Official Rundown: The Chairshot 2020 Match of the Year

With exactly 300 votes counted, which match takes the 2020 Chairshot Match of the Year?

Published

on

We exceeded last year’s voting numbers by coming up with exactly 300 votes! This was a surprising vote, and it was surprising because it was mostly a two horse race. WALTER vs Ilja Dragunov won the vote in a few groups, but not all of them.

So let’s see which match got the biggest push!

5. NXT In Your House: NXT Women’s Champion Triple Threat: Io Shirai vs Charlotte Flair (c) vs Rhea Ripley

Charlotte Flair NXT Championship Io Shirai Rhea Ripley

Total Votes – 15

Our June addition to the list, made enough of a splash to hit #12 in WWE’s own Top 25 but, it was completely overshadowed by the other four finalists in ours. The match that crowned Io as the champion to try and guide the NXT Women’s division through the darkness of 2020, while cementing Rhea as a force, just not quite enough of a force to stop wrestling royalty.

Rhea and Charlotte definitely do good work together, and with Charlotte returning from her time off; we could see this get re-sparked. Rhea still technically needs an official one on one rematch. Hopefully not wearing a Vegeta homage this time, since that totally telegraphed losing.

4. AEW Revolution: AEW World Tag Team Championship: Hangman Page & Kenny Omega (c) vs The Young Bucks

Total Votes – 29

A match the retreaded most of the moves and feelings of the Golden Lovers versus Young Bucks angle in 2018, this helped to kick off AEW hot. Granted it also put a weird spotlight on the division after quarantine hit when two singles guys were dominating “the best tag division in the world”.

Aside from the snark at the end of my last statement, this did start the ball rolling nicely for Hangman this year. Driving wedges between different Elite members, becoming increasingly more of a drunk and distraction, which culminated in his banishment and the Elite reverting back to their smarmy heel personas by the end of the year.

Star ratings aside, the match was good; honestly a little surprised it didn’t have more support.

3. Wrestle Kingdom 14: Double Gold Match: Kazuchika Okada vs Tetsuya Naito

Total Votes: 57

Well now, already at 3 we no longer have the chance for a two time MotY winner. Okada and Naito may have been good enough to snag the Tokyo Sports Awards match of the year, it didn’t translate as well among the Western IWC.

This could be due to the fact that New Japan felt like it peaked at Wrestle Kingdom. Without being able to get a Hiromu vs Naito pay off at the Anniversary Show, mixed with roughly 4 months of inactivity, then THAT EVIL situation…NJPW peaked. EVIL probably pulled down a lot of feelings towards Naito in general. Where the stories were all built around Naito, and he got two big feel good moments for his personal story, EVIL dragged down match quality and felt like grasping at straws to many.

Let’s also not forget this also started us down this weird rabbit hole of the IWGP Intercontinental and Heavyweight feeling kinda lame put together. That doesn’t stop it from being a great match, it just lead to a lot of questionable/bad things.

2. NXT UK: United Kingdom Championship: WALTER (c) vs Ilja Dragunov

Total Votes – 90

NXT UK came off of hiatus with a vengeance! This match had everyone in the wrestling community buzzing. From Meltzer to Cornette to even the most die hard flippy fan, all agreed this match was damn good.

Ilja made himself, the fight, the energy the determination were all palpable; yet WALTER still stood tall as the champion. It was great story telling, great old school style of wrestling, and a violent delight.

As you can see from my earlier allusion, this won a few groups, tracked well in other (including Japanese leaning groups), but it couldn’t quite overcome the tidal wave of support that the last match garnered.

1. NOAH Final Chronicle: GHC Heavyweight Championship: Go Shiozaki (c) vs Takashi Sugiura

Total Votes – 109

Only winning by 19, which honestly, I’m surprised this got so much support. Pro Wrestling NOAH has shot up on many radars, thanks in part to Go Shiozaki’s ability to make every title defense feel enormous and tell a different story. Hell, the match even got high 5 star praise from Meltzer (take that for what you will, using it more as a point to show improved visibility).

Shiozaki’s stories told everything from carrying the torch of true NOAH during this new CyberFight regime when he won the belt from Kaito Kiyomiya, a war of attrition between someone of near legend status in Kazuyuki Fujita, embracing the demons of the past with Akitoshi Saito, quelling rumblings of who really is NOAH by beating rival Naomichi Marufuji, Champion versus Champion stalemate with the violently brash Kenoh, avenging the betrayal of his best friend Katsuhiko Nakajima, and lastly solidifying his stance as the Spirit of NOAH by not failing against Takashi Suguira who tends to have his number during title reigns.

This match was the culmination of a great year, a great story and set the table for a big match next year in the Budokan against Keiji Mutoh. Perhaps recency bias, or people just enjoying a well thought out puro story, where many feel New Japan has failed this year.

Thoughts:

I am still extremely surprised NOAH pulled this off. In only their second foray to our Top 5, and first since 2017, this has to be considered a bit of an upset. I may have been touting NOAH as the promotion of the year, but these votes haven’t agreed with my personal number 1 since Omega vs Okada in 2017.

This puts a nice bow on the uncertainty of 2020. After near obscurity and bankruptcy, who would’ve thought that when nearly every other company struggled to be captivating, NOAH was truly the ark leading to better times.

2021 is truly wide open, and that’s kind of an exciting outlook to have. A shift in power in Japan? AEW/IMPACT perhaps doing enough together to become a relevant force? Injured, quarantined and generally returning stars providing a spark to NXT? Plus it’s always fun to see if anything takes the IWC by surprise, a lot like NOAH did this year.

Fun times on the horizon everyone!

Chris King: The Wyatt Sicks’ Wasted Potential By WWE

Chris King takes a look at the WWE and their wasted potential of Uncle Howdy and the Wyatt Sicks faction.

Wyatt Sicks WWE

Chris King takes a look at the WWE and their wasted potential of Uncle Howdy and the Wyatt Sicks faction.

It’s that time of the year again, folks; it’s unfortunate and downright awful that so many WWE superstars got released today. I’m not going to list all of them, but I am going to talk about one of my favorite factions,

The Wyatt Sicks. Nikki Cross, Joe Gacy, Erik Rowan, and Bo Dallas (Uncle Howdy) were something special. After Bo’s brother Bray Wyatt’s tragic passing, WWE felt like there was a hole that needed to be filled. Wyatt was one of the most creative and brilliant characters, and Bo would be taking over his brother’s concept and bringing it to life. In 2024, at the end of an incredible documentary highlighting Wyatt’s career and struggles, Bo appeared on the screen portrayed as Uncle Howdy. The last time Uncle Howdy was seen on-screen was at the 2023 Royal Rumble, where Wyatt defeated LA Knight in a Pitch Black Match. Howdy jumped off a structure onto Knight.

This post-credit scene sparked so much speculation and excitement that Wyatt’s brother would carry on his legacy and possibly debut the faction that was Wyatt’s concept. On the June 17th episode of Monday Night Raw, The Wyatt Sicks made their dramatic debut ,destroying the backstage area as well as “murdering” Chad Gable. It was such an iconic arrival for Howdy as he made his menacing walk from the back into the audience who were chanting “Holy Shit.” The Sicks and American Made (Chad Gable and The Creed Brothers) battled for months, with The Sicks being victorious. On the September 9th episode of Raw, The Sicks defeated them, with Howdy getting the win with Sister Abigail.

The following year, The Sicks would move over to Friday Night SmackDown, and it seemed like WWE had a plan in place. They would win the tag team championships from The Street Profits and start to look dominant. Now, what should have happened next is Howdy should have won the United States title. The Sicks could have held all the gold over on the blue brand, but it never happened. The Sicks entered into a never-ending feud with The MFT’s (Solo Sikoa, Tama Tonga, Tonga Loa, JC Mateo, and Talla Tonga.) It started off exciting, and the WWE Universe was red-hot for their interactions.

After months of repetitive matches and The MFT’s stealing their lantern, the feud grew tiresome and boring. Even Tama asked Solo why they are still holding onto the lantern, as it was destroying them as a whole. Finally on the SmackDown before Mania, Tama

gave the lantern back to Howdy against Solo’s wishes. Please explain to me why both factions fought almost every single week instead of just having one final blowoff match at WrestleMania.

It should have been either a massive street fight or a falls count anywhere match on the grandest stage of them all. Instead, it turned into a meaningless week-after-week extravaganza that benefited no one. The MFTs won the rivalry, and The Sicks don’t even work for WWE anymore. This was the same criminalized creative process that Wyatt dealt with during his first run in the company.

We’ll never know how much of a dangerous force The Wyatt Sicks could have been in the WWE. For all their careers’ sake, I hope they stay far away from the company for as long as possible. Every superstar that was cut deserves better!

Chris King: Bloodline Saga: Is This the Right Call For WWE?

Chris King questions the WWE’s logic in setting up Jacob Fatu as the next challenger for World Heavyweight Champion Roman Reigns

WWE Jacob Fatu Roman Reigns Backlash

Chris King questions the WWE’s logic in setting up Jacob Fatu as the next challenger for World Heavyweight Champion Roman Reigns

Roman Reigns is once again World Heavyweight Champion after his dominant win over CM Punk at WrestleMania 42. On the following night on Monday Night Raw, The OG Bloodline came back together as a well-oiled machine as The Usos stood side by side with Roman. With the WWE Universe asking who would be the first to challenge “The Tribal Chief,” Jacob Fatu shocked the world by answering the call.

Fatu is running hot after his impressive win over Drew McIntyre and feels like he is ready to become the new world champion. This bloodline segment ended Raw, and it picked right back up on SmackDown with even Solo Sikoa and the MFTs involved. This is now two shows that have been centered around The Bloodline saga, and it’s made me question whether or not WWE should be retelling this story.

The Bloodline (Roman Reigns, The Usos, and Solo Sikoa) ran WWE for over four years as Reigns’ henchmen, doing his dirty work to retain his title. Even though Roman has declared he doesn’t want Jey and Jimmy to serve him, it sure seems like WWE are spinning their wheels. Fatu could add a whole new chapter into the story, even if he’s not able to beat Roman at Backlash. “The Samoan Werewolf” could be forced to do the same thing as Jey did all those years ago and fall in line.

In my opinion, I feel like Fatu should be challenging for the Undisputed WWE Championship because that’s a title I feel like he should win. I understand standing up to your blood and trying to prove you’re the best, but I don’t think this is the right move. It feels like 2022 all over again, as The Bloodline is the central focus on both shows. If Fatu doesn’t win, what happens to all his momentum he’s been building over the last two years?

Why did WWE make this the best choice for storyline purposes? Why couldn’t creative have come up with a different challenger for Roman? There are so many other superstars that could challenge The Tribal Chief, such as Rusev, Bron Breakker, Gunther, or even a returning Sheamus.

I just can’t help but question WWE’s logic here, and it kind of reminds me of all the times The Shield reunited. Could WWE be pushing the same storyline too many times here? Could the WWE Universe get tired of this rinse and repeat cycle of The Bloodline Saga?

Are we about to see all the weekly episodes solely focused on The Bloodline again? Will it be cinema… Yes. Is there still money in The Bloodline… Yes. Was it the right call? That’s to be determined!
