Backstage: Missy Hyatt is wondering what was up with The Ninja. She goes to check in with the reigning United States Champion and enters Rick Rude’s dressing room. She sees all the members of The Dangerous Alliance gathered and Paul E. Dangerously unmasked in a ninja outfit. They freak out and chase her out of the locker room.

Match #8 for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship: WCW World Heavyweight Champion Lex Luger w/Harley Race vs. Sting
Luger paces the ring, and Sting asks what Luger’s problem is. They have a long dialogue in the middle of the ring. Luger finally gets fired up and shoves his former friend, Sting lectures him before returning a shove. Collar and elbow tie up, they jockey for position in the corner. The referee breaks up both men who are on fire. Luger screams in Patrick’s face. Collar and elbow tie up, Luger with blows to the back of Sting’s head. Sting’s face hits the turnbuckle, Luger with an Irish whip but Sting moves. Stinger comes back with an Irish whip and a Stinger Splash.

The crowd loves it, but the champion is quick to come back off the corner with a lariat. Sting is sent for the ride and the Total Package executes a power slam. He calls for an early torture rack, but Sting backflips out of it. He grabs Luger for a German release suplex, followed by lifting Lex on his shoulders for his own move. It doesn’t last long and he drops Luger to the mat. Luger defends himself in the corner with a kick to the midsection, he sends Sting to the ropes and sets up a back body drop. Sting stops short and leaps into a DDT, Luger rolls to the outside to check in with his mentor.

Race gets up on the apron to distract Sting and Luger pulls him down to the floor. Sting blocks a head shot on the guard rail and Luger suffers the fate instead. Luger retreats in the ring, Sting puts his boot the throat. Irish whip by Sting and he lands a back body drop. He cannot get the pin, so he gets up for the Scorpion Deathlock. Luger quickly crawls to the ropes to break it. Sting pursues Luger in the corner but receives an eye rake. Clubbing forearm by Luger and he scrapes Sting’s eyes on the top rope. An uppercut brings Sting to his knees, Luger pulls him back up for three kicks to the midsection. Sting gets tossed to the corner, Luger works the body.

Sting fights back and walks Lex backwards with a blatant chokehold. Nick Patrick tries to get in between them and Luger takes advantage with a low blow. Double leg takedown by The Total Package. He picks Sting up for an inverted atomic drop, and he taunts the fans. Sting is sent for the ride and lifted for a gorilla press slam. Race says it’s time for the Attitude Adjustment, and he plants him. Sting manages to kick out. Luger drives his elbow into Sting’s chest multiple times and tries another pin, once again the challenger kicks out. Sting staggers as he attempts to fight back, he lands a few body shots and picks up momentum.

Luger is struck all the way to the mat. Sting plants his face into the mat and rubs it into the canvass. Luger’s face is raked across the top rope followed by a hot shot. Luger begs Sting to stop, but he’s pulled up and has his back raked. More rights from Sting, he attempts a clothesline, Luger moves but Sting hangs onto the rope enough to land on his feet. Luger gives chase and rams Stinger into the rail. Luger rolls in the ring and runs a distraction while Harley Race sets up a piledriver on the floor. Instead, Sting lifts him for a back body drop. Luger doesn’t see Sting climbing the top rope, he comes off with a flying cross body and gets the 1-2-3.
Winner and NEW WCW World Heavyweight Champion: Sting (Top Rope Crossbody)

  • EA’s Take: The jabs at the exiting Lex Luger continue as the commentators ponder how he has become so much bigger in such a short amount of time. Obviously insinuating that he’s taking steroids, the announcers are making comments about how he’s sweating bullets while Sting hasn’t even broken a sweat. I imagine if Luger was to drop the title on his way out the door, he’s happy to give it to his buddy and I enjoyed the match, but it’s strange to hear WCW being so openly and publicly petty about a departure like this. As if it’s Lex Luger’s fault that Flair took the WCW World Title to WWF television.

EA’s Finisher: No complaints with this PPV! I’ve been approaching each of these early 1990’s shows with caution because of so many infamous, corny moments on both promotions during this time. This was simply solid matches with one legitimate gem and there’s a big nostalgia value with so many “future names” as the stars of the upcoming Monday Night Wars are becoming more prevalent. When you grade all 8 matches and one of the lower ranked matches is probably Simmons vs. Foley, you know you’ve done alright. The low-light of the show was Missy Hyatt – she is such an annoying ditz and I know that’s the gimmick, but it’s like nails on a chalkboard to me. There is no way she has a job if she were not the village bicycle if you know what I mean. Don’t @ me either, these are facts people. Overall, one of the better, early 90’s WCW PPVs you could sit down to watch.

Top Three To Watch
1 – ‘Flyin’ Brian Pillman vs. Jushin Thunder Liger
2 – Bobby Eaton & Arn Anderson vs. The Steiner Brothers
3 – Lex Luger vs. Sting
