Cook: WWE’s Champions Need To Win Occasionally
Is the champion losing non-title matches, yet prevailing in the money match, played out? Steve Cook lays out some talking points to consider!
Is the champion losing non-title matches, yet prevailing in the money match, played out? Steve Cook lays out some talking points to consider!
When I’m not writing things for websites, I’m typically hanging out on a message board. How 2005 of me, right? Well, offtheteam.com has a number of my old running buddies from back in the days when wrestling websites had message boards instead of comment sections & social media wasn’t a thing yet. It was a sim-no, no it wasn’t really a simpler time, things were complex as hell back then too. But OTT’s a pretty solid place for good rasslin’ convo.
When you know each other & have talked the pro wrestling for as long as we have, certain talking points get repeated over & over again. One of our posters, who is one of several people with either “Mike” or “Ray” as part of his name but is the only one with both, has become synonymous with the idea that champions should never lose non-title matches. WWE has had a tendency over the years to job their champions out in such matches all the time, and it drives this fella bezerk.
As it should.
It’s a lazy trope that WWE trots out all the time. If you watched Raw on Monday night like I did, you probably noticed a bit of a trend when it came to how folks with championship belts were featured. Let’s take a look…
-Intercontinental Champion Bobby Lashley teamed with Jinder Mahal in a losing effort against Finn Balor and…well…nobody actually. Just Finn Balor. This isn’t even the first time Lashley has been on the losing end of a match where he had a partner & Balor didn’t.
-Raw Tag Team Champions, The Revival, lost to Aleister Black & Ricochet for the second time in the last month. They hold one victory over Black & Ricochet, albeit by disqualification.
-United States Champion Samoa Joe made a rare visit to Raw in order to take part in Kurt Angle’s farewell tour. Of course, Joe ended up with his shoulders down while trying to choke out Angle and lost the match.
-Women’s Tag Team Champion Sasha Banks was lucky to emerge with a win by disqualification because Nia Jax & Tamina attacked her before they could get to Natalya. Women’s Champion Ronda Rousey won her match with Sarah Logan, but she lost the Beat the Clock challenge since it took her longer to do that than it did for Becky Lynch to finish off Liv Morgan.
It’s a darn good thing nobody was defending their titles on Monday night!
Don’t get me wrong, I understand the logic behind a champion losing a non-title match. I understand the idea of a champion losing a match that ensures a future title opportunity. Challengers need to be built up. What better way to make somebody look like they could be a champion than having them beat the current champion?
Well, in an ideal world, there would be plenty of contenders with enough credibility that an up & coming challenger could beat them and work their way into a title shot. Black & Ricochet could beat other tag teams before stepping into the ring with the Revival, instead of beating the Revival over and over again in non-title matches.
In an ideal world, the Intercontinental Champion wouldn’t constantly be booked in handicap matches where his challenger is out-numbered. He damn sure wouldn’t be losing those handicap matches, even if he’s saddled with incompetents like Lio Rush & Jinder Mahal.
I can somewhat excuse Joe losing to Angle since it’s part of Angle’s farewell tour & such. Still, had they bothered to plan out the idea of a Kurt Angle farewell tour before a couple of weeks ago, Joe could have wrestled Angle one last time before winning the United States Championship. Hell, why wouldn’t Angle demand that the title be on the line? After all, it doesn’t get more “United States” than Kurt Angle. He only held that championship one time, for 21 days during the weird Invasion period where WWF & WCW championships changed hands more often than wrestlers changed their jockstraps.
Confusing times.
I don’t mind a champion occasionally taking an L to a challenger. I remember the buildup to WrestleMania IX, where Tatanka defeated Shawn Michaels in a non-title match on WWF television. Then it was part of the build for the match. Could Tatanka make lightning strike twice? It worked because they didn’t have every single champion losing on television every week like they do now.
Hell, can anybody blame Brock Lesnar for not showing up more often? They’d have had Seth Rollins pin him a few times by now. The only way a WWE champion can be protected in 2019 is if they work part-time or have a UFC championship on their resume.
I’m sure some out there will say that this isn’t an issue at all. Some will say that the whole idea of championships is outdated anyway. We all know wrestling is fake, right? We all know the championships aren’t awarded legitimately. What does it matter if the champions lose all the time?
It’s not so much about the belts losing their viability. The champions make the championships. Samoa Joe losing to Kurt Angle one time doesn’t hurt him. Joe’s still a fearsome individual that can cut a heck of a promo, so the US Championship means more over his shoulder than it did when R-Truth was hanging around with it off of television.
That Revival, tho.
But when you’re The Revival, whose whole character is based around being the best in-ring tag team in the business & lack that fear factor that a man like Joe possesses, you might want to win a match once in awhile. When they lose all the time, their losses lose all meaning. It’s more surprising at this point when Dash Wilder & Scott Dawson actually win a match.
This is so easy to fix. Have contenders beat other contenders. Let the champions beat some scrubs every once in awhile. Lord knows there are enough of them on the roster these days. I’m not going as far as Michael Raymond and saying that champions should never lose non-title matches, but it matters a lot more when it happens a couple of times a year instead of a couple of times a night.
Championships are supposed to be rewards, not death sentences.

Chris King: The Wyatt Sicks’ Wasted Potential By WWE
Chris King takes a look at the WWE and their wasted potential of Uncle Howdy and the Wyatt Sicks faction.
Chris King takes a look at the WWE and their wasted potential of Uncle Howdy and the Wyatt Sicks faction.
It’s that time of the year again, folks; it’s unfortunate and downright awful that so many WWE superstars got released today. I’m not going to list all of them, but I am going to talk about one of my favorite factions,
The Wyatt Sicks. Nikki Cross, Joe Gacy, Erik Rowan, and Bo Dallas (Uncle Howdy) were something special. After Bo’s brother Bray Wyatt’s tragic passing, WWE felt like there was a hole that needed to be filled. Wyatt was one of the most creative and brilliant characters, and Bo would be taking over his brother’s concept and bringing it to life. In 2024, at the end of an incredible documentary highlighting Wyatt’s career and struggles, Bo appeared on the screen portrayed as Uncle Howdy. The last time Uncle Howdy was seen on-screen was at the 2023 Royal Rumble, where Wyatt defeated LA Knight in a Pitch Black Match. Howdy jumped off a structure onto Knight.
This post-credit scene sparked so much speculation and excitement that Wyatt’s brother would carry on his legacy and possibly debut the faction that was Wyatt’s concept. On the June 17th episode of Monday Night Raw, The Wyatt Sicks made their dramatic debut ,destroying the backstage area as well as “murdering” Chad Gable. It was such an iconic arrival for Howdy as he made his menacing walk from the back into the audience who were chanting “Holy Shit.” The Sicks and American Made (Chad Gable and The Creed Brothers) battled for months, with The Sicks being victorious. On the September 9th episode of Raw, The Sicks defeated them, with Howdy getting the win with Sister Abigail.
The following year, The Sicks would move over to Friday Night SmackDown, and it seemed like WWE had a plan in place. They would win the tag team championships from The Street Profits and start to look dominant. Now, what should have happened next is Howdy should have won the United States title. The Sicks could have held all the gold over on the blue brand, but it never happened. The Sicks entered into a never-ending feud with The MFT’s (Solo Sikoa, Tama Tonga, Tonga Loa, JC Mateo, and Talla Tonga.) It started off exciting, and the WWE Universe was red-hot for their interactions.
After months of repetitive matches and The MFT’s stealing their lantern, the feud grew tiresome and boring. Even Tama asked Solo why they are still holding onto the lantern, as it was destroying them as a whole. Finally on the SmackDown before Mania, Tama
gave the lantern back to Howdy against Solo’s wishes. Please explain to me why both factions fought almost every single week instead of just having one final blowoff match at WrestleMania.
It should have been either a massive street fight or a falls count anywhere match on the grandest stage of them all. Instead, it turned into a meaningless week-after-week extravaganza that benefited no one. The MFTs won the rivalry, and The Sicks don’t even work for WWE anymore. This was the same criminalized creative process that Wyatt dealt with during his first run in the company.
We’ll never know how much of a dangerous force The Wyatt Sicks could have been in the WWE. For all their careers’ sake, I hope they stay far away from the company for as long as possible. Every superstar that was cut deserves better!

Chris King: Bloodline Saga: Is This the Right Call For WWE?
Chris King questions the WWE’s logic in setting up Jacob Fatu as the next challenger for World Heavyweight Champion Roman Reigns
Chris King questions the WWE’s logic in setting up Jacob Fatu as the next challenger for World Heavyweight Champion Roman Reigns
Roman Reigns is once again World Heavyweight Champion after his dominant win over CM Punk at WrestleMania 42. On the following night on Monday Night Raw, The OG Bloodline came back together as a well-oiled machine as The Usos stood side by side with Roman. With the WWE Universe asking who would be the first to challenge “The Tribal Chief,” Jacob Fatu shocked the world by answering the call.
Fatu is running hot after his impressive win over Drew McIntyre and feels like he is ready to become the new world champion. This bloodline segment ended Raw, and it picked right back up on SmackDown with even Solo Sikoa and the MFTs involved. This is now two shows that have been centered around The Bloodline saga, and it’s made me question whether or not WWE should be retelling this story.
The Bloodline (Roman Reigns, The Usos, and Solo Sikoa) ran WWE for over four years as Reigns’ henchmen, doing his dirty work to retain his title. Even though Roman has declared he doesn’t want Jey and Jimmy to serve him, it sure seems like WWE are spinning their wheels. Fatu could add a whole new chapter into the story, even if he’s not able to beat Roman at Backlash. “The Samoan Werewolf” could be forced to do the same thing as Jey did all those years ago and fall in line.
In my opinion, I feel like Fatu should be challenging for the Undisputed WWE Championship because that’s a title I feel like he should win. I understand standing up to your blood and trying to prove you’re the best, but I don’t think this is the right move. It feels like 2022 all over again, as The Bloodline is the central focus on both shows. If Fatu doesn’t win, what happens to all his momentum he’s been building over the last two years?
Why did WWE make this the best choice for storyline purposes? Why couldn’t creative have come up with a different challenger for Roman? There are so many other superstars that could challenge The Tribal Chief, such as Rusev, Bron Breakker, Gunther, or even a returning Sheamus.
I just can’t help but question WWE’s logic here, and it kind of reminds me of all the times The Shield reunited. Could WWE be pushing the same storyline too many times here? Could the WWE Universe get tired of this rinse and repeat cycle of The Bloodline Saga?
Are we about to see all the weekly episodes solely focused on The Bloodline again? Will it be cinema… Yes. Is there still money in The Bloodline… Yes. Was it the right call? That’s to be determined!
