Philadelphia trades Cam Jurgens to Baltimore, DeMeco Ryans takes over Houston’s defense and Baker Mayfield misses Thursday Night Football.

The Philadelphia Eagles have lost two Pro Bowl offensive linemen in two days, and this time the departure came through a surprising trade.

Philadelphia sent Cam Jurgens to Baltimore on Wednesday, giving the Ravens an established center while adding valuable draft capital to an Eagles team already dealing with Lane Johnson’s retirement. Houston also made a significant coaching adjustment, with DeMeco Ryans taking over defensive play-calling duties after an 0-4 start.

Meanwhile, Minnesota signed Odell Beckham Jr., Jayden Daniels took another major step toward returning and Tampa Bay officially ruled Baker Mayfield out of Thursday Night Football.

It’s the Chairshot NFL News Report for October 8, 2026!

Eagles Trade Cam Jurgens to Ravens in Surprising Deal

Philadelphia continued reshaping its offensive line Wednesday, trading two-time Pro Bowl center Cam Jurgens to Baltimore just one day after Lane Johnson announced his retirement.

The Ravens acquired Jurgens and a 2027 seventh-round draft pick in exchange for a 2027 fifth-round selection and a 2028 second-round pick. The deal gives Baltimore an established interior lineman while Philadelphia receives additional draft capital and financial flexibility.

  • Baltimore receives: Cam Jurgens, 2027 seventh-round pick
  • Philadelphia receives: 2027 fifth-round pick, 2028 second-round pick

Jurgens, 27, was Philadelphia’s second-round selection in 2022 and eventually replaced Jason Kelce at center. He earned Pro Bowl recognition in both 2024 and 2025 before moving to left guard this season because of Landon Dickerson’s injury.

The transition had not gone particularly well. Philadelphia moved Drew Kendall into the starting center role, and the organization’s confidence in Kendall helped make Jurgens available despite the four-year, $68 million extension he signed in 2025.

For Baltimore, the move addresses one of the league’s most difficult offensive-line situations. The Ravens lost Tyler Linderbaum in free agency and have since placed Jovaughn Gwyn and Ethan Pocic on injured reserve, with Danny Pinter already unavailable following a season-ending training camp injury.

Jurgens is currently in concussion protocol and is not expected to make his Baltimore debut until Week 6 against Cleveland. General manager Eric DeCosta nevertheless views the acquisition as a long-term solution rather than simply a temporary replacement.

The more surprising side of the deal belongs to Philadelphia. Trading Jurgens immediately after Johnson’s retirement removes two established starters from an offensive line already struggling to protect Jalen Hurts and establish a consistent running game.

Howie Roseman insisted Wednesday that the Eagles remain focused on winning this season, but the transaction creates legitimate questions about their immediate offensive stability. Philadelphia is 2-2 after consecutive losses and now heads to London with an offensive line that looks dramatically different from the one that opened the season.

DeMeco Ryans Takes Over Texans Defensive Play-Calling

Houston’s 0-4 start has finally produced a significant coaching change, although nobody is losing their job.

Head coach DeMeco Ryans announced Wednesday that he is taking over defensive play-calling duties from coordinator Matt Burke. Ryans previously handled those responsibilities before transferring them to Burke during the 2025 season.

The decision follows a disappointing defensive start for a team that entered 2026 expecting that unit to remain among the NFL’s best.

Houston led the league in total defense last season, allowing just 277.2 yards per game while surrendering 17.3 points. Through four games this year, those numbers have climbed to approximately 344 yards and 27.3 points allowed per contest.

Communication has become a particular concern. Houston has repeatedly failed to protect late leads, including Sunday’s 34-30 loss to Dallas when the Cowboys scored the winning touchdown in the final minute.

Ryans emphasized that the change is not an indictment of Burke’s performance. Instead, he wants to streamline communication and take direct responsibility for correcting problems that have contributed to three late-game defensive collapses.

The timing creates an unusually important Week 5 matchup. Houston travels to Tennessee on Sunday, where both teams will enter at 0-4 and one will finally collect its first victory.

Ryans built his coaching reputation around defensive leadership, and taking back the play sheet places the responsibility for Houston’s immediate improvement directly in his hands. If the Texans continue surrendering late leads, there will be considerably less room to blame communication between the sideline and the field.

Vikings Sign Odell Beckham Jr. to Practice Squad

Minnesota is undefeated, but its passing game has struggled enough that the Vikings are turning to a familiar veteran for help.

The Vikings signed Odell Beckham Jr. to their practice squad Wednesday, bringing the three-time Pro Bowl receiver into an offense dealing with Justin Jefferson’s ankle injury and inconsistent production from its other receivers.

Beckham spent the beginning of the season with the Giants after returning to New York, but his second stint with the franchise ended without a reception. He appeared in three games, played 20 offensive snaps and was released September 29.

The move reunites Beckham with Kevin O’Connell, who was the Rams’ offensive coordinator when Beckham helped Los Angeles win Super Bowl LVI. During that postseason, Beckham caught 21 passes for 288 yards and two touchdowns before suffering a knee injury in the championship game.

Minnesota enters Week 5 at 4-0 despite ranking last in the NFL in passing yards. Jordan Addison has handled most of the production behind Jefferson, while Jauan Jennings and the remaining receivers have struggled to establish consistent roles.

Beckham is not guaranteed an immediate promotion to the active roster, and his limited production over recent seasons makes expectations difficult to establish. Still, the Vikings have little to lose by evaluating whether the veteran can provide another reliable target.

Minnesota visits New Orleans on Sunday, where Beckham would have an opportunity to return to his hometown if activated. The Vikings have survived four games largely through defense and special teams, but their passing offense needs to become more productive if the undefeated start is going to develop into a serious championship run.

Jayden Daniels Practices Fully, Expected to Return Against Giants

Washington received its most encouraging quarterback news in weeks Wednesday when Jayden Daniels participated fully in practice for the first time since dislocating his left elbow.

Daniels missed the Commanders’ previous two games but is now expected to start Sunday against the Giants, assuming he experiences no setbacks during the remainder of the practice week. He will continue wearing a protective brace on the injured arm, which is expected to remain part of his equipment for the rest of the season.

The timing is particularly important because Marcus Mariota is now unavailable with a sprained MCL. Mariota did not practice Wednesday after suffering the injury against Indianapolis, leaving Washington with additional uncertainty behind Daniels.

Washington’s receiving corps also has injury concerns. Terry McLaurin and Stefon Diggs both missed Wednesday’s practice with hamstring injuries, potentially limiting the weapons available when Daniels returns.

The Commanders are 1-3 and preparing to face a Giants team that has opened 3-1. Daniels’ return would restore the quarterback around whom Washington built its offense, but the team still needs to protect him from another injury to the same elbow that has already caused repeated problems.

For now, Wednesday’s full participation represents the clearest indication that Washington can finally move beyond its emergency quarterback rotation.

Lamar Jackson Misses Practice as Ravens Prepare Tyler Huntley

Baltimore’s quarterback situation moved in the opposite direction Wednesday.

Lamar Jackson did not practice because of the ankle injury he suffered during Sunday’s 24-18 victory over Tennessee, leaving Tyler Huntley preparing for a potential start against Atlanta.

Head coach Jesse Minter has remained hopeful that Jackson will not miss an extended period, but the quarterback’s availability for Sunday night remains uncertain. Baltimore is preparing Huntley to handle the offense if Jackson cannot play.

The Ravens have gone 6-11 in games Jackson has missed during his career, illustrating just how difficult replacing his production has been. Huntley has experience in the system and a 5-6 record as a starter, but he would be operating behind an offensive line that has already undergone extensive changes.

Baltimore’s acquisition of Jurgens should eventually help that situation, although the center is not expected to play this weekend because he remains in concussion protocol.

Atlanta presents a particularly difficult matchup for a backup quarterback. The Falcons have scored 80 points in consecutive victories, including Monday’s 45-24 demolition of New Orleans behind five rushing touchdowns.

Baltimore enters at 3-1 and remains tied with Cleveland atop the AFC North. Losing Jackson for even one game could complicate that race, particularly with division games against the Browns and Bengals approaching later in October.

Bengals Still Waiting on Chase and Higgins

Cincinnati’s receiving situation remains unsettled after both Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins missed Wednesday’s practice.

Chase remains in the NFL’s concussion protocol following Sunday’s loss to Jacksonville, while Higgins is recovering from an adductor injury suffered late in the same game. Head coach Zac Taylor considers both players day-to-day and has not ruled either out against Miami.

The situation is particularly difficult because Cincinnati’s depth was already compromised before Sunday.

Andrei Iosivas remains on injured reserve with a thumb injury, while Colbie Young is dealing with a knee problem. That leaves Dohnte Meyers and Mitchell Tinsley among the team’s primary healthy receiving options.

Higgins was outstanding before his injury against Jacksonville, catching 11 passes for 157 yards. Chase had three receptions for 27 yards before leaving with his concussion.

Cincinnati is 2-2 and faces a Miami team still searching for its first victory. That would ordinarily present an opportunity for Joe Burrow and the Bengals to get their offense moving again, but the absence of both starting receivers would dramatically change how Cincinnati approaches the matchup.

The Bengals have two more practices to evaluate their options before making final decisions. Chase must complete the league’s concussion protocol, while Higgins’ availability will depend on how his injury responds throughout the week.

Eagles Promote Dameon Pierce as Backfield Injuries Continue

Philadelphia made another roster move Wednesday, promoting running back Dameon Pierce from the practice squad to the active roster.

Pierce replaces Tank Bigsby, who was placed on injured reserve Tuesday after suffering a core-muscle injury. Saquon Barkley is also dealing with a hamstring problem and did not practice Wednesday, leaving Will Shipley and Pierce as the Eagles’ primary healthy options.

Pierce brings experience from his time in Houston, where he rushed for 939 yards as a rookie in 2022. His production declined over the following seasons, but he gives Philadelphia an experienced runner capable of handling a larger workload if Barkley remains unavailable.

The Eagles are also dealing with injuries elsewhere on offense. DeVonta Smith, Marquise Brown and center Drew Kendall missed Wednesday’s practice, while Dallas Goedert was limited as he continues recovering from a knee injury.

That creates another layer of difficulty following the Jurgens trade. Kendall had been Philadelphia’s replacement at center, and his own knee issue could force the Eagles to make yet another change before facing Jacksonville.

Philadelphia enters Sunday’s London game having lost two consecutive contests while averaging just 13.5 points across those defeats. The offensive line and backfield changes are now happening simultaneously, leaving Nick Sirianni with little time to establish continuity before facing a 3-1 Jaguars team.

CBS Sets Week 4 Ratings Record With Chiefs-Raiders

The NFL’s television business continues producing impressive numbers, and CBS delivered another significant ratings milestone during Week 4.

The network’s late-afternoon Sunday window, featuring Kansas City’s 30-27 victory over Las Vegas in most markets, averaged 28.448 million viewers. CBS reported that the audience was the largest for any NFL game window this season and the biggest Week 4 audience in the history of NFL television coverage.

The Chiefs-Raiders matchup featured two undefeated AFC West teams, creating additional interest around a rivalry that has traditionally drawn strong national audiences.

CBS assigned its lead broadcast team of Jim Nantz, J.J. Watt and Tracy Wolfson to the game. The network’s NFL coverage is now averaging approximately 19.9 million viewers through four weeks, representing a 9% increase over last season’s record-setting pace.

The numbers arrive shortly after CBS officially ended its relationship with Tony Romo, making Watt the permanent lead analyst for the remainder of 2026.

For CBS, the strong audience provides an encouraging early result during a significant transition in its NFL broadcast presentation. The network has changed one of its most recognizable on-air personalities without losing the audience momentum that has made NFL rights increasingly valuable.

Thursday Night Football: Buccaneers at Cowboys

Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Dallas Cowboys — Thursday, 8:15 PM ET — Prime Video

Week 5 begins Thursday night with Tampa Bay trying to avoid an 0-5 start while Dallas looks to move above .500 for the first time this season.

The Buccaneers officially ruled Baker Mayfield out Wednesday because of his injured right thumb. Rookie Jalon Daniels will make his second consecutive start after completing 19 of 27 passes for 148 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in last week’s 17-14 loss to Green Bay.

Daniels also rushed for 55 yards against the Packers, providing Tampa Bay with an additional dimension on offense. However, the Buccaneers will again be asking an inexperienced quarterback to lead a team that has yet to win a game.

Tampa Bay’s defensive injury situation is equally concerning. Antoine Winfield Jr. has been ruled out with a rib injury, while cornerback Benjamin Morrison and linebacker SirVocea Dennis will also miss Thursday’s game.

There is some encouraging news for the Buccaneers. Rookie pass rusher Rueben Bain Jr. practiced fully and is expected to return after missing the previous two games.

Dallas has its own injury concerns, although the Cowboys could receive an important offensive-line addition.

Guard Tyler Smith practiced fully Wednesday and is listed as questionable after recovering from thumb surgery. Linebacker DeMarvion Overshown, cornerback Cobie Durant and offensive tackle Drew Shelton have been ruled out.

The Cowboys enter at 2-2 following Sunday’s 34-30 comeback victory over Houston. Dak Prescott threw for 335 yards in that game, while CeeDee Lamb caught 17 passes for 189 yards and the winning touchdown.

Dallas has scored 65 points over its last two games, giving the Cowboys an offense that appears capable of producing even when the defense struggles. Tampa Bay has been more competitive defensively than its record suggests, but the Buccaneers have repeatedly failed to generate enough offense to finish games.

Thursday’s matchup places considerable pressure on both teams for different reasons. Dallas has an opportunity to establish its first winning record of the season and enter an extended break with momentum, while Tampa Bay faces the prospect of falling five games below .500 before the rest of the league even plays its Week 5 schedule.

The quarterback matchup makes the challenge especially clear. Prescott has the experience and offensive weapons to exploit Tampa Bay’s defensive injuries, while Daniels must protect the football and create enough opportunities with his mobility to keep the Buccaneers competitive.

For Tampa Bay, another loss would make the climb back into the NFC South race extraordinarily difficult. For Dallas, failing to capitalize on a winless opponent starting a rookie quarterback would erase much of the momentum generated by Sunday’s comeback in Houston.
