Texans Set Week 1 Deadline for C.J. Stroud Extension

Houston Texans general manager Nick Caserio said Tuesday that the organization will not negotiate a contract extension with C.J. Stroud during the regular season. If the Texans and Stroud cannot reach an agreement before Week 1, Caserio said discussions will be pushed into the offseason. Houston exercised Stroud’s fifth-year option for 2027 earlier this year, so the quarterback remains under team control for two more seasons.

There is no immediate contractual crisis here, which gives Houston the ability to draw a firm line without creating uncertainty about Stroud’s availability. The larger question is how much the organization is prepared to invest after three seasons that have produced two AFC South titles but also statistical regression following his outstanding rookie year.

Stroud now has an opportunity to simplify the negotiation considerably. A strong 2026 season would make the price considerably clearer, while another uneven year would give Houston more leverage when discussions resume.

Lions Place Isiah Pacheco on Injured Reserve

The Detroit Lions placed running back Isiah Pacheco on injured reserve Tuesday and signed veteran tight end Tyler Conklin to the active roster. Pacheco had been dealing with knee and back issues during the preseason and will now miss at least the first four games of the regular season.

Pacheco’s Week 1 status had remained uncertain through the end of the preseason, but injured reserve turns a short-term concern into an early-season adjustment for Detroit.

The Lions now know they have to construct their opening-month backfield without him rather than spending each week waiting for another medical update. The timing is manageable because Detroit can plan around the absence, but Pacheco’s physical running style was supposed to provide another dimension to an offense that already underwent significant offseason change.

Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins Expected to Be Ready for Week 1

Cincinnati Bengals head coach Zac Taylor said Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins will be limited this week but are expected to be ready for the September 13 opener against Tampa Bay. Chase continues recovering from the hyperextended left knee he suffered during an August 25 practice, while Higgins is dealing with a bruised heel.

The Chase update is meaningful because the concern has shifted considerably since he initially went down at practice. Cincinnati does not need either receiver taking unnecessary repetitions nearly two weeks before the opener if the medical staff believes both will be available when the games count.

Having Chase and Higgins together remains central to Cincinnati’s offensive identity. The Bengals can manage limited September practice workloads much more easily than they can replace either player on Sundays.

Browns Add Sam Williams and Noah Igbinoghene

The Cleveland Browns signed defensive end Sam Williams and cornerback Noah Igbinoghene to the active roster Tuesday. Cleveland also placed defensive tackle Kalia Davis on injured reserve with a quad injury and waived cornerback Michael Coats Jr.

Williams is the more intriguing addition because pass rushers with legitimate NFL production rarely become available without some baggage attached. Cleveland gets an opportunity to add another athletic edge player without surrendering draft capital, while Igbinoghene provides experienced secondary depth.

The Browns have spent the days following cutdown treating their 53-man roster as a starting point rather than a finished product. That approach makes sense for a team with enough uncertainty at several positions that outside options deserve serious consideration.

Bills Put Zane Durant on IR

Buffalo placed rookie defensive lineman Zane Durant on injured reserve because of a neck stinger, guaranteeing he will miss at least four games. General manager Brandon Beane said a return as early as Game 5 remains possible. Michael Hoecht is trending toward playing in Week 1 following his Achilles injury, while linebacker Terrel Bernard and safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson remain among the players Buffalo is monitoring.

Durant’s absence helped create a roster opportunity for DeWayne Carter, who missed the entire 2025 season with an Achilles injury. Buffalo could therefore enter the season depending on one defensive lineman returning from a major injury while waiting for another to become eligible to return.

The more immediate concern is Bernard. Buffalo can absorb some rotation along the defensive line, but uncertainty in the middle of the defense becomes much more consequential when the first regular-season opponent is C.J. Stroud and Houston.

The Los Angeles Chargers signed tight end Patrick Herbert to their practice squad Tuesday, putting him on the same team as older brother and starting quarterback Justin Herbert. The two last played together at Oregon during the 2019 season.

The family connection makes the transaction interesting, but Patrick Herbert still has to earn anything beyond the practice-squad opportunity. NFL teams are not giving away developmental roster spots in September simply to create a good story.

For Justin Herbert, though, having his younger brother inside the same building for the first time in seven years is a rare personal wrinkle in a season where almost everything else surrounding the quarterback will be judged by wins and playoff performance.

Once Week 1 arrives, roster construction gives way to results. The decisions being made now determine which teams enter that transition with enough depth to survive the first injuries of the season.
