Andrew’s TNA iMPACT! Results & Match Ratings: 2.1.2024

So in the second official iMPACT! of the rebrand to TNA, we get a show main evented by tag team wrestling! Nic Nemeth will also be in action, most likely giving us some movement in his first storyline of his TNA career. Pretty sure Myers is in action against Kevin Knight as well, but beyond that, not really sure how this show will fill out. Maybe more Dior commercials from Ash by Elegance?

TNA posted this picture, so I figured its best to place it at the top. How to watch iMPACT! depending on where you live.

Results:

Nic Nemeth vs Trey Miguel w/Zachary Wentz

Wentz distracts Nemeth before the bell, so as soon as the bell rings, Trey flies at him and drives him into the corner. Trey starts to get cocky and then Nemeth clocks Trey with a Dropkick. Trey powders, Nemeth tries to follow, but Wentz plays interference. This allows Trey to slide back into the ring and hit a Tope con Hilo, laying out Nemeth. They head back in, Trey keeps the offense up, distracts the ref and Wentz takes a cheap shot.

Nemeth slowly fights to his feet, gets some space and deflects Trey’s first attempt at offense with a Back Elbow, then he just side steps a Spear so Trey eats post. Nemeth goes for a Fireman’s Carry move, Trey claws the face and shoves Nemeth into a different post and keeps on him. Trey does the old Ziggler Hip Swivel (or Rick Rude, same difference), then Trey goes for a Springboard and eats Dropkick. Quickfire Clotheslines, Stinger Splash, Neckbreaker and 9 Short Elbow Drops with the 10th adding a jump for emphasis and the crowd counted along. So Nemeth is still doing a good job trying to distance himself from the Ziggler gimmick, he gets the Superkick countered into a Cradle for 2 and Nemeth immediately hits a Fame Asser for 2.

Going to the corner Nemeth is sizing up Trey for something, but Wentz grabs his ankle to stop it. The referee ejects Wentz and Wentz freaks out, Enzuigiri from Trey into a Meteora for 2. Trey starts tuning up the band, and lets see how Nemeth gets out of it. OH! NEMETH hits his own Superkick first and Trey is out cold! Nic gets the win.

As Nemeth is heading up the ramp, Maclin jumps him, throws him back in the ring and beats down Nemeth. Wentz is also back in the ring, the Rascalz and Maclin work together to lay out Nemeth. Double Superkick from the Rascalz into K.I.A. from Maclin and Nic is down. I’m wondering is Myron Reed didn’t sign with TNA so Maclin is currently aligned with Rascalz. But who will Nemeth get to help out?

This might be Kon’s best promo since the early days of NXT Ascension. But I’m just giddy that The Design is dead. They became a sad job squad and I got very sick of them very quickly.

Bailey could be a nice buddy for Nemeth. I wonder if that means we’ll see Trent Seven and Bailey team with Nemeth once Trent can make it tapings. 

Decay (Havok & Rosemary) vs Mila Moore & Savannah Thorne

Oh look, jobbers! 

Mila starts and she tries to just avoid Rosemary early (smart), but Rosemary bites her face off and then puts her in the Upside Down before Mila tags out. Savannah with a big Shotei Bitch Smack, and Rosemary grins and tags in Havok. Savannah walks backwards, looks scared, says she wants Rosemary and Havok grins. Thorne tries to tag out but Mila hops off the apron. Savannah gonna die, we all know it.

Not sure in cringe or charming in a 90s MTV low budget kind of way. Sifl and Olly come to mind. 

Brian Myers w/Eddie & Alisha Edwards vs Kevin Knight

Early back and forth goes in Knight’s favor. Every time Myers tries to get some space, Knight counters things into a High Spot. It’s not until Myers powders and walks up the ramp that he’s finally able to take advantage of Knight’s inexperience. Rams his back into the apron and then a Back Body Drop on the floor allows Myers to roll back in and let the count happen.

Knight beats the 10 count and eats a few boots. Myers gets chided by the crowd but he Whips Knight into the far corner forcefully bouncing the kid off the buckles. Then Myers just ragdolls and big brother’s Knight a bit before locking in a Chin Lock to try and wear down the flier. Knight does fight out, but as soon as he hits the ropes, Myers slides under and does that Sliding Trip of his. As Knight continues to try and find an opening, Myers cuts him down and keeps him grounded. Snapmare into another Headlock, Knight fights back to his feet again, attempted Pop-Up Powerbomb, but Knight changes it up to a Dropkick and lays out Myers.

Myers is finally on the back foot, Knight throws a few punches, ole him to the outside and then hits a classic Plancha to wipe out Myers. Throws him back in the ring, Myers is back up, huge hang time Lariat for 2! Myers tries to catch Knight running the ropes, but Knight jumps over the Lariat and Thrust kick to the teeth into a Jumping DDT, but Myers grabs the rope. Myers powders, Knight gathers him, tries to get back in the ring, Myers kicks the rope, rope assisted Low Blow, Implant DDT for 2! Roster Cut is intercepted with a Dropkick that sends Myers across the ring. Charging, Myers over the back, Knight holds on, tries to come back in, Myers ducks, and as Knight turns around he eats a Roster Cut! Myers wins!

Alisha and Eddie get in the ring to celebrate with Myers, they look like they might do something to Knight, but Kushida runs in for the save. Small faceoff, but Eddie and Myers bail saying they’ll say when that match happens.

Frankie’s promo is the delusional route where he claims he saved TNA, he’s sick of getting passed over and taken for granted, and if he needs to walk alone…so be it. He gives everyone permission to hate him now. So Kaz thinks he’s Nas telling everyone “You can hate me now”. 

Deaner vs PCO

Deaner comes out to lament The Design being dead, and things that are dead can’t come back to life. So cue PCO’s entrance. Now Deaner gets to die from the French Canadian Frankenstein. 

No one cares, PCO gonna eat Deaner for lunch, even Stevie Wonder can see the outcome. Falling Inverted DDT into a PCO-Sault. Design over.

Kon hits the ring, lays out PCO, then lays out Deaner. So Kon is trying to establish himself as a legit big man threat, “snaps” Deaner’s neck. PCO sits up, Kon grabs him by the skull with the Claw and uses a Claw Slam holding him down with the Iron Claw and suffocating PCO.

Masha Slamovich w/Killer Kelly vs Jody Threat w/Dani Luna

They just charge at each other, throw hands, Jody gets the early offense, throws her into the corner, corner Lariats as she walks out and tries to fire for a charge but Masha hits a Waterwheel Kick to drop Threat. Snapmares with the hair, about 5 times, into a big PK for 2. Masha follows up with Headbutts and a Snap German for another 2. Masha is stalking a bit and laying in some deliberate Sambo kicks. Masha drops her head early after the Irish Whip so Sunset flip but no, Roll-Up but no. Masha tries to slow things with a German Suplex but Jody turns it around and throats Masha on the middle rope. Jody goes for her Double Knees move, but Masha moves and they trade positions as Masha just lays into her with a flurry of Shortarm Lariats.

Jody catches Masha with a Pump Kick sending her sprawling to the middle rope to finally hit her Double Knees into German Suplex spot. Masha slips the Scoop Slam, Kelly grabs Jody’s foot during a rope run, Dani lays her out, but Jody is distracted and eats a Russian Death Device! Masha wins.

Two out of Three, Match One: Grizzled Young Vets vs The ABC

Bey and Gibson start off, but Bey tags in Ace quick and we get some fast tandem action from the champions. After weathering the storm, Gibson tags in Drake and they try a tandem move of their own, but Ace manages to fight both men back to his corner and Bey tags. A little tornado action before things start to calm down and Gibson with Bey seem to be legal, but Bey just isn’t relenting control. He tags in Ace, they hit some quick offense, a 2 count and tags out to Bey but Gibson actually manages to stifle the offense. Lariat into a Sliding Kick and then Drake jumps off Gibson to lay out Ace with a flying Forearm.

At this point the GYV get gritty and slow the match down. Gibson tags back in, Rocket Launcher into the bottom rope, stomping on Chris’ throat, and just a lot of solid isolation. Drake tags, Hip Attack into Forearm, into a Spinning Heel Kick from Drake to lay out Bey and taunt Ace. Bey finally gets to Ace, a little Click Click Boom, Double Dropkicks on both GYV and Ace keeps the hot tag moving. Corkscrew Brainbuster, big kick gives Ace a 2 count. Gibson gets denied, 1-2-Sweet called for but Drake fights it off. Frog Splash from Bey, only for 2. GYV stop the 1-2-Sweet again after Ace tags in. Ace tries a few things but Gibson gets in the way, Drake with a Blindside Dropkick and the GYV have control but look frustrated. Drake just rains down Forearms and insults as Ace is getting rocked.

Doomsday set up, but Bey saves, Drake jumps and Ace with a beautiful Round House Kick. Tandem TKO from ABC …but Drake breaks it up! Tornado time! Punches for everyone! Assisted Shiranui is blocked from the GYV, ABC hits the Double Enzuigiri, Bey dives on Gibson, ABC try to call for a finish but Drake gets involved. Ace with his Handstand Counter Kicks, into a Fosbury Flop! Drake takes a cheap shot on Ace but grabbing the scarf to catch Ace unawares. GRIT YOUR TEETH! GYV get match 1.

Overall Score: 6/10

This show had a little bit of everything, but sadly that’s not everyone’s cup of tea. If you came for legit wrestling, its a little lackluster, save for the main event. If you care about undercard wrinkles or storyline beats, then this had a ton of spots. Everything from The Good Hands potentially being hounds for Mustafa Ali, Maclin aligning with The Rascalz, The System taking out Kushida to send a message, Jordynne’s Royal Rumble vlog, Knockout Tag potential drama and AJ Francis trying to see where he fits in TNA.

Nothing egregious, but nothing brilliant either. Decent show, hopefully we get a little more energy from the subsequent shows before No Surrender. But let’s not overlook the best thing to come from tonight, THE DESIGN IS DONE! THANK CHRIST!
