Match #7: The Fabulous Freebirds (‘Gorgeous’ Jimmy Garvin & Michael ‘P.S.’ Hayes) vs. The Steiner Brothers (Rick & Scott)
The Freebirds waste no time to attack Scott. Rick is kicked out the ring. Side slam from Hayes and Scott is dropped by Garvin over the top rope. Double clothesline by the Birds. The ref backs Hayes off and Scott comes back with a back body drop on Garvin. Hayes takes exception and sets up for the DDT but Scott blocks it. Rick comes in the ring and delivers a Steinerline to the both. He clears the ring. On the outside, Scott Steinerlines both Freebirds down to the floor. Portions of the crowd gives the Freebirds a homophobic chant.

The legal action starts with Rick and Garvin. Collar and elbow. Garvin with knees to the mid section. Rick reverses an irish whip and he lifts him for a back body drop. Steinerline and a lateral press earns a 2 count. Michael Hayes is tagged in. He’s bothered by the “Freebirds Suck” chants. Rick crawls toward Hayes and he takes a dog bite on Hayes’ backside. Garvin is tagged back in and here comes Scott. Collar and elbow tie up and they run the ropes. Waistlock take down by Scott followed by a hiptoss. He elevates for a series of drop kicks on both Freebirds and the ring is cleared. The birds regroup and make their way back toward the ring.

A tag is made to Hayes who is ready to lock up with Scott. Hayes catches him with a kick to the midsection and goes on the offensive. Big chops from Hayes in the corner. He sends Scott for the ride, but he’s caught in a double armed suplex. Garvin rushes the ring and Scott gives him a tilt-a-whirl slam. The ring is clear again and the crowd loves it. Rick comes through the ropes and intimidates them down the entry way. Hayes is back in and Rick is in for the Steiners. Obscene chants from the crowd toward Hayes. Side headlock locked in by Rick. They run the ropes. After a couple leap frogs, Rick powerslams him.

Garvin rushes again but he meets the same fate. Hayes manages a cheap shot and Rick is knocked outside while the ref restrains Scott. The Freebirds take advantage with a double suplex on the floor. Back to the ring, there is a scoop slam by Hayes and Rick kicks out at 2. Running bulldog by Hayes and he gets the shoulder up again. Garvin is tagged in and he puts his boot to Rick’s head before holding him in a reverse chin lock. He rolls the dog faced gremlin over and gets a 2 count. Garvin locks in a sleeper hold and he taunts the camera. The ref checks the arm and doesn’t get 3. Back to their feet, Rick fights off the hold with elbows to the mid section. He attempts a scoop slam but it’s reversed. Garvin goes right back to the sleeper. Rick fights with elbows again. He runs the ropes but Garvin gets his knee up into Rick’s midsection. Scoop slam by Garvin and he’s going to the top rope.

Rick reverses an ax handle and delivers a face buster. Hayes is tagged in, but so is Scott. He sends Hayes for a power slam before lifting him for a military press and throwing him on top of Garvin. Rick comes in and it’s a double clothesline by the brothers before a frankensteiner is given to Hayes. Garvin rushes in and delivers a DDT to Scott while the ref backs Rick off. The ref then kicks Garvin out of the ring and Rick rushes back in for a belly to belly suplex. The legal man makes the cover and the Steiners win.
Winners: The Steiner Brothers (Scott/Belly To Belly Suplex)

  • EA’s Take: In the same way that JR’s comment about The Iron Sheik wouldn’t fly, I imagine that these days the homophobic chants from a portion of the crowd wouldn’t be tolerated by fellow fans or security. Scotty’s starting to really find his personality and hit his stride. Meanwhile, I’m coming to the realization that WCW was just chocked full of tremendous tag team wrestling for years and this is just another example.

Match #8The Dudes With Attitude (‘Mr. Wonderful’ Paul Orndorff, Junkyard Dog & El Gigante) vs. The Four Horsemen (Arn Anderson, Barry Windham & Sid Vicious)
Orndorff and Arn appear to start the action, but Anderson decides to sick Vicious on him. Orndorff is sent for the ride but he can’t spin the sunset flip. Sid picks him up by his neck and hits a short clothesline. Orndorff moves from a leg drop and he beats Vicious out of the ring. He takes care of the charging Horsemen, but Vicious is back in. Orndorff blocks the hip toss and twists Vicious into a backslide position. He can’t get the big man over until JYD helps out with a head butt. The Enforcer is in now and goes on the offensive.

Orndorff is thrown into the corner and he’s forced to fight off the whole stable. He gets back to his corner and his teammates come to his defense. The Horsemen clear out of the ring at the site of El Gigante. Arn talks strategy outside of the ring until Orndorff pulls him back in. A tag is made to JYD. Arn is sent to the ropes and JYD hits a shot to the midsection and a few head butts. Arm scrambles as the Dudes all take some shots at him. Anderson is terrified by Gigante. Windham is tagged in. He can’t make anything out of rights to JYD. The dog throws a right. Windham gets up but he’s right in front of Gigante and he backs off, also terrified.

Windham retreats and tags Anderson back in. Arn finds some success and Windham is tagged back in. Barry delivers a DDT but JYD is right back up to his feet. Windham can’t lift the big man and JYD reverses a vertical suplex into one of his own. Orndorff is back in and he dominates all 3 Horsemen. He tries to lift Anderson for a pile driver, but Windham makes the save as Vicious distracts the referee. The crowd chants ‘We Want Sid’ and they get their wish. Vicious grabs a reverse chin lock. Orndorff frees himself but Vicious catches him in a power slam and a 2 count. Vicious lifts Orndorff to the corner and Windham is tagged back in.

High vertical suplex and Orndorff kicks out at 2. Anderson is tagged back in and he gives a knee to the kidney. Orndorff reels as Windham is tagged back in. Straight right by Windham. Football tackle by Windham, but on the next come back Orndorff delivers a desperation elbow. JYD is tagged back in but he is triple teamed and tossed over the top rope. The Horsemen gloat but here comes the 7’7” Gigante. He clears the ring with some basic shoves. The referee calls the match for throwing JYD over the top rope.
Winners: The Dudes With Attitude (Disqualification)

  • EA’s Take: There are many examples of guys getting over despite having very limited working ability because they have a certain size or loop. The two most over guys in this match were definitely #5 and a distant #6 in terms of technical ability to work at this point. Gigante literally did NOTHING in this match, but The Horsemen sold the story that they didn’t want any part of him and he subsequently got the biggest pops. The three guys who best knew what they were doing (Orndorff, Anderson and Windham) worked most of the actual wrestling spots while the big men got the cheers.

In the summer of 1992, the WWE traveled to Wembley Stadium in England and delivered an unforgettable event. One of the Main Events saw the Macho Man, Randy Savage, defend the WWE Championship against the man who had retired him a year earlier, The Ultimate Warrior. The other Main Event saw Bret “Hitman” Hart defend his IC Championship against hometown hero, The British Bulldog. It ended up being one of the greatest IC title matches in history and here, on this Episode, the guys do a watch-along of that phenomenal battle.
