Chairshot NFL News Report (10/13/2026): Bills Survive OT, Greenlaw Suspended & Hargrave Done
Buffalo survives the Rams in overtime, Dre Greenlaw draws a suspension and Green Bay loses Javon Hargrave for the season.
Buffalo survives the Rams in overtime, Dre Greenlaw draws a suspension and Green Bay loses Javon Hargrave for the season.
Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills closed Week 5 with one of the season’s wildest games, surviving multiple opportunities for the Rams to win before escaping Los Angeles 37-34 in overtime.
Monday also brought significant developments around several contenders. San Francisco could lose Dre Greenlaw to suspension and Deebo Samuel to a multi-game hamstring absence, Green Bay confirmed Javon Hargrave is done for the season, and Dallas added veteran defensive coach Mike Pettine in an attempt to stabilize one of the league’s worst defenses. Houston’s Marvin Harrison Jr. trade also became official with slightly different compensation than initially reported.

Bills Survive Rams in Overtime Thriller
Buffalo Bills 37, Los Angeles Rams 34 (OT)
Buffalo needed almost everything Josh Allen could give Monday night, and even that nearly was not enough. Allen accounted for 331 total yards as the Bills survived a fourth-quarter shootout, a James Cook overtime fumble and what looked like a potential Rams walk-off field goal before Greg Rousseau’s blocked kick gave Buffalo one final opportunity.
Matthew Stafford was outstanding in defeat, completing 40 of 54 passes for 383 yards and three touchdowns. Puka Nacua caught a career-high 17 passes for 138 yards and a score, while Davante Adams added two touchdowns as Los Angeles repeatedly answered Buffalo during a frantic second half.
The Rams forced overtime when Kyren Williams scored from a yard out with five seconds remaining, but the extra period became even more chaotic. Buffalo moved quickly into Los Angeles territory before Cook lost a fumble recovered by Aaron Donald, seemingly setting the Rams up to end the game. Stafford moved Los Angeles into position for a 48-yard Harrison Mevis attempt, but Rousseau got through to block it.
Allen then took over again. His consecutive scrambles of 19 and 13 yards helped set up Tyler Bass, who connected from 45 yards to finish the game. Allen ended the night with 210 passing yards, 121 rushing yards and two total touchdowns, while Cook rushed for 111 yards and two scores despite two costly fumbles.
The Bills move to 4-1 and immediately rebound from their Week 4 loss to New England. The Rams fall to 2-3 despite generating enough offense to beat almost anyone, leaving Sean McVay with more uncomfortable questions about special teams and situational decisions than about Stafford or the passing game.
San Francisco Could Lose Greenlaw and Samuel
The undefeated 49ers came out of Sunday’s 32-29 victory over Seattle with two significant problems. The NFL suspended Dre Greenlaw for one game without pay following his sideline confrontation with Seahawks linebacker Ernest Jones IV, while Deebo Samuel is expected to miss multiple games because of a hamstring injury.
Greenlaw’s suspension stems from the second-quarter altercation that followed his late hit on Sam Darnold near the Seattle sideline. He headbutted Jones, who was not wearing a helmet, and was ejected after officials reviewed the incident. Greenlaw is appealing, meaning his availability for San Francisco’s Week 6 matchup with Washington has not yet been finalized.
The disciplinary issue comes at a difficult time because Samuel’s injury removes another important piece from an offense already missing several receivers. Samuel has produced 206 receiving yards, 78 rushing yards and three touchdowns through five games while also contributing as a returner.
Brandin Cooks, Mike Evans, Jordan Watkins and Jacob Cowing are now positioned for larger roles, although Kyle Shanahan may get help elsewhere on the roster. Nick Bosa, Kyle Juszczyk and James Thompson Jr. could potentially return against Washington, which would give San Francisco some needed reinforcements as it attempts to protect its 5-0 start.
The 49ers have continued winning through an unusual amount of attrition, but that depth is being tested more aggressively every week. Losing Samuel for multiple games while potentially playing without Greenlaw would force another round of adjustments for a team that already looks very different from the one that opened the season.
Packers Lose Javon Hargrave for the Season
Green Bay confirmed Monday that Javon Hargrave suffered a torn Achilles during Sunday’s 31-7 victory over Chicago and will miss the remainder of the season.
Hargrave went down without significant contact while pursuing Case Keenum in the fourth quarter, and Matt LaFleur expressed immediate concern after the game. Testing Monday confirmed the worst-case outcome for the veteran defensive tackle.
The injury removes an experienced interior pass rusher from a defense that has already dealt with substantial losses. Green Bay remains without Edgerrin Cooper, while Micah Parsons has still not been cleared to return to practice following the torn ACL he suffered last December.
That Parsons update also ends most realistic hope of him facing Dallas this weekend. The matchup against his former team had been one of the more interesting possibilities on the Week 6 schedule, but Green Bay remains focused on getting him back without accelerating his recovery simply because of the opponent.
The Packers at least enter the week with their offense trending upward. Jordan Love threw for 367 yards and two touchdowns against Chicago, while Christian Watson and Matthew Golden combined for 266 receiving yards. At 3-2, Green Bay has won consecutive games, but the defense now has to replace Hargrave while continuing to wait for Parsons.
Cowboys Add Mike Pettine to Defensive Staff
Dallas responded to Thursday night’s 24-16 loss to Tampa Bay by adding veteran defensive coach Mike Pettine as a senior defensive assistant.
Pettine brings experience as a former Browns head coach and defensive coordinator for the Jets, Bills and Packers. He will work alongside first-year coordinator Christian Parker rather than replace him, giving Dallas another experienced voice as the Cowboys attempt to repair a defense that has struggled throughout the opening month.
The numbers explain why Brian Schottenheimer wanted additional help. Dallas has allowed roughly 168 rushing yards per game, has produced very little pressure or takeaways and entered the week without an interception through five games. Tampa Bay exploited many of those weaknesses Thursday, controlling possession and allowing Bucky Irving to rush for 165 yards.
Pettine’s arrival does not fix the personnel problems by itself, but it gives Parker another resource as Dallas attempts to simplify communication and improve its run defense. The timing is notable because the Cowboys travel to Green Bay this week, sending Pettine back to a place where he previously served as defensive coordinator.
Dallas is 2-3 and has shown enough offensive production to remain competitive. The larger question is whether the defense can improve quickly enough to keep Dak Prescott and the offense from having to win shootouts every week.
Marvin Harrison Jr. Trade Becomes Official
Houston officially completed its acquisition of Marvin Harrison Jr. on Monday, although the final compensation differs slightly from the package initially reported Sunday.
Houston Texans receive: Marvin Harrison Jr., 2027 sixth-round pick
Arizona Cardinals receive: 2027 second-round pick, 2027 seventh-round pick
The original reports had Arizona receiving the sixth-round selection while Houston received the seventh, but the finalized transaction reverses those late-round picks. The second-round selection remains the most meaningful piece of compensation.
Harrison leaves Arizona after only 33 games despite entering the league as the fourth overall pick in 2024. He produced 1,578 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns during that span but had fallen dramatically out of favor this season, catching only five passes for 85 yards through four games.
Houston is betting that reuniting Harrison with former Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud can unlock the potential that made him one of the most celebrated receiver prospects in years. He joins Nico Collins in a passing game that has lacked consistency during the Texans’ 1-4 start.
The trade is aggressive because Houston is already several games behind Jacksonville in the AFC South. Harrison does not have much time for a gradual adjustment, particularly with the Texans facing the 4-1 Jaguars in London this week.
Eagles Could Get Barkley and Smith Back
Philadelphia’s injury situation finally brought some encouraging news Monday, with Nick Sirianni expressing optimism that Saquon Barkley and DeVonta Smith could return against Carolina.
Both missed Sunday’s 19-17 loss to Jacksonville in London because of hamstring injuries. Their absence contributed to another difficult offensive performance as Philadelphia fell to 2-3 with its third consecutive loss.
The Eagles did receive another backfield setback, however, when Will Shipley suffered a partial tear of his plantar fascia. He could miss multiple weeks, adding another injury to a running-back room that already has Tank Bigsby on injured reserve.
Dameon Pierce and Carson Steele remain available, but getting Barkley back would immediately stabilize the position. Smith’s return would also give Jalen Hurts a badly needed established receiving option after several weeks of injuries throughout the offense.
Philadelphia’s problems still extend beyond missing players. The Eagles managed only 22 rushing yards against Jacksonville and have undergone major offensive-line changes following Lane Johnson’s retirement and the Cam Jurgens trade. Barkley and Smith would help, but they cannot solve every issue that has contributed to the three-game losing streak.
Lamar Jackson and Michael Penix Jr. Remain Week 6 Questions
Baltimore and Atlanta both left Sunday night uncertain about their starting quarterbacks.
Lamar Jackson missed Baltimore’s overtime win because of the ankle injury suffered in Week 4. Jesse Minter said Monday that it remains unclear whether Jackson will be ready to practice Wednesday, leaving Tyler Huntley in position to continue preparing with the first-team offense.
Huntley gave Baltimore plenty of reason for confidence by completing 24 of 32 passes for 201 yards and two touchdowns before scoring the winning touchdown himself in overtime. He is not Jackson, but the Ravens now know they can ask him to do more than simply protect a lead.
Atlanta is monitoring Michael Penix Jr. after he suffered a rib injury late in regulation Sunday. Tua Tagovailoa replaced him and finished the game, throwing the interception that ended Atlanta’s overtime possession.
The Falcons expect to know more once Penix goes through the early practice week. They are 2-3 and face Chicago next, making his availability important as Atlanta tries to recover from a loss that interrupted the offensive momentum built during victories over Green Bay and New Orleans.
Chiefs Place Tyquan Thornton on Injured Reserve
Kansas City returned from its bye by officially placing Tyquan Thornton on injured reserve because of the dislocated ankle he suffered against Las Vegas.
Thornton is expected to miss an extended period and may not return until late in the regular season or postseason. Kansas City responded by bringing veteran Justin Watson back on the practice squad, giving Patrick Mahomes another receiver already familiar with Andy Reid’s offense.
The Chiefs remain 4-0 and had the benefit of their bye immediately following Thornton’s injury. Rashee Rice’s hamstring problem is considered far less serious, making the receiving situation manageable even if Kansas City ultimately needs to add another outside option.
Kansas City returns against the winless Chargers, giving the Chiefs a favorable opportunity to evaluate their altered receiving rotation without immediately facing one of the AFC’s strongest opponents.

Week 6 Begins With Seahawks at Broncos
Seattle Seahawks at Denver Broncos — Thursday, 8:15 PM ET — Prime Video
Week 6 opens with two 3-2 teams looking for more consistency. Seattle is coming off its narrow loss to San Francisco, while Denver rallied past the Chargers in Sean Payton’s first game back as offensive play-caller.
The Seahawks have several injuries to monitor on the short week, including Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Leonard Williams. Zach Charbonnet is also not expected to play as he continues working back from his knee injury.
Denver remains without Patrick Surtain II and is monitoring several other defensive players, potentially giving Sam Darnold opportunities against a compromised secondary. The Broncos will be looking for more from Bo Nix after he threw for only 123 yards against Los Angeles despite Denver’s fourth-quarter comeback.
Both teams sit behind undefeated division leaders, making Thursday more meaningful than a normal October interconference game. Seattle cannot afford to fall another game behind San Francisco, while Denver is trying to remain within striking distance of Kansas City.
Los Angeles is left with the more frustrating result. Stafford threw for 383 yards, Nacua caught 17 passes and the Rams repeatedly matched Buffalo offensively, yet special teams and late-game execution again undermined the production.
Around the league, several contenders now enter Week 6 trying to win through shrinking depth charts. San Francisco may be without Greenlaw and Samuel, Green Bay has officially lost Hargrave and Baltimore still does not know whether Jackson can return.
