ROH News: Six-Man Proving Ground Match Set For Honor Reigns Supreme

Published

ROH Honor Reigns Supreme
The Kingdom will be in Six-Man action at Honor Reigns Supreme!

After Final Battle weekend, Ring Of Honor is now off until the New Year rings in as they head to Atlanta on January 12th for Saturday Night At Center Stage, followed up the next night in Concord, North Carolina for Honor Reigns Supreme.

Already announced for Honor Reigns Supreme is an ROH World Title bout, as the reigning champion Jay Lethal will defend against a former titleholder in Dalton Castle (see that announcement here). Today, the next match for the event has been revealed as Luchasaurus, Shane ‘Hurricane’ Helms and Delirious will get their chance at an ROH World Six-Man Championship opportunity when they meet the current titleholders The Kingdom in a Proving Ground Match:

The Best Wrestling on the Planet returns to Concord, N.C., on Sunday, Jan. 13 for Honor Reigns Supreme at Cabarrus Arena. The top stars in Ring of Honor will do battle on a can’t-miss show that will be streamed live worldwide for HonorClub.

All roads lead to the G1 Supercard, co-promoted by ROH and New Japan Pro-Wrestling, at sold-out Madison Square Garden on April 6, 2019, and the happenings in Concord undoubtedly will have an impact on the historic show.

A Proving Ground Match has been signed for Concord, as ROH World Six-Man Tag Team Champions The Kingdom (Matt Taven, TK O’Ryan and Vinny Marseglia) take on Shane “Hurricane” Helms, Delirious and Luchasaurus. If the masked trio win the match or last the entirety of the time limit, they will receive a future shot at the ROH World Six-Man Tag Team Titles.

PROVING GROUND MATCH
ROH WORLD SIX-MAN TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS THE KINGDOM (MATT TAVEN, TK O’RYAN AND VINNY MARSEGLIA) vs. SHANE “HURRICANE” HELMS, DELIRIOUS AND LUCHASAURUS

One trio has stood above the rest since the inception of the ROH World Six-Man Tag Titles more than two years ago, and that would be The Kingdom. Taven, O’Ryan and Marseglia won a tournament to become the inaugural champions and have held the titles more times (three) and more days (216) than any other team.

The Kingdom defeated two of the most celebrated groups in pro wrestling to begin their second and third reigns, knocking off SCU (Christopher Daniels, Frankie Kazarian and Scorpio Sky) and The Elite (Cody and The Young Bucks), respectively.

The Kingdom has never faced a team quite like the one they’ll be facing in Concord, however. Helms, Delirious and Luchasaurus are three of the most unorthodox competitors in ROH.

Although the three masked men have never teamed together, Helms and Delirious have joined forces in traditional tag matches on a couple of occasions. They upset two-time former ROH World Tag Team Champions The Addiction (Daniels and Kazarian) this past June.

Can Helms, Delirious and Luchasaurus pull an upset in Concord and earn a title opportunity? Join us in person or watch live on HonorClub to find out!

What a start to the tournament!

Did your picks win points?

The AEW Continental Classic is underway, with almost everyone competing. Check in here if you haven’t seen the winners and losers of week 1!

Here are your Gold League standings!

  • Jon Moxley: 1-0, 3 points
  • Swerve Strickland: 1-0, 3 points
  • Jay White: 1-0, 3 points
  • Rush: 0-1, 0 points
  • Mark Briscoe: 0-1, 0 points.
  • Jay Lethal: 0-1, 0 points

Here are your Blue League standings!

  • Brody King: 1-0, 3 points
  • Claudio Castagnoli: 1-0, 3 points
  • Daniel Garcia: 0-1, 0 points
  • Eddie Kingston: 0-1, 0 points
  • Bryan Danielson: Yet to Compete
  • Andrade El Idolo: Yet to Compete

My Thoughts:

Nothing too crazy, nothing too wild, this tournament only just got started. The only disappointing point is that they could not get Bryan “cleared to compete” Saturday night. Not sure how much of that is shoot given the bad eye, but this was kinda the problem of wanting him in the tournament over tons of other choices. Bryan wants to face Okada for WrestleKingdom 18, how is Bryan supposed to do that at his best if he’s also gonna be in a round robin, doing five top level matches in about as many weeks? And it takes away from Andrade being able to do something. Also a little surprised we didn’t even hear from Andrade on Saturday.

Now as we heard on Saturday, round two’s matches are set. Gold League will see Mark Briscoe VS Rush, White VS Swerve, and of course, Moxley VS Lethal. Nice variety there, a couple 0-1 guys facing off, as well as two 1-0 guys, and then 1-0 VS 0-1. No offense to Lethal, but he feels like an 0-2 going up against Moxley. Hard to call the other ones but that’s the fun of it. Meanwhile, Blue League sees Brody VS Claudio in a showdown to be 2-0, then Bryan and Andrade finally jump in, Bryan against Eddie and Andrade against Garcia. Sadly, feels like Eddie and Garcia are going 0-2, no way Tony Khan is booking Bryan and Andrade to lose their first shots.

In fact, that could be half the reason they did wait on those two, that’s almost too good for just a first round opener. But I still would’ve done it, same as NJPW does stuff like that for round robins, which this is all modeled after anyway.
