3. I’m Sorry I Love You

While this might seem more like a Ric Fliar moment Shawn had an important part in this moment. Flair new he didn’t have left until he would have to retire so he wanted to face someone he respected at WrestleMania. He choose Shawn and out of respect Shawn accepted.

Being two of the greatest of all time this would have been a big match with or without the retirement stipulation. Having said that the fact that Flair’s career was on the line added a lot of dram as both men gave everything they had. It all culminated in the heartbreaking moment where Flair seemingly begs Shawn to finish him.

Shawn’s words “I’m sorry I love you”before delivering the final blow was so poetic.

2. WrestleMania 25

A classic example that you can put on a great match regardless of age. Shawn and Taker put on all time great match and both men were in their forties.

Full with enough twists, turns and finisher kick outs to keep you hooked. The finish was excellent as Shawn made a small mistake allowing Taker to catch him with the tombstone. The impact of this match is that despite it being less than 10 years ago a number of fans already see it as their favourite match of all time.

It was definitely the best match of Mania 25 by a country mile.

1. His Last Match

As I said earlier all good things must come to an end and Shawn couldn’t go forever. How do try to follow a classic match? By putting a career on the line.

They told an excellent story in the lead up with Shawn unable to get over not being able to beat the Undertaker. This included a standout performance in the 2010 Royal Rumble. He eventually managed to convince Taker to take the match on the condition that Shawn put his career on the line.

While the previous match was better in ring this match was better from a storyline standpoint. Fans didn’t want Shawn to retire but they also didn’t want to see the end of the streak. There was a real sense of drama because you weren’t sure how it was going to go.

Similar to the end of Shawn’s match with Ric Flair Shawn had to dare to Taker to finish him. He slapped Taker in the face to get him to finish him with a third tombstone. The match rightly main evented the show and Shawn gave a touching speech the following night. Unlike many legends Shawn has managed to stay retired and resisted the urge to come back for one more match.
