G1 Climax 36 B Block: Aaron Wolf VS Gabe Kidd!

The Big Bad NEVER Openweight Champion got his opening round win then a bye because of Shota Umino’s injury. The Mad Man IWGP Global Heavyweight Champion was shot down by “Drilla” Moloney, but got a giant win over Oskar. Who proves they’re the apex predator in this year’s G1?

Gabe pokes a bit of fun at Wolf’s judoka background by wearing a blue judogi to the ring. Gabe even says he’ll beat Wolf quick, like two minutes. Gabe throws a white judogi at Wolf, Wolf catches it, and he decides to put it on! The title belts are put aside, the bell rings, and the fans rally behind Wolf. Gabe plays around doing “tiger step” rope-a-dope, sitting down to put up a leg guard, then cartwheeling around. They circle, Wolf corners Gabe, but Gabe BITES Wolf! The fans boo while Gabe CLUBS away on Wolf! Gabe takes off his judogi to LASH Wolf with it! The fans boo as Gabe throws the judogi down and cusses everyone out.

Gabe flips Wolf off, but Wolf grabs that arm and IPPONS! Then STO! Then SAYANAGI! The fans fire up with Wolf while Gabe bails out! Gabe is furious but Wolf says he’s a pro-wrestler. Gabe storms up, trips Wolf, and he drags Wolf outside! Gabe throws forearms, but then Wolf THROWS Gabe! The fans cheer while Wolf takes off his judogi, but reconsiders lashing Gabe with it. The fans cheer Wolf putting the judogi aside, then Wolf stomps and ROCKS and CHOPS Gabe! Gabe sputters but Wolf CLUBS him on the back. Wolf then whips Gabe, but Gabe reverses! Wolf hits the railing hard, then Gabe POSTS him!

Gabe brings Wolf around, HEADBUTTS again and again, and he sits Wolf down. Gabe soaks up the heat, then has the cameras clear out from the ramp side. Gabe goes up the ramp, to the stage, and he makes lewd gestures at Wolf’s face on the big tron image before running back down the ramp! But Wolf dodges that top speed lariat, and clinches Gabe for an URENAGE on the floor! The fans fire up but the ref checks Gabe. Gabe is able to continue, so Wolf drags him up and puts him in the ring. The fans applaud, and Wolf stands Gabe up. Gabe UPPERCUTS Wolf, but Wolf DECKS Gabe! The fans fire up again as Gabe flounders to ropes.

Wolf eggs Gabe on while Gabe goes to a corner. Gabe drags himself up, Wolf runs in, and Wolf LARIATS! Wolf then brings Gabe around, snap suplexes, and the fans cheer as Wolf runs, to ELBOW DROP! Cover, TWO! Gabe toughs it out and the fans rally again. Wolf brings Gabe up, reels Gabe in, but Gabe fights the lift! The fans rally up as Wolf climbs up the corner! Wolf brings Gabe up and onto his shoulders for a fireman’s carry. Gabe fights with elbows, but Wolf still stands! SUPER DEATH VALLEY DRIVER!! The fans are fired up again while both men are down! The fans rally for Wolf as hard as they can, and Wolf crawls his way over to Gabe. The bell rings and the two step up. The fans rally and duel, Oskar shoves Henare, but Henare fires a forearm! Oskar fires back, they go back and forth, and Oskar ROCKS Henare again and again! Henare fires forearms in return, then runs, and he RAMS Oskar! Oskar doesn’t even move! Henare runs again, RAMS Oskar again, but Oskar is still up! Oskar eggs Henare on, Henare runs, and they RAM, and RAM, but then Oskar BOOTS Henare! Henare UPPERCUTS back, then runs, ducks ‘n’ dodges, only for Oskar to go the other way! The bell rings and the fans duel already. The crowd seems pretty even, and Drilla offers a handshake. Yuya accepts and the fans cheer. The two circle, tie up, and are in a deadlock. Yuya wrenches, wristlocks, but Drilla slips around, only for Yuya to hammerlock. Drilla reaches back to snapmare, but Yuya slips free to armlock again. Drilla fights back up, arm-drags, but Yuya arm-drags Drilla right back. Yuya still has the armlock, but Drilla stands up. Drilla wrenches and wristlocks, Yuya rolls and wrenches, but Drilla breaks free. The fans cheer as the two stand off. Drilla and Yuya reset, circle again, and Drilla calls for a knuckle lock.

Yuya obliges, they feel out the knuckle lock, then go shoulder to shoulder in a Test of Strength. The fans rally as Drilla hooks a leg, but it’s Yuya who powers Drilla back! Drilla powers up and he starts to bend Yuya back! Yuya bridges, even as Drilla hops on! The fans cheer, Drilla tries again, but Yuya turns that into a MONKEY FLIP! Yuya arm-drags Drilla down, but Drilla fights off the armbar by clasping hands. Drilla reaches up to headscissor, but Yuya kips free. Yuya arm-drags again! And arm-drags again! Drilla blocks the third, but Yuya slips around for a waistlock. Drilla ELBOWS free, runs, but into an arm-drag! Yuya has the armlock again while the fans cheer. Drilla endures, fights around, and the fans rally up. Drilla RAMS Yuya into the corner, but he backs off as Red Shoes calls the break. Drilla then CHOPS Yuya! Drilla fights around, stands up, and he fires forearms. Drilla gets Yuya to let go, but Yuya grabs the arm to wrench and arm-drag! Drilla headscissors and this time holds tight! The fans rally as Drilla puts on the pressure and Yuya endures. Yuya fights around, bridges back, and moves around. Yuya headstands, but Drilla SHORT DRIVERS! The fans rally as Drilla hurries to bring Yuya up. NECKBREAKER! Cover, TWO! Yuya survives and the fans rally up again. Drilla snarls, he stalks Yuya, but Yuya pushes him away. Yuya clutches the neck, but Drilla stands Yuya up to CLUB him down! And CLUB him again!

The fans rally as Drilla clamps onto Yuya with a chinbar, even trapping an arm. Yuya fights around, but Drilla wrangles him into a chinlock stretch! Yuya kicks, kicks, and has the ROPEBREAK! The fans applaud while Drilla lets go in frustration. Drilla stands Yuya up to CHOP him! Drilla puts Yuya in the corner to LARIAT again and again and again! Yuya headlocks but Drilla powers up and out. Yuya avoids the dropdown to body scissor roll, TWO! Yuya runs up, FLYING ARM-DRAG, then a DROPKICK! The fans fire up with Yuya, and he waits on Drilla. Drilla goes to a corner, Yuya runs up to CHOP! Yuya reels Drilla in, HALF HATCH PLEX! Cover, TWO! ARMBAR! Drilla clasps hands to fight it off, then he moves to stack Yuya up! The dueling is strong as ever, and maybe moving in Drilla’s favor. Drilla and Yuya go to center, and Drilla CHOPS! Yuya snarls, fires a forearm, but Drilla ROCKS Yuya! Yuya comes back and ROCKS Drilla! Drilla comes back and ROCKS Yuya! Yuya fires forearm after forearm, but Drilla ducks, ripcords, only for Yuya to block the chop! And ARMBAR TAKEDOWN! Drilla hurries to clasp hands but Yuya pulls on the arm! The fans rally harder, Drilla rolls to stack, TWO!! Drilla is free, but Yuya CHOPS! Drilla spins through to CHOP!

Yuya DOUBLE CHOPS, but then Drilla ducks, ripcords, and CHOPS! Yuya PELES! Drilla falls to a corner, Yuya fires up, but then Drilla JUMPING SUPERKICKS!! Cover, TWO!! The fans fire up with Drilla and he brings Yuya up. Canadian Rack, and DRIL- NO, Yuya slips free! Yuya cording holds, but Drilla slips through, and DRILLA- NO, Yuya lands out, then high stacks! TWO!! The Mighty Don’t Kneel, but The Front Man did fall in last round’s main event. But at the same time, The Prince was cheated by that Souled Out Son of Strong Style, Ren Narita! And now, the rivalry as British wrestlers overlaps with the need to get back up! Will ZSJ kiss the crown? Or will Callum #JustTapOut?

The bell rings, the two run up, and Callum BOOTS ZSJ! Callum then dodges a boot to throw a forearm. ZSJ fires back, and the forearms go back and forth, faster and faster! The fans fire up, ZSJ UPPERCUTS, then ZSJ whips. Callum ducks ‘n’ dodges to BOOT, but ZSJ blocks! ANKLE LOCK! Callum kicks free, but avoids the Penalty Kick! ZSJ avoids a roundhouse, and goes Matrix to avoid the lariat! The fans fire up for this fast ‘n’ furious opening exchange! Even Red Shoes is impressed by that Matrix lean. Callum bails out to pace around the outside, cooling the fans off. The ring count starts, but Callum slaps the mic out of Abe-san’s hand!

The fans boo but Callum goes back to the ring. The two reset, circle, talk a little trash, then Callum kicks ZSJ’s leg. ZSJ shrugs it off, but then Callum grabs an arm. Callum wrenches, hammerlocks, and puts on the pressure. ZSJ uses the British escape and wrenches back, then wristlocks. ZSJ slips around to the back, and reaches over to get the arms for a straitjacket! Callum spins through to put the straitjacket on ZSJ! ZSJ spins that around, only for Callum to spin it right back! The fans cheer the exchange, then Callum drops back, only for ZSJ to roll up and over! NECK TWIST! The fans cheer again while Callum rolls away.

ZSJ storms over, stands Callum up, and UPPERCUTS! Then he UPPERCUTS Callum off his feet! ZSJ stands Callum back up to snapmare and headscissor squeeze! Callum endures, uses his own legs to hook ZSJ’s, but ZSJ fights the turnover by going after Callum’s bad arm. Callum goes the other way, but ZSJ stands to NECK TWIST again! The fans cheer while Callum scrambles to a corner. ZSJ storms over, KICKS Callum, then drags him from the ropes. ZSJ stands Callum up, UPPERCUTS, then whips. Callum reverses, trips ZSJ, then KICKS him in the side! ZSJ bails out to the apron for a moment, then rolls back in.

The fans rally, but Callum JUMP STOMPS ZSJ down. Callum clamps onto ZSJ with a chinlock, then traps an arm. ZSJ endures, but Callum CLAWS his face! Red Shoes counts, Callum ELBOWS ZSJ in the head! Callum mockingly argues with Red Shoes while ZSJ goes to the apron. ZSJ stands, and Callum BOOTS him down! ZSJ stumbles into railing, and Callum goes out to whip him hard into more railing! Callum drags ZSJ up, and whips him into railing again! The fans rally while ZSJ slumps down, and Callum eggs him on. Callum drags ZSJ up, argues with Red Shoes, and whips ZSJ into railing again! But ZSJ rebounds to BOOT!

ZSJ whips, but Callum reverses, and ZSJ hits railing again! Then Callum BOOTS ZSJ down! They go into the crowd and the fans have to hurry out of the way. Callum ROCKS ZSJ, makes him take a seat, then gets space. Callum runs up, but stops short, just so he can SPIT on ZSJ! Then he BOOTS ZSJ down! The fans boo but Callum soaks up the heat. Red Shoes says get this in the ring, so Callum drags ZSJ up and brings him around. Callum fires forearms and UPPERCUTS, then asks more fans to move aside! Callum brings ZSJ up, but then THROWS ZSJ over the railing! As if trolling wasn’t bad enough, Callum flips the fans off.

Callum then drags ZSJ up and onto the railing. Callum suplexes, but ZSJ fights it! ZSJ then wraps Callum’s bad arm around railing and BOOTS it! Then he traps the arm in the railing! Red shoes reprimands but ZSJ runs to SHOTGUN the railing! The fans cheer while Callum falls and clutches his arm. ZSJ fires up, the fans are with him, and ZSJ goes back to the ring. The count starts, and Callum slowly sits up at 5 of 20. Callum manages to stand at 10, and he hobbles his way back to ringside by 15. Callum rolls in at 18, but ZSJ is on the bad arm! ZSJ STOMPS the arm, and Callum goes back to the ropes.

Callum clutches his arm, but ZSJ is after him again! ZSJ isolates the arm to STOMP it on the apron! Callum writhes and rolls back inside, and ZSJ grabs the bad arm to trap it, then TWIST! ZSJ stalks Callum, clamps onto the bad arm again, and twists the wrist, bends the elbow, and repeat! Callum endures, but ZSJ SNAPS fingers! Red Shoes reprimands but ZSJ doesn’t really care. Callum goes to ropes, ZSJ wrenches the arm, but Callum CHOPS! There’s still power in the other arm as Callum CHOPS again!

ZSJ KICKS the bad arm, and Callum snarls. Callum BOOTS, ZSJ BOOTS, and repeat! Callum gets mad, and DOUBLE BOOTS hit! Both men go to corners, then they both run up, and DOUBLE BOOTS take both men down! The fans rally up again while both men go to corners. ZSJ storms up, blocks a boot, but not the ENZIGIRI! ZSJ ducks the heel kick but not the ELBOW! ZSJ deflects the next kick but not the SUPERKICK! Then Callum KNEES ZSJ down! Callum hurries to bring ZSJ up, hooks a leg, FIREBOLT! Cover, TWO! ZSJ survives and the fans fire up again! Callum is frustrated but he runs up, EXCALIBUR! Cover, TWO!

The fans applaud as ZSJ stays in this. Callum storms back over, stands ZSJ back up, and he underhooks for- NO, ZSJ fights the lift to wrench and DOUBLE WRISTLOCK! But Callum slips through, GERMAN SUPLEX! But ZSJ comes back, PENALTY KICK! But Callum’s back up, KISS THE CROWN LARIAT! Callum isn’t done, he drags ZSJ up, but ZSJ scoops to SABRE DRIVER!! Both men are down and the fans fire back up! ZSJ crawls to the corner, eggs Callum on, then stands up. ZSJ runs up, but Callum SUPERKICKS! ZSJ tries again, but runs into the SLINGBLADE TAKEDOWN, BLACKOUT SLEEPER!

Callum squeezes as tight as he can but that bad arm is holding him back. ZSJ pries the hold open, bends the fingers, then shifts to a TRIANGLE HOLD! Calum endures, but ZSJ shifts again, omoplata! ZSJ gets the other arm, bends the fingers, and then has CLARKY CAT!! ZSJ ELBOWS away on the good arm but Callum still fights. ZSJ shifts for an over-the-back stretch on that arm, but Callum kicks his way to the ROPEBREAK! The fans cheer as ZSJ lets Callum go. ZSJ kicks at Callum, Callum gets mad, and Callum just takes the shoulder tape off. Callum eggs ZSJ on, so ZSJ KICKS the bad arm! Callum drops back down, but he still eggs ZSJ on.

ZSJ KICKS Callum’s arm, but Callum stands. ZSJ KICKS the arm, but Callum CHOPS! There’s still power in the good arm, and ZSJ sits down. Callum winds up, but ZSJ blocks the chop to UPPERCUT the arm! Callum LARIATS, but ZSJ stays up to KICK! Callum ROUNDHOUSES! And EXCALIBUR! Cover, TWO! ZSJ survives, but Callum unwraps the wrist tape. Callum winds up, KISS THE CROWN!! And then the PRINCE’S CURSE!! Cover, TWO?!? ZSJ survives Callum’s best shots and the fans are thunderous again! Callum crawls over to ZSJ, drags him up, and fireman’s carries. MAKE WAY, but ZSJ hits a FUJIWARA ARMBAR TAKEDOWN!!

The fans rally as ZSJ then shifts, DISARMER!! Callum endures, reaches out, but ZSJ shifts again, INVERTED ARMBAR!! ZSJ fights, reaches out, pleads with Red Shoes, but ZSJ shifts to a TRIANGLE HOLD! ZSJ squeezes as tight as he can, and Callum is fading! But then Callum gets a second wind, and he deadlifts ZSJ! ZSJ lets go, pump handle and flip, then EURO CLUTCH! TWO!! Callum escapes, takes a swing, but ZSJ catches it, spins it, hooks Callum up, backslide, then high stack, jackknife bridge! TWO!?!? Callum escapes in time, dizzy as he is, and the fans are electric! ZSJ is beside himself, but he drags Callum up.

ZSJ wrenches the bad arm, but Callum ROCKS ZSJ! ZSJ ROUNDHOUSES the lariat, UPPERCUTS Callum, but Callum V-TRIGGERS! ZSJ staggers into a fireman’s carry! MAKE- NO, ZSJ lands out, and PELES the bad arm! The fans fire up again, PENALTY- NO, Callum ducks, rolls ZSJ up, and has tights!! CALLUM WINS!

Winner: Callum Newman, by pinfall (gains 2 points; ZSJ earns 0)

ZSJ protests, but too little, too late! Callum couldn’t win straight up so he took a shortcut! Will The Front Man just have to win out to get ahead?

As for Callum, he tells ZSJ to go away already so he can have his moment. ZSJ leaves, Callum rolls back into the ring, and Callum gets the mic. In Japanese, Callum says, “Aw, you poor thing. Zack, you’re not the best technical wrestler in the world.” Then in English, Callum says ZSJ effin’ sucks! Couldn’t knock him out or tap him out! Jog on, mate. Scram! The fans are torn, but Callum says he’s undefeated since coming back to Japan. But it’s too hot, his shoulder hurts, and he said before that he wasn’t gonna win, but F it. He’s gonna be the youngest G1 Climax winner! And y’know what you lot are gonna do? You’re gonna Make Way for the Prince, and Kiss the Crown!

Callum leaves it at that as he drops the mic. Will The Prince soon rule over NJPW as not just the youngest G1 winner, but as the first man to grab both New Japan Cup and G1 trophies in the same year? Or is his pride coming before the fall?

My Thoughts:

An awesome round for B Block, all four matches brought main event energy. Gabe insulting Wolf on being a judoka before he was a pro-wrestler is very in character, even when Gabe was “NJPW Ichiban” and not an AEW “invader.” Gabe getting the win also makes sense, he needs to be able to have that heat of being the AEW guy winning here and there. Oskar VS Henare was great, great showing for Oskar, but Henare winning out also makes sense. Henare and Great-O-Khan beat Knock Out Brothers for the tag titles, Henare is the newly crowned New Zealand Heavyweight Champion, Henare is not owing Oskar a golden ticket to anything right now.

Rather surprised seeing Drilla beat Yuya after Yuya got his main event win, but that’s great for Drilla. And then awesome main event from tonight, and Callum cheating the win makes a lot of sense as he’s becoming a top Heel in NJPW. Callum already beat Yuya to start this tournament, but I feel like they could run that back in the finals, pitting Callum making history against Yuya making the case he is NJPW’s New Ace.
