Winners: Bishamon, by pinfall (still IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Champions)

The Fierce Warrior & The Head Hunter defeated the Dream Team, because they are THE team in NJPW! Will the Rainmaker have to just settle for being IWGP World Heavyweight Champion? And what will come of The Ace’s 2023?

As for Bishamon, they raise the belts in victory before Hashi gets the mic. “We have successfully defended our titles for the second time. And finally, though it was in a tag team match, I was able to get a win on Hiroshi Tanahashi!” Fans cheer that accomplishment. “Tanahashi once told me backstage that I better take a bite out of him while there’s still meat on the bones. But after today, it’s clear that he’s got a lot more to give. And he’ll continue to shine for years to come.” Fans applaud that, too.

Hashi continues to say, “It’s the 51st year of NJPW. Nobody imagined it’d be me, not Tanahashi or Okada, who would be speaking now, am I right?” Fans applaud, then chant, “YOSHI-HASHI! YOSHI-HASHI!” Hashi knows he can never be Tanahashi or Okada, “but I do believe that if I keep improving on myself, I will evolve. And here I am standing today.” Fans applaud that, and Hashi says he has one last thing to say. “If you leave here with pep in your step and a smile on your face, that’d make my day.” Fans applaud that, they appreciate it. Hashi then says that with Bishamon winning, the fans all know what comes next, right?

“The last time we did this, people couldn’t shout out. But you can today. How about we do ‘that’ to celebrate?” Fans like the sound of that! And Hashi doesn’t just mean some regular Zanmai. He wants an EPIC one! He asks for help from Toru Yano and Milano Collection AT on commentary. And a real big “HAI!” at the cue. Okay, everyone, are you ready? The fans cheer, and Hashi says here goes! Hashi pounds the mat and fans clap along. Hashi runs, Goto helps him roll, clap and “HAIII~!” A great moment for NJPW, both the wrestlers and the fans! Will Bishamon lead the way as NJPW gives us more great moments like this?

My Thoughts:

A great event for NJPW’s 51st anniversary, especially with it having a slight deviation from previous anniversary shows. No Heavyweight VS Junior Heavyweight Champion showdown, but there were a lot of great match-ups. A little surprised we got Team Strong Style VS House of Torture so soon after their NEVER Openweight Six Man title match, and that this was a non-title bout anyway. The United Empire is rolling, there’s gonna be big things for them in NJPW and even AEW and ROH this year. And big win for Yoh & Lio, I believe Lio is going to be up next for Hiromu Takahashi and the IWGP Junior Heavyweight title.

Shota VS Yujiro was a good match but Yujiro’s pace is almost purposefully slow and plotting so it makes it hard for the fans to get excited. Shota winning despite Sho helping Yujiro was a good move, as it would’ve just been a disappointing par-for-the-course move with the House of Torture. But I don’t think Shota beats Zack Sabre Jr. ZSJ is the previous New Japan Cup winner, he is still the NJPW World TV Champion, he is not going to lose for some time yet. Finlay VS Ishii was an awesome match, even if Finlay looks like bootleg Jay White. Finlay of course wins because of his new chapter being Bullet Club, who knows how far he’ll go.

And of course we got an awesome main event for the Heavyweight Tag Team titles. So many times it looked like Okada & Tanahashi were going to win, but as I felt yesterday, it just wouldn’t seem fair if Okada had two top level titles. Bishamon wins by pinning Tanahashi, a great thing for Hashi as he said himself, and there are all sorts of possibilities for their next challenge. Perhaps they’ll wait until the New Japan Cup is further along, and maybe Sakura Genesis in April will give us another tag title match.

My Score: 8.8/10

Andrew’s TNA Live iMPACT! Results & Match Ratings: 5.1.2025

The third LIVE iMPACT! of the year! First was really good, second wasn’t terrible…what’s this one give us?

Published

on

We get another Live episode from the campus of UC Irvine, hence why the show didn’t start until 10pm Bianca Belair time (est). The live episodes have been pretty good so far this year, so even though the TV episodes have kinda sucked the last month or so…there’s a glimmer of hope tonight.

Sure we’re gonna open with “hearing from Joe Hendry” because of course we are. But it’s also a live crowd and the fans still embrace the gimmick even if consuming the product weekly is wearing the gimmick thin for me personally. Let’s get to the show and see if we see Trick, Dark State, or any surprises.

Oh it looks like Wentz is gonna get his title shot tonight for the X Division title! That’s a little unexpected.

Ratings:

  • Mike Santana vs Isaiah Moore: Santana wins via Running Powerbomb – SQUASH
  • X Division Championship: Moose (c) w/The System vs Zachary Wentz w/Trey Miguel: Moose retains via Lights Out – *** 1/2
  • Maggie Lee vs Jody Threat w/Dani Luna: Jody wins via Pop Shove It – *
  • KC Navarro w/AJ Francis vs Leon Slater: Leon wins via Swanton 450 – ** 1/2
  • The Kaiba Boys & Frankie Kazarian vs Joe Hendry & The Hardy Boyz: Nic wins via Danger Zone – ***

Results:

So today is Hendry’s birthday, so the crowd pops and sings Happy Birthday, Hendry with a fairly stock standard babyface champion promo, calls out Trick, and Trick’s music plays but Trick has a tron message since he’s got a Battle Royal to prepare for. So basic steps, but nothing egregious.

Sami is called to the back by Santino and SDL & Mance show up, and they seemingly squash their issue “I don’t like ya, but I respect ya” kind of style. I’m just glad we get away from it since the feud kinda sucked. They tend to drag bad things out, like Kon versus PCO…awful.

Mike Santana vs Isaiah Moore

Enhancement talent match, Moore tries to start fast but his offense is slow. Everything he does looks like its in slow motion and aside from a dodge and flip here or there, Santana beats him easily. Outline in Chalk and then a Running Powerbomb, and its over.

After the match Santana cuts a choppy promo because the mic sucked, but it sounds like he’s setting his sights on Hendry and hopefully someone stops that. No one wants a Babyface vs Babyface title match, especially since TNA stories are written like 4 year olds with half eaten crayons. So we need someone to get in the way of Santana quick or things just won’t be good, that’s not even a jaded assumption, that’s just the facts of how the last few years have gone.

Maclin comes out to address his title defense and he gets mugged by the Northern Armoury on the way down the ramp. EY continues with the Dump Matsumoto tribute and uses the steel chain to beat the hell out of Maclin, choke him and then crucify him against the ropes. Just a typical beating segment to force the angle forward even though the protagonist has been winning the bulk of the interactions.

X Division Championship: Moose (c) w/The System vs Zachary Wentz w/Trey Miguel

Wentz starts quick, Sole Butts, Enzuigiris, perches and Moose tries a Go To Hell, but Wentz continues the speed kills idea. Connects with a flurry of strikes, Moose powders and Wentz hits a Tornillo, does the Rascalz pose into the camera and we go to commercial. Back from commercial we go to paint by numbers commercial break where Moose is in control after managing to knock Wentz off the turnbuckle at some point,  but after eating a few haymakers Wentz fires, PK, Sole Butt, Stomp, Triangle Moonsault and Wentz is rolling again! He throws Moose back in, another Tornillo this time from the corner and only a two count.

Wentz wants to fly, but Moose gets up, Leap Frog in Moose catching him in a Pop-Up Powerbomb, but only for two! Lights Out attempt, but Cradle Counter, kick, Double Leg Cradle, kick, Moose gets up, Escalara Crossbody, into a Kip Up, Looks for the Jacknife but CODE RED COUNTER from Wentz, but only a two count! Wentz tries to grab Moose, Moose grabs the tights to Dart Wentz into the buckles. Moose tries Lights Out again, X Factor counter form Wentz! SPIRAL TAP from Wentz but again, only a 2 count! UFO Cutter, but Moose shoves him away, Wentz tries to gather himself but Lish grabs his foot just long enough for Moose to finally hit Lights Out and retains.

Oh God it’s Deaner out to continue this sob story angle about his contract is expiring tonight. I hope it actually does, Jesus I can’t tolerate him. He’s the embodiment of cringe. Deaner must have grabbed the wrong script that said Dreamer, because this is some sappy useless idiot stuff. I hate everything about this sad sack crap, and now Santino’s music plays, he plays into the sad thing because of course he does he’s a goofy babyface. He said he can’t give a new contract, but he can extend it. Deaner will get a match at Under Siege versus Eddie Edwards. Robert Stone’s music kicks in! Robbie E and Alicia Fox are in the building because the higher ups are putting Santino Under Review and Victoria is getting a random title match at Under Siege. This was at least an interesting wrinkle.

Maggie Lee vs Jody Threat w/Dani Luna

Jody starts quick, a few Elbows, Thesz Presses, Ground and Pound, looks for her German Suplex off the ropes but Maggie holds on, Back Thrust Kick finally gives out Elegance Giant some momentum. A few well placed strikes, running Knee Strike in the corner, Bow and Arrow Submission, but Jody flips it around for a pinfall. Maggie kicks out, and Jody fires up with some slow blocks against bad punches, Jody goes for Cringe Kojima style chops, pulls off the Knees to the back into the German Suplex. Jody wants Pop Shove It, but Maggie claws the eyes, Jody perches and Maggie crotches her and then hits a Tower of London for two! Jody fires again, quick strike Lariats in the corner, Pop Shove It and Jody wins.

KC Navarro w/AJ Francis vs Leon Slater

Leon and KC change directions, dodge, and dodge, and continue to change angles. KC shows off, so a Kick to the face rocks him and then Leon starts putting some offense together. KC gets knocked out of the ring, Leon throws him into a post, KC manages a small counter, tries to throw Leon back in the ring and Leon Tiger Feints back out to drop KC down. Leon throws KC in, climbs the ropes and AJ starts to interfere but the ref sees him, ejects him and a Satellite DDT from KC gives him the chance to try and choke out Leon, but Leon drives him back into the corner, rope runs, Jump Kick into Final Cut for a two count!

KC powders, Leon goes for the Over the Post Dive, but KC moves. Leon lands his on his feet, KC is saying he’s too smart, gets cold cocked, thrown back in and Leon hits the Swanton 450 for the win.

This makes sense because they want to push Leon, but aside from flips he’s useless. KC has a great personality, great skillset and more than just flips. They want to Leon to become ‘the youngest X Division champ’ but I couldn’t be less interested in him.

The Kaiba Boys & Frankie Kazarian vs Joe Hendry & The Hardy Boyz

They bring back the Hendry Boyz mashup music for their entrance, which is actually pretty cool.

Kaz and Jeff start, but it breaks down immediately into all 6 men throwing hands, the babyfaces clear the ring and do the DELETE taunts…and commercial break. We come back from commercial and Matt is hitting Delete Headsmashes on Kaz, a Side Effect on Ryan and then hits the Extreme Elbow but only for two. Matt wants the Twist of Fate, but he gets too close to the heel corner. Nic grabs the ref, Kaz hits a Guillotine Leg Drop, Ryan with the Russian Leg Sweep and then tags in Nic who gets a few pot shots before tagging in Kaz. Kaz and Matt trade a few shots, Kaz claws the face and the heels keep control.

Ryan tags in, isolation in the corner keeps Matt getting pummeled, quick tag back to Kaz and the Cravat has Matt grounded until the crowd tries to fire him up…but Kaz throws him down and Springboard Leg Drop gets two. Kaz mocks the Twist of Fate for Matt counters with the Side Russian, simultaneous tag, Nic and Jeff are in. Jeff signature hot tag offense, Leg Drop, Elbow, Kaz feeds into a Jawbreaker, Ryan eats a Twist, Nic tries something but eats the Mule Kick. Jeff wants a Twist on Nic, but he tries to fight out, but Matt comes in to help, Poetry in Motion, Side Effect into Splash from Jeff! Everyone’s in the ring, series of Hat Trick Sack of Shits!

Kaz tries to use a belt, Joe ducks it and Matt hits the Twist on Kaz. Hendry hits the Standing Ovation, looks to Jeff to hit a Swanton, but Trick Williams shows up and pulls out Hendry during the chaos and throws him into the steps! Jeff gets crotched, Matt gets taken out, Danger Zone on Jeff! Heels win and Trick and Joe are back in the ring…TRICK SHOT leaves Joe laying!

Overall Score: 6.75/10

This wasn’t the best episode, but it was entertaining and nothing really seemed to drag…which is more than I can say for most of the TNA episodes last month or so. Robbie E and Alicia Fox were unexpected, Trick makes sense, Cody Deaner needs to go away forever, Wentz burning his title shot already is frustrating. It’s frustrating because I like Wentz and if they’re gonna crown Leon, it better not be against Moose. Leon has no charisma, he’s tiny, suspension of disbelief can’t wish this away. So if it’s inevitable, just have Moose either cash in Option C or drop it to someone who isn’t the charisma vacuum known as Leon Slater.

But yeah, it was an inoffensive show. Not a lot of wrestling but enough segments that didn’t overstay their welcome and kept the show moving along at a decent clip. Nothing to write home about, but it planted seeds for Under Siege and had some things to genuinely be interested in.

Six Man Tag: Johnny TV & MXM Collection VS Rosario Grillo & Da Russel Twins!

The Guru of Greatness, the Sultan of Suave & The Mahogany Hunk continue to show off the stolen ROH World Six Man title belt, but they are hoping to “complete the collection.” Will the Sons of Texas have no choice but to face #MXMTV? Or will #TheBigCannoli, #DRTYKam & #SleezyAl jump the line?

The trios sort out and despite the fans wanting Johnny TV, they get Mansoor. Rosario starts against Mansoor, but Mansoor wants a tip touch of honor. Rosario instead shakes the finger. The bell rings, the two circle, and the fans rally up. Mansoor then says, “WAIT! Why am I doing this?” Tag to Mason! Mason struts up to Rosario and wants a tie up. Rosario obliges, but Mason SHOVES Rosario down! Johnny points out Mason is wrestling with his sunglasses on! Mason offers his leg, Rosario takes the bait, and Mason lifts Rosario to SWING him and THROW him! Rosario sputters, and Mason POSES! Rosario tags Allen, and Allen CLUBS Mason!

Mason takes off his sunglasses to show how upset he is, and he stares Allen down. Allen whips, Mason blocks then reverses, but Allen dodges the boot, only for the LEG LARIAT to knock him down! Mason drags Allen to the drop zone, he tags in Johnny, and Johnny 450 SPLASHES, but Allen dodges! Johnny rolls through, turns around, but into a JUMP KNEE! Both men are down and the fans fire up! Allen and Johnny crawl, but in the wrong direction! They correct it, hot tags to Kameron and Mansoor! Kam fires haymakers, then dodges Mansoor to DROPKCIK! Mansoor tumbles out, Kam BLASTS Mason! Kam builds speed and DIVES! But Mason catches him, holds him up, and Mansoor DRAPING SENTONS on the apron! The fans fire up, Mason puts Kam in, and Johnny gives him a FLYING CHUCK!

Grand Slam: Mexico may not be for another month, but we’re getting quite the appetizer courtesy of The Chef and The Diva of the Ring! But will Red Velvet be able to handle the heat? Or will Catalina quickly go from caliente to fria?

The introductions are made, the belt is raised, and we see who is the Campeon de Televisión!

The Code of Honor is not upheld as Velvet just trolls Catalina. Twice even! But Catalina makes Velvet shake her hand, and the two circle. They tie up, go around, then break. They circle more, talk some trash, and then tie up again. Catalina wrenches, wristlocks, but Velvet wrenches and wristlocks back. Catalina handsprings and arm-drags! The fans cheer as Catalina does her dance. The fans rally behind her but Velvet headlocks. Catalina powers up but can’t get out as Velvet holds on tight. The Chef used some secret ingredients here, but she still denies The Diva her moment. Will Velvet be serving up L after L until there’s no one left to cook?

Griff Garrison & Cole Karter w/ The Frat House VS Spanish Announce Project!

The Ivy League MVP & Diamond in the Rough are tagging back together again, and it’s once again against Angelico y Serpentico. But playing the part of The First Lady of Wrestling, Maria Kanellis, will be Jacked Jameson & Preston Vance. Will Griff & Karter toast a win over on SAP? Or will El Casa de Fraternidad be drinking to forget tonight?

Speaking of drinking, two new “pledges” are challenged to a game of beer pong right on stage. Both guys take aim, and both guys fail to sink the balls in the cups. For their failures, they have to take their shirts off and take CHOPS! Then they’re pushed backstage to watch with the other newbs and losers. SAP finally make their entrance, and the streamers fly from Serpentico’s fingers! Griff & Karter off a “Sip of Honor,” but then they SPLASH SAP with the drinks! Griff drags Serpentico over to the Frat corner, rains down fists, and he doesn’t stop until the ref counts 4.

The fans fire up as Angelico rallies on The Frat House! Karter full nelsons but Angelico BOOTS Griff! Angelico RAMS Karter into a corner, arm-drags him away, and then uses Karter as a step to LEAPING LARIAT Griff! The fans fire up and Angelico feeds off that energy!

Karter runs up to ROCK Angelico, but Angelico ROCKS Karter! Angelico goes Matrix, Karter jumps the leg sweep but the EDDY GORDO KICK finds him! Cover, TWO! The fans boo as The Frat House cheats the win, but they’re not done! 4v2 to cheat, 4v2 to mug Angelico & Serpentico after the match! The fans boo harder, but wait! BANDIDO is here! The Most Wanted ROH World Champion rushes up and BOOTS Jameson! Then he GAMANGIRIS Griff! Bandido dodges Karter to SUPERKICK him! Then he dodges Vance, takes off the belt, and he BELT SHOTS Vance!! The fans fire up as Bandido wipes out four jacks, because he’s the ace! Will Bandido help Spanish Announce Project tener su venganza?

My Thoughts:

A very good ROH clocking in at about 45 minutes, again the perfect length. A little surprised there wasn’t even one promo tonight, though. Not even something from Athena and Billie Starkz to keep us updated on how they feel after losing the Women’s Owen Hart Cup, or the relationship with them and Diamante. A Six Woman Tag of them and any random three you want would be for some fun stuff. But with how ROH Supercard of Honor is no longer tomorrow, May 2nd, and is now in July to be part of All In Texas Week, it is clear ROH takes a big backseat to literally everything and anything else Tony Khan takes interest in.

In fact, all the more reason Velvet VS Catalina should’ve been tonight’s main event. Maybe it wasn’t the best match it could’ve been, but it was still pretty good. To me, it should’ve been the main event because for one, they’re also supposed to build Grand Slam: Mexico, aka AEW, ROH & CMLL doing stuff together. While Frat House VS SAP was a good tag match, it was a typical move of the Heels using their numbers game to win. I am a little surprised Bandido showed up to make the save over The Dark Order, because uh duh, Dark Order and Frat House have been feuding, and then you already have an 8 Man Tag right there.

MXM TV of course won their match against Grillo & The Russell Twins, but I’m also a little surprised they didn’t call out The Sons of Texas, nor did The Sons of Texas call them out in return for last time. But again, Supercard being moved probably screwed up all the plans for this next week or two. We’ll just have to see if something big can happen in June. But back to a positive note, great to see Mina Shirakawa back now that she’s formally left Stardom. Leila Grey looked good even in defeat, but that doesn’t bode well for Leila in the Women’s Pure Championship. I believe that tournament only has five entries, I hope we get some good names for the last three spots. Mina doesn’t really fit the ROH Pure Division in my opinion, and Mina should really be back in AEW stories after Double or Nothing.

My Score: 8.7/10
