NJPW and AXS set the scene for this epic Wrestling Dontaku 2019 finale!

“Legacies will be defined” as The Rainmaker pushes past redemption and moves on to reestablish himself. It was through the 2019 New Japan Cup that Kazuchika Okada earned another chance at the IWGP Heavyweight Champion and Jay White, and it was at G1 Supercard that he took that title back! The now five-time champion keeps his promise of giving Cold Skull Sanada the first shot! The story of Okada and Sanada goes back to Sanada’s debut in 2016, in which he attacked Okada on Los Ingobernables de Japon leader Tetsuya Naito’s behalf. Sanada has climbed the ranks in the singles division, but is this the night he finally proves he is worthy? Or will Okada continue to prove he’s on another level?

Meanwhile, the Stone Pitbull and the King of Darkness have recently renewed a rivalry. They teamed with Okada and Sanada in a tag team match on the first night, and it went Evil’s way when put Tomohiro Ishii in the Scorpion Deathlock, a move copied from Ishii’s mentor! However, it was the referee who called the match for the sake of Ishii’s well-being, Ishii did not submit. Will Evil finally make Ishii give in? Or will Ishii get revenge for Evil adding insult to injury?

The Hawaiian Hulk has a title belt in both ROH and NJPW! But that only means more work for the Olympic wrestler, and that includes facing the Sliest Wrestler in the World, backed by Suzuki-Gun! Will all the tricks in Taichi’s book amount to nothing against the colossal cross-promotion champion?

Finally, after a human demolition derby, the Stone Pitbull is victorious! Two of the toughest in NJPW went head to head and Ishii proves the tougher, but when and where will we see this match again?

NJPW Media Backstage Interviews

Ishii says “That’s what you get, facing me in a singles match.” Did Evil learn his lesson? If not, Ishii will happily teach him it again.

But then Taichi walks in to smirk at Ishii. “Oi. Congrats on earning the right to challenge me.” What? You heard Taichi right, Ishii now has the right to challenge for the NEVER Openweight Championship. So Taichi wants after Ishii, huh? Well there’s no one else, so Ishii might as well be the new #1 Contender. Be happy to be chosen. Well if Taichi wants this, Ishii’s game. No it’s about Taichi throwing the Pitbull a bone. Then ask him nicely? As if. The Pitbull should be begging. Accept it and be grateful. Yeah, Taichi seems so grateful, the way he’s treated that belt already. It was broken when Taichi got it from Cobb. Whatever. Ishii accepts the challenge. No, no, Ishii is challenging Taichi, got it? Whatever you say. Weirdo.

But it’s been awhile since Ishii’s seen that belt. Taichi just wants revenge from the New Japan Cup. Reminds Ishii of another wrestler in NJPW. But Ishii’s up for this match anytime, because the results will be the same. When and where will NJPW give us this new NEVER Openweight Championship showdown?

Hiroshi Tanahashi returns to NJPW!

The Ace has been gone since suffering an elbow injury and going through the subsequent surgery to repair it. He surprises the fans here at Wrestling Dontaku, because he has something he wishes to say.

“Tanahashi desu. I had surgery on my left elbow. The cast came off the other day, and I got my stitches out. But I wish I could have competed here.” It was a year ago that here, in Fukuoka, that the crowd was behind him. He rode that wave of energy to win the 28th G1 Climax that August. And then he won the IWGP Heavyweight Championship in the Tokyo Dome. But then in February, he lost, and his losses piled up. And he feels as low as the floor right now. Fans cheer, wanting him to rise back up.

Tanahashi knows he’s starting from the bottom. But as he stands back up, he vows that on June 5th, at Ryogoku, he’ll make another comeback! He continues to say that after that, he’ll again go after the IWGP Heavyweight title! Will the Once in a Century Talent make yet another heroic return?

But wait, here comes Jay White and Gedo! Fans boo as the Switchblade takes the mic from Tanahashi. Gedo tells White some things, and then White grins at Tanahashi. Fans boo as White begins to speak. “You want the IWGP Heavyweight Championship? You think you deserve the IWGP Heavyweight Championship?” The line starts behind White, and Tanahashi is at the back, even behind Hirooki Goto! White is the REAL champion, and it doesn’t matter who wins between Okada and Sanada, White’s turn is next. “Do you understand me?” Gedo makes a move on Tanahashi, but it’s just so White can get his cheap shot in! White stomps Tanahashi as fans boo and the bell rings. White rains down rights then stomps him more.

White fights them off but Tanahashi is safe from further harm. White picks up the mic again to tell Tanahashi, “I am next!” Fans boo White and cheer Tanahashi. Will the Switchblade and The Ace settle things in the ring to decide who really is next to face the top champion in NJPW? For that matter, we still have the main event to go. Who will be the top champion in NJPW after the dust settles?

He drags Okada back up, cravat to Salida, but Okada slips out. Okada spins but Sanada blocks to then spin for a roaring elbow! Cravat, Sliced Bread, but into a SPINNING TOMBSTONE! And the TRUE Rainmaker!! Cover, Okada wins!!

Winner: Kazuchika Okada, by pinfall; still IWGP Heavyweight Champion

The first defense of this fifth reign and The Rainmaker is STILL the top champion in NJPW! Okada goes 6-0 against Sanada all-time, but it gets tougher and tougher each time! Will we get to see lucky number 7 in the future? Will Sanada finally break through? Or is Okada just on too high a level?

Okada offers a hand to Sanada to help him up. Sanada declines, helping himself up. However, Sanada does take the hand in a small handshake, to then give a fist bump. It sounds like there will be a seventh round one day, we can only wait and see.

NJPW skips to after Okada is again wearing his IWGP Heavyweight Championship belt, to when Okada takes up the mic. “Sanada-san! At the signing ceremony, you honored me by calling me your rival.” That made Okada very happy. So in front of Hakata, he wants to say something to Sanada: he is Okada’s rival, too! Their story has just begun! “But I’m not gonna lose.”

Okada addresses the fans again as he notes “We have changed over from the Heisei Era to Reiwa.” What do the NJPW fans think? Hard to tell. But Okada wonders who will entertain the pro-wrestling world in this Reiwa Era. Okada promises he’ll bring the excitement. He vows to be the star of the new era for the true fans! He’ll bring the heat! “As the 69th IWGP Heavyweight Champion, I will keep the new era exciting.” As long as he’s NJPW’s top champion, he’ll- Wait, the lights go out! A video plays. Is that… CHRIS JERICHO!? The dark clown that Y2J has become says “I’m the Painmaker! And on June 9th at Dominion in Osaka, I will challenge for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship! And I’m gonna win.” Jericho shouts he’ll win, but then hushes himself. Y2J is returning to NJPW and aiming for the top!!

Okada just tells Jericho, “Bring it on, you bastard!” Because Okada vows HE will win! Okada will win and return as champion, to again make it rain! Will Okada continue to be the best in NJPW by beating the Best in the World at What He Does? Or will Jericho completely turn NJPW upside-down at Dominion?

My Thoughts:

One hour of NJPW on AXS alone is great, so two hours is amazing! Especially when they know how to properly book surprises. I didn’t think Taichi would win the NEVER Openweight Championship off of Jeff Cobb in a mostly clean way. Sure he had Miho be his distraction and his shield, but the Suzuki-Gun antics weren’t even deciding factors this time. Well, an argument can be made that they amounted to something, especially the low blow. But for the most part, Taichi managed to just keep on Cobb until Cobb couldn’t get up. At the same time, Cobb being a dual ROH and NJPW champion wasn’t going to last forever, so it was a good move to make it someone mostly unexpected. Now Taichi VS Ishii will be a good first defense for Taichi, I’m just not sure Taichi survives.

For that matter, Ishii VS Evil was insane. It really was just a demolition derby slug fest type fight, and that’s exactly what it should’ve been. Ishii wins not just because he’ll challenge Taichi but because that was the story of him and Evil. Evil got him last time with the Sharpshooter, and that was a great part of the match’s story, but for that reason, Ishii survives the hold and puts Evil away with a standing finisher. And with another G1 Climax on the horizon, Evil can snap back in the NJPW Heavyweight ranks with an impressive showing. I’m honestly surprised Tanahashi is making another comeback, but NJPW without him would also seem odd. White obviously wants to finish Tanahashi for good, that’s another good story going into G1 Climax 29.

NJPW is also building stars properly. Sanada’s history with Okada has been building over the last three years, and it clearly works in getting fans behind Sanada as we heard from the Fukuoka fans. Okada VS Sanada VI, the longest and best match so far of their series, and I really do look forward to a seventh. If anything, the day Sanada beats Okada is the day Sanada reaches that heavyweight/world championship level. He will be the face of NJPW one day, but not until Okada stops. Okada has been such a strong force in NJPW and with that heavyweight championship, he’s almost the NJPW John Cena or Randy Orton. If it weren’t for his matches always being great, I’d say he should move on. If anything, he should still think about going after a different title once this fifth reign ends.

Jericho returning to NJPW is also great, Okada VS Y2J at Dominion will be great, but I don’t think Jericho is the one to end this fifth reign, and certainly not at this point. Beating Jericho will help build Okada’s fifth reign up, and perhaps solidify Okada’s legacy.

My Score: 9.1/10

World Tag League 2024 A Block: Gabe Kidd & SANADA VS KENTA & Chase Owens!

No NJPW round robin tournament would be complete without Bullet Club VS Bullet Club! The Mad Man & Cold Skull lost to Zack Sabre Jr. & Ryohei Oiwa, Fang Revived & Crown Jewel lost to Bishamon, so both teams are in a fighting mood. Which faction within the club comes out feeling Just Too Sweet?

Wait, as Kenta & Chase are helped away, and even as Sanada heads out, Gabe sits cross-legged while he has the mic. “Let me be very effin’ clear. You crossed the line as soon as you ran to Tokyo Sports and started calling me all this s*it. Unprofessional, all this s*it. Let me make this very effin’ clear! You said you wanted, you said the fans wanted, I said it before: I don’t give a F what anyone wants but me! And I wanna end your career! So iitengo (January 5th), Gabe Kidd, Kenny Omega, LET’S EFFIN’ GO!!”

The fans are fired up to hear WrestleDynasty now has a massive crossover match added! But will Gabe keep making this about The Best Bout Machine until it comes back to bite him? Or is that just the motivation he needs so he and Sanada can take the trophies?

Winners: Bishamon, by pinfall (gains 2 points; Takagi & Yota earn 0)

A sudden turnaround, but it can’t be called an upset with how Goto & Hashi have been World Tag League winners and IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Champions besides! But if this is how hard Takagi & Tsuji fought, yet they still fell short, how much harder must they fight to be on top of the block?

As for Bishamon, Hashi has the mic first. “Last year, Bishamon made history be becoming the first-ever IWGP Tag Team Champions to win this league. We also achieved the first-ever threepeat. This year, we’re looking to go undefeated!” The fans cheer that lofty goal, and even chant for “BI-SHA-MON! BI-SHA-MON!” Hashi says then, in Kumamoto, when they win their FOURTH STRAIGHT tournament, “We’ll show you our happiest Zanmai celebration ever.” The fans are certainly intrigued by that. Hashi says Bishamon’s four-peat will come in the blink of an eye!

With that mic drop, the mission is clear! No need to #GetBackUp when you’re still riding high, but will Goto & Hashi continue to add to their historic achievements? Or will a team come along to ruin it all?

Here are the NEW A Block standings!

Jeff Cobb & Callum Newman: 2-0, 4 points
Bishamon: 2-0, 4 points
Shingo Takagi & Yota Tsuji: 1-1, 2 points
Zack Sabre Jr. & Ryohei Oiwa: 1-1, 2 points
Gabe Kidd & Sanada: 1-1, 2 points
Shota Umino & Tomoaki Honma: 1-1, 2 points
Kenta & Chase Owens: 0-2, 0 points
Alex Zayne & Ryusuke Taguchi: 0-2, 0 points

My Thoughts:

A great event for WTL A Block, but I hope there won’t be any more delays in the On Demand upload, there’s too much to do on a Friday to wait on this. Anyway, I had a bad feeling Funky Sauce would lose again, but they had a strong showing against Callum & Cobb. Great brawl between Gabe & Sanada with Kenta & Chase. But considering Gabe is building towards that match with Kenny Omega, good win for him and Sanada, and then good promo from Gabe to call Omega out. This all probably takes Gabe & Sanada out of the running for the finals, because they can play up how Gabe is too distracted by wanting after Omega.

Great match from Shota & Honma VS ZSJ & Oiwa, but this match also proved me right from earlier. This was just a formality to make ZSJ VS Shota for the world title official. Shota gets the upset win on ZSJ and now that is Shota’s path to WrestleKingdom. But Bishamon VS LIJ was awesome stuff, and what a great win for Goto & Hashi. Goto & Hashi are definitely set up to make another run at the trophies, but I’m still not sure of their chances of winning. The threepeat was pretty surprising as it was, but a four-peat would be wild.

My Score: 9/10

Rampage returns and…

Lexy Nair welcomes us back, while also welcoming us to the official Full Gear Zero Hour weigh-in. Please welcome first, QT Marshall! The fans boo as QT makes his return to AEW TV, and he shows off the “DOOM” logo on his track jacket. QT steps into the ring and now Lexy welcomes out Big Justice and Big Boom AJ! The fans cheer as the Costco Guys are here, giving out high-fives and fist bumps! QT is already annoyed but Lexy says before we get started, do either of them have something to say? QT steps up to say yes, he does! Enough with the “Boom,” first off! Tomorrow night, QT brings the doom!

QT told AJ 20 years ago that he didn’t have it. 20 years later, AJ still doesn’t have it! The fans boo but AJ just shrugs that off. AJ tells QT that QT’s been waiting those 20 years to get AJ in the ring. But AJ’s been waiting ever since QT tossed those double chunk chocolate cookies! The fans cheer that! But AJ says hold on, hold on. He’s got a special surprise for us. He wants someone real special to be at Full Gear to ring the bell when AJ rings QT’s bell and he Power-Booms QT through this ring. PROGRAMMING NOTE for next week!

There will be no Friday Night Rampage next week, because it will be a BACK-TO-BACK Rampage & Collision Saturday night! Make sure your DVR is ready for three hours of AEW action!

Backstage interview with Thunder Rosa.

Lexy is with La Mera Mera and brings up how next week will be an ALL LUCHA Rampage. That must be exciting. Rosa is beyond excitement! It is about time they get some lucha libre to spice up Rampage. Atlantis Jr, Hechicero, and the return of Mystico! C’mon, now! Well what about Rosa? Yes, what about Rosa? Rosa hasn’t had a true lucha match in awhile, but why not? An open challenge for any luchadora or female wrestler that wants after La Mera Mera! In steps Harley Cameron, wearing a Hologram mask, and putting on a robot voice. “Greetings. I am famed luchadora, Harley-gram, the female counterpart to Hologram.”

Rosa is trying not to laugh as “Harley-gram” officially accepts the open challenge. Rosa tells Harley-gram that she looks familiar. Like a certain someone she beat two weeks ago. Does not compute with Harley-gram. Okay, fine. Compute this: Next week, Rosa will yank her cord and shut her down! OH SHUT UP! What? Uh… Danger! Danger, Will Robinson! Danger! “Harley-gram” runs off and Rosa asks if this is really happening. Rosa sighs, but will she just have to reboot Harley back to factory settings?

Ricochet speaks.

“I have had my eyes on the International title since I debuted in AEW. And Takeshita has cost me my chance at becoming International Champion on more than one occasion. I was the last person to pin the International Champion, and I plan on doing it one more time, at Full Gear. At Full Gear, Takeshita finds out what the world already knows: That Ricochet is not from here. Ricochet is outta this world!” The King of Flight is determined to dethrone The Alpha. Will Ricochet become The One & Only International Champion?

Anna Jay lost last week in her last chance championship match, but she also rejected the offer of The Vendetta. Now Deonna Purrazzo is looking to teach Anna why that was a mistake. Will The Virtuosa make sure Anna’s never The Star of the Show? Or will she learn why Anna’s still The Queenslayer? Then, we see Dante Martin, The Beast Mortos, Komander and Buddy Matthews compete in what will surely be a fast and furious Fatal 4 Way! Who wins some big momentum, and possibly a spot in the Continental Classic?

A great battle from these factions, but it is Strong Style that wins out! Will this happen again when Ishii goes 1v1 with The Learning Tree? Or will Chris Jericho make sure the Age of Nueve lasts forever and ever?

My Thoughts:

A great Rampage here for the go-home to Full Gear, but it was definitely just a go-home. They’re even ending with the November Rain music video from last Saturday as I type this. Good promo from Ricochet to hype up his match with Takeshita, but that’s still a toss-up to me. A part of me does want Ricochet to have the International Champion so Takeshita can enter the Continental Classic and go after Okada like he was supposed to do just a month ago. It really depends on what the Don Callis Family story is going to be with Ospreay and Fletcher, as The Don Callis Family isn’t losing everything at Full Gear.

Great opening tag of Mariah & Mina VS Nyla & Harley, though I really thought that was going to be the main event. But at the same time, of course Mariah & Mina won. No tease for anything at Full Gear so maybe they’ll wait to surprise us with Toni Storm or something tomorrow. Harley becoming “Harley-gram” just to get a rematch with Rosa was hilarious stuff, as does that “All Lucha Rampage” episode they’re hyping up. But oh look, next week is back-to-back Rampage and Collision on a Saturday just to try and undercut Survivor Series. It won’t matter, I’m still watching WarGames and leaving AEW for after, but it’s nice of them to do everything on one night.

Very good filler match of Juice VS Butcher, that was a strong return to singles action for Juice. Very nice Zero Hour matches but I kinda wish they’d given us a segment on TV to set up Deonna VS Anna rather than just announcing it. Maybe there was something social media had but I’m still not someone who follows all the socials. And that Fatal 4 Way is awesome, can’t wait to see who comes out of that a winner. Good promo overall from Big Boom AJ and QT Marshall, but I’m not sure it needed to be a weigh-in. A press conference style segment would’ve been fine, or even a contract signing, but I guess they just wanted to set up QT’s “lay off the cookies” joke. QT stands tall with his cutter taking down AJ, so you can bet AJ dooms QT in the Zero Hour.

Also great Six Man Tag main event, though I don’t think I’ve ever seen a main event without entrances. Great win for Conglomeration, though, but yeah, Ishii sure ain’t winning the ROH World Championship.

My Score: 8.8/10
