Bodeen’s Top 5 Moments: WWE NXT (5/4/21)
Bodeen looks over the last episode of NXT! What were his Top 5 moments?
After Monday Night RAW once again failed to deliver it was NXT’s job to lift the spirits of fans as the black and yellow brand produced yet another amazing episode as we saw Leon Ruff take on Isaiah Swerve Scott, Shotzi Blackheart and Ember Moon take on Indi Hartwell and Candice LeRae and much more. So let us get right into the action and look at the top 5 moments from yet another amazing edition of the black and yellow brand.
5. The Million Dollar Man, Ted Dibiase foils Cameron Grimes once again
Despite having a great start to NXT this week after he beat Asher Hale in a quick and easy fashion, Cameron Grimes would once again be embarrassed this week on NXT as Ted Dibiase once again outwitted Grimes in a great segment that was entertaining to watch and was another great showing for Grimes.
During his match, Grimes would dominate Hale in his match with Grimes hitting the Cave In to make short work of Hales. After the match, Grimes would celebrate his victory telling Ever-Rise he once going to celebrate by himself in the VIP room later in the night.
Unfortunately for Grimes, Grimes would not be allowed in. It would then be revealed then, Ted Dibiase was the reason for this for Dibiase telling Grimes “don’t rent the room when you can buy the whole place” as he once again foiled Grimes.
4. Finn Balor, Kyle O’Reilly, Pete Dunne and The WAY take on Karrion Kross
Halfway through the show, the NXT Champion, Karrion Kross would come out with Kross cutting a solid promo as he called out the NXT roster addressing anyone to step up. Kross would talk about his match against Austin Theory this week with Kross giving Theory a warning for next week. Before Kross could say anything more Kyle O’Reilly would come out and would call out the NXT Champion telling Kross that he wanted a match with him and believed Kross also wanted to face O’Reilly. O’Reilly would then be interrupted by Pete Dunne with Dunne calling out Kross and O’Reilly telling both men that he was the baddest man in NXT.
Finn Balor would then come out, making his return to the black and yellow brand after losing the NXT Championship to Karrion Kross a few weeks ago at NXT TakeOver: Stand and Deliver. Balor would talk about his history with both O’Reilly and Dunne and how he was coming after Kross. Balor would then attack Kross with Kross getting the upper hand. Kross would quickly take down Balor, O’Reilly and Dunne with Kross standing tall in the ring despite being attacked by Dunne, O’Reilly and Balor with security separating all four men from each other.
The chaos would then allow Austin Theory and Johnny Gargano to jump Kross from behind, despite Kross’s best attempts the numbers game would be too much for him as The Way took down the NXT Champion after Gargano hit Kross with the North American Title. This was a great segment that helped set up the landscape for the NXT Championship as well as set up next week’s match between Theory and Kross with the segment also making Kross look extremely strong after it took 5 men to take him down.
3. Leon Ruff takes on Isaiah Swerve Scott in a Falls Count anywhere match
Both Leon Ruff and Isaiah Swerve Scott would open NXT this week with both men having a falls count anywhere match after weeks and weeks of both men feuding with each other. Early in the match, Isaiah Swerve Scott would use his in-ring experience against Leon Ruff, with Scott hitting Ruff with a knee strike after Ruff tried to charge Scott right after the bell rung allowing Swerve to get a huge advantage early in the match against Ruff.
Despite Ruff getting brief moments of offence in against Scott, Scott would have the advantage throughout the match. However Ruff would push surprise Scott with a crucifix bomb from the top turnbuckle for a nearfall. Ruff would then continue to push Scott throughout the match, hitting him with a toolbox in the knee and a top rope frog splash for yet another nearfall late in the match.
Late in the match, Ruff would clothesline Scott over the barricade with Ruff then climbing on top of a stage as Scott tried to recover. Ruff would then jump off the stage only to be caught by AJ Francis who slammed in on top of the barricade. This would allow Scott to recover and hit the JML Driver on Ruff for the win in a exciting match that did a great job in opening NXT.
2. Shotzi Blackheart and Ember Moon take on Indi Hartwell and Candice LeRae in a street fight
After weeks and weeks of facing each other, Ember Moon and Shotzi Blackheart would take things to the extreme this week as both teams faced each other in a street fight for the NXT Women’s tag team Chamionship. All four women involved would waste no time in taking the fight to each other as they started brawling during the ring announcer’s introduction. With both teams also not wasting any time getting weapons as LeRae grabbed steel chairs from under the ring and Ember Moon grabbing trash cans soon after.
Both teams would push each other to the limit in an over-the-top main event with Shotzi Blackheart being the MVP of the match after she hit LeRae with a senton on a bridging ladder outside the ring. Blackheart wouldn’t be done there as she Hartwell with Barrett’s coffee mug sending her on the announce table. Shotzi would then climb then rigging and hit a splash on Hartwell through the announce table.
Late in the match, Hartwell would take out Ember Moon sending her through a table outside the ring. This would allow LeRae to hit the Wicked Stepsister on Shotzi Blackheart on a steel chair to pin the NXT Women’s Tag Team Champions in an amazing main event that once again showcased just how talented the NXT Women’s division is from top to bottom.
1. Timothy Thatcher and Tommaso Ciampa take on The Grizzled Young Veterans in tag team action
After the makeshift team of Tommaso Ciampa and Timothy Thatcher embarrassed The Grizzled Young Veterans last week by attacking both men with their shoes, The Grizzled Young Veterans would have a chance to get revenge of Thatcher and Ciampa this week as both teams faced against each other in a brutal hard-hitting match with both teams showcasing their talent as they exchanged brutal strikes in a fantastic match that was fun to watch from beginning to end.
Tommaso Ciampa and James Drake would be the two men to open the match for their teams with both men exchanging holds as they tried to get the early advantage. After some back and forth, Ciampa would tag in Thatcher, with Drake tagging in Gibson soon after with Thatcher and Ciampa getting the advantage after they clubbed their opponents with brutal strikes as the ad break started.
Late in the match, Drake would hit a suicide dive on Ciampa to send him over the announce table with Wade Barrett losing his shoe in the process. Ciampa and Thatcher would later use this to their advantage with Ciampa distracting the referee, allowing Thatcher to hit Gibson with Barrett’s shoe to pin Gibson and win in a great match that helped push Ciampa and Thatcher as a tag team threat.
These were my top 5 moments from another action-packed episode of NXT this week. What were your top 5 moments and what do you think of Tomasso Ciampa and Timothy Thatcher continuing to work together as a tag team? Let us know in the comments down below
