Today In Pro Wrestling History: October 7th
From Sherri & Robin’s 1988 classic to Brodie & Cody’s bloody war, ring action has shaped history. Revisit No Mercy 2007, respect NXT & relive BFG 2022!
Interesting moments, one signaled the end of an era and the other many fans look back fondly on because of the tragedy that happened shortly after. Let’s see what we got today!
-
WWF TV: WWF World Women’s Championship: Sensational Sherri (c) vs Rockin’ Robin (1988)
An international title change, when Sherri lost the belt to Robin in Paris, France. But even though the match itself was standard fair for 80s era WWF wrestling, what it symbolizes is a little more important. Sherri was being transitioned to less of a wrestler and more valet, and as time went on, the lack of a real division was evident. So this marks the last title change before WWF deactivated it in February 1990.

WWE No Mercy (2007)
This was a unique event where the WWE Championship was defended 3 times in the same night. John Cena had to vacate the title because of a torn pec muscle, so Vince awarded the title to Randy Orton. Triple H came out and challenged for it immediately, and was victorious. Then because Triple H was now champion, it turned his already schedule match against Umaga, into a WWE Championship match. Trips retained, and this set up for Randy to push for his immediate rematch clause in a Last Man Standing Match. Randy won the title back and this launched his most successful WWE Championship reign that lasted 203 days.
-
NXT TakeOver: Respect: 30 Minute Ironman Match NXT Women’s Championship: Bayley (c) vs Sasha Banks (2015)
Tons of history here. The first ever women’s match to officially main event a WWE PLE, first ever Women’s Ironman Match. The viral moments with Sasha Banks mocking Izzy with throwing her hair bow, and of course Bayley getting the last second 3-2 victory to retain the title and solidify her crown moment over Sasha a month and a half prior. The golden era of NXT, that helped to shape much of the current WWE product.

AEW Dynamite: TNT Championship Dog Collar Match: Mr Brodie Lee (c) vs Cody Rhodes (2020)
The Dog Collar Match between Cody Rhodes and Mr. Brodie Lee, holds a deeply emotional place in wrestling history because it was the final match of Brodie Lee’s life before his tragic passing just a few months later. While the match itself was a brutal, old-school masterpiece that kept fans glued to their television screens, it has since transformed into a beautiful, bittersweet memory for the wrestling community. For many, it represents the ultimate showcase of Brodie Lee’s immense talent, proving to the world that he was a true main-event powerhouse who could lead a major wrestling company. The passion and respect shared between both performers that night gave fans one last unforgettable image of a beloved husband, father, and athlete performing at the absolute peak of his craft.
At its core, the show was fun to watch because it was just a solid, well-rounded wrestling event with no wasted time. Every match gave the crowd exactly what they wanted, whether it was a fast-paced athletic showcase, a gritty brawl, or a nostalgia trip. The wrestlers kept things interesting by keeping the stakes high—you actually cared about who won or lost, especially with Mickie James fighting to keep her job and the main event turning into a bloody, tough battle. Add in a surprise return from Bully Ray to shock the fans, and the nostalgic induction of Raven to the TNA Hall of Fame, and it was a solid time during the rebuilding era of Impact/TNA.
An interesting mix of poignant history, unprecedented moments and overdue accolades for Raven, while not the highest Hall of Fame, it counts for something.
