Joe’s Lucha Libre Weekly: News & Opinions (10/13/2018)
Impact
So La Parka from AAA was on Impact last week and faced Eli Drake. I don’t know if the commentators were aware or if they were trying to deceive the fans but they tried to pass off this guy as the original La Parka which the fans in Mexico are obviously smartened up to. Throughout the whole match they were booing and chanting LA Park the whole match. Don Callis says he knows how to use a chair when he picks it up. I don’t believe La Parka in AAA is known for using a chair. When Parka was announced as the winner, a fan in the crowd can be seen pointing the middle finger at him. Not a good look for Impact making all these errors.
MLW
News out of MLW is that the November show in Chicago will see LA Park and his son take on Pentagon and Fenix in a tag team titles match. Also an interesting thing happened at the show that I was at, when they announced Rush showing up soon. Since then it’s been announced that he will be debuting at the Chicago tapings. So we are gonna have Rush and LA Park in another promotion. I wonder if they’ll try to build that feud in MLW as well to see if it gains traction in America so the match that they’ll eventually have for mask vs hair can happen on a larger scale. MLW is building a nice roster, all they need now is to continue building momentum.
Here & There
Since there’s pretty much no AAA news for a few weeks because they haven’t been running shows, these opinion pieces will be a bit shorter so here I’m going to talk about my precieved differences between AAA and CMLL.
So some differences I’ve noticed is CMLL is a lot more technical and clean in it’s wrestling. They barely botch and they do a ton of chain and freestyle wrestling. If you watch CMLL you’ll come away thinking, “Huh these guys are on average the best in ring wrestlers in the world.” Because they actual do legitimate amateur wrestling. They add in their lucha libre as apart of that and it’s a beautiful thing to watch. They’re definitely more traditional though. Rarely do they get sports entertainmenty and when they do they save it for special occasions like when big outsiders like LA Park come in. They also do two out of three falls for every match unless indicated by a match relampago which translates to a lightning match which has a ten minute time limit.
AAA is definitely more sports entertainment orientated. It somewhat reminds me of a more controlled WCW 2000. I don’t mean that in a bad way. I feel like if you watch WCW 2000 and take the storylines they did and drew them out that the period would be a lot better. Vince Russo’s problem was not being able to tell stories and he didn’t know how to extend them, it’s not per se that his ideas were bad. You can have good ideas and be a bad writer. Creativity isn’t confined to just a few things.
So it gives me those vibes because it’s very fast paced, and not as clean as CMLL. They are definitely into the high spots more and it makes sense since they use a lot of American indie workers. They love to use blood for extra impact on storylines and often their biggest stars aren’t their best workers in the main event, something else similar to WCW post 1995. They also have a lot more promo segments. CMLL in fact doesn’t have promo segments, guys will just cut promos after the match like in New Japan sometimes.
Another thing is business philosophy. CMLL is content to run the same four or five buildings over and over and over and turn a consistent healthy profit while AAA tends to take more risks and tour in lots of areas. AAA is interested in expanding into America and one can’t blame them when you see the excessive money being thrown around for some TV deals. They were going to run MSG but when they lost Rey Mysterio plans changed. So CMLL is content staying still and AAA wants to expand. AAA is also more prone to using outside talent while CMLL believes they don’t have to use outside talent because the best wrestlers already work for them.
Obviously this past summer has shown how that’s a flawed mindset because bringing in Cibernetico, El Zorro, and Charlie Manson (Ciber, The Chris, and Scharly Rock Star) in addition toe Pentagon Jr, Fenix and LA Park had basically doubled their attendance for important shows. LA Park being the main mover. The final difference I see is AAA will let women work men while CMLL keeps the women to themselves.
So yeah those are the perceived differences I noticed. The business seems really fun in Mexico if you live there and speak Spanish. You have two products that are legit alternatives to each other and you even have The Crash which is like the ECW or indie territory where you can see interesting clashes in talent.
