Cody Rhodes uses Randy Orton’s punt kick, AEW honors PAC with a new Full Gear logo, and STARDOM announces an IWGP Women’s Title match in Mexico.
Cody Rhodes crossed a line on Friday’s SmackDown, delivering Randy Orton’s signature punt kick to Baron Corbin while The Viper watched. What began as an attempt to confront Orton ended with Rhodes demonstrating just how far their rivalry has pushed him, raising questions about what happens when the two finally meet in a singles match.
Elsewhere, AEW unveiled an emotional tribute to the late PAC in the updated artwork for November’s Full Gear pay-per-view, while STARDOM confirmed that Syuri will defend the IWGP Women’s Championship against Kira in Mexico. AEW also prepares for Saturday’s WrestleDream, headlined by Will Ospreay defending the World Championship against seven challengers in the first Clockwork Carnage Match.
Friday’s SmackDown delivered several additional developments, including Trick Williams confronting Sami Zayn, Paige defeating Nikki Bella and Damian Priest’s unsettling victory over R-Truth.
It’s the Chairshot Wrestling News Report for October 17, 2026!
Cody Rhodes Uses Randy Orton’s Punt Kick Against Baron Corbin
Cody Rhodes has spent much of his rivalry with Randy Orton trying to prove that he can defeat his former mentor without abandoning the principles that define him. Friday’s SmackDown suggested that Orton is finally getting what he wants, as Rhodes delivered a vicious punt kick to Baron Corbin during the show’s closing moments.
Rhodes entered the ring carrying a steel chair and demanded that Orton confront him. Baron Corbin interrupted instead, accusing Rhodes of being more interested in presenting himself as a hero than doing whatever was necessary to win. Rhodes responded by challenging Corbin to an immediate match, giving the confrontation a physical outlet even before Orton appeared.
The match did not last long before Orton interfered, pulling Rhodes from the ring and attacking him to force a disqualification. Orton attempted to deliver his signature punt, but Rhodes escaped and turned the tables. When Rhodes prepared to use the move against Orton, Corbin intervened and gave The Viper an opportunity to retreat.
Rhodes then redirected his anger toward Corbin, connecting with a Cody Cutter before delivering the punt kick as Orton watched from the entrance area. The moment provided the clearest indication yet that Orton’s campaign to change Rhodes is having an effect, even if the American Nightmare has not yet turned that aggression directly against his intended target.
The significance goes beyond one particularly violent attack. Orton’s punt has long represented his willingness to inflict punishment beyond what is necessary to win a wrestling match, while Rhodes has generally presented himself as a champion who refuses to take those shortcuts. By borrowing the move, Rhodes acknowledged that Orton has changed the terms of their rivalry, whether he intended to or not.
WWE has not formally announced another singles match between the two, but the confrontation gives the company a more personal direction than another dispute over rankings or championship opportunities. Rhodes now has to confront the possibility that defeating Orton could require him to become more like the man he wants to beat.
WWE SmackDown Results & Fallout — October 16, 2026
WWE presented Friday Night SmackDown from the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, California, continuing the fallout from Money in the Bank while building several programs toward Crown Jewel. The episode featured five matches, with championship tension, personal rivalries and controversial finishes throughout the evening.
- Trick Williams def. Johnny Gargano in a non-title match.
- Paige def. Nikki Bella.
- Damian Priest def. R-Truth via referee stoppage.
- AAA Cruiserweight Championship — Rey Fenix (c) def. Ricky Saints via disqualification to retain.
- Cody Rhodes def. Baron Corbin via disqualification following Randy Orton’s interference.
United States Champion Trick Williams opened the show by confronting WWE Champion Sami Zayn, challenging Zayn’s dismissive attitude toward his accomplishments. Johnny Gargano stepped forward to defend Zayn, leading to a non-title match that Williams won with the Trick Shot and a Book End despite interference attempts by Candice LeRae. The victory strengthened Williams’ position as a potential future challenger, while Zayn remained focused on his upcoming champion-versus-champion match against Roman Reigns at Crown Jewel. Zayn also approached Rey Fenix about Penta’s Money in the Bank intentions, but received no assurance that the briefcase holder would target Reigns rather than his own championship.
Paige gained revenge against Nikki Bella in a rematch that ended with another controversial pinfall. After Bella used the ropes to win their previous encounter, Paige returned the favor by using the same tactic to secure the three-count. The result leaves their rivalry unsettled, particularly with Bella having already expressed interest in challenging Women’s Champion Chelsea Green.
Damian Priest’s match against former partner R-Truth ended when the referee stopped the contest after Truth appeared to injure himself attempting a top-rope dropkick. Priest received the victory but appeared ready to continue the attack with a chair until Nathan Frazer and Axiom intervened. WWE had not confirmed a legitimate injury diagnosis following the broadcast, leaving the stoppage as a televised development rather than evidence of a confirmed medical condition.
Rey Fenix retained the AAA Cruiserweight Championship against Ricky Saints by disqualification after Saints shoved referee Charles Robinson into the ropes and later confronted the official over a disputed pinfall. Saints attacked Fenix after the decision, keeping their championship rivalry unresolved. Elsewhere, new WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions Alexa Bliss and Tatum Paxley were confronted and attacked by Fatal Influence, with Fallon Henley and Lainey Reid emerging as potential challengers.
General Manager Nick Aldis also announced that Blake Monroe will face Giulia in a Street Fight next week. With multiple championship programs developing and several matches ending without decisive resolutions, SmackDown established plenty of material for its next episode while Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton remained the night’s central story.

AEW Honors PAC With Updated Full Gear Logo
AEW has updated the artwork for November’s Full Gear pay-per-view to honor PAC, whose unexpected death in September sent shockwaves through the wrestling industry. The revised logo incorporates several recognizable elements from his career, connecting the event’s identity to the performer who helped inspire its name.
The artwork includes a Black Arrow warning sign, referencing PAC’s signature finishing maneuver, along with two black arrows incorporated into the event’s mechanical imagery. His familiar chair and towel, both associated with his appearances alongside the Death Riders, are also featured.
The tribute carries particular significance because the name Full Gear originated from PAC’s appearance at AEW’s launch rally in 2019. While other participants attended in formal attire, PAC appeared in his wrestling gear to confront Hangman Page. The moment became a recurring joke on Being the Elite and eventually provided the name for one of AEW’s annual pay-per-views.
Full Gear has remained part of the promotion’s pay-per-view calendar since its inaugural year, making the connection more than an incidental piece of company history. PAC’s early involvement helped establish AEW’s identity, and his matches continued to contribute to its programming throughout the promotion’s development.
This year’s Full Gear is scheduled for November 14 in Phoenix, Arizona. The updated design gives the event a personal connection to PAC while allowing AEW to acknowledge his influence without turning the tribute into another storyline.
AEW has already honored PAC through its television programming, but incorporating these details into a major event’s branding ensures that his legacy remains visible beyond the immediate period of mourning. For a performer whose presentation was defined by intensity, precision and an unmistakable visual identity, the design draws on elements wrestling fans will recognize immediately.
STARDOM Announces Syuri vs. Kira for IWGP Women’s Championship in Mexico
STARDOM and New Japan Pro-Wrestling have confirmed that Syuri will defend the IWGP Women’s Championship against Kira at Lucha Kingdom on November 16 at Arena México. The match was announced through CMLL Informa, adding another major championship attraction to the international event.
Syuri captured the IWGP Women’s Championship from Saya Kamitani at Wrestle Kingdom 20 and has successfully defended it four times in 2026. Her challengers have included Athena, Megan Bayne, Rina Yamashita and Natsupoi, giving her reign a mixture of international opponents and familiar Japanese rivals.
The upcoming defense will also mark Syuri’s first match in Mexico since 2015, providing an additional milestone for the champion. Kira now has the opportunity to challenge for one of Japanese women’s wrestling’s most prominent international championships in one of Mexico’s most historic wrestling venues.
Arena México has hosted generations of major lucha libre matches, and placing the IWGP Women’s Championship on the card continues the growing relationship between Japanese and Mexican wrestling. The event combines talent from NJPW and CMLL, with several matches bringing together performers who normally compete in different countries and promotional environments.
The card also includes Hechicero against Zack Sabre Jr., while additional tag team matches feature representatives of HOUSE OF TORTURE and CMLL. The inclusion of Syuri and Kira gives the show a significant women’s championship attraction alongside its established international matchups.
For STARDOM, the defense offers an opportunity to present its champion to another wrestling audience while reinforcing the international identity of the IWGP Women’s Championship. For Kira, the match represents a substantial opportunity regardless of the result, as she challenges an established champion with experience across multiple wrestling styles.

Pro Wrestling NOAH: Kenoh Wins, Mystery Wrestler Revealed Ahead of Wrestle Odyssey
Pro Wrestling NOAH’s October 15 Legacy Rise event at Korakuen Hall delivered two significant developments ahead of Wrestle Odyssey II on October 25. Kenoh defeated Masa Kitamiya in a Lumberjack Death Match with unexpected assistance from a familiar face, while the mysterious wrestler known as M.P.I. finally revealed his identity.
Kenoh overcame Kitamiya after Shuhei Taniguchi unexpectedly revived his Maybach Taniguchi persona and intervened on his behalf. With Team 2000X providing Kitamiya a numerical advantage around ringside, Kenoh appeared to be fighting an uphill battle until Maybach arrived. Kenoh eventually secured the victory with a diving foot stomp after 21 minutes of action.
The return carries additional significance because Taniguchi is approaching retirement, with his final match scheduled for January 2027. He will team with KENTA against Kitamiya and Takashi Sugiura at Wrestle Odyssey II, giving the rivalry another chapter before his career concludes.
Elsewhere, Dragongate star Luis Mante was revealed as the mysterious M.P.I. following a tag team victory alongside Shuji Kondo over Naomichi Marufuji and HAYATA. Mante subsequently unmasked at Marufuji’s request, confirming his intention to challenge for the GHC National Championship. The two will meet at Wrestle Odyssey II in Tokyo’s Ryogoku Sumo Hall.
The October 25 event will also feature GHC Heavyweight Champion Tetsuya Naito defending against N-1 Victory winner OZAWA. Their rivalry gained momentum at Korakuen when OZAWA and Alpha Wolf defeated Naito and BUSHI in tag team competition, providing another important result as NOAH approaches one of its biggest remaining events of the year.
AEW WrestleDream Preview — October 17, 2026
AEW presents WrestleDream tonight from Addition Financial Arena in Orlando, Florida, with Will Ospreay defending the AEW World Championship against seven challengers in the first Clockwork Carnage Match. The pay-per-view begins at 8 p.m. ET, following the Tailgate Brawl pre-show at 7 p.m. ET.
- AEW World Championship, Clockwork Carnage — Will Ospreay (c) vs. Samoa Joe vs. Mike Bailey vs. Adam Copeland vs. Konosuke Takeshita vs. Kazuchika Okada vs. Ricochet vs. Darby Allin.
- AEW Women’s World Championship — Mercedes Moné (c) vs. Thekla.
- AEW World Tag Team Championship — The Young Bucks (c) vs. Kyle Fletcher & Kevin Knight.
- AEW World Trios Championship, Two Out of Three Falls — Swerve Strickland & The New Level (c) vs. Hangman Page, Bandido & Brody King.
- AEW Continental Championship — Jon Moxley (c) vs. Mark Davis.
- AEW National Championship — Andrade El Ídolo (c) vs. Tommaso Ciampa.
- TBS Championship, Four-Way — Persephone (c) vs. Dani Luna vs. Hyan vs. Queen Aminata.
- Chris Jericho vs. Nick Wayne.
- Tailgate Brawl — FTR vs. Motor City Machine Guns, first match in their best-of-five series.
- Tailgate Brawl — Sisters of Sin vs. Divine Dominion.
Clockwork Carnage represents AEW’s latest attempt to introduce a distinctive main-event format, combining staggered entrances, eliminations and a timed scoring phase. Ospreay enters as champion, but the unusual rules mean that traditional strategies for retaining a title may not apply. With seven opponents possessing different styles and alliances, the match creates opportunities for temporary cooperation as well as sudden betrayals.
Adam Copeland enters following his announcement that 2027 will be his final year in professional wrestling, while Samoa Joe and Konosuke Takeshita bring substantial championship credentials. Darby Allin and Kazuchika Okada enter as reigning champions in their own right, although neither of their respective titles is at stake.
The undercard offers several additional championship stories. Mercedes Moné defends against Thekla, Jon Moxley faces Mark Davis after being pinned by him on television, and the Young Bucks meet Kyle Fletcher and Kevin Knight in a match involving the Don Callis Family. The TBS Championship four-way also brings together competitors whose recent television encounters established a crowded field of challengers.
One planned title match will not take place. Jamie Hayter remains sidelined following All Out, preventing the Brawling Birds from defending the Women’s World Tag Team Championship against Kris Statlander and Harley Cameron. Sisters of Sin against Divine Dominion has been added to the pre-show instead, but the replacement is not a championship contest.
The event also features the opening match of FTR and the Motor City Machine Guns’ best-of-five series, a rivalry that could extend well beyond Saturday. With a major championship main event, several ongoing feuds and the possibility of additional developments, WrestleDream has the opportunity to reshape AEW’s direction heading into Full Gear.
AEW Teases Potential Arrival Ahead of WrestleDream
AEW also released another mysterious promotional video Friday, continuing a series of teasers pointing toward a possible arrival at WrestleDream. The footage features training imagery and a metronome, with the presentation suggesting that the reveal could occur during Saturday’s event.
Fightful has connected the vignettes to Ilja Dragunov, reporting that the former WWE star has been expected to join AEW. The promotion has not formally announced Dragunov’s arrival or advertised him for a match, however, so the connection remains a reported possibility rather than an officially confirmed appearance.
A debut would provide another notable addition to AEW’s roster, particularly given Dragunov’s reputation for intense, physical matches. For now, the immediate news is the continued teaser campaign and its connection to WrestleDream, not a confirmed contract or scheduled match.
Friday’s SmackDown provided a significant escalation in the rivalry between Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton, while its other developments helped advance multiple championship and personal stories without requiring separate major news sections. AEW’s tribute to PAC and STARDOM’s international championship announcement also demonstrated how much of the day’s wrestling news occurred beyond WWE television.
Saturday’s WrestleDream now takes center stage, with an unusual world championship main event and several other titles at stake. The outcome will shape AEW’s immediate direction, while Full Gear, Crown Jewel and Lucha Kingdom provide important destinations for the weeks ahead.
