Andrew’s TNA Slammiversary Results & Match Ratings: 7.20.2024

TNA’s second biggest show is sold out in Montreal! PCO and Speedball Mike Bailey are mostly the home town boys. Will they get the wins?

Published

on

Well things came up on Thursday where I didn’t cover the show, and with the lame build to Slammiversary, I wasn’t really upset. Apparently the event is sold out though, and the largest live crowd in over a decade; so that’s nice. Countdown to Slammiversary had Faby Apache in a 4 Way that was won by the worst person in the match (Tasha Steelz), Kushida gone full Hakushi, came out in the kanji tattoos and even doing some classic Hakushi moves…so Jinsei Shinzaki would be proud. DeMALISH retained the Knockouts Tags and Hammerstone returned just to lose to Eric Young right at the end of the Countdown.

So yeah, the Countdown is a microcosm of TNA since firing Scott, a few cool things and a whole lot of questionable booking. Let’s see if this show makes sense and Joe Hendry leaves as new World Heavyweight Champion!

Matt Hardy vs JDC

JDC walks out with an American flag in hand and American Flag pants, since the show is in Montreal. Matt attacks JDC before the bell, so JDC uses the flag as a weapon and the referee tries to stop him, but since the match didn’t start yet, he can’t really do anything. In the ring, the match officially starts and JDC focuses on the ribs. Sending Matt chest first into the corners, draping him over the ropes, a few stomps to the midsection, and going for old classic heel psychology. Abdominal Stretch, a few pot shots, drapes Matt halfway onto the apron and JDC gets cocky. Goes for his Down and Dirty Leg Drop, but Matt moves. Finally getting in some offense, he pulls JDC into the ring, does the Delete Head Smashes into the buckles, Snap Suplex, Extreme Elbow from the corner! Looks for Twist of Fate, JDC pushes off and into the Side Effect for 2!

Twist again, but JDC rolls with it to counter, Twisting Falcon Arrow! Down and Dirty attempt 2, but Matt crotches him and does a Hanging Twist of Fate off the top turnbuckle! Matt Hardy wins!

Post-Match, he hits two more Twist of Fates on JDC to make a point.

World Tag Team Championship: The System (Brian Myers & Eddie Edwards) (c) vs The ABC (Ace Austin & Chris Bey)

ABC rocks and rolls early, some fun tandem MCMG style moves and then even a really nice Hart Attack! Myers manages to finally just muscle Bey into his corner and Eddie and Myers smash Bey a few times in the corner to take the wind out of the ABC sails. Alisha cheats a little, Myers and Eddie go to continue the punishment on Bey but he rolls under the move and hits the hot tag for Ace! Double Dumping out The System guys, Bey with a nice Tope con Hilo to wipe out The System. Lish distracts Ace long enough for Eddie to pick his ankle in mid high spot and his face bounces off the apron.

Ace tries to fight his corner, Myers Gator Roll to keep ABC sectioned off and hits his Raven pose before getting back on Ace. Eddie tags in and stays on Ace, Ace nearly gets out of things, but Eddie does a good job corralling him, tagging Myers back in, and Myers goes for the Chinlock to stall. Ace tries a rope run, Myers does his Baseball Slide trip, Assisted Catapult into the middle rope from The System, and it does look nasty. The referee stops Lish from interfering a second time, Eddie keeps slowing down Ace, and Ace tries to go for the rush of adrenaline tag, but Myers distracts the referee and the ref never sees the tag. So Eddie gets control, tags out to Myers and Myers goes for more submissions to wear down the more athletic Ace. Roster Cut attempt, but Ace back pedals, does his lay between the ropes corner dodge, connects on a Triangle kick and now they make simultaneous tags! Bey clears house, Moonsault, into Wrecking Ball Dropkick, Bey goes for another Tope, but Lish climbs the apron and just gets in the way.

Bey chases Lish, Eddie connects with a chop, Myers tries to keep going, but Bey stops him, Eddie goes to trip, Ace comes into play with the apron hand stand shenanigans and kick to Eddie, Myers wants an Apron Spear, but Ace sees it coming, Front Flips back into the ring and Bey connects with a gorgeous Cutter! Ace hits the Fosbury Flop on Eddie, and ABC is cookin with gas! Myers rolls back in, Bey hits the Splash, for 2. Tandem attacks from everyone, System tries the System Overload, but ABC breaks it apart, Spinning heel kick takes Eddie out of the picture, Magic Killer on Myers! They go for 1-2-SWEET but Myers moves and Bey collides with Alisha! In the chaos, Double Art of Finesse on the System members, 1-2-SWEET complete on Myers, and new champions The ABC!

Mike Santana vs Jake Something

The set up for this is awful. Two guys who lost during the qualifiers, look for a chance at “momentum’. So essentially, whoever loses this, is a dweeb who has the least reason to be near the main event. It’s like a 3rd place match in any single elimination tournament. Who wants to be the dork that loses twice?

A little World of Sport start, the ole Shoulder Tackle attempt from the smaller guy, so Jake starts to run him over to prove his power. Santana powders after being knocked out of the sky from a Thesz Press attempt and Jake Dives on him. Jake throws Santana back in, Santana connects on a Wrecking Ball Dropkick and follows that with an Escalara! Jake gets thrown back in, Santana tries to keep Jake down, but Jake finds different ways to fight back to his feet and Santana tries to keep the bigger man on the receiving end. Jake does manage to finally find a burst of power, shoves Santana into the corner and begins to stomp a mudhole in him. Snapping Suplex from Jake for 2, and the crowd seems to be in Santana’s corner. Jake goes for a few charges, but meets Santana’s feet, Up and Over, Enzuigiri, rope shenanigans into Rolling Buck Fifty for a 2 count! Goes back to the well for the Rolling Buck Fifty again, but Jake dodges, Jake tries to jump over him, but Santana catches him on his shoulders, Outline in Chalk! Dumb misstep where Santana posts up in the “wrong corner” so visibly runs across to the other corner for his John Woo Dropkick, into Cannonball. Cannonball attempt 2, but Jake catches him, Deadlifts him twice and finally punctuates with a Sitout Powerbomb. Jake goes to the top rope, but Santana cuts him off, Avalanche German and then they go into a weird Fighting Spirit spot.

Spin the Block ends things after Jake kicked out at 1 from the previous exchange. Too much dumb indie stuff and the corner swap looked beyond stupid.

The Rascalz (Zachary Wentz, Trey Miguel and Wes Lee) vs No Quarter Catch Crew (Charlie Dempsey, Tavion Heights & Myles Borne)

Smoke ’em if you got ’em.

Rascalz come out in full Buzz Lightyear gear. Myles starts off with Trey, mostly just Trey finding cute quick counters and dodging. Myles tags out to Charlie, Trey tags to Dez. Charlie and Dez go more World of Sport, and Charlie is on the losing end of a Wheelbarrow Body Scissors taunt, then a Spinning Head Scissors, tag to Wentz and Bronco Buster shenanigans! Tavion comes in and shakes off Wentz, Wentz tries to get cute but Tavion with the release Belly to Back, Pop-up Frankensteiner attempt from Wentz, but just caught and countered into a Gutwrech Side Suplex. Charlie gets tagged in, and works over Wentz. Another Gutwrench into a high Hammerlock. Charlie tries to take out The Rascalz, but they see it coming and drop, Charlie then goes after Wentz, but he uses his speed to get passed Charlie and tags in Trey.

Heights distracts the referee, Borne shoves Trey off the ropes into Charlie’s arms for a release Capture Suplex. Charlie connects on a Saito Backbreaker and then tags in Heights, who turns Trey inside out. Tavion is just throwing his power around, tags in Borne for an Assisted Backbreaker. Borne connects with a sick looking Snap Powerslam into the corner and Trey hits the ropes nasty. Tavion comes back in and throws haymakers. Tavion throws one Haymaker, but Trey Matrix Dodges and Tavion loses his balance, so Trey connects on an Eddy Gordo kick and tags in Dez. Dez does well, until he tries to call for Wentz and the numbers catch up to the currently wounded Rascalz. NQCC triple team Dez and he gets worked over hard. Dez tags in Trey and Wentz comes in too to clean house. Lightning Spiral attempt from Trey on Charlie, but Charlie counters with Dragon Suplex Hold, and Dez hits the Frog Splash to break the pin! NQCC powders, Wentz goes for the Diving Crossbody and they catch him, so Dez comes over for the Tope con Hilo and takes out the pile! Trey goes for an Asai Moonsault on Charlie but Charlie catches him into a Cravat Keylock, then there’s a submission spot where all the NQCC is in control, but the Rascalz eventually counter out and the bodies hit the floor.

Cheeky Nandos, High Post 619, Soup Kitchen, HOT FIRE FLAME! Our Rascalz win the match!

TNA Digital Media Championship & International Heavyweight Championship Match: AJ Francis (c) w/Rich Swann & Josh Bishop vs PCO

AJ and crew come out saying PCO won’t make it because they beat his ass, but it looks like Destro was lurking in the background. So just when they think they get a free pay day…a coffin, monks, Destro, doctors, and a body descends from the sky! Destro and the jumper cables return, and so DOES PCO! PCO even gets his own French entrance, probably from Handsome JF.

Since its a Montreal Street Fight, AJ attacks with a chair, but PCO absorbs the shots, punches the chair back in his face, Lariats him to the outside, Cannonball to the outside! PCO hits the Deanimator on AJ, and Rich runs over to try and help his buddy. PCO-sault to the outside and wipes out both Rich and AJ. Rich gets in the way, sets up two tables and they look to put PCO through the tables. PCO fights back, takes out both AJ and Rich. AJ makes some space, goes under the ring and tries to find more weapons. So AJ is beating the hell out of PCO with Chairs and Trash Cans, hits his goofy Tennessee Whiskey knee and when he finishes his move, his left leg clips one of the tables and it just looks silly. That would’ve been a hilarious ending to a potential tables match.

AJ is getting furstrated at PCO not staying down, tries to just throw him through the tables, but PCO fights back. PCO levels AJ with a few big shots, goes for the PCO-sault, but AJ puts him in the Electric Chair and drops him into the pile of chairs…only for 2! AJ goes to the top and PCO cuts him off and throws him through the two tables, and the tables explode. PCO needs to tie his shoe first, and Josh Bishop attacks PCO with multiple Chairshots. Sami Callihan shows up, Rich gets the best of him, goes to take out his face with a baseball bat, Rhyno hits the ring and Gores Rich. PCO slides AJ back in, PCO-sault, but AJ kicks out! PCO sets up chairs, AJ claws his eyes, hits a Tombstone with the Undertaker pose, but PCO kicks out. AJ Chokeslam countered by PCO Chokeslam into the chairs! PCO-sault again! PCO WINS!

Steph De Lander comes out dressed as Wednesday, and proposes to PCO! He literally says “Oui”.

TNA Knockouts Championship: Jordynne Grace (c) vs ASH by Elegance w/Personal Concierge

ASH goes for an early Roll-Up attempt, but Jordynne kicks out and they mostly feel each other out until Jordynne knocks her down with a Shoulder Tackle, Inside Out Side Slam, ASH tries to avoid in the corner, but Jordynne keeps on her, connects with a Spinebuster for a near fall. The concierge grabs Jordynne’s foot and the referee sees, but Rosemary was in the crowd again, and she comes out to run off the Concierge with a KNIFE! In all of the distraction, Jordynne gets tripped up in the ropes and planted on the outside. ASH tries a Piledriver or Powerbomb on the apron, but Jordynne won’t go, so ASH just hits a Neckbreaker over the top rope. Jordynne tries to fight off, goes for a Corner Leap Frog, but ASH doesn’t feed into it, Jordynne looks confused and ASH hits the Backstabber. ASH tries to turn it into a Sleeper but Jordynne eventually counters with the old Fall Down on the other person. Two labored Scoop Slams send ASH retreating to the corner, Spinning Backfist rocks ASH, Kanniku Buster for 2!

Jordynne catches ASH off the ropes, but ASH turns it into a Satellite DDT for 2! ASH goes for a Suplex, but Jordynne stops it, and then crotches ASH on the top followed by a big Bear Claw Palm Strike. Headbutts from Jordynne have ASH looking bad on top, Stalling Superplex float into Jackhammer…for 2! ASH tries to fight back, but Jordynne lifts her foot and Thesz Press on ASH’s back to just rain down strikes. Juggernaut Driver…NO STUNDOG MILLIONAIRE, into a Canadian Destroyer! Rarefied Air attempt, but Jordynne gets the knees up. Both try to set up things, but ASH hits the Flipping Neckbreaker. ASH goes to try Rarefied Air again, but Jordynne cuts her off. Jordynne tries to pull her face off, ASH bites Jordynne and hits the AVALANCHE SHIRANUI! But Jordynne manages to barely kick out. ASH gets frustrated and peppers some punches and a Senton onto Jordynne’s back and looks for a Half Crab but Jordynne fights out and snatches her real quick into a Rear Naked Choke, but ASH counters into a pin to break the submission. Strike exchange, Jordynne tries a Powerbomb but countered, Juggernaut Driver countered into a Small Package, Pop-Up Spinning Backfist from Jordynne. Kudome Valentine attempt but ASH counters and rolls through it, ASH goes for a kick, Jordynne holds wrist control and connects with the Juggernaut Driver to retain!

X Division Championship: Mustafa Ali (c) w/Campaign Singh vs Speedball Mike Bailey

Ali gets an early Headscissors counter and mockingly does the Crane Pose, and then Speedball kicks him in the damn chest. A little back and forth, Speedball with the Snapmare into a PK between the Shoulder Blades. Speedball let’s him get up, chases him to the corner and out with the Tornado Kick, Ali taunts the all his kicks missed, so Speedball toys with him from the extended Side Kick position. Campaign Singh gets on the apron to distract, so Ali takes advantage. The match becomes more back and forth, Bell Clap from Ali, evasive maneauvers from everyone  but a Wrecking Ball Headscissors into a Triangle Moonsault give Speedball the advantage and he goes to give his wife Veda Scott a kiss, then gets a little distracted with Campaign Singh and security so Mustafa connects with an opportunistic Tornado DDT.

Ali taunts a kiss towards Veda, Rolling Neckbreaker back inside gives Ali a near fall. Ali sinks in a Kneeling Bow and Arrow, the crowd tries to cheer on Speedball, and Speedball is getting a few potshots, but Ali has Speedball in a Gory Backbreaker that he transitions into a Gory Flatliner. Crowd hates Ali, Ali taunts and goes for a delayed 450, but misses, Speedball rushes and misses, Ali tries a Springboard return but Speedball’s educated feet even the playing field. Sole Butt, into Axe Kick, Round Kick to the Chest, Running Shooting Star misses, Ali goes for a Brainbuster but Speedball counters, Falcon Arrow, pops up top, SHOOTING STAR PRESS for 2. Ali powders to the apron, Speedball tries the Double Knees to the chest, but misses on the apron and eats a Thrust Kick to the face for his troubles. Ali goes to the top, Speedball cuts him off, Spanish Fly into Campaign Singh and the security!

Back and forth, Ali Dives, Speedball jumps over it and connects with the Asai Moonsault! Speedball tries Ultima Weapon but Ali catches him with a Rising Knee, Stuffed Dropkick into a Blue Tunder GTS for 2! Ali tries to end things, 450, MISSED! Speedball goes for Ultima Weapon but Ali kicks the ropes to stop him, Avalanche Poison Rana from Speedball! ULTIMA WEAPON!! BUT NOOO Ali’s foot was on the ropes! Speedball’s music even plays for a moment, he tries another cover, Ali kicks out and Crucifix counter for 2! Speedball with a Thrush Kick but Ali ducks and the referee eats the kick! Security and Campaign Singh get involved, belt shot, hold Speedball for the 450! Referee is still dead, another 450! The shove the referee into position and one of the riot gear security pulls out the referee! It was Trent Seven all along!

Seven takes out Campaign and the other security, Mustafa hits the Dive on Seven and takes a chair to the already damaged leg! Chairshot on Speedball and Ali calls to the back and summons, EARL HEBNER! Sharpshooter one Speedball, Hebner is conflicted on doing the right thing or Screw Job 2.0. Speedball Spin Kicks the chair out of Mustafa’s hands it legit clips Hebner and he takes a bump, SPEEDBALL WITH THE SHARPSHOOTER! Ali taps! Speedball wins!

TNA World Heavyweight Championship 6-Way Elimination Match: Moose (c) vs Josh Alexander vs Steve Maclin vs Frankie Kazarian vs Joe Hendry vs Nic Nemeth

Moose has the American National Anthem instrumental snippet before his entrance music. They really steered into the…OH MY GOD HE’S IN A COWBOY HAT! MOOSEQUENCES CREED!

Moose tried to strategize with Kaz, but Kaz bails and everyone beats on Moose until Kaz comes back in and they stop and gang up on Kaz. In typical multi-person fashion, lots of early fall down and pair off stuff. Hendry hits a Stalling Suplex on both Kaz and Moose, the babyfaces are cutting each other off but not taking shortcuts. Hendry Trust Falls Nemeth into Moose and Kaz goes for a Roll-Up, but only for 2! Kaz, Maclin and Josh are in, but Maclin and Josh team up on Kaz. Josh with the Backbreaker set up, Maclin shrugs and accepts the assist on the King Kong Knee Drop. Josh then hits German Suplexes on everyone, but hits 10 Count Locomotion Germans on Maclin in particular, the last on has the bridge, but only for 2! Kaz tries to take the opportunistic moment, but Josh counters, Kaz grabs Nemeth and Josh Double Suplexes the both of them. Before Josh and Hendry go at it, Moose hits a Bicycle Kick on Josh and tries to pick apart Nemeth. Headbutt from Nemeth, Neckbreaker, Dropkick on Josh, and then the 10 Count Elbows from Nemeth but Moose powders at 9, so Nemeth follows him out just to hit 10 on the outside.

Kaz goes after everyone, Slingshot Cutters for all, Moose tries to stop Kaz’s momentum, goes for his Escalara Crossbody but eats the Cutter for 2! Kaz tries the Chicken Wing on Hendry, goes to the corner for a Crossbody but Hendry just moves to the side Samoa Joe style. SCUDs for everyone from Maclin until Josh catches him, Maclin puts him in the Tree of Woe, Nemeth tries to stop Maclin, Tree of Woe Nemeth. CAUGHT IN CROSSHAIRS on Josh, tries for Nemeth but Nemeth dodges and Maclin flies through and hits Moose. Maclin back in, Busaiku Knee on Nemeth, Kaz in the Tree of Woe, Caught in the Crosshairs connects, KIA but intercepted with Lights Out from Moose! MACLIN ELIMINATED!

Moose is throttling everyone, Kaz tries an alliance, Moose feigns acceptance but hits an Uranage on Kaz instead of a handshake. Hendry fights out of the corner, but Moose hits the hard Irish Whips. Moose misses the Spear into the corner, STANDING OVA-NO! Jacknife Powerbomb causes Hendry to powder, Nemeth tries a Fame-Asser but Moose counters into a Buckle Bomb. Josh gets propped up, eats the Okada Dropkick into a Superplex, transitioned into a Jacknife Powerbomb for 2 after a small slip from Moose. Kaz Low Bridge on Moose, tries the Diving Frankensteiner, but it gets turned into an Apron Bomb. Moose eats the Superkick, Nemeth eats a Cutter from Hendry, Josh with his Low Crossbody Dive on Kaz. Everyone is fighting on the ramp.

A lot of brawling, teasing a move off the stage into a table, Nemeth is wobbling, Kaz gets Superkicked by Nemeth off the stage through that table! Moose drags the other three back to the ring, Josh tries to fight back, Uranage for Josh, Uranage for Nic into Josh. Joe rises up from the outside as Moose is distracted, hits a Cutter! Only a 2, Josh tries the C4 Spike, SACK OF SHIT into the Kip Up, catches Nemeth mid Crossbody, SACK OF SHIT into Kip Up! Moose is posted in the corner, Splash into SACK OF SHIT followed by the Kip Up! The crowd is reacting well to Joe but then Moose Kips Up, LIGHTS OUT on Josh and Nemeth but no pinfall! Moose eyes Hendry, Hendry counters the Spear into a Roll-Up, locomotion roll throughs Frakensteiner from Joe into a Lariat leveling Moose, STANDING OVATION on MOOSE! MOOSE ELIMINATED! Hendry goes for the Standing Ovation on Josh, but Josh with a LOW BLOW? C4 Spike! HENDRY ELIMINATED! Canadian crowd is raining down “bullshit” at Josh and booing hard.

The referee tells Josh to stop beating on Joe, he’s been eliminated, and Josh goes after the referee. Nemeth tries to save the referee but Josh kicks the bad knee, Power Breaker from Josh and Nic is reeling. Josh’s keeps pointing at himself saying he’s “the heart and soul, no one else deserves it more than him”. Josh blocks the Danger Zone and connects with a Rack Bomb. Danger Zone blocked, Double Legged Cradle but only 2. Backstabber from Kaz, Superkick from Nemeth into Danger Zone! KAZ ELIMINATED!

Overall Score: 6/10

Let me lead off with a few things, firstly, all the major titles are on babyfaces…that is awful. We all know that money is in the babyface chasing, not the heel chasing. So you give Josh a big heel turn with eliminating Hendry just to have him lose instead of being literally the most hated person in wrestling. I can only see this working IF there are plans to team him back up with Ethan Page but didn’t want both to be champion at the same time. The North/Monster Mafia as the main champs is a weird predicament, sure. But really, why even turn Josh that way, at that time? One could say that Hendry is so over right now, that he doesn’t need the belt…sure but; TNA isn’t over right now and could benefit from having him on top.

A bunch of matches were overbooked yet somewhat entertaining, like the PCO match or Ali match. Kushida randomly coming out with the Jinsei Shinzaki/Hakushi homage was cool, but would’ve been better if it got tied into the Octopus storyline. Having Faby Apache show up to remind people there’s a AAA agreement, just to have Tasha Steelz win, when she’s done literally nothing. I don’t get it. Gisele has been getting a little momentum, Xia had a few good showings and was relevant on TV, Tasha is irrelevant and Faby is a legend. The booking undermines some of the interesting beats.

ASH had a great match with Jordynne. Rascalz were match of the night. Jake Something is a fucking joke at this point. Matt Hardy vs JDC had no business on a main card, it didn’t start anything off hot, it was an undercard squash essentially. That should’ve been on Countdown and Hammerstone’s return should’ve kicked off the show. There was just a lot of mediocrity, marred by overbooking or questionable finishes. I really want to see how quickly some of these babyfaces drop their titles, because this is stupid business.

Andrew’s TNA iMPACT! Results & Match Ratings: 9.5.2024

Published

on

Nemeth retains after a well paced and fantastic Iron Man Match and Zachary Wentz is X Division Champion and riding high off his No Mercy win over Wes Lee. The System got rebooted at the expense of Joe Hendry’s team, and well, Hendry was 0-2 last week with the cheap shot causing Ethan Page to retain.

Some of the bigger questions after Emergence are:

What the hell are they gonna do with Joe Hendry?

What exactly does JBL want with his end of show appearance?

Are they finally burning the Knockouts Tag Belts with gasoline?

Let’s find out if we get any answers to those questions!

Ratings:

  • Kushida vs Laredo Kid: No Contest – N/A
  • Kushida vs Josh Alexander: Josh wins via C4 Spike – **
  • Open Challenge: Knockouts Championship: Jordynne Grace (c) vs Karmen Petrovic: Jordynne wins via Juggernaut Driver – ***
  • The Good Hands vs Zachary Wentz & Speedball Mike Bailey: Wentz wins via UFO Cutter – **
  • Eric Young vs Jake Something: EY wins via Piledriver – **
  • Moose & JDC vs Joe Hendry & Mike Santana: Moose wins via Lights Out – ***

Results:

The System opens the show with JDC and Masha in tow, Lish is in a decorative neck brace selling the injury with style. They’re getting very loud boos as Lish hits the “Do You Wanna Know Something”. Victory Road is apparently turning into an Always Sunny episode; ‘The Gang Remembers they have Rematch Clauses’. Moose references Wade Barrett as a “Britsh Lad” when he drops a Bad News line. He also tells JDC that if they win the tag match against Hendry and Santana then JDC is in, but if they lose, he’s out.

Lish does say that she’s under concussion protocol and could find a suitable replacement if she’s not cleared. Spitfire comes out, Dani Dumptruck is looking like the whole ass entrée that she is. Victory Road will be Spitfire versus DeMalish, but if Spitfire lose, they break up.

Kushida vs Laredo Kid

They both try to grab limbs but they counter wrestle and avoid in more of a Japanese Junior style. Kushida had Laredo Kid grounded with a Wristlock of sorts, but Laredo fights back to his feet, runs Kushida around, causes him to powder. Laredo looks for a Dive but slides in and cuts off Laredo sending him to the outside. Kushida goes for a Dive and Laredo hits the Mirror Move like a classic Pidgeot.

But before we can get any more Cruiserweight action, Josh Alexander hits the ring and starts leveling both men. C4 Spike for Laredo and Ankle Lock for Kushida. Security gets Josh to leave, Josh says its his house he does what he wants but Kushida grabs the mic and says “Ring bell ring bell, me and Josh, do it!”. I wrote it out, since he actually said it in English, so it shows he is practicing.

Josh ignores the demand and tries to walk away but Kushida collects him with a Dropkick and throws him into the ring as the bell rings.

Kushida vs Josh Alexander

Kushida lays into Josh with a few strikes but then we hit the commercial break.  Off the break Josh tries to Shoot on Kushi, but Kushi moves, wrestles for positioning and hits a German Suplex on Josh, stomps in Josh’s fingers and hunts for the Arm Bar. Josh manages to roll out and drag Kushida with him, break the hold and walk off a bit. Kushida follows, looks to keep on top of the arm, but Josh rams Kushida into the apron, and then uses his shirt to choke Kushida before the referee takes it away.

Josh throws a few Knife Edge Chops and Kushida walks forward trying to ignore the pain but gets dropped on the fourth chop, classic Backbreaker into a 2 count. Josh hooks in a Headlock, but Kushida fights back to his feet. Knee Lift from Josh, rope run, but Back Fist, Baseball Punch into Pele Kick…but Josh grabs the foot and looks for the Ankle Lock! Kushida counters out of it, gets Josh off balance and looks to aim for the Hoverboard Lock, but Josh fights through it and turns it into a Brainbuster. C4 Spike attempt, Kushida with Cradle counter for 2, Baseball Punch is blocked, Kushida gets thrown into the corner, Josh drives his knee into the focused ankle, Ankle Lock! But Kushida doesn’t tap, and Josh just decides to go for the C4 Spike.

Kushida’s pride caused this match after he was already dinged up, so Josh winning in a fairly dominating fashion isn’t crazy. But they quickly go to Kushida being helped back, Hendry is there since Kushida is in a bad way, so Hendry and Josh have a few words. I guess that’s where we go with Hendry for the interim.

Open Challenge: Knockouts Championship: Jordynne Grace (c) vs Karmen Petrovic

Arianna Grace comes out first, to say she’s the NXT liaison, which makes sense because she’s Santino’s shoot daughter. I don’t know a ton about Ninja Barbie, but I’m not mad.

Karmen starts with a few low Round Kicks, looks for a Sleeper, but Jordynne fights it off. Some back and forth, Back Elbow into Spinebuster from Jordynne for a 2. Jordynne works her into a corner, Karmen tries to fight out with a Back Kick, but Jordynne catches her, Electric Chairs her, but Karmen rolls through and looks for a Triangle Choke! Jordynne keeps Karmen in that position and stands up with her in Electric Chair, just to slam her back down and make a point. Karmen gets up and Jordynne trades the kicks for Scoop Slams, but Karmen slips a slam and Spinning Back Kick to the back of Jordynne’s head for 2. Jordynne is rocked but catches Karmen, World’s Strongest Slam into a Vader Bomb, but the Bomb is missed. Karmen hits the Down Kick into a Facebuster. A few more martial arts strikes from Karmen before Jordynne gets annoyed and pulls out a Gonso Style Powerbomb for 2.

They work to the corner, Karmen with a few High Snap Kicks, pulls her out with her heel, Spinning Heel Kick rocks Jordynne. A few low Axe Kicks, then some short Side Kicks but Jordynne connects with a Spinning Backfist and Polish Hammer drops the NXT wrestler. The fight up to the top rope, Karmen fights her off and Crossbody drops Jordynne, Karmen was setting up for what I can only assume it her finish, but Jordynne ducks it and Juggernaut Driver allows Jordynne to retain.

Lights go out and a pillow is in the ring next to Jordynne. Wendy Choo is marking her target?

Zachary Wentz comes out to just say how happy he is that he won, Speedball’s music hits and he walks out to congratulate Zach. Victory Road is rematch clause the Musical. Bailey does the babyface rematch before the Good Hands walk out to sour to environment and then Skyler distracts them on the mic while Hotch hits them from behind. Referee Paige runs out and says Santino is making another impromptu match.

The Good Hands vs Zachary Wentz & Speedball Mike Bailey

Santino doing good work with the random matchups, after the match is made official, Wentz and Speedball clock the Good Hands and send them to powder while they take off their shirts and pose before a tandem Dive. Good feelings don’t last super long since The Good Hands take enough shortcuts and go for classic tag team methodology to isolate Bailey early. Bailey connects with a few kicks and tries to get to his corner, but Skyler tags in and takes out Wentz. They go for some misdirection, Hotch looks for his Rolling Neckbreaker but misses, Bailey Back Body Drops Skyler onto Hotch and then Backflip Knees on the stack! Wentz gets tagged in and easily treat Skyler’s face like hackysack. Bailey lands a Golden Triangle Moonsault and handles Hotch on the outside, locomotion cradles on the inside, Skyler tries to hold the ropes but Bailey hits a Jumping Snap Kick to kick the hands away, UFO Cutter, and Wentz wins!

Steph De Lander walks out to get to the bottom of things with Cardona. Cardona starts off saying he owes her an apology, says sorry, but of course the rub is that he’s sorry he didn’t interfere earlier. Calls her an embarrassment. She says she’s not his property and he produces a piece of paper saying that, but in fact, he does own her. Runs down a bunch of ways he’s helped her and did everything for her and she owes him everything. She stands up for herself, but Cardona doubles down, gets in her face and goes full toxic parent or baseball coach. Steph looks about ready to cry as she’s backed in a corner, but PCO’s music hits and he comes out to do something, Cardona hides behind SDL and then runs away.

Eric Young vs Jake Something

Jake comes out and manhandles EY early on, big Body Drops, Lariats, Suplexes, Sitout Powerbomb, but EY kicks out. Jake is already annoyed and this is just his character having building frustration with all of his loses the last 4 months. Every time EY kicks out or moves, Jake gets pissed. He feeds EY into the corner, EY does the Flair Flip, Shoulder into the gut through the ropes, Five Hole Slide, and then a few Discus Forearms give EY some momentum. EY goes for the DVD, but Jake fights out, big Vader Hammers, Polish Hammer, Irish Whip but as Jake goes into the air for the Thesz Press, EY catches him and Death Valley Driver!

Only a two count, EY goes for the Macho Man Elbow, Jake cuts him off, looks for Into the Void but EY dodges and snaps off the Piledriver for the win! EY tries to bury the hatchet with a handshake, Jake shakes his hand and then after about two steps he gets pissed off and attacks EY. Into the Void! Jake looks to keep on him, but Maclin makes good on his respect and runs out for the save.

Moose & JDC vs Joe Hendry & Mike Santana

Hendry hits his intro and Santana decides to attack The System from behind as they’re distracted. Holding the ring early for Hendry and Santana, but then Josh walks down the ramp to take a seat next to his wife. See it’s totally legit.

Some early typical tag team pacing, but then the crowd favorite team goes for some quick tags, tandem offense, stereo 10 Count Punches Spot with the crowd counting along. This match has really been all Santana and Hendry, which bodes annoyingly for me, since as I said in my Emergence review, they aren’t the type of heel team that should be feeding for the 4 minutes of a match and then come back after dirty tactics. Speaking of which, JDC goes for the Eye Gouge then slaps on the Headlock and tags in Moose. Moose turns the energy up runs over Hendry a bit, but, then Hendry fires Sack of Shit into the Stalling Suplex.

Moose powders, Hendry looks to chase after him, but Lish steps in the way and it allows JDC to attack him from behind. Moose beats on him, tags back in JDC and Dango gets some solid offense in. Locks in a Guillotine Submission, Hendry looks to be fading but he powers up and Suplexes Dango, simultaneous tags! Moose and Santana square off, Santana with Chops light up Moose’s chest. Then Santana keeps up the offense and drives Moose’s face into the turnbuckles 3 times, Moose tries to turn the table on the fourth but Santana has all the fire. Clocks Moose, takes out JDC with a Draping DDT, lets Moose run him into a corner but dodges the buckles, Moose bounces out, hits the Rolling Buck Fifty! Hendry tries to fire the crowd but exchanges words with Josh Alexander. Josh hits the Low Blow on Hendry and rams him into the post. Santana with the Shot of Caffeine to connect with Josh! The System takes advantage of the extra help and distractions, JDC hangs up Santana in the ropes, Moose kicks him, lays him out, Lights Out! System wins and JDC is officially in The System.

Overall Score: 6.5/10

A few of the Emergence answers were answered and some new ones arose. Like is the Wendy Choo angle just a set up for Tuesday on NXT or will it be extended? Is Josh gonna just be playing gatekeeper for the main event? What would wrestling do if rematch clauses weren’t a trope?

You know simple questions.

But in all seriousness, since Victory Road is next week, its not like anything complicated can be set up. So rematches and simple blow off angles are definitely logical enough to get through the event before Bound for Glory build up.

Now that was sweet! Solo is still without that W, will he ever prove himself ready for more? Is Rocky about to add some sugar to these ROH title scenes?

Lady Frost speaks.

“I know I haven’t been here in ROH for a few months, but my last match? Too easy. I’m not saying that one match earns me a title shot, but a Proving Ground match? I’m willing to prove it. Red Velvet, it’s nothing personal, but you have something that I want: The Women’s World Television Championship. And I don’t know if you’ve been paying attention, but I’ve been busy traveling the world, winning tournaments, championships, all over the place. And tonight, I’m gonna prove why I deserve another one here in ROH. Trust me when I tell you, there will be no love lost, because I am Lady Frost.” Things are heating up, but will there be a cold snap here tonight?

Nick Comoroto w/ Jacoby Watts VS Lee Johnson!

The Freak Beast continues to be the fervent follower of HE, and HE is Jacoby. Will the self-aggrandizing teachings of Jacoby Watts somehow bring Comoroto success? Or can Big Shotty get a big win on his way back up the ranks?

The Code of Honor is upheld, the bell rings, and Watts suddenly needs to talk with Comoroto. Watts wants to see the fire in Comoroto’s eyes! Then Watts SLAPS Comoroto?! Comoroto gets that fire going, and he runs up at Lee! Lee dodges to CHOP, CHOP and CHOP! The fans fire up but Comoroto stops that to put Lee in the corner! Backstage interview with Anthony Henry & BEEF.

Paul Wight is with the Workhorseman and his very excited cousin, one of the hottest rising tag teams in ROH! Henry says they’re not an official team, but Beef loudly asks what he’s talking about. Of course they’re a tag team! And they’re undefeated! Henry says yes, and Beef did great, but reminds Beef that they’re only second cousins, and by marriage. Wight says either way, this new Workhorsemen formation is doing great. What does the future look like for them? Henry says he doesn’t know, but he knows it isn’t the Workhorsemen unless it’s with JD Drake. Henry heads out and Beef asks what he means by that.

Beef hurries after Henry, still wanting to talk it out. But will the Saint of Augusta only feel right once things are back to normal?

Anthony Henry & BEEF VS Jay Lucas & Terry Yaki!

Well, the second cousins by marriage may be on different pages, but maybe being in the ring will help. Will another big win help them get things cooking? Or will things just fall apart that much quicker?

The fans cheer for “BEEF! BEEF! BEEF!” The Code of Honor is upheld, but only by Beef, and the bell rings. The teams sort out, Henry tells Beef to focus, and let him start. Beef agrees, only to tag himself in! Beef is all fired up and the fans are with him as he starts against Lucas. They tie up, Lucas waistlocks but Beef TOSSES him away! Henry isn’t as excited as Beef is, but who is? So while they may not be the Workhorsemen, will this new combo still find their way to the top?

Spanish Announce Project VS The Iron Savages w/ Jacked Jameson!

Speaking of great combos, Angelico & Serpentico are feeling good now that they’re past grudges with Griff Garrison. But will they be bringing the good vibes to the ROH World Tag Team Championships? Or will they have to start sippin’ sauce and livin’ hoss to get past Bulk Bronson & Beefcake Boulder?

For that matter, Jacked Jameson has the mic to talk smack on the Texas bumpkins and Skinny Idiots. This crowd looks like they blow on their ice cream to cool it off. And also, that they should lay off the ice cream! Their opponents need to put it in a blender, chug it, and get their weight up so they can go from tights to trunks. But one thing you all have in common is that you’re Low T Losers! Meanwhile, these three are High T Winners, because they are taking everyone to #TiddyCity! The fans boo, but then SAP makes their entrance. The Code of Honor is upheld, and the teams sort out. Angelico starts against Bronson and the bell rings.

Boulder runs in, but Serpentico dodges to fire off hands and CHOPS!

Boulder just scowls, so Serpentico runs. Serpentico ducks ‘n’ dodges, but Boulder CLOBBERS him! Bronson says that’s a “flash flood!” Bronson tags in, then the Savages send Serpentico into the corner. Bronson falls, Boulder steps in, but Angelico LARIATS! Angelico DECKS Bronson, ELBOWS Boulder, but then Bronson catches Angelico. Angelico BOOTS Boulder, and he RAMS Bronson into buckles! The fans fire up as Angelico arm-drags Bronson down, then uses Bronson as a step for another FLYING LARIAT! The fans fire up more as Angelico JABS, bobs ‘n’ weaves, then fires off kicks on Bronson! Bronson staggers, Serpentico goes up to FLYING CROSSBODY! Angelico wraps those legs up, NAVARRO DEATH ROLL!! TRIALER HITCH!! Bronson taps, SAP wins!

Winners: Spanish Announce Project, by submission

Now that’s a huge win for SAP! Will the good vibes continue until Serpentico & Angelico are golden?

But Frost ducks to JUMP KICK! Frost CHOPS, DOUBLE CHOPS, and Velvet sits down! Frost swaggers, the fans cheer, and Frost handsprings to CANNONBALL! Cover, TWO! Velvet toughs it out but Frost keeps cool. Frost clamps onto Velvet with a chinlock and she grinds Velvet down.

The fans rally, Velvet fights, but Frost thrashes her around. Velvet stands, wrenches free, and ELBOW BREAKERS! And ELBOW BREAKERS again! Velvet reels Frost in, clamps on, COBRA TWIST! Frost endures, even as Velvet digs her elbow in! The fans rally, Frost powers up to HIP TOSS free! Velvet writhes, but Frost drags her around to victory roll, roll, and roll! Backstage interview with Taya Valkyrie.

Melissa Santos is with La Wera Loca, and brings up her attack last week on both Mina Shirakawa and Rachael Ellering. Tonight, Taya faces Mina 1v1, what is she thinking? Taya says her problem was never with Rachael, that was for fun. Her issue is with Mina. Taya has been here week after week, putting out hit after hit, and this girl just thinks she can show up, smile, shake her assets and then skip on back to Japan? Does she think this is summer camp? If Mina thinks this is a vacation, then Taya can make it as miserable for her as she wants. But then in steps Mina, with a shimmy and a shake.

Mina tells Taya that if she has something to say about Mina, just say it to her face. Taya steps up and says, “No.” Mina says #EverybodyWantsMina, but tonight, she promises Taya does NOT want her. Taya says she’s done with this conversation, and takes her leave. Mina asks if Melissa wants to dance, and then they both shimmy and shake. Is the Fighting Gravure Idol going to shake things up in the ROH Women’s Division? We’ll see, in tonight’s main event!

After Diamante VS Tiara James…

The Cuban Diamond winds with a Cuban Twist, but then she beats up on Tiara just because! Until Red Velvet rushes out there! Velvet storms into the ring, Diamante dodges her, but then bails out to the ramp. Diamante says Velvet is barging into her business but Velvet says this show IS her business! Velvet storms out after Diamante now, but the ref stops these two from going any further. Velvet holds up the belt, has she just found her first challenger?

Backstage interview with Lee Johnson.

Melissa brings up the brutal attack by Comoroto & Watts, but he ended up having someone make a surprise save. How does he feel now? Lee says it is a surprise that after picking up a win, he was attacked by two cowards. Though it seems he needed to look no further than a friend, a brother, and a Judge! EJ steps in, shakes hands with Lee, and introduces himself. He is The Judge, EJ Nduka, the most powerful, the most explosive, and the most aggressive athlete to ever be ten toes down in ROH. And tonight, his boy got jumped. EJ ain’t letting that happen anymore on his watch. Will #LeeJ make sure no crime goes unpunished?

Winner: Mina Shirakawa, by submission

The Rev-Pro Undisputed British Women’s Champion, The Queen of Southside Wrestling, and the rising star here in ROH & AEW, scores a big main event victory! Will this momentum make Mina the real main character?

My Thoughts:

A very good episode of ROH, but it was over two hours, and with quite a lot of filler when you look at it. All quality matches, even for the obvious outcomes, but I wish there were more matches moving story forward. Or more moments at least, like how Velvet showed up to stop Diamante from bullying Tiara James. Velvet got a great match out of Frost in a Proving Grounds, and yet it seems like an old rival is getting their shot first. Velvet VS Diamante will be really good, and certainly a solid defense for Velvet to build her reign. And while the story was meant to be Leyla Hirsch stepping up, she got really banged up at Death Before Dishonor, she probably needs to rest up first.

Abadon of course gets a win tonight, but no sign of Athena. I suppose this does fit story, as Athena is scared of Abadon. Good promo from Henry & Beef with Paul Wight as interviewer, and very fun match from Henry & Beef VS Lucas & Terry Yaki. I do appreciate the story of Henry not wanting to accept Beef as a tag partner, and I’m sure Beef will somehow win Henry over with continued wins in the ring, and then JD Drake returns to complicate things. I mostly don’t see this turning into a trio, Henry either chooses his old friend, or his second cousin by marriage.

Very good match from Lee with Comoroto, and good win for Lee with literally using Watts against Comoroto. But at the same time, of course they attack Lee back, and I like the move of EJ Nduka on Lee’s side. EJ’s been doing great in his squash match wins, and now this story will help bring out more of his skills. EJ Nduka is literally big, he will be big in ROH, and maybe Lee’s first title under AEW & ROH is the tag titles alongside The Judge. Really fun match from SAP VS Iron Savages, great win for SAP, and maybe they can start building towards the tag titles. The Kingdom hasn’t been on ROH in a minute, though, they’re too busy being Roddy’s sidekicks again. Maybe Taven & Bennett can show up in the episodes after All Out to get on a new story.

Good stuff from Shibata and Woods, but of course Shibata wins. Premier Athletes changed up their presentation, but it hasn’t changed a thing for them, not really sure what they’re to do to ever get going. And then a good promo from Taya and Mina to hype up their match, and then a great match for the main event. I figured Mina would win, she’s building herself up now that she’s going to be in AEW & ROH more. This can all build towards a story with Mariah May. With them both being champions right now, Mina could suggest a Two Woman Power Trip where they grab up as many titles as they can, but surely THE AEW Women’s World Championship will pit them against each other, and that will be a killer match.

My Score: 8.6/10
