NJPW News: Jim Ross Says Spot With Jay White ‘Was Not Storyline Driven’
For those of you that missed this past Saturday night’s New Japan Pro Wrestling G1 Special in San Francisco, not only did you miss some great action, but a much-talked about spot in the show where the commentary team became a focus of one of the matches.
As ‘Switchblade’ Jay White defended his IWGP United States Title against Juice Robinson, there was a spot where White hurled Juice into the barricade right in front of the English announcers, Jim Ross and Josh Barnett. Ross had commented all evening long about the referee’s lack of using the 20-count in what seemed to be every match on the card. When Robinson was tossed into the barricade in front of him, it sent the announce table sliding backwards and subsequently put Good Ol’ JR on his backside. This lead to what appeared to be a shoot between Josh Barnett and Jay White, as Barnett said before tossing his headset down, “You fu*#%ed up now”.
Barnett would go on to stalk White into the ring, leaving many questioning again whether it was a shoot or not. Josh would utter, “Did you see that mother fu%#&er run?”, into the camera before taking back his seat. Ross would compose himself, but also would give out his own foul language after putting his headset back on as he said, “The lack of control out here is ridiculous. Officials should get their sh%$ together”.
JR has since commented further today with the following tweet:
For the record, the ‘bump’ I took at ringside at #G1SanFrancisco was not storyline driven matter nor was it discussed.
I think I broke a rib.

EA’s Take: While I certainly hope that Ross is okay, these are the kinds of things that wrestling in general seems to mostly be missing today. The best stuff is always when you can’t tell what’s real and what isn’t, at least for me. These days with so much of us keyed into what’s really going on, when I “get got”, it’s not a very common occurrence anymore.
