SummerSlam Match Speculation: July 15-21, 2018

So, we have now entered SummerSlam season, the build up to what some consider the WrestleMania of the Summer. Once again, the Biggest Party of the Summer will be coming to us from the Barclay’s Center. Even though this is only week one of the build, I thought we could have some fun speculating on what WWE might be planning to present us on August 19th. This is not a complete list, just what I think is going to go on with the titles and some of the major storylines going on and will change over time.

RAW:

Universal Title: Brock Lesnar vs ?: Okay, I’m going to be honest and say that I really think Roman’s going to get this match. There’s been speculation among Reigns fans that Vince must have promised Roman something big down the road to make the last minute swerves of WrestleMania and Greatest Royal Rumble more palatable. Reigns has a better case to get that spot than anyone else on the roster due to the bad call of the referee at Greatest Royal Rumble. Right now, this is my pick for the Universal Title Match. Whether Vince will actually take the belt off of Lesnar is another matter.

Women’s Championship: Alexa Bliss vs Ronda Rousey: This is basically a given and the fact that a Women’s Title match was the first one announced for one of the Big Four PPVs is really something special. WWE’s done a great job of building this and people want to see Rousey tear Bliss apart.

Intercontinental Championship: Dolph Ziggler vs ?: After Sunday’s Iron Man match and his loss on RAW, I think Seth Rollins is going to be back in the Intercontinental Title picture before too long. Whether that picture will also include a certain Lunatic from Ohio, who is due back around late August, early September, is something else to think about.

Tag Team Championship: This one is tough to call. I honestly don’t see the B Team getting a long title run. I think they’ll beat Deleters of Worlds but drop the belts to either Revival or Authors of Pain at SummerSlam.

Sasha Banks vs Bayley: Despite the seeming reconciliation on Monday, I don’t think this storyline is done. Sasha and Bayley have too many issues with each other to just bury the hatchet like that. I think WWE’s slowing things down a little to have the match at SummerSlam.

John Cena vs Undertaker?: Okay, this is pure speculation, but there is a rumor going around that Taker and/or Cena might be on the SummerSlam card and that there might be a WrestleMania rematch between the two. I’m not thrilled by this idea, but it’s been awhile since we’ve seen Cena, so it’s about time for Big Match John to show his face.

Kevin Owens vs Braun Strowman: I don’t think these two are finished with each other yet, not after what happened at Extreme Rules. Owens is not a man who has ever known when to give up or shut up and I can easily see him reasserting himself in this feud with Strowman.

Smackdown:

WWE Championship: AJ Styles vs ?: I think WWE is building towards Styles vs Samoa Joe, personally. Joe absolutely destroyed Tye Dillinger on Tuesday and Styles handed Andrade Almas his first defeat by making him tap to the Calf Crusher. These two have a long history as allies and opponents, a match between them would be an amazing addition to the SummerSlam card.

Women’s Title: Carmella vs ?: Given the events of Sunday, the return of James Ellsworth, and Becky’s growing momentum and her amazing promo on Tuesday, I think WWE’s building up to Becky vs Carmella at SummerSlam and I say it’s about time.

United States Championship: Shinsuke Nakamura vs ?: Given Jeff’s injured back, and the events of tonight, I’m guessing we’re going to get Orton vs Nakamura. Though Orton and Nakamura are both heels right now, WWE’s usual booking will make Orton the face and Nakamura the heel.

Tag Team Championship: Bludgeon Brothers vs ?: This is tough to call. Bludgeon Brothers have been extremely dominant and it’s going to take a heck of a team to beat them. My money is either on the Usos getting another shot or the Bar being put in the spot.

Daniel Bryan vs Miz: I think this one is pretty much a lock for SummerSlam, given the events of Tuesday. It’s been a match that fans have been clamoring for since Bryan was cleared to wrestle back in March.

New Day vs Sanity: I think this is a feud that’s going to go to SummerSlam to give Sanity its first big feud on the Main Roster.

Again, this is just the ones I came up with for the major storylines on both shows. I’m well aware that Balor/Corbin isn’t on here, simply because I don’t think the feud will go to SummerSlam. We’ll see how things develop next week.

Andrew – Stephanie Vaquer – *Bubba Sparxxx Impression* I don’t tell stories, I let them tell theyself.
Dave – Guilia – A stacked field but I just like her here.

Rey – Naomi – If Naomi loses, we riot!

Greg – Alexa Bliss – Bliss has had huge reactions since returning and is moving a ton of merch. While I can see them wanting to build Roxanne Perez, Giulia, or Stephanie Vaquer, I think Alexa Bliss.

Tunney’s Take: Rhea Ripley – I’ll make my case short and sweet… Mami in the Bank! You can’t leave that money on the table.

Chairshot Pick – Tie – Naomi 3 & Roxanne Perez 3 (Alexa Bliss 2, Giulia 1, Rhea Ripley 1, Stephanie Vaquer 1)

Andrew – El Grande Americano – Feels correct given his push and the fact he’s over.
Dave – Seth Rollins – Got to push that new faction.

Rey – LA Knight – Looks like another push, and he does have history with Cena.
Rob – Solo Sikoa
Greg – Seth Rollins – This company is extremely high in the El Grande Americano gimmick, but this match comes down to Seth Rollins or LA Knight. Given the Rollins storyline, it’s his briefcase to win.

Tunney’s Take: El Grande Americano – Picture this: Chad Gable wins the AAA Mega Championship and El Grande Americano wins MITB! WHAT A SATURDAY in LA!!!

AJ – Becky Lynch – Sadly
Andrew – Becky Lynch – I still don’t care about Lyra.
Dave – Lyra Valkyria – Starting to warm up to her and Becky has a lot to do with that.

Tunney’s Take: Becky Lynch – A big part of me feels that winning this title checks off a major box for Becks in her HOF career.

Andrew – Rhodes & Uso – Easy way for Cena to lose without eating the pinfall.

Tunney’s Take: Cena & Paul – I don’t think Cena is involved in another loss until he loses the WWE Championship. I also think Logan Paul is NOT done trying to capture Jey Uso’s World Heavyweight Championship. …Travis Scott in the house?

May is upon us and with that, so is Backlash from St. Louis! What does the first PLE after WrestleMania have in store for the WWE Universe? Let’s see if the Chairshot Staff can properly interpret the crystal ball of rasslin’ future.

AJ – Pat MacAfee – Gunther has to start losing control and who better than an announcer.
Andrew – Pat MacAfee – Goldberg getting involved does seem correct here.
Dave – Gunther – He’s not losing to a broadcaster.
DJ – Gunther – Pat is sent to the shadow realm until football season is over.
DPP – Gunther – Post match beat down leads to Pat time off.
Jason – Gunther – One massive spot and or bump from Pat.
Patrick – Gunther
Rey – Gunther – RIP MacAfee, t’was a good life.

Greg – Pat MacAfee – Why? Goooooldbeeerrrrrgggggg!

Tunney’s Take: Gunther – Seems like the right pick here. Pat may be getting some time off and Gunther needs more heat.

Tunney’s Take: Jacob Fatu – Uncle Mo is on Fatu’s side and other than Knight, I don’t see Drew or Priest holding the US title in the current circumstances of this title’s landscape.

AJ – Dominic Mysterio – Judgement Day shenanigans just leading up to Finn turning on Dom later.
Andrew – Penta – Dom’s fine having a short reign, could also work for pushing AAA.
Dave – Dominic Mysterio – He’s probably more over than Penta.
DJ – Dominic Mysterio – Dirty Dom takes home the gold and the girl.
DPP – Dominic Mysterio – Big Head helps Dom pull out the win.

Tunney’s Take: Dominic Mysterio – That belt looks good with the king of chicken tendys. I can see Penta and Rey reforming as a tag team sooner than later.

AJ – John Cena – Why? Cena wins, lol.
Andrew – John Cena – Shenanigans ensue so it’s not a clean win.
Dave – John Cena – The last time is now.
DJ – John Cena – Randy hears voices telling him he needs an Attitude Adjustment.
DPP – John Cena – Cena tries to cheat but the ref doesn’t call for a DQ.
Jason – John Cena – Nefarious means, Randy not ready for Evil John Cena.

Rey – John Cena – Cena just counting down the dates. Should be fun though.

Greg – John Cena – You know they want Cody to be the hero in the end.

Tunney’s Take: Randy Orton – Once upon a time Randy got himself intentionally disqualified and it cost John. Saturday, history repeats itself with a 180-degree twist. Cena retains via Orton DQ victory. This time, Travis Scott’s appearance takes care of that task.
