Let’s face it; this new Shield run is currently the backbone of Raw at a time where WrestleMania season hasn’t quite hit yet. WWE needed a way to keep viewers intrigued while Brock could not have title matches, and reuniting the Shield came into the field of possibilities.

Yes, this Intercontinental championship run will give Roman “something to do” until he inevitably wins the Royal Rumble again and beats Brock Lesnar for the Universal title at WrestleMania 34. We get it, Roman is unstoppable, Roman is the apex, Roman is the only one who can beat Brock. Cool. Whatever. In the meantime though, I believe there were many other better candidates to take away Miz’s title.

Samoa Joe, Bray Wyatt and Finn Balor are a few names that come to mind. All those guys could really use the championship rub at this point in their careers. How awesome would it be to see Joe as a mid-card champion that runs down absolutely everyone in his way? How great would it be to see Bray actually win something and keep it? How fun would it be to watch Finn Balor hold down the mid-card of Raw since Vince doesn’t see him as a challenge for Brock anyway? All those candidates are stellar options to grow or revitalize WWE’s mid-card, but WWE had to give the title to someone who simply does not need it.
