Steve Cook’s Fave Five: November 2020

Cook explores some of the major players that have him looking forward to November!

Published

on

It’s a new month! You know what that means, right? It’s your monthly dose of positivity from a man that’s been accused of being negative more times than he can count. Most of those times were by people I haven’t seen in years. I would love to roll up on those people here in 2020 and be all like “YOU SEE WHY I’M SO NEGATIVE?”.

True genius is never appreciated in its own time.

I am doing my best to rectify that with this column. Appreciating true pro wrestling genius in its own time. Booker T gets a reference here because he popularized the Fave Five back in the day, and we’re keeping it going now. Here are my five favorites at the moment I’m writing this!

5. Matt Sydal

It’s always nice to see an old friend, isn’t it? Matt was quite the talented kid, you could tell when he was working his way up through the indies and then Ring of Honor that he was in store for big things. At the time, the idea of somebody his size not named Rey Mysterio making it big in WWE seemed like a bit of a stretch. Evan Bourne didn’t have an awful run though! It could have been better, but it could have been a lot worse. He got over pretty well as a spunky underdog and had a successful tag team with Kofi Kingston. I was skeptical of the Air Boom name, but it worked!

I know that Matt Sydal worked some other places after leaving WWE. Unfortunately, I wasn’t watching a whole lot of Impact Wrestling when he was there, or Ring of Honor when he was there, or even New Japan when he was there. Sydal had knee surgery towards the end of 2018, and was out for most of 2019. His Impact contract expired, and he was a free agent. He’s kept that status & worked various places, recently appearing on both ROH & AEW television. It was fun to see him wrestle Delirious again in the Pure Tournament, and although he had quite the botch in his AEW debut, they did some ret-con work to pin that on Michael Nakazawa putting baby oil on the ropes.

We don’t know for sure where Matt Sydal is going, and that’s a large part of the fun.

4. Tracy Williams

I had heard good things about the man known as “Hot Sauce”, but I was waiting to see them. His spotlight episode of ROH TV didn’t do much to win me over. Not entirely his fault, unless he told them to put that Bully Ray match on there.

His performance in the Pure Wrestling Tournament won me over. After a good showing in the first round, he & Fred Yehi tore the house down in Round 2. Spectacular match. Another good showing and a win over Jay Lethal later, and Williams went to the finals. He would lose to Jonathan Gresham, but people had to be impressed with his matches in the tournament. I know I was!

A Ring of Honor with Tracy Williams as part of its foundation has a chance to succeed.

3. Shotzi Blackheart

I wrote about Shotzi and how she should book NXT fairly recently, so I don’t want to belabor any points I made there. It’s pretty obvious that I wasn’t alone in noting Shotzi’s brilliance at Halloween Havoc. Everybody’s jumping aboard the Blackheart Bandwagon, and nobody can blame them for that. She’s become a star with the NXT fanbase, and it’s not going to end at Halloween Havoc. See, William Regal also appreciated Shotzi’s performance as Havoc host, and he offered her a match with anybody of her choosing.

Her choice?

Could we have asked for anything better to get people back in a good mood after all of this election divisiveness & hullabaloo? Surely we can all agree on enjoying Shotzi vs. Toni. Back in the day I would have been torn over who to root for. Now, I just enjoy two badass chicks going at it. Gonna be good!

2. WALTER

It’s easy to forget about WALTER. He works the NXT UK circuit, which was inactive until recently. The group is also full of sex perverts, and not the fun sex perverts like we see in the Dark Order. The type that are creepy and have no redeeming value, even for the sake of sports entertainment. It’s easy to ignore the show and to hope that WWE quits putting these types of folks on their Network.

However, there is one man that occasionally makes it worth a watch. The Ring General. There are few things more emotionally satisfying in wrestling than seeing WALTER beat the crap out of some goofy NXT UK young boys. Like last week, when WALTER and Ilja Dragunov went at it. People actually talked about the match, which is the first time I remember that happening for an NXT UK match since…WALTER vs. Pete Dunne?

Sure, there were parts that annoyed me. They did the goofy end-match spiel that everybody does where the loser takes 15 moves that should have been finishers & kicked out. And I was ready to give them some credit when WALTER slammed the kid on the floor, steps, apron, then did a top rope splash. Surely that was the finish, and I was going to give them credit for Dragunov not kicking out of too much. Whoops. But that’s modern-day wrestling.

I can’t let those flaws take away from the sheer joy of WALTER beating people up. And since they’re all people I haven’t heard of, and likely sex perverts based off the NXT UK average, I don’t have to feel bad for the poor bastards across the ring from him.

1. Eddie Kingston

It wasn’t that long ago that Eddie Kingston was contemplating retirement.

It was even more recent than that when Eddie Kingston was selling his boots to pay the rent.

Now look at him! The Mad King is main-eventing AEW Full Gear, facing Jon Moxley in an I Quit match for the AEW Championship. Who had that on their 2020 bingo card? Two former CZW Champions who were among the most gifted talkers of their indy wrestling generation in a nationally televised company’s main event program. It’s a beautiful thing.

Every time I’ve ever heard Eddie Kingston talk, I’ve had no doubt that everything he said was what he believed. There aren’t many people in wrestling I can say that about. He makes you believe. He’s a huge betting underdog heading into Full Gear. It would be a massive surprise if he made Moxley quit and became the AEW World Champion.

But, man, this is 2020.

Nothing surprises me!

Chris King: The Wyatt Sicks’ Wasted Potential By WWE

Chris King takes a look at the WWE and their wasted potential of Uncle Howdy and the Wyatt Sicks faction.

Wyatt Sicks WWE

Chris King takes a look at the WWE and their wasted potential of Uncle Howdy and the Wyatt Sicks faction.

It’s that time of the year again, folks; it’s unfortunate and downright awful that so many WWE superstars got released today. I’m not going to list all of them, but I am going to talk about one of my favorite factions,

The Wyatt Sicks. Nikki Cross, Joe Gacy, Erik Rowan, and Bo Dallas (Uncle Howdy) were something special. After Bo’s brother Bray Wyatt’s tragic passing, WWE felt like there was a hole that needed to be filled. Wyatt was one of the most creative and brilliant characters, and Bo would be taking over his brother’s concept and bringing it to life. In 2024, at the end of an incredible documentary highlighting Wyatt’s career and struggles, Bo appeared on the screen portrayed as Uncle Howdy. The last time Uncle Howdy was seen on-screen was at the 2023 Royal Rumble, where Wyatt defeated LA Knight in a Pitch Black Match. Howdy jumped off a structure onto Knight.

This post-credit scene sparked so much speculation and excitement that Wyatt’s brother would carry on his legacy and possibly debut the faction that was Wyatt’s concept. On the June 17th episode of Monday Night Raw, The Wyatt Sicks made their dramatic debut ,destroying the backstage area as well as “murdering” Chad Gable. It was such an iconic arrival for Howdy as he made his menacing walk from the back into the audience who were chanting “Holy Shit.” The Sicks and American Made (Chad Gable and The Creed Brothers) battled for months, with The Sicks being victorious. On the September 9th episode of Raw, The Sicks defeated them, with Howdy getting the win with Sister Abigail.

The following year, The Sicks would move over to Friday Night SmackDown, and it seemed like WWE had a plan in place. They would win the tag team championships from The Street Profits and start to look dominant. Now, what should have happened next is Howdy should have won the United States title. The Sicks could have held all the gold over on the blue brand, but it never happened. The Sicks entered into a never-ending feud with The MFT’s (Solo Sikoa, Tama Tonga, Tonga Loa, JC Mateo, and Talla Tonga.) It started off exciting, and the WWE Universe was red-hot for their interactions.

After months of repetitive matches and The MFT’s stealing their lantern, the feud grew tiresome and boring. Even Tama asked Solo why they are still holding onto the lantern, as it was destroying them as a whole. Finally on the SmackDown before Mania, Tama

gave the lantern back to Howdy against Solo’s wishes. Please explain to me why both factions fought almost every single week instead of just having one final blowoff match at WrestleMania.

It should have been either a massive street fight or a falls count anywhere match on the grandest stage of them all. Instead, it turned into a meaningless week-after-week extravaganza that benefited no one. The MFTs won the rivalry, and The Sicks don’t even work for WWE anymore. This was the same criminalized creative process that Wyatt dealt with during his first run in the company.

We’ll never know how much of a dangerous force The Wyatt Sicks could have been in the WWE. For all their careers’ sake, I hope they stay far away from the company for as long as possible. Every superstar that was cut deserves better!

Chris King: Bloodline Saga: Is This the Right Call For WWE?

Chris King questions the WWE’s logic in setting up Jacob Fatu as the next challenger for World Heavyweight Champion Roman Reigns

WWE Jacob Fatu Roman Reigns Backlash

Chris King questions the WWE’s logic in setting up Jacob Fatu as the next challenger for World Heavyweight Champion Roman Reigns

Roman Reigns is once again World Heavyweight Champion after his dominant win over CM Punk at WrestleMania 42. On the following night on Monday Night Raw, The OG Bloodline came back together as a well-oiled machine as The Usos stood side by side with Roman. With the WWE Universe asking who would be the first to challenge “The Tribal Chief,” Jacob Fatu shocked the world by answering the call.

Fatu is running hot after his impressive win over Drew McIntyre and feels like he is ready to become the new world champion. This bloodline segment ended Raw, and it picked right back up on SmackDown with even Solo Sikoa and the MFTs involved. This is now two shows that have been centered around The Bloodline saga, and it’s made me question whether or not WWE should be retelling this story.

The Bloodline (Roman Reigns, The Usos, and Solo Sikoa) ran WWE for over four years as Reigns’ henchmen, doing his dirty work to retain his title. Even though Roman has declared he doesn’t want Jey and Jimmy to serve him, it sure seems like WWE are spinning their wheels. Fatu could add a whole new chapter into the story, even if he’s not able to beat Roman at Backlash. “The Samoan Werewolf” could be forced to do the same thing as Jey did all those years ago and fall in line.

In my opinion, I feel like Fatu should be challenging for the Undisputed WWE Championship because that’s a title I feel like he should win. I understand standing up to your blood and trying to prove you’re the best, but I don’t think this is the right move. It feels like 2022 all over again, as The Bloodline is the central focus on both shows. If Fatu doesn’t win, what happens to all his momentum he’s been building over the last two years?

Why did WWE make this the best choice for storyline purposes? Why couldn’t creative have come up with a different challenger for Roman? There are so many other superstars that could challenge The Tribal Chief, such as Rusev, Bron Breakker, Gunther, or even a returning Sheamus.

I just can’t help but question WWE’s logic here, and it kind of reminds me of all the times The Shield reunited. Could WWE be pushing the same storyline too many times here? Could the WWE Universe get tired of this rinse and repeat cycle of The Bloodline Saga?

Are we about to see all the weekly episodes solely focused on The Bloodline again? Will it be cinema… Yes. Is there still money in The Bloodline… Yes. Was it the right call? That’s to be determined!
