Greg DeMarco ranks the five NFL Week 8 matchups that matter most, led by Vikings-Lions, Bears-Seahawks and Chiefs-Broncos.

The NFL schedule gives us 16 games every week, but they don’t all carry the same weight. Some can change a division race. Some put two of the league’s best teams directly across from each other. Others give a contender a chance to prove the numbers are real—or expose a team we may have been giving too much credit.

Now these aren’t necessarily the five games with the prettiest records or the biggest television windows. They’re the five Week 8 matchups that matter most when you combine the standings, my NFL Power Rankings, major player storylines and what the result could mean going forward.

#5 — Baltimore Ravens at Buffalo Bills

  • Power Rankings: Buffalo #5 | Baltimore #16
  • Records: Buffalo 5-1 | Baltimore 4-3
  • Sunday, 1:00 PM ET

Baltimore badly needs a reset. The Ravens have dropped from sixth to 16th in our Power Rankings over the last two weeks, capped by Cincinnati walking into Baltimore and handing them a 35-13 beating. At 4-3, they are still very much alive in an AFC North where nobody has separated, but another loss would leave them with four defeats before November and potentially create real distance between Baltimore and the division leaders.

The biggest storyline is Lamar Jackson. After missing Baltimore’s last three games, Jackson was a full participant in practice this week, putting a potential return against Buffalo firmly on the radar. That changes the entire complexion of this matchup. Buffalo comes off its bye at 5-1 and sits fifth in our rankings, but the Bills have not consistently overwhelmed opponents despite their record. Baltimore getting its quarterback back would provide a much more serious test.

There’s history here, too. The last two Ravens-Bills meetings were decided by two points or fewer. If Baltimore goes into Buffalo and wins—especially with Jackson returning—we probably start viewing the Ravens very differently next Tuesday. If Buffalo handles them anyway, the Bills strengthen their standing among the AFC elite while Baltimore’s early-season concerns become much harder to dismiss.

#4 — Cleveland Browns at Pittsburgh Steelers

  • Power Rankings: Pittsburgh #10 | Cleveland #13
  • Records: Pittsburgh 5-2 | Cleveland 5-2
  • Sunday, 1:00 PM ET

You don’t need to manufacture stakes for this one. Cleveland and Pittsburgh are both 5-2, they are fighting at the top of the AFC North, and the Browns already beat the Steelers 27-24 earlier this season. A Cleveland sweep would give the Browns an enormous advantage in both the standings and the head-to-head tiebreaker.

Our model remains somewhat skeptical of Cleveland despite the record. The Browns rank 13th because they have actually been outscored on average this season, while Pittsburgh sits 10th with a similarly modest statistical profile. In other words, both teams have accumulated wins faster than they have accumulated dominant performances.

That makes the rematch especially useful. If Cleveland beats Pittsburgh for a second time, at some point you stop arguing with 6-2 and a season sweep of one of the primary division rivals. If Pittsburgh protects home field, the Steelers erase Cleveland’s head-to-head advantage, potentially reclaim control of the AFC North and give us a much cleaner argument for keeping them above the Browns.

#3 — Kansas City Chiefs at Denver Broncos

  • Power Rankings: Kansas City #3 | Denver #11
  • Records: Kansas City 5-1 | Denver 5-2
  • Sunday, 4:25 PM ET

Kansas City’s first loss was not subtle. Seattle held the Chiefs to three points in a 20-3 defeat, dropping Kansas City from second to third in our rankings and raising the first real questions about a team that had been rolling through the opening portion of the schedule.

Now they walk directly into an AFC West game against a 5-2 Denver team that has quietly built one of the better résumés in football. The Broncos have won five of seven while navigating a difficult schedule, including victories over Jacksonville, the Rams and Seattle. Their only losses came against San Francisco and these same Chiefs.

That previous meeting matters. Kansas City beat Denver 31-10 in Week 1, one of the reasons I kept the Chiefs above Jacksonville this week despite the raw Power Score placing the Jaguars higher. Denver has changed the conversation considerably since then, though. A Broncos win would pull them even with Kansas City in the loss column and demonstrate that the 21-point Week 1 result no longer represents where these teams are today.

For Kansas City, this is an immediate opportunity to remind everyone why one ugly night in Seattle shouldn’t outweigh the first six weeks. For Denver, it is a chance to turn “surprising 5-2 team” into legitimate AFC West contender.

#2 — Chicago Bears at Seattle Seahawks

  • Power Rankings: Chicago #7 | Seattle #8
  • Records: Chicago 5-2 | Seattle 4-3
  • Monday, 8:15 PM ET

It is difficult to create a cleaner Power Rankings matchup than No. 7 against No. 8.

Chicago has steadily gone from interesting statistical team to legitimate contender. The Bears are 5-2, have played a strong schedule and just added New England to a résumé that keeps getting better. Caleb Williams has also played himself into the broader MVP conversation, giving Chicago something far more significant than an encouraging start: the possibility that its quarterback is becoming one of the league’s true difference-makers.

Seattle may have made the louder statement last week. After consecutive losses caused the Seahawks to tumble seven places in our rankings, they responded by holding Kansas City to three points in a 20-3 win. That performance immediately sent Seattle six spots back up the board.

Now we get to find out which surge is more meaningful. Chicago can go on the road in prime time and validate its place among the NFC’s best teams. Seattle can follow the Kansas City victory by beating another top-eight team and completely erase the concern created by its two-game skid. Whichever team wins is going to have a compelling argument for moving even higher when we calculate next week’s rankings.

#1 — Minnesota Vikings at Detroit Lions

  • Power Rankings: Minnesota #1 | Detroit #9
  • Records: Minnesota 6-0 | Detroit 4-2
  • Sunday, 1:00 PM ET

There was never much debate over No. 1.

Minnesota enters Week 8 as the NFL’s only undefeated team and, for the first time, the No. 1 team in The Chairshot’s Power Rankings. The Vikings have survived every challenge so far, but now comes the kind of divisional road game that can tell us whether an undefeated start has become something much bigger.

Detroit is 4-2, coming off a divisional win over Green Bay and sitting ninth in our rankings. Jared Goff has played well enough to push himself into the MVP conversation, but Minnesota’s defense presents one of the toughest quarterback tests in football. The Vikings have been elite against the pass across virtually every important efficiency measurement and have generated pressure at an extraordinary rate. That is exactly the formula that can make life uncomfortable for Goff.

The standings make it even more important. Minnesota leads an NFC North where Chicago is 5-2, Detroit is 4-2 and Green Bay is 4-3. A Vikings win in Detroit would move Minnesota to 7-0, hand the Lions their third loss and give the division leader another road victory over a legitimate contender. Suddenly the Vikings wouldn’t merely be undefeated—they would have begun creating real separation in arguably the deepest division in football.

Detroit has the opposite opportunity. Beat the last undefeated team, move to 5-2 and pull Minnesota directly back toward the rest of the division. It would also give the Lions the signature victory that could push them well beyond their current No. 9 ranking.

By Sunday afternoon, either Minnesota will have given us even more reason to believe it belongs at No. 1—or Detroit will have blown the NFC North race wide open.
