An insane opener between three great tag teams! But can Best Friends do it all again when AEW returns to Chicago?

But the Dark Order have a message for Best Friends! Hopefully Trent and Chuckie enjoyed their win. The Dark Order have a long list of targets, but their first will be Best Friends. They promise to make it long and painful. “All Hail the Dark Order.” The lights drop, and when they come back up… the Dark Minions are here! Best Friends stand their ground but the minions don’t attack. Then why are they here? The lights drop again, and then come up… The minions are gone! What power does the Dark Order possess? Will they be in the lead towards the AEW World Tag Team Championships?

The Elite are upset.

Nothing AEW has promised them has come true. They were promised private jets, luxurious hotel rooms and gourmet food, but got economy, tents, and cheese sandwiches! They don’t even have a real pool!

Kenny Omega is also upset because their bags haven’t arrived. But there is good news. The seamstresses are working on new gear! It’s gonna be amazing! The budget will cover it, guys. Fyter Fest, yo! Is it going to work out? Nick has hits doubts. Matt says it’s actually great. Though it took like half the budget. But the models will have to be let go… QT Marshal takes care of choosing who stays and who goes. In their place: mannequins!

Shhh! The AEW Librarian, Leva Bates, is here.

And she finds the other librarian, Peter Avalon, in the tent. He rips up the tent?! And throws it into the kiddie pool? There goes the deposit. And he even wrecks one of the mannequins! That’s just mean. Bates speaks. “This audience is full of gamers.” But why are they wasting time with games and not reading books? Daytona says, “We Can’t Read!” But Bates and Avalon say that there are more than just comic books and manga. There are real words in these! Just trust in them: read books. Because Leva and Peter are both the Librarian. Shh…! But here to make some noise, it’s Allie!

The reunion was successful! Omega and the Bucks win some big momentum towards their respective Fight for the Fallen matches! Will Omega be able to keep this up against a veteran like Cima? Will the Young Bucks prove they’re better brothers than the Rhodes boys? Is Cody even going to be there for that match? As for Laredo and the Lucha Brothers, will they continue to bring the AAA into AEW?

Unsanctioned Match: Jon Moxley VS Joey Janela!

Technically this match is not the main event, because AEW can’t even officially approve of these two crossing paths in the ring. However, this was going to be the only way to have these two passionately violent and reckless men have an even remotely safe encounter. The lights turning off and turning back on signal that this is a match where anything goes! Will AEW’s second event already be its bloodiest? Or will both these manage to keep their bodies in one piece?

The Lunatic and the Bad Boy are ready to go but are oddly calm with the bell. Janela and Mox get face to face, but then Janela pie faces Mox. Mox keeps his cool, to then kick and CHOP away! Mox whips but Janela holds ropes. Janela sends Mox out and then runs, to DIVE! Direct hit and they go into barriers! Moxley staggers away but Janela is right after him with haymakers. Moxely hits back and throws Janela over railing! Fans truly get a front row view as Moxely punches Janela and chops him around. Janela chops back then clubs Mox towards barriers. Janela dumps Mox over and then throws more forearms. He throws Moxley into the post, then goes looking under the ring. Janela brings out a table! Janela stands it up and then borrows a prosthetic leg! He bashes Moxley, but then Moxley throws Janela into steps!

Moxley swags about as he goes looking for something, too. He brings out a classic chair and tosses it in the ring. Moxley fetches Janela and drags him in for big forearms. He has the chair and scoops Janela with it, for a chair slam! Janela writhes while Moxley takes a seat. Moxley doesn’t even care his eyebrow bleeds already. Janela throws forearms and then puts Moxley in a corner. Janela CHOPS Moxley to take a seat then fores off more. He climbs up top and aims, leaps, but swantons onto only the chair! Moxley got clear and let Janela crash and burn! Moxley covers, TWO! He fires off fists and elbows to Janela’s head, then goes back out. Moxley goes looking again, and brings out a chair wrapped in barbed wire! Because Moxley probably prepared this one himself!

Janela crawls to a corner but Moxley stomps him out. Moxley scoop slams Janela then returns to his barbed wire chair. Moxley puts that chair on Janela to STOMP it into him! Fans call Mox a “Sick F*ck” and he takes a bow! Moxley climbs up, but Janela SHORYUKENS! Janela throws enziguris and forearms, then climbs up to join Moxley. SUPER STEINER onto the barbed wire! And then SMACK with it on Moxley’s back! Cover, TWO! Moxley writhes in pain as his back starts to bleed. Janela grabs himself a second table and puts that in the ring. Fans cheer as Janela starts setting it up in the corner. Moxley stands and fireman’s carries Janela, but he isn’t sure which table to use. He goes for the one outside, but Janela holds on! Janela forearms Mox back and wants to suplex!

Mox fights Janela off then joins him on the apron, only for Janela to Russian Leg Sweep them both, through the table! Fans chant “A E DUB!” as Janela stands up from the wreckage. Janela throws Moxley in but Moxley SPINEBUSTERS him through that other table! Moxley slumps out of the ring from all the pain, and brings out a third table! Then a fourth! He sets both tables up by the ring, but Janela flips him off. Moxley cusses Janela out as he throws down hands! Moxley then goes out to find more things. He has a wood panel with barbed wire! Was Moxley doing that all himself? Fans again know Moxley is a “Sick F*ck” as he goes to Janela.

Moxley scoops Janela, but Janela slips out. Janela runs but has to stop himself. Moxley kicks but Janela denies Death Rider. Janela fireman’s carries, to Death Valley Drive Moxley through the barbed wire board!! Janela drags Moxley out of the steel thorns to cover, TWO! Fans duel and rally as Janela starts punching Moxley. Moxley fires back and its a brawl! Janela gets the edge and throws one extra big one! Moxley sits down but comes back with a LARIAT! Moxley has his barbed wire chair back but he ditches that for his table idea. He drags Janela up for a powerbomb, gets him up for a Canadian rack, but Janela slips out to SUPERKICK! And then SUPERKICK him to the apron!

Janela checks under the ring real quick, and finds a ladder! This has officially become a TLC match! Moxley gets up as Janela sets the ladder up. Moxley stops Janela before he can do more, and the two brawl outside again. Janela bounces Moxley off the steel steps again and again, then puts him on the two tables. Janela leaves Moxley behind to go to the ladders! Fans plead, “Please Don’t Die!” But Janela goes all the way up, and LEAPS! Macho Elbow through the tables! Fans lose their minds all over again as the referee checks on both men. Both men are somehow okay to continue, and Janela is up first. Janela moves table wreckage around to go in search of more. There’s a second board of barbed wire?! Fans have to be careful as Janela drags that out and makes it a bridge!

Janela goes in search of Moxley, who is in the ring. Mox gets him with a DDT! Moxley drags Janela up in a fireman’s carry, to Death Valley BOMB Janela through the board!! Now it’s Janela’s turn to be stuck in the wires! Fans still love “A E DUB!” even though this technically has nothing to do with them. Janela frees himself from the wreckage, but not without scraping himself on the wires. Mox drags Janela into the ring and stalks him like a shark with blood i the water. Fans fire up as Janela throws slaps. Moxley throws knee after knee after knee into Janela’s face! But he isn’t done, because he brings out some kind of bucket. But what’s in the bucket? A bag. And in the bag is…? THUMBTACKS!

Moxley grabs Janela’s boot and starts undoing it? And the other one! He exposes Janela’s feet! Again, Moxley proves he’s a “Sick F*ck” as Janela is without even socks! Moxley stands Janela up, but Janela fights back! Janela avoids some tacks, but gets a kick and an X-Plex onto the tacks! Janela refuses to give up because of this, but Moxley stomps him into the tacks! Then atomic drops him onto them! Janela screams in pain from the needles in his heels! But then he just dares Moxley to give him more. He flips Moxley off! Moxley stomps Janela, and pulls out something else from the bucket! Another bag of thumbtacks! DEATH RIDER ON TACKS!! Double-edged as it is, Mox covers Janela, Mox wins!

Winner: Jon Moxley, by pinfall

The Paradigm Shift continues as Moxley gets his first win in AEW! Though, does it really count when this was an unsanctioned match? He probably doesn’t care either way, he’d do it all again if he had to. Will Moxley only up the ante next time when he goes up against Kenny Omega?

But speaking off, Omega runs down the ramp to V-Trigger! Then piledrive Mox through what’s left of one table, and bury him with the wrecking of another! Then to recreate what he did with Jericho, springboard double stomps to sandwich Moxley in it all! But Omega isn’t done, he drags Moxley up to club him up the way. They end up by the pool but Omega punches and throws Moxley past all that. Omega uses the unused musical equipment to batter Moxley more. Moxley hits back but Omega is just all over him again! Omega drags Moxley up to throw him into the drum set! Omega has the drum sticks to count himself in. He plays a drum solo on Moxley’s back! Then he has the electric guitar, to SMASH it on Moxley’s back!

Referees reprimand Omega but fans want an encore. So Omega strums the guitar before dropping it. Omega leaves, having gotten back at the Lunatic. Referees help Molxey up but he shoves them away. Omega comes back with a trash can! And he bashes the can on Mox until it’s completely dented! Omega drags Moxley up, to steal the Death Rider, and drive Moxley into the can! But Moxley grins. Will all of this only prompt Moxley to go all out at All Out?

My Thoughts:

What another great event, and this wasn’t even seen as much more a B-tier show. The Buy-In matches were great for being kickoff show matches. It makes a lot of sense for the Best Friends to win, because they and the “Dark Order” can settle things at All Out while also going forward into the tag title tournament. I feel like the winner of that All Out match is going to go far in the eventual tournament, and might even be tag title contenders. The Librarians are a pretty funny duo, and that was a decently funny and good match. Allie wins but I feel it’s so she’ll lose to Brandi. Then that “Hardcore” match was definitely more comedy than anything, but that doesn’t mean it was bad. I enjoyed a lot of that, but clearly commentary was selling this as sticking it to WWE’s Shane Best in the World storyline.

Daniels VS Cima was a solid opener, just straight up great wrestling from two guys who have been around for a long time and know what they’re doing. Great to see Cima win, he’ll have a great match at Fight for the Fallen with Omega. The Women’s Triple Threat was brilliantly done, all three women look even better than they did from Double or Nothing. It was a natural choice to have the two smaller opponents work together on and off, and also one of the underdogs to win. I just didn’t think it’d be Riho off of Nyla. But it works to make Nyla a Heel as the bigger wrestler, and then there’s clearly tension still between Riho and Yuka that can all play towards the AEW Women’s Championship race.

MJF is the perfect Heel, because he makes you hate him the right way. His promo before the Fatal 4 Way was great, and then the Fatal 4 Way was even greater. Also knowing this means Kip Sabian is the next opponent, it was an interesting move for Hangman to win. It does keep Hangman strong even with All Out a couple months away, but with the PPV events being the only things for momentum right now, losing even here would hurt Hangman. Hangman will surely win at Fight for the Fallen, too, so he’ll be red hot going into All Out against Jericho. Cody VS Darby was a pretty great match, but damn there were two spots that really hurt: Darby’s trust fall to the apron and Cody taking that unprotected chairshot.

A time limit draw was a good way for Darby and Cody to stay even, but WOW that chairshot. I would really hope most of that is kayfabe, but yikes. This obviously makes the Fight for the Fallen tag match of Rhodes VS Bucks “questionable,” but it does give us a potential Cody VS Shawn Spears program going into AEW TV. Just don’t do another one of those chairshots, it is on the same dangerous thread as the Naito-Ibushi controversy at Dominion. The Elite VS Lucha Bros & Laredo was amazing, and is definitely a great “main event.” The show really could have ended there and it would’ve been amazing. Elite wins to keep everyone strong while keeping the rivalries with Lucha Bros alive. Omega VS Pentagon II has to happen as part of AEW TV.

And then the real main event, the “Unsanctioned Match,” well, damn. That was definitely above my expectations, yet perfect for what those two madmen are known for. They really went crazy with the barbed wire, too. The creativity with the thumbtacks was great, too. Never seen anyone take the opponent’s shoes off to make him walk on the tacks. Obviously Moxley was going to win, he needs to roll on towards his match with Omega, while also still staying strong enough for his time in NJPW’s G1 Climax. It was also great for Omega to beat the crap out of Moxley as payback for Double or Nothing. I wonder if this prompts All Out to be some form of No Disqualification, maybe even Last Man Standing, because clearly this has gotten that intense in just two events.

My Score: 9/10

So I’m late to the party here since I get to have a life on occasion too, ya know?!

Analysis:

This Librarians gimmick is terrible and they know it. I say they know it since on BTE even made mention of Leva being a little delusional by saying everyone loves it and the Jackson’s weren’t expecting that take. Avalon may be an alright hand in the ring, but he’s 5 foot nothing, with a porn stache, a bad gimmick and he was Norv Fernum. Sonny is athletic and quite entertaining, but I’m not sure how far that can take him. Some moves like a Twerk-sault and the Ass Ramming corner spot are just not something mainstream fans will embrace. So I’m more curious to see how the character will evolve. As for the match…it was pretty lame.

Britt might’ve gotten a concussion early on, cause she was talking to the referee often and never seemed quite right, but Bea was a mess. Bea is a hell of a paradox. The better portion of last year in Stardom, she wasn’t good in the least bit, but she seemed to figure it out and was quite good in WOS. Plus she’s current World of Stardom Champion, so that definitely shows growth. But holy man, she was sloppy as hell in this match. Every time Shoko and Riho got some momentum, Britt and Bea would mess it all up. This could’ve been a great match, if it wasn’t embarrassing to watch at moments.

We’ve got a mish-mosh 6 man of faces versus heels, but MJF is mad at Spears for the attack on Cody. Then we’ve got Allin mad at Spears for taking the steam out of his match. Then we’ve got Joey Janela trying to get himself over, and it was a spot that made me groan. Why would you deliver a Death Valley Driver on the apron, then sell like an idiot, call out Jim Cornette, when the finish is a Death Valley Driver? The match was fast paced and fairly fun, but it made no sense aside from the Allin and Spears interactions.

Brandi does the great heel move with bringing out Awesome Kong as insurance, but neither Brandi nor Allie are strong workers…and it showed. A lot of space between moves, bad connections and the way Allie played off of interference or heel tactics just didn’t feel genuine. I do like Brandi winning marred in cheating, it’s very on the nose for how she’s portraying herself. Plus we get Aja Kong to come out and make the save for Allie and insinuate Aja and Awesome may have a match. Aja may be older, but she’s still that old school wrestler type who will rough you up just for fun. That should be good.

Angelico and Evans are nothing but flips. I can’t tolerate that team at all. They have generic heel moments with cliche moves. Luchasaurus and Jungle Boy looked like a million bucks. Dark Order is kinda terrible honestly. A few tandem moves looked alright, but generally speaking Dark Order was just boring. Luchasaurus and Jungle Boy weren’t hurt by the loss, but they are the ones to care about.

Superbad Sabian and the Hangman was a much better match than I think most initially thought. The pace got slowed down at different points, but the moves made sense and both men really got the story through. Sabian went after the injured knee since he’s a flier but also has technical proficiency. Hangman proved himself to still be a resilient babyface for people to rally behind against the egotistical dickhead Jericho.

So when Jericho sneaks up and attacks Page after the match, it just furthered the story and the fan feeling. Simple yes, but it works well.

SCU and the Luchas were just a solid tag team match. I liked Daniels getting involved after being provoked, Scorpio and Pentagon going back and forth with taunts for a while and Aubrey dropping the glove, were all entertaining moments. A little more gimmick than wrestling at times, but we still got a solid match. No complaints at all.

This CIMA/Omega match started off pretty well like it was building towards a big match. It was a lot of Omega trying to prove who he is and CIMA trying to teach people who HE is. However, it turned into a stupid move spamming match. CIMA finishes people with a Meteora, and he did like 12 of them, it was inane. If anyone got annoyed at Omega hitting 20 V-Triggers, this was the same thing. If it weren’t for the move spam, this would’ve been a damn good match. I was definitely disappointed in CIMA for playing into that spam style, when I’ve seen a good bit of his work and he’s usually better than that. Finishers and false finishes for the sake of having them don’t build suspense.

We get to the main event that BTE and a lot of the IWC were interested in after Cody’s heartfelt promo. The Bucks turned up the visceral aspect by kicking away handshake attempts and spitting at them, so that raised the heat of the match. A bunch of moments in the ring where each team shone with double teams or just stereo spots. Seeing that Dustin and Cody still had some chemistry that it had the Bucks on the ropes was nice. Working on Matt’s left arm was great since Matt has definitely gotten better at selling and being the one to get beat up the most. The Meltzer Driver gets hit on Cody, and the Bucks go over.

It looks like the Bucks wanted to have a moment to put the Rhodes’ over, but then they admit they must be running short on time as other music hits and the check presentation procession comes out.

Overall Score: 6.5/10

This was better than Fyter Fest, but still had it’s own issues. Some matches didn’t have the suspense, some spots were shot awkwardly and then we had some sloppy and stupid stuff. Sure no one lubed up and got thrown in a kiddy pool, but there’s multitudes of stupid things to do.

So yeah, with the Bucks openly admitting to why things seemed off, that’s just comes off as amateurish. Most of the production they can easily get better on by October. But, it’s one thing to have a diverse roster and another to have matches/characters that are just so far out there that casual fans won’t get it or think are just stupid. There’s a reason that “Indy stuff” isn’t seen on national TV.

Rob steps out of his comfort zone to defend AEW–something you don’t want to miss!

OK I’m about to do something out of character here – I’m going to defend AEW.  Anybody who follows me on Twitter or has read any of my previous stuff here knows that I’m not a big fan of the upstart company.  The short version is that I’m not a fan or just not as enamored with some of their top guys, particularly the Young Bucks and Kenny Omega, and I’m not big on how Cody has gone about taking shots at WWE while trying to say ‘no, we’re not starting any beefs here’.  I also am not big on how the wrestling media covers them because I think they’re ignoring a lot of the things they’re doing that would get all caps rants if WWE was doing it.  So for me to defend something they did is totally off brand for me.

So just what am I sticking up for here?  Namely, the goofy skits they did on their Fyter Fest preshow and the goofy elements of some of the preshow matches.  Now I did not see any of it but I saw that they were panned by just about everyone who cared to comment, with some even going so far as to say that if they were on a WWE show that Vince would get killed for it.  So while I won’t comment one way or the other on how good or bad the set pieces were I will wholeheartedly defend doing them on the show.  Why?  Because that’s wrestling.  Goofy characters, goofy skits, and goofy matches are as much a part of professional wrestling as blood feuds, workrate matches, and so on.  The execution matters but the existence of them has been voted on by the fans a long time ago.

Don’t believe me?  Look at the viewing numbers for all the 24/7 Championship stuff.  Look at the views for the arm wrestling match between Braun Strowman and Bobby Lashley (11 million and counting).  Look what the highest rated segment in the history of Monday Night Raw is…..not any match or even an Austin vs McMahon segment, but the ‘This is Your Life’ segment with the Rock and Mick Foley.  Or even look at the things that aren’t silly but aren’t matches, either – backstage brawls, ringside fights, etc. – those routinely get more views and draw more interest than the actual televised matches.  You might think that’s a shame but it’s reality.  No matter what anyone else tells you it’s a TV show that includes wrestling and not a wrestling show that’s on TV.

You want the hard truth?  When it comes to pro wrestling on TV in the US, there really aren’t that many people who are going to watch two or three hours of nothing but matches no matter how good those matches are.  The other stuff has always been the difference maker.  And yes, a lot of that stuff is silly.  You know what?  It’s fine!!  Don’t let these guys that go on and on about how they’d be ashamed to show some segment to someone who doesn’t watch wrestling get the better of you.  Pro wrestling in the United States is silly, simple, lowbrow, least common denominator kind of entertainment.  Even the parts that are serious border on self parody if you examine them too closely.  (After all, who in their right mind would settle a beef with a co-worker by fighting them inside a cage?)  And there’s nothing wrong with that.  You watch it because you like it; ALL OF IT, not just the parts that could pass for a legit sports competition.

At the end of the day if AEW is going to have any kind of long term shelf life they are going to have to master doing all the other stuff that goes on before and in between matches, and that’s going to be trial and error.  You write five bad comedy segments and then you get two that hit.  They’re going to need to find those two that hit, and that means ignoring all the people on the internet that are screaming ‘don’t be like the WWE!’ because quite frankly those people either don’t know what they’re talking about or are those people who I think are honestly embarrassed that they are wrestling fans and want it to change to something that they don’t feel ashamed to love.  Hey AEW, do yourself a favor and don’t listen to those guys.  Embrace your wacky side and find your way to some stuff that works.
