This past Sunday, Roman Reigns finally ended Brock Lesnar’s Universal Championship reign at WWE’s SummerSlam, a run of 504 days for ‘The Beast Incarnate’. While ‘The Big Dog’ has arguably become the company’s most polarizing figure, it appears as if Lesnar’s reign isn’t the only streak that Roman has stopped.
According to The Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Reigns has also surpassed John Cena as the company’s top merchandise seller, a title that Cena has held for a number of years. Of course, Cena’s time in WWE has been few-and-far between over the past couple of years, putting more work into Hollywood, especially this year with roles in Blockers, Bumblebee and now currently working on Project X.
On the recent edition of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer remarked that Reigns overtaking Cena as the company’s number one merchandise mover is something “people hate to hear that it’s true”. With regards to how ‘The Big Dog’ receives mixed reactions in arena’s across the country, Meltzer stated the following:
“They [WWE] learned from John that people booing you on TV doesn’t mean crap so no matter how much you boo, as long as you buy your tickets. As long as he’s gonna sell more merchandise than the other guy.”
