Backstage: Missy Hyatt is getting ready to be the first woman to conduct an interview in the men’s locker room. She enters to immediately find Stan Hansen whose mouth is dripping with tobacco. He screams at her and runs her out.

Match #5: The Young Pistols (Tracy Smothers & Steve Armstrong) vs. The Royal Family (Rip Morgan & Jack Victory)
The match starts with a brawl. The Royal Family takes controls with clotheslines. Steve Armstrong is dumped to the floor, The Family tries an Irish whip with double clotheslines on Smothers. He ducks and Armstrong flies off the top with a double cross body. The Pistols drop kick the Family to the outside. Official action starts, but with Smothers and Morgan but the lights in the arena appear to go out. Spotlights come on and the match continues. Morgan takes control early. A hammerlock sends Smothers into the corner. Smothers is able to reverse a wristlock but Morgan gets it right back. Side headlock by Morgan. Smothers tries to strength out but cannot immediately. Smothers with forearms to the midsection.

Irish whip to the Pistols corner. He climbs the turnbuckles, tags in Armstrong and monkey flips Morgan. Armstrong is in and Morgan receives a double drop kick. Victory rushes the ring and also receives one. The Royal Family rolls out of the ring to regroup. The action restarts with Armstrong and Victory. Jack with some quick strikes and a scoop slam. A quick tag is made back to Morgan who is greeted with an arm drag. Armstrong stays on the arm. They run, and Victory lands a football tackle. Collar and elbow tie up, side headlock by Victory and another shoulder block is hit. Another tie up, this time Armstrong grabs the side head lock. A blind tag is made to Smothers and Victory gets a double shoulder block.

Collar and elbow and Smother grabs a wrist lock, he twists his opponent to the mat and hands on. Armstrong is tagged back in and Victory is double chopped down. Victory misses a clothesline but Armstrong misses a cross body press. Morgan is tagged in and stomps on Armstrong. A quick tag back to Victory who continues to soften Armstrong. Sharp rights in the corner and another exchange is made by the Family. Armstrong is sent for the ride and receives a big elbow and kicks out at two. Victory is tagged back in and he drives Armstrong’s head into the mat. Armstrong tries to fight back. Irish whip by Victory and Armstrong gets his boot up. Royal Family makes their tag first but Armstrong is able to get to his corner.

Smothers fights off both his opponents with rights and superkicks. Morgan is sent for the ride and a flying elbow. Morgan rolls to the apron. When Smothers goes for the ropes, Morgan gets his boot up and Victory clotheslines him over the top rope. Morgan sends him into the ring post. Morgan rolls him back in and Victory delivers straight rights and Smothers goes down with an elbow. Morgan is in and holds Smothers in a bearhug. Smothers fights back, runs the ropes, ducks a clothesline but runs into a spinebuster. Smothers kicks out at two and Victory is tagged in. Double belly to back suplex by The Royal Family. Victory grabs a bear hug.

They exchange rights and Victory makes the tag. Morgan kicks him into the corner before another quick tag. Irish whip and an assisted lariat by The Family. Steve Armstrong breaks up the pin. Victory kicks Armstrong out onto the runway while Smothers receives a big elbow. The Family sets up for their double team, face first vertical suplex. Armstrong runs back in the ring and hits a drop kick allowing Smothers to fall on top of Morgan and the Pistols pick up the 1-2-3.
Winners: The Young Pistols (Smothers/Dropkick)

  • EA’s Take: That finish could have been a disastrous botch if they didn’t let go of Smothers’ head at the last second. Otherwise, not too much of a story to tell here, just a solid tag team bout. The Royal Family is smothered with the horrible gimmick, but I’d classify them as “they can do some things”. The Southern Boys have also now been rebranded as The Young Pistols, who I always found to be fairly enjoyable to watch in teh ring.

In The Arena: Standing by with Tony Schiavone is ‘Diamond’ Dallas Page, DDP says there is no way Teddy Long could match wits with him and he has a bone to pick with WCW for overlooking The Fabulous Freebirds. He’s interrupted by Theodore R. Long who gets in his face and says he thought they were friends and he tried to give Page the opportunity of a lifetime. He says that Page is responsible for the rumors of Doom breaking up.

Match #6 – No Disqualifications: ‘Z-Man’ Tom Zenk vs. Terry Taylor w/Alexandra York
Collar and elbow tie up and Taylor quickly scoots out of the ring. Another tie up and a side headlock by Taylor. Z Man takes him over with a hip toss and a drop kick. The two get in a shoving match until Zenk slaps him across the face. Taylor rolls out and checks in with York. Taylor slowly returns, the two tie up and Zenk is backed into the corner. Taylor with a right hand but Zenk retaliates. Taylor retreats again. Collar and elbow, side headlock takedown by Zenk. He hangs onto the side headlock. He sends Taylor and takes him down with a shoulder tackle.

Another side headlock takedown by Zenk and he holds on. The two roll around for a couple attempted pins. Back to vertical and Zenk is backed into the corner. Clean break and Taylor steps outside to check in with York again. Another tie up, and Taylor abuses Zenk in the corner. Zenk fights back with a series of rights and lifts Taylor with a back body drop. Another side headlock takedown by Zenk. Taylor to his feet, but Zenk runs up the turnbuckles and pulls him back down.Vertical base and Zenk to the corner.

This time, Taylor doesn’t break clean and uses the head butt.  Irish whip and a belly to back suplex by Terry Taylor. Outside of the ring and Taylor uses TV chords to choke Z Man. He reminds the ref this is no DQ. Back to the ring and Taylor kicks his opponent on the head. Z Man fights back, but it’s cut off with an eye poke. Back breaker by Taylor. He goes for a pin but Zenk’s foot is on the ropes.  Zenk tries to get Taylor over with a sunset flip. Taylor can’t get the ropes and Z Man gets a two count. Back to their feet and Taylor is quick with a clothesline. He applies a Camel Clutch and the ref checks in with Zenk.

Up to their feet, Zenk ducks an elbow and sends Taylor over the top with a clothesline. Both men brawl on the outside. Zenk is ran head first into the railing. Taylor rolls him in and gets a two count. Knee to the head from Taylor but he still cannot get three. Zenk reverses an Irish whip but Taylor comes back with a clothesline and another two count. Taylor argues that the count was too slow. Z Man is sent for the ride, stops short and lands a neck breaker. Taylor is sent for the ride and runs into a big super kick. Taylor gets his foot on the rope. Z Man sends him again, this time for a power slam but can still only muster two.

Single leg pick up by Taylor but Zenk leaps with a karate kick. Zenk heads for the top rope and lands a flying cross body, but the referee is distracted by York who is on the apron. Zenk gets up to get the referee’s attention, Taylor pops up and rolls Zenk up for the victory.
Winner: Terry Taylor (Schoolboy)

  • EA’s Take: Solid match between the two. Taylor and York’s “computer” gimmick was probably fresh in 1991, but it’s hilariously corny watching it 25 years later. Taylor quickly switching sides and joining York a couple of months after facing her guy Michael Wallstreet was due to Rotunda jumping ship to the WWF. The match was a well worked one by both men, but by and large, I forgot about the stipulation because very few things happened that were relevant to it. This is also like the opposite end of our last match where the heel, Landel, is the put-over guy. For this time, it’s really become Z-Man’s role on the babyface side.

In the summer of 1992, the WWE traveled to Wembley Stadium in England and delivered an unforgettable event. Headlined by two epic matches, this was the event that truly made Summer Slam feel more like WrestleMania than ever before. One of the Main Events saw the Macho Man, Randy Savage, defend the WWE Championship against the man who had retired him a year earlier, The Ultimate Warrior. The other Main Event saw Bret “Hitman” Hart defend his IC Championship against hometown hero, The British Bulldog. It ended up being one of the greatest IC title matches in history and here, on this Episode, the guys do a watch-along of that phenomenal battle.
