Chairshot Wrestling News Report (9/30/2026): Rook Pulled, Waller Survives & Zilla Wants Next
Mason Rook is pulled from his NXT title match, Grayson Waller survives an open challenge and Zilla Fatu targets the champion.
Mason Rook is pulled from his NXT title match, Grayson Waller survives an open challenge and Zilla Fatu targets the champion.
Mason Rook was supposed to receive the biggest opportunity of his NXT career Tuesday night. Instead, WWE announced hours before the show that Rook was not medically cleared, forcing Grayson Waller into an open challenge for the NXT Championship.
EK Prosper ultimately seized that opportunity and pushed Waller before the champion survived, while Zilla Fatu made it clear afterward that he intends to be next. Elsewhere, Zaria retained the Women’s North American Championship against Thea Hail and two more teams advanced in the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic.
Wednesday will then belong largely to the memory of PAC, as AEW presents a special tribute edition of Dynamite featuring two wrestlers with extensive history alongside Benjamin Satterley: Will Ospreay and Ricochet.
It’s the Chairshot Wrestling News Report for September 30, 2026!
Mason Rook Pulled From NXT Championship Match
Mason Rook was removed from his scheduled NXT Championship match against Grayson Waller after WWE announced Tuesday afternoon that he was not medically cleared to compete. WWE did not disclose the medical issue that prevented Rook from wrestling, and no timetable for his return has been announced.
Rook addressed the situation himself before NXT, saying that missing the match was beyond his control and describing the setback as a speed bump rather than a roadblock. The timing is particularly unfortunate because WWE spent the previous two weeks building Rook into his first NXT Championship opportunity, including a strong face-to-face confrontation with Waller last Tuesday.
WWE responded by keeping the championship defense on the show and turning it into an open challenge. That prevented Rook’s absence from eliminating the main-event stakes while giving somebody else an unexpected opportunity.
There is no reason to speculate about what kept Rook from being cleared. The relevant information is straightforward: WWE’s medical team would not allow him to wrestle, the championship match was changed and Rook intends to resume the pursuit when he is able to return.
WWE NXT Results — September 29, 2026
Tuesday’s NXT featured two championship matches and another pair of first-round matches in the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic. Grayson Waller retained the NXT Championship against replacement challenger EK Prosper, while Zaria successfully defended the Women’s North American Championship against Thea Hail.
- NXT Women’s North American Championship – Zaria defeated Thea Hail
- Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic – Mini Vikingo & Chazz “Starboy” Hall defeated BirthRight
- Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic – Fraxiom defeated DarkState
- NXT Championship – Grayson Waller defeated EK Prosper
Mini Vikingo and Hall will face Vanity Project in the quarterfinals, while Fraxiom advances to meet Noam Dar and Romeo Moreno. The latter matchup is particularly interesting because Dar and Moreno already produced one of the tournament’s biggest surprises by eliminating Los Americanos in the opening round.
The championship matches produced very different outcomes. Zaria was able to move beyond a challenger who had repeatedly gotten the better of her in recent weeks, while Waller survived an opponent he had no reason to prepare for when the day began.
EK Prosper Takes Rook’s Opportunity and Pushes Grayson Waller
Grayson Waller initially responded to losing Mason Rook by inviting anyone in NXT to challenge him, creating a scramble among wrestlers looking to take advantage of the unexpected opening. EK Prosper ultimately reached the opportunity and received the NXT Championship match in the main event.
Prosper came considerably closer than Waller probably expected. He generated several near falls and landed a moonsault during a performance that allowed WWE to elevate him without needing to change the championship, but Waller eventually hit consecutive rolling stunners to retain.
The circumstances gave Prosper something difficult to manufacture through a normal contender program. He walked into the night without a championship match and left having competed in an NXT main event against the brand’s top champion.
Waller also benefited from the change because the match reinforced one of the strongest parts of his current character. He spent the previous week questioning whether Rook had the hunger necessary to take his championship, then backed up his own confidence by accepting a completely unknown opponent and surviving.
Zilla Fatu Wants the NXT Championship
Grayson Waller did not have long to enjoy his successful defense before Zilla Fatu made his intentions clear. Fatu confronted the NXT Champion after the main event and positioned himself as the next wrestler looking for a championship opportunity.
Fatu had already made his presence felt earlier in the show following BirthRight’s Dusty Classic loss to Mini Vikingo and Chazz Hall. His ongoing problems with BirthRight have kept him involved around several different stories, but targeting Waller gives him a direct route toward something larger.
The timing works particularly well because Rook’s medical situation leaves WWE without certainty regarding when the originally planned championship program can resume. Fatu can move into the title picture without WWE needing to declare that Rook has lost his opportunity permanently.
Waller now has multiple problems available whenever Rook returns. That is healthier for the championship than putting the entire division on hold while waiting for one challenger.
Zaria Finally Gets Her Win Over Thea Hail
Zaria successfully defended the NXT Women’s North American Championship against Thea Hail after Hail spent the previous several weeks proving that she could beat the champion.
Hail had forced Zaria to submit during an earlier confrontation and then pinned her in last week’s tag-team match alongside La Catalina. Those results created a simple championship story: Zaria could claim Hail had not defeated her when the title was actually on the line, but she could no longer claim Hail was incapable of beating her.
Tuesday allowed the champion to answer that challenge directly. Zaria retaining does not erase Hail’s previous victories, but it establishes the difference between catching the champion in another setting and taking her championship in a dedicated singles match.
That also gives Hail somewhere to go after the loss without making the entire program feel pointless. She demonstrated that she belongs at that level even though she could not convert the opportunity into a second Women’s North American Championship reign.
Fraxiom and Vikingo & Hall Advance in the Dusty Classic
Fraxiom returned to NXT and defeated DarkState’s Cutler James and Osiris Griffin to advance in the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic. Nathan Frazer and Axiom now move into a quarterfinal against Noam Dar and Romeo Moreno, creating a matchup between one of WWE’s most established modern teams and the duo responsible for upsetting Los Americanos.
Mini Vikingo and Chazz “Starboy” Hall also advanced by defeating BirthRight’s Channing “Stacks” Lorenzo and Uriah Connors. The AAA-Evolve pairing now moves on to face Vanity Project, which received a first-round bye.
The tournament is benefiting from the variety WWE built into the field. Established NXT teams, main-roster talent and wrestlers from AAA and Evolve are being mixed together instead of creating a bracket made almost entirely from teams that already wrestle one another every Tuesday.
Vikingo and Hall are a good example of why that works. They entered as an unusual pairing from two different brands and now have enough credibility from an opening-round victory to make their next match feel like more than tournament filler.
Myles Borne Explains His Attack on Tavion Heights
Myles Borne returned Tuesday and addressed his recent betrayal of Tavion Heights, explaining that he had grown tired of being overlooked and no longer intended to allow loyalty to hold him back.
Borne had previously appeared to reconcile with his former partner before attacking him, making Tuesday’s explanation less about revealing what happened and more about establishing the version of Borne that WWE intends to use going forward.
The turn gives him a cleaner identity than simply being another wrestler separated from a tag team. Borne has enough history in NXT that a more aggressive singles direction can work, particularly if Heights eventually returns looking for retaliation.
What matters next is turning the explanation into something tangible. Heel turns are easy to establish through an attack and a promo; the more important part is whether Borne’s new attitude actually changes his position on the show.
Wrestling World Continues to Remember PAC
Tributes to Benjamin Satterley continued throughout Tuesday from wrestlers across multiple promotions, including Roman Reigns, CM Punk and Noam Dar. PAC died Sunday at age 40, one day after wrestling Andrade El Idolo at AEW All Out.
The response since his death has demonstrated how many different wrestling worlds PAC touched during a career that took him through the British independent scene, Dragon Gate, WWE and AEW. Wrestlers who knew him from very different stages of that career have shared memories of both the performer and the person behind the character.
AEW will dedicate Wednesday’s Dynamite to PAC, while WWE previously opened Raw with a memorial graphic recognizing Satterley and his WWE identity as Neville.
There is still no value in filling gaps with speculation surrounding his death. The wrestling industry has spent the last several days remembering what Satterley contributed during more than two decades in the business, and Wednesday gives AEW the opportunity to do that collectively on live television.
AEW Dynamite Preview — September 30, 2026
AEW Dynamite will be presented tonight from Pittsburgh as “A Tribute to PAC,” honoring the life and career of Benjamin Satterley on the company’s first live television broadcast since his death.
AEW World Champion Will Ospreay will face Ricochet in a non-title singles match specifically announced in PAC’s honor. Tony Khan described the two as iconic rivals of PAC, which gives the matchup significance beyond simply booking two wrestlers with extensive history against one another.
- Will Ospreay vs. Ricochet
- Thunder Rosa & Hyan vs. TBS Champion Persephone & Britt Baker
- A Tribute to PAC
Ospreay’s connection is particularly strong because he and PAC produced several major matches during their time together in AEW, including their acclaimed All Out 2024 meeting. Ricochet’s history with Satterley reaches even further back through Dragon Gate, where the two wrestled repeatedly long before either became nationally known in the United States.
That makes Ospreay-Ricochet an appropriate match for this particular show. It allows two wrestlers closely connected to PAC’s career to honor him through the kind of wrestling that made all three internationally prominent.
The women’s tag match continues a separate television story coming out of All Out. Persephone retained the TBS Championship against debuting Dani Luna on Saturday, while Hyan and Thunder Rosa have remained involved with Persephone and Britt Baker around the championship picture.
PAC was part of AEW from the company’s earliest days and remained one of its most distinctive wrestlers through his final match Saturday night. Giving his friends and colleagues the space to remember him should be enough.
Tuesday’s NXT had to change direction unexpectedly when Mason Rook was removed from the biggest match of his career. WWE used that disruption to give EK Prosper an opportunity, keep Grayson Waller strong and introduce Zilla Fatu as another championship threat without closing the door on Rook returning to finish what he started.
