Chairshot Top 5: Shortest WWE World Championship Reigns
Sami Zayn’s WWE title reign ended quickly on Raw, but these five WWE world championship reigns were even shorter, from André the Giant to Seth Rollins.
Sami Zayn’s WWE title reign ended quickly on Raw, but these five WWE world championship reigns were even shorter, from André the Giant to Seth Rollins.
As many feared, Sami Zayn’s run as Undisputed WWE Champion came to a sudden end on Monday Night Raw when CM Punk returned in Chicago, replaced Cody Rhodes after Gunther’s backstage attack, and defeated Zayn to capture the championship. WWE’s official Raw results confirm Punk pinned Zayn after hitting a Helluva Kick of his own and following with the Go-To-Sleep, ending Zayn’s reign before it could even reach double digits.
That puts Sami in a rough neighborhood, but not quite in the most infamous group. When it comes to the shortest completed WWE world championship reigns, the top five remain a wild mix of cash-ins, impromptu matches, authority figures, and one of the strangest title transfers in company history. WWE previously listed these five reigns together at a combined 13 minutes and 34 seconds, and somehow, that number still feels impossible.
5. Daniel Bryan, WWE SummerSlam 2013
4 minutes, 7 seconds
Daniel Bryan’s win over John Cena at SummerSlam 2013 should have been one of the purest feel-good endings in modern WWE history. Bryan defeated Cena cleanly for the WWE Championship, with Triple H serving as special guest referee, seemingly completing one of the most organic rises the company had seen in years.
Then the celebration turned into the launch point for The Authority. Triple H hit Bryan with a Pedigree, Randy Orton cashed in his Money in the Bank contract, and Bryan’s first WWE Championship reign was over in just over four minutes. The moment was brutal, but it also poured gasoline on the “Yes!” movement and helped create the road to WrestleMania 30.
4. John Cena, WWE Elimination Chamber 2010
3 minutes, 33 seconds
John Cena survived the Elimination Chamber in 2010, outlasting Randy Orton, Triple H, Sheamus, Ted DiBiase, and Kofi Kingston to win the WWE Championship. That should have been enough for any champion to earn at least one night of celebration, but Vince McMahon had other plans.
Immediately after Cena’s win, McMahon ordered him to defend the championship against Batista. Cena was exhausted, Batista was fresh, and the result was exactly what the setup promised. One Batista Bomb later, Cena had one of the shortest WWE Championship reigns ever, and Batista was on his way to WrestleMania as champion.
3. Yokozuna, WWE WrestleMania IX
2 minutes, 6 seconds
Yokozuna defeated Bret Hart in the main event of WrestleMania IX, thanks to Mr. Fuji throwing salt into Hart’s eyes. It was a dirty finish, but it still made Yokozuna WWE Champion on the biggest stage of the year.
Then Hulk Hogan came to check on Bret, Fuji made the mistake of agreeing to an immediate match, and everything fell apart. Fuji tried the salt again, missed, blinded Yokozuna, and Hogan won the championship in 22 seconds. Yokozuna’s first WWE Championship reign became one of the fastest title losses in company history.
2. Seth Rollins, WWE Money in the Bank 2016
2 minutes
Seth Rollins returned from injury and defeated Roman Reigns at Money in the Bank 2016 to reclaim the WWE Championship. It was a major comeback moment for Rollins, especially considering he had never lost the title in the ring before being forced to vacate it.
The celebration barely got started. Dean Ambrose, who had won Money in the Bank earlier that night, cashed in on Rollins and completed one of the best Shield-related title sequences WWE has ever booked. Rollins beat Reigns, Ambrose beat Rollins, and all three Shield members held the WWE Championship on the same night.
1. André the Giant, WWE (The) Main Event
1 minute, 48 seconds
André the Giant’s WWE Championship reign remains the shortest of them all. At The Main Event in February 1988, André defeated Hulk Hogan with the help of referee chaos and Ted DiBiase’s money-fueled scheme, ending Hogan’s legendary title run in one of the most-watched moments in wrestling television history.
Then André immediately handed the championship to “The Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase, creating one of the strangest title situations WWE had ever seen. The title transfer would not stand the way DiBiase wanted, but André’s reign still counts. One minute and 48 seconds was all it took to create a record that has survived decades of Money in the Bank cash-ins, surprise challenges, and WWE chaos.
Sami Zayn’s nine-day run will sting because of how much potential it had, especially after the emotional shock of his championship victory. But history says short reigns are not always dead ends. Daniel Bryan’s four-minute heartbreak helped fuel WrestleMania 30, Seth Rollins’ two-minute disaster became part of The Shield’s larger legacy, and André the Giant’s record-setting reign remains unforgettable nearly four decades later.
Sometimes the length of a championship reign matters less than the story it leaves behind. Sami Zayn may not have cracked this list, but maybe…just maybe…his loss to CM Punk on Raw will be the start of his next major chapter.

CM Punk Defeats Sami Zayn To Win The Undisputed WWE Championship
CM Punk is WWE Champion again. After Gunther attacked Cody Rhodes and removed him from the scheduled Monday Night Raw main event, Chicago’s own CM Punk stepped in to challenge Sami Zayn for the Undisputed WWE Championship. Punk avoided the Helluva Kick, hit one of his own, followed with the Go-To-Sleep, and pinned Zayn to win the title in front of his hometown crowd.
The moment carries obvious historical weight. Punk winning a world championship in Chicago immediately recalls Money in the Bank 2011, and Punk even recreated his famous “title in the fridge” photo after the win. For Sami Zayn, the loss ends his first world title reign almost as quickly as it began, while Punk now appears positioned as one of WWE’s central figures heading into SummerSlam season.
Raw Delivers Two More Championship Developments
CM Punk’s title win was not the only championship news coming out of Raw. Bron Breakker and Austin Theory defeated The Street Profits to regain the World Tag Team Championship after Maxxine Dupri interfered and delivered a low blow to Angelo Dawkins, while Sol Ruca successfully defended the Women’s Intercontinental Championship against Raquel Rodriguez after IYO SKY neutralized Liv Morgan and Roxanne Perez at ringside. The Vision’s tag title win keeps Seth Rollins’ group positioned as one of Raw’s central acts, while Ruca’s successful defense continues her rise on the main roster.
WWE Monday Night Raw Quick Results (7/6/2026) from Chicago
- Bron Breakker and Austin Theory defeated The Street Profits to win the World Tag Team Championship.
- Sol Ruca defeated Raquel Rodriguez to retain the Women’s Intercontinental Championship.
- Ethan Page and Rusev defeated Chad Gable and Dragon Lee.
- CM Punk defeated Sami Zayn to win the WWE Championship.

Sheamus Moved to WWE Alumni Section
Sheamus is reportedly set to leave WWE after nearly 20 years with the company. Multiple outlets have reported that Sheamus’ contract is expiring soon and that he rejected a restructured extension, along with the development today that Sheamus was moved to WWE.com’s alumni section. The report adds that Sheamus was not released, making this a contract-expiration situation rather than a standard WWE cut.
AEW All Out Returns To The Chicago Area
Speaking of Chicago, AEW has officially announced that All Out 2026 will take place on Saturday, September 26, at NOW Arena in the Chicago area. AEW lists VIP and premium access beginning Tuesday, July 7, presales beginning Thursday, July 9, and the general on-sale scheduled for Monday, July 13.
Gabe Kidd Wins IWGP Global Heavyweight Championship At NJPW Road To G1
New Japan’s Road to G1 event delivered a major title change, as Gabe Kidd defeated Shota Umino to win the IWGP Global Heavyweight Championship at Korakuen Hall. YOH also retained the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship against Francesco Akira, while Ryohei Oiwa and OSKAR won their respective G1 play-in matches.

ROH Death Before Dishonor Set For Philadelphia
Ring of Honor is heading back to Philadelphia for Death Before Dishonor. The event is scheduled for Friday, August 21, at the 2300 Arena, continuing ROH’s connection to one of wrestling’s most recognizable venues.
Tonight’s Watch List
Tuesday’s focus is WWE NXT on The CW, headlined by Kendal Grey’s first defense of the NXT Women’s Championship against Nattie after Grey captured the title from Lola Vice at Great American Bash. NXT will also feature two number one contender’s matches: O.T.M. vs. DarkState vs. BirthRight vs. Sean Legacy & Dorian Van Dux, with the winners earning an NXT Tag Team Championship shot, and Izzi Dame vs. Layla Diggs vs. Lizzy Rain vs. Thea Hail, with the winner becoming next in line for the NXT Women’s North American Championship.
CM Punk winning the WWE Championship in Chicago is the clear lead story, but Monday was a strong example of why a daily wrestling report makes sense. Raw delivered multiple title developments, AEW and ROH added major dates to the calendar, and NJPW shook up the Road to G1 before the tournament even begins. For one morning, that is more than enough wrestling news to start the day.
