Chairshot Classics: SummerSlam 2005
The RAW announce team introduce us to the final package of the night. It features The Heart Break Kid, Shawn Michaels and The Immortal Hulk Hogan. This is a match that wrestling fans have waited along time for, as it features the mega star of the 80’s facing of against a man of the same fame in the 90’s. The video shows HBK asking Hogan to come back for “One More Match” and be his tag team partner in a match versus Kurt Angle and Carlito. Hogan returns and wins the match by dropping the leg. After the match Hogan and Michaels celebrate with the tradition Hogan poses. This is when Shawn surprised everyone and hits Hogan with the Sweet Chin Music. This is what leads to Michaels cutting the famous promo that is basically a shoot on Hulk Hogan. This all builds to the Main Event that is about to go down, Hogan Vs. Michaels: For The First Time Ever!
The Heart Break Kid Shawn Michaels enters first and he is accompanied by one of the greatest theme songs annals in the business, Sexy Boy. Shawn stops and kneels on the ramp, as to say a prayer, and the pyro explodes before he hits the ring. He does the normal Shawn poses once in the ring and I was surprised he doesn’t get anymore pyro once he’s in there. The crowd starts the “Hogan” chants and it takes a moment before we hear the greatest theme in the history of the business, “Real American”. When Hulk Hogan enter the arena the crowd is going nuts and the roar becomes even louder as he begins to pose. Just when you think it can’t get any louder, a giant American Flag comes down behind the Hulkster and the top comes off the building. Hulk hits the ring and continues his traditional “I cant hear you” taunt. Great stuff here folks and it features arguably the two greatest theme songs in the business.
Before the bell sounds, Michaels rolls from the ring as if he doesn’t want to have the match. The crowd is going bonkers and Hogan is making gestures to imply he is breaking Michaels in half. After some time Michaels returns to the ring and the official sounds the bell. They circle around the ring a few times, and eventually enter into the collar and elbow. Hogan is quick to shove Shawn to the floor, and HBK is over-selling already. Lets get this out of the way now. This was supposed to be a best-of-three series, but Hogan changed his mind late. Hogan cited Shawn’s “unprofessional behavior” and the shoot promo HBK cut six days prior on RAW as the main reasons for this. This then made Shawn frustrated with Hogan and hence the over-selling of bumps. Now, back to the mat.
After a few more slow chops, Michaels leads Hogan to the opposite corner. When Shawn tries to smash Hogan’s face into the turnbuckle Hogan stops it by putting the foot up. This is where he really lays into Hulkster with a slap. When Hogan tries to punch him, Shawn ducks and pastes him with another slap. This apparently hurts Hulk and he is back in the corner getting beat with the knife-edge chops. Hulkster reverses another Irish whip to the corner that sends Michaels flipping onto the apron. He lands on his feet though and when Hogan approaches him, Shawn hits him with another slap. These definitely appear to be shoot slaps and have a nice, well, slap to them. Hogan decks him with a right though and this sends Michaels crashing to the floor. Hulk joins him out there this time and bangs Shawn’s head off the security wall. Hulkster slams Michaels onto the Spanish announce table and hits him with some hammering rights. Hogan does a quick slide into the ring to break the refs count and is quick to return his attention to Shawn. After Hogan whips Shawn into the ring post, he picks Michaels up as if he is going to snake-eyes him into it. Shawn escapes with the backslide and instead shoves Hogan into the pole. After another shove into the pole from Michaels, the dazed Hogan rolls back into the ring. And Shawn is right there behind him. Shawn puts Hogan in the corner and starts to hammer away the ten count. After only three he shoves Michaels to the mat but Shawn no sells it and is quick to start the ten count over. The shove away happens after four this time and Michaels splashes back onto Hogan this time. Shawn doesn’t bounce off and applies a side headlock, punching the head of Hulk the whole time. Hogan eventually goes to the ground but Shawn is still hammering away at his head. The ref has to pull Michaels off the Hulkster and when we are shown Hogan’s face again he is donning a nice crimson mask. For only taking some punches, the blood is really starting to flow. Maybe the Hulkster went a little deep with this blade job.
After a few more closed right fists from Shawn, Hogan soon finds himself in the grips of Michaels sleeperhold. Hogan starts to waver here and drops to a knee. Hogan’s face is leaking like a faucet now and all over the arm of Michaels. The ref checks the Hulkster’s arm for consciousness and before the ref can drop his hand for three we see the “I don’t think so” finger from him. This sends the crowd into a frenzy as Hogan starts to “Hulk-Up”. He escapes the sleeper with the suplex and this leaves both men shaking on the mat. Both men slowly make it to their feet and when Hogan reverses Shawn’s whip into the ropes it backfires. Shawn catches him with the flying forearm and when he nips up the crowd explodes for him. The Heart Break Kid takes to the top ropes and when he comes off for the elbow drop the Hulkster moves. Hogan is quick to his feet and is in true “Hulk-Up” mode now and so are the Hulkamaniacs. Hogan points the finger at Michaels and when Shawn throws a punch, the Hulkster counters it. Hogan hits his three punches and sends Shawn into the ropes. The fans all think the boot is coming, and so did I, but Shawn comes sailing back off the ropes and level Hogan and the ref with a forearm. The ref rolls from the ring as both men lay prone on the mat. Shawn again nips up and goes right back to the top turnbuckle. The fans start a “We want Bret” chant here so we see Michaels mouth “You want Bret?” and he comes back into the ring. He then does such a great thing and puts Hogan in the Sharpshooter. A ref re-enters the ring and when Hogan gets close to the rope Shawn drags him back to center. Hogan eventually drags himself back to it and the ref forces the break. Shawn tries to reapply it, but this time Hogan kicks him away. Of course Shawn collides with the new ref and knock this one out too. The Hulkster is now the first one to his feet and Shawn is kneeling in the center of the ring. When Hogan tries to pick Shawn up he gets nailed with a low blow. Shawn then leaves the ring and grabs a chair. He then delivers a chairshot to the top of Hogan’s skull. Shawn goes up top again, and this time when he comes off he drives the elbow into the chest of Hogan. Shawn Michaels then heads to the corner and is Tuning up the Band. Shawn lands that Sweet Chin Music and goes for the cover….
The Immortal Hulk Hogan tosses him off at the count of two and instantly starts to “Hulk-Up”. The crowd are in an absolute frenzy now and Shawn has a great look of disbelief on his face. The Hulkster absorbs three punches before he points the finger and lands three of his own. Hogan hits the big boot and this maybe the most oversold move in the history of the business. HE makes the crowd even louder with the “I cant hear you” before he drops the leg and gets the three count.
After the “Hogan Must Pose” session, Shawn Michaels re-enters the ring and shoves Hogan from behind. The two men stare each other down before Michaels offers up the handshake. The Hulkster takes it and this is a great moment is wrestling history. If it wasn’t for Shawn overselling the whole match and being a complete dick, we would of had a much better end product. That being said, the match was still great and if you care about this business you should watch this historic event. I have read that Shawn has since apologized for his actions in this match, and rightfully so. Match Time-21:24
This was another great SummerSlam and I enjoyed it pretty much top to bottom. The three must watch matches here in my eyes are; Hogan/Michaels, Mysterio/Guerrero and Taker/Orton. But you cant go wrong if you just watch the whole card. As I always do at the end of these, lets see what Dave Meltzer thought of the card. These star ratings are acquired from www.profightdb.com. Dave has the Jericho/Cena match as the highest rated at 3.75 stars. Mysterio/Guerrero and Hogan/Michaels aren’t to far behind with 3.5. The lowest rated match was the opener with a quarter star. Well that does it for this edition of the Chairshot Classic and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.
As always head over to Twitter and give me(@james_callear) and The Chairshot a follow. A lot of hard work goes into this content so share it amongst your friends and help us out. If you are into Profession Wrestling and don’t follow them, you are just plain doing something wrong

Chris King Looks Back: Edge vs Randy Orton in the “Greatest Wrestling Match Ever”
Chris King takes a look at the memorable WWE Backlash 2020 “Greatest Wrestling Match Ever” featuring Edge and Randy Orton!
Chris King takes a look at the memorable WWE Backlash 2020 “Greatest Wrestling Match Ever” featuring Edge and Randy Orton!
Edge made his shocking return at the 2020 Royal Rumble and immediately reunited with his former Rated-RKO member Randy Orton. It all seemed like old times as both superstars shared respect with each other. The following night on Monday Night Raw after Orton proclaimed he wanted to get Rated-RKO back together, he hit a vicious RKO and CON-CHAIR-TO on Edge.
‘The Viper’ was in his mind trying to protect his former partner after being out of the business for nine years but, Edge wanted to write his own storybook ending to his career. After Orton took out Edge’s wife Beth Phoenix, both men went to war in a Last Man Standing match at WrestleMania,,, in which Edge was victorious. This did not sit well with The Viper, who had gone back to his sick and sadistic ways. In order to prove who the better wrestler is, WWE announced they would compete in the Greatest Wrestling Match Ever at Backlash.
The production for this match was legendary as both superstars were introduced by Howard Finkel via a Madison Square Garden-esque microphone, which made it feel like a big deal. Even the referee, Charles Robinson, was dressed up with a blue collared dress shirt and bow tie. The iconic match started with Edge attempting trying to outwrestle his opponent, but The Viper outsmarted him at every turn. Edge delivered a kick to Orton on the outside to gain some advantage. ‘The Master Manipulator’ utilized Orton’s weakened shoulder to keep him locked in a headlock, slowing down his opponent’s attack.
Orton tried to hit a superplex on the outside, but Edge hit a flying clothesline, and The Viper started to bleed. It’s been all Edge so far in this match as he locked in a crossface on his friend-turned-rival. Orton turned things around with a nasty modified neckbreaker that sent Edge gasping for air. The Viper kept the punishment going as he slung his opponent into the pixie glass, barricade, announce table, and even the steel steps neck first. The Viper slowed everything down with a stiff sleeper hold, keeping Edge on the mat.
In the third quarter both superstars started pulling out tricks, including the late great Eddie Guerrero’s Three Amigos suplexes. While the assault continued, Orton hit a massive Superplex off the top rope for a solid two-count. The Viper tried to take advantage of his rival’s neck with a super-draping DDT, but Edge countered with an Edge-E-Cution for another two count. After a modified chokehold, Orton hit an Angle Slam to give him some reprieve.
The Viper dumped Edge to the outside and was able to capitalize with his patented draping DDT. The Master Manipulator hit Edge-O-Matic for a near fall. Edge wanted a spear but instead managed to hit Christian, his long-time tag team partner’s, signature move, the Unprettier, for a two count. The Viper bounced back and hit a Pedigree, paying homage to Orton’s former Evolution leader HHH. Edge then hit a Rock Bottom! After several unique pinfall attempts by Edge, The Viper struck with an RKO for a 2.99 count.
The finishing minutes of this classic match saw Orton going for a punt kick, and Edge hit two devastating spears for a solid two count! He went up for a flying attack, and Orton caught his rival into an RKO for yet another near fall. Edge locked in the Anti-Venom submission, but The Viper hit a low blow followed by a vicious Punt for the three-count!
Was this the greatest wrestling match ever… No, not really. This was a solid match, though, as both superstars tried to utilize everything in their playbooks and even some homages to the greats of WWE. I think at this point of COVID, WWE was trying to use any taglines or unique creativity to produce great wrestling content. Edge unfortunately suffered a torn triceps injury that would keep him out of the ring until the 2021 Royal Rumble. The Viper would go on to become WWE Champion once again later that year!

24 Years Of The Viper: Randy Orton Hits 24 Years In WWE
Chris King takes a look back at some of the most iconic feuds of Randy Orton and his 24 years in WWE.
Chris King takes a look back at some of the most iconic feuds of Randy Orton and his 24 years in WWE.
Twenty-four years ago, Randy Orton made his debut on the April 25th episode of Friday Night SmackDown against the veteran Hardcore Holly. ‘The Viper’ has had a decorated career in WWE: grand slam champion, a fourteen-time world champion, two-time Royal Rumble winner, former Money in the Bank, and multi-time tag team champion. Here are some of Orton’s most iconic feuds in WWE.
Randy Orton vs. Mick Foley
The ‘Legend Killer’ was so disrespectful to Mick Foley by verbally abusing him and spitting at him. Foley retired in 2093 but made his shocking return at the 2004 Royal Rumble, eliminating Orton. The two superstars would begin a heated rivalry at WrestleMania XX, where Evolution (Randy Orton, Batista, and Ric Flair) would face off in a six-man tag team match against The Rock and Mick Foley. Orton’s victory would continue his ascension through the WWE, but it also continued his feud with Foley. Foley would take Orton to hell with him at the 2004 Backlash PLE.
Both superstars would have a No Holds Barred Falls Count Anywhere match, which Orton himself considers one of his favorite matches of his career.
The legend helped solidify Orton as a top heel in the company, where people had some misconceptions that a pretty boy couldn’t get hardcore and messy against the hardcore legend. Without their iconic feud, perhaps Orton’s greatest achievement may not have happened.
Randy Orton vs. Triple H
Evolution’s leader Triple H had been telling Orton that he was the diamond in the group. Orton was so appreciative of his mentor’s support as he challenged Chris Benoit at the 2004 SummerSlam PLE. Orton would shock the world by becoming the youngest world champion in WWE history. The very next night after a successful defense, Evolution came out to celebrate with him. With Orton on Batista’s shoulders, his world turned upside down with the iconic “thumbs down” moment. HHH went from friend to rival in seconds, bloodying up his protege out of pure jealousy and rage. The two would have a mini feud where HHH would take the world title away from Orton.
The rivalry was restarted after ‘The Viper’ hit Vince McMahon (HHH’s father-in-law) with a vicious punt kick after he was about to fire him. Orton, along with his two Legacy stablemates Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase Jr., made it his life’s mission to destroy the McMahons, including
Shane McMahon and HHH’s wife Stephanie McMahon. The Viper blamed IED for his actions, but in reality it was Orton getting his ultimate revenge against his former mentor when he was viciously kicked out of Evolution.
Randy Orton vs. The Undertaker
In 2005, The Legend Killer was looking to do the impossible when he challenged The Undertaker to a match at WrestleMania 21. Orton was young and arrogant and was trying to do everything to break his rival’s undefeated streak at WrestleMania, but The Phenom got the job done. During the match, Orton’s father Bob Orton Jr. tried to help his son win. At SummerSlam, Orton and Undertaker would do battle again; this time, Orton’s dad would be disguised as a fan, and The Legend Killer would get the victory.
At No Mercy, both Ortons would face Undertaker in a casket match. Orton won the contest, and as his rival lay in the casket, they lit it on fire.
A few months later, The Deadman would make his shocking return at the 2005 Survivor Series PLE after Orton was named the sole survivor for his team. Taker rising through the fire and kicking the casket open was one of the coolest moments in WWE history. Orton thought he had the last laugh, but in true Taker fashion, he challenged him to a Hell in the Cell match. Orton with nowhere to hide inside the demonic structure, as The Phenom finally got his revenge.
Randy Orton vs. John Cena
This rivalry was the next generation’s Stone Cold vs. The Rock because it spans throughout the years. Orton vs. Cena was simply both GOATs trying to prove who was at the very top in the company. This storied rivalry began in 2007, when Cena was the WWE Champion and Orton was challenging him at SummerSlam. Cena would retain it, and The Viper struck back, delivering a vicious punt kick to Cena’s father, who was at ringside. They would feud for a few months until Cena got injured and needed surgery.
All throughout 2008, both rivals would go their separate ways until the following year. After Orton’s vengeance was successful at the 2009 Backlash with winning the WWE Championship, his and Cena’s rivalry was restarted. They competed in a series of matches throughout the summer. Their iconic I Quit Match, a 60-minute Ironman Match, will go down in history as one of the greatest of all time. Cena would finally get his comeuppance inside Hell in the Cell by winning the WWE Championship. This would put a pause on their rivalry.
Both superstars would find their way back to each other in 2014, when Orton won the WWE Championship after cashing in his MITB briefcase on Daniel Bryan. The Viper was the focal point of The Authority (Triple H, Randy Orton, and Stephanie McMahon), and Cena once again was the thorn in his side. Cena had won the World Heavyweight Championship, and this was building to a huge title unification ladder match. Both superstars would utilize everything in their arsenal, but Orton handcuffed his rival’s hand to the ring ropes. Cena went crashing through the table, and The Viper claimed both titles.
In 2025, Cena would do the unthinkable and turn heel, which shocked the world. Mr. ‘Never Give Up’ actually gave up on his fans and verbally attacked everyone for wanting to be like him. While the self-proclaimed GOAT was gloating about defeating Cody Rhodes to become a seventeen-time WWE champion, an old rival snuck up behind him and gave him an RKO! The two longtime rivals would face off one final time at Backlash inside Orton’s hometown. Their match wasn’t incredible because Cena was still trying to find his footing as a top heel. Cena would retain the title, and sadly, this is how one of the greatest rivalries in WWE history ended.
