instead he put on a good match, the best I’ve seen out of Gal, and picked up a much needed win. Cutler James impressed me in his singles match against Tony D’Angelo on NXT a few months ago, and he did so here, too. I’d be happy to see more of him in Evolve after Succession, because he has all the tools to go far in WWE.

In hockey, a game’s “Three Stars Of The Night” represent the top three performers of the night. For more clarification, I defer to this Pittsburgh Gazette explanation:

“The tradition dates to the 1936-37 season, when Imperial Oil became the principal sponsor of Hockey Night in Canada radio broadcasts and was seeking a way to promote one of its products, Three Star gasoline. The idea of doing so by selecting the top three performers in a particular game purportedly came from a Canadian advertising agency.

Many clubs do recognize the player with the most three-star selections with an award or trophy, usually in conjunction with a corporate sponsorship, at the end of the season (or sometimes, each month). All six Canadian franchises, for example, have an affiliation with a well-known brewery.

The NHL keeps track of its own Three Stars Of The Night selections, but that is done on a league-wide basis. The league employs a system that awards 30 points to a first star, 20 to a second star and 10 to a third – a running total can be found on the league’s website – but it does not present an award based on them.”

In hockey tradition, the first star represents the best of the three, but all three are considered to be receiving a high honor.
