New Japan asked the G1 Climax to create a new main-event player. Mission accomplished.

Ryohei Oiwa survived Yuya Uemura Sunday to win the biggest tournament of his career, while Jeff Cobb made a surprise return to NJPW and WWE prepares to put championship gold on the line Monday night in Buffalo.

Ryohei Oiwa Wins G1 Climax 36

Ryohei Oiwa defeated Yuya Uemura by submission after 35 minutes and 10 seconds Sunday at Ryogoku Sumo Hall to win G1 Climax 36. It is Oiwa’s first G1 victory, and after receiving the tournament trophy he announced his intention to challenge for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship at King of Pro-Wrestling in October.

This is exactly what New Japan needed from this tournament. The G1 did not simply give an already established star another accolade. It spent weeks elevating a younger group and finished by putting one of them directly into the championship picture.

Oiwa entered the weekend as somebody wrestling fans were being told could become one of New Japan’s next major stars.

He leaves it as somebody the promotion now has to treat like one. That is what winning the G1 is supposed to do.

Jeff Cobb Makes Surprise NJPW Return

Jeff Cobb returned to New Japan during Sunday’s G1 Climax final event, appearing after a six-man tag involving United Empire and Unbound Company. Cobb confronted former United Empire stablemate Callum Newman before shoving Newman down and aligning himself with Gedo’s Unbound Company. Cobb later said he had not actually left New Japan and described his absence as a “hiatus.”

That changes the context around Cobb immediately. A nostalgic one-night appearance would have been fun. Coming back, choosing a side and immediately creating an issue with Callum Newman means New Japan has an actual program waiting for him.

Cobb also gives Unbound Company something extremely valuable: instant credibility. You do not need several months to explain why Jeff Cobb is dangerous. Just put somebody in front of him.

Chad Gable Defends Against Rey Mysterio on Raw

Intercontinental Champion Chad Gable will defend his title against Rey Mysterio on Monday Night Raw from Buffalo’s KeyBank Center. The match was made official Sunday by Raw General Manager Adam Pearce after Gable offered Mysterio the championship opportunity during last week’s show.

This is a smart television title defense because Rey does not require much setup to feel credible. Gable’s championship run is still young enough that every successful defense adds something to it, and beating Mysterio would give him another meaningful name on the résumé.

The reverse is also true. If WWE wants to throw a major surprise into Monday night, Rey Mysterio winning another championship in 2026 would certainly qualify. Either way, this feels like more than a match designed to fill twenty minutes of Raw.

Former Joe Gacy Wins the GCW World Championship

Joseph Sawyer, formerly known in WWE as Joe Gacy, defeated Atticus Cogar Saturday night at GCW Homecoming Weekend Night 1 in Atlantic City to capture the GCW World Championship for the first time. Sawyer ended Cogar’s 266-day reign in the main event at the Showboat Hotel.

That did not take long. Leaving WWE can sometimes create an awkward period where a wrestler spends months trying to establish what the next version of the character is supposed to be.

Sawyer now has something considerably easier to build around. He is the GCW World Champion.

That gives him a destination instead of simply a collection of independent dates—and gives GCW a recognizable former WWE talent who is actually committed to one of its central stories.

Tommaso Ciampa and Komander Enter the All In Casino Gauntlet

Tommaso Ciampa and Komander have both declared themselves for the Casino Gauntlet match at AEW All In. Ciampa announced his entry during Saturday’s Collision, while Komander confirmed his participation in a digital exclusive. The winner receives a future AEW World Championship opportunity.

Now the fun part of the Casino Gauntlet starts. Andrade has the No. 1 position. MJF has No. 2.

Everybody announced after them becomes another possibility hanging over the match.

Ciampa is particularly interesting because AEW can use his reputation without needing to tell viewers exactly when he enters. Every buzzer after the first two participants becomes a potential problem.

That uncertainty is the entire reason this format is exciting.

G1 Climax 36 Final Results — August 16, 2026

Sunday’s G1 Climax 36 finale at Ryogoku Sumo Hall featured seven undercard matches before Ryohei Oiwa defeated Yuya Uemura in the tournament final, while Jeff Cobb made a surprise return and aligned with Unbound Company.

For wrestling fans, Monday shifts immediately from one championship picture to another. Oiwa has his sights on the IWGP Heavyweight Title, while Chad Gable has to survive Rey Mysterio in Buffalo and AEW continues filling an increasingly unpredictable Casino Gauntlet.

The calendar is crowded, but the useful part is that the stories are moving somewhere.
