It’s the Survivor Series Kickoff Show!

Join Jonathan Coachman, Charly Caruso, Booker T and David Otunga in recapping and predicting all the action!

Sam Roberts and John Bradshaw Layfield are even here to talk about the action. The second-longest running WWE PPV will be the biggest it’s ever been with this “unprecedented” triple threat format! Shayna Baszler has a big opportunity but she’s coming off a big Women’s WarGames match. JBL doubts the Queen of Spades’ odds, but Sam Roberts is pretty sure she’s still the biggest name coming out of all of this. Who will be right and who will be wrong after that epic encounter?

Backstage interview with Paul Heyman.

The introduction was not good enough for him, so he gives his introduction himself. The Advocate for the reigning, defending, undisputed WWE Heavyweight Champion of the World, just the order of things works better. Brock Lesnar VS Rey Mysterio, Miracle or Massacre. The underdog, Mysterio, holding his poor injured son, Dominic, after that beating to oblivion. Mysterio used a pipe to attack Lesnar, and now rumors abound. Lesnar isn’t at 100%, tonight is the night Mysterio pulls off the miracle. Or perhaps Lesnar is a miracle killer, and simply massacres Mysterio in ways the WWE has never seen before and will make sure we never see again. Miracle or massacre, wait and see.

What are the affects of WarGames?

After all the chaos and destruction, are any of the competitors in shape for tonight’s matches? The Undisputed Era, the members of Team Ripley and Team Baszler, Baszler herself! For that matter, Kevin Owens surely surprised everyone else, especially Team Raw. Will Seth Rollins be okay with the Prizefighter risking himself like that?

Shawn Michaels joins the panel!

The Heartbread Kid is here to reveal which five are on NXT’s Men’s Team! HBK first speaks to the game plan for tonight: survive and thrive. People are implying NXT are the odd ones out, the trouble makers, and that’s exactly right! NXT is ready, and they are going to pump some life into tonight! But given WarGames, they had to wait to see who was able to compete. Without further ado, NXT Men’s Team it is Damien Priest, Matt Riddle, Keith Lee, WALTER, and Tommaso Ciampa! That’s right, even NXT UK gets in with the WWE United Kingdom Champion! This group touches on what makes pro-wrestling great! With the leadership of HBK and HHH, will this quintet conquer Raw and SmackDown?

Backstage interview with Adam Cole.

The NXT Champion lost the WarGames match but how does that affect tonight’s NXT Championship match? Cole has been on all three shows and WarGames this week! He’s not 100%, but that doesn’t change that he’s Adam Cole, Baybay. Dunne may have been a dominant UK Champion, but he’s never had a week like Cole’s had. Dunne may be Team NXT, he’s going to be treated like Raw and SmackDown. You will see what a superior champion on a superior brand looks like, and that is undisputed.

Bayley talks to the panel via video call.

The Bad Bad Bayley’s game plan is to just take over. She will do the same thing she’s been doing for seven years: be a champion. The aggression first focused on Becky Lynch and Shayna Baszler, but Bayley stepped out of the shadows. They call Bayley the underdog, and she bottled it up. It’s different now. Bayley is sick of it all, and she says Becky and Baszler have what’s coming to them, and it’s all their own fault. Which woman is more challenging for her? Neither, they’re the same. Pin one, submit one, doesn’t matter which, it is Bayley’s night. The favorite coming into this is the NXT Women’s Champion, how is the SmackDown Women’s Champions feeling? Bayley does respect Shayna Two Time for carrying on what she built. Bayley’s been doing this longer than her, but can she keep it up?

Kickoff Show – Cross Brand Tag Team Battle Royal!

Raw, SmackDown and NXT send in the best of their tag team division, but that world cup trophy signifies the Best Tag Team in the World is in this match! The OC, Street Profits and Major Bros of Raw, the Revival, Roode-Dolph, Lucha House Party and Heavy Machinery of SmackDown, and the Forgotten Sons, Breezango and Imperium of NXT are all in the ring, but who wins the first score for their brand tonight?

The bell rings and it is chaos! The Top Guys and GLORIOUS Show-Offs stay back and hit whoever comes close. They go after Fandango while other groups square off. Gran Metalik helps Lince Dorado stay in, and then toss Steve Cutler out! The Forgotten Sons are ELIMINATED! That was fast, guess they’ll be forgotten. But then Angelo Dawkins POWERBOMBS Lince Dorado out onto the Sons, Lucha House Party is ELIMINATED! Things are thinning out thanks to that, but Heavy Machinery is still too big for even two men to eliminate together. So it turns into four men! Tucker saves Otis from their fellow SmackDown superstars. Curt Hawkins tumbles out from the middle but Zack Ryder is sent out over the top! And he lands on Hawkins! The Major Bros are ELIMINATED!

Otis bumps Marcel Barthel but Barthel holds on. Fabian Aichner fights Ziggler off to go after him. Barthel saves himself while The Revival go after Tucker. The OC go after Imperium and Street Profits, but Otis bulldozes into Karl Anderson. Aichner has Ziggler, catapults but Ziggler skins the cat! Aichner goes after Ziggler but Ziggler drags him out! They’re both on the apron while Fandango goes after Tucker. Ziggler and Aichner fight on the edge with big hands and kicks. ZIggler headbutts Aichner, but Barthel gets Ziggler with a sleeper! Aichner runs in, but Roode intercepts! Roode body checks Aichner down, and ELIMINATES Imperium! And he SAVES Ziggler from falling to the floor! Roode-Dolph is safe, and they go after the Street Profits with the Revival.

But Otis drags Ziggler up for the spin cycle scoop slam! And off comes the shirt! Fans pump up with Otis as he hits the CATERPILLAR, only for The Revival and OC to toss him out! Heavy Machinery is ELIMINATED! The Revival go after Breezango while the OC beat down the Street Profits. Fandango goes out the middle rope, Breeze is thrown over the top! But Fandango keeps his friend in, with a princess carry! But then the Revival bump him off, Fandango is ELIMINATED, as is NXT! Now The OC and Revival mug the Street Profits. Dawkins helps Ford survive the double back drop, to double dropkick and ELIMINATE The Revival! The Profits brawl with The OC, but now Roode-Dolph helps out. Brand warfare doesn’t matter when they hate the same team. But then Anderson and Roode argue, and start brawling!

Gallows rocks Roode with an uppercut, Anderson helps out, neckbreaker back suplex! But Ziggler ZIGZAGS Anderson before Magic Killer! Roode dumps Gallows out but Gallows stays up. SUPERKICK gets rid of Gallows, the OC is ELIMINATED! Roode-Dolph regroups and stands off with The Street Profits! One Raw team and one SmackDown team. The two team start brawling! Roode knees Dawkins and whips but Dawkins holds the ropes. Ziggler mugs Ford but Dawkins boots Roode. Only to run into a GLORIOUS SPINE BUSTER! Roode and Ziggler work together, but the SUPERKICK hits Roode! Roode flops out the middle rope, but Ford throws Ziggler. Ziggler throws Ford instead! Ford holds on and punches Ziggler away! Into Dawkin’s SPINE BUSTER!

Ford goes up top, but Roode shoves him down! Ford holds on the ropes as he flounders about! Ziggler goes after Dawkins but is bucked off. Dawkins ROCKS Ziggler! But satellite DDT! WORLD STAR FROG SPLASH! But Roode throws Ford out, SmackDown wins!

Winners: SmackDown’s Roode & Ziggler; Raw: 0, NXT: 0, SmackDown: 1

And the blue brand is the first on the board! Is this the first of many for one of the OG brands of WWE?

Sami Zayn joins the panel.

They cannot talk about a Match of the Year Candidate match, Styles VS Nakamura VS Strong, without putting respect on the tone! Don’t treat this like it’s some other match. Realize the level of artistry in this match! Nakamura isn’t an artist, he is THE artist! Booker T doesn’t get it, so Sami wants everyone to “truly understand the caliber” of talent Nakamura is and has become. But surely Sami respects Styles and Strong, “on a certain level.” Styles is a great competitor, Strong is a great competitor, but they are not intellectual artists. It is not just something int he ring, it is a mind-set. You either have it, or you don’t. It is an intangible that you cannot measure. It isn’t just a bunch of tag lines, it is the reality! He may be underestimating Styles and Strong, but they’re underestimating the instant classic Nakamura will make this match.

But Styles was a world champion in the WWE, Nakamura has yet to be. Well a huge difference there is that Nakamura now has Sami in his corner. And when it comes to their past, it may have gone Styles’ way, but now Shinsuke has Sami, and he’s better than ever! Tonight, “you are going to see the very best of Shinsuke Nakamura.” The Great Liberator promises a masterpiece, but will it be a victory for the King of Strong Style?

Things are all tied up after the kickoff show’s three matches! The only tag team to be champions in NJPW, ROH, NXT and Raw are the winners, but will their brand join them by the end of the night?

The landscape has changed forever.

Raw and SmackDown have been riding high for decades, but NXT is here to turn things upside-down! The “main roster” is a thing of the past, because the black ‘n’ gold is bold enough to say they are on par, no, BETTER, than their older sibling shows. Monday Night Rollins, The Big Dog’s Yard, and the once developmental brand turned wrestling phenomenon are going to showcase for the sake of supremacy! Who survives Survivor Series?

Women’s 5v5v5 Elimination Triple Threat Tag: Team Raw VS Team SmackDown VS Team NXT!

We open with the new take on an old tradition! It will still be teams of five representing the brands, but with a third branch added, that’s FIFTEEN superstars all at once! The Queen, Charlotte Flair, leads Natalya, Sarah Logan and the Kabuki Warriors. The Boss, Sasha Banks, leads Nikki Cross, Carmella, Dana Brooke and Lacey Evans. The Mosh Pit Kid, Rhea Ripley, leads Candice LeRae, Io Shirai, Bianca Belair and Toni Storm. Tensions are running high on these teams made up of rivals, but which fearsome five rises above that pettiness to score another victory for their brand?

NXT and raw regroup, Shirai and Candice are down. They did suffer a lot of damage during WarGames, perhaps this is affecting their abilities now. Charlotte tags in off Asuka to stand against her fellow Horsewoman. Raw and SmackDown wait to see what happened with Team NXT. It seems Shirai and Candice can’t continue! Does that mean NXT is now down 5v5v3 already?

Rhea and her team regroup to keep going, and she again stands against Charlotte and Sasha, just like Friday. Rhea got the win last time, but things will be different in an elimination match. Surprisingly, Rhea tags out to Bianca! But the EST is ready, so the team captains tag out to Sarah and Nikki. Nikki leaps in and chops Bianca! Then she kicks Sarah into a neckbreaker! The Architect obviously saw his teammate at WarGames last night. He’s hoping Kevin can clear things up for him. It was a big moment, but for NXT. Rollins wants to know if his team is at 100%, and that means knowing Kevin’s loyalties. First off, that was about the Undisputed Era, not brands. And Kevin has a strong connection to NXT, he still loves NXT. But NXT doesn’t need him. Raw does, desperately. So don’t worry about WarGames. Tonight, KO is Raw. But Rollins questioning someone else’s loyalty? Do we need to remind him of his history? Shield fist. The tensions are growing, but will it all explode in the ring tonight?

Backstage interview with Rey Mysterio.

The King of Lucha Libre has his shot at The Beast. He finally gets a chance at revenge, and No Holds Barred might be the right stipulation. Becky Lynch speaks.

“Tonight, Survivor Series, Chicago.” Champ VS Champ VS Champ. It has been weeks of attacks, takeovers and open doors, and The Man has learned things. Shayna Baszler was training while Becky was doing what it takes to be The Man. Becky knows even a moment away from the gym puts her at a disadvantage against a “machine” like her. But there is no training that can give Shayna what Becky knows about herself. There is nothing they can do to take what Becky worked hard to get, and there is no person that can beat her down enough to keep her down.

As for Bayley, she’s been whining about being disrespected. Don’t get it twisted! Bayley has always pushed Becky, and has been the one attacking her. Becky broke her own rule of never coming looking to settle debts. It was because Becky didn’t want to fight Bayley. Becky sees too much of herself in Bayley. But tonight, Becky finally crosses that line. Will The Man come ’round and take the final Survivor Series point?

In order to get the revenge he seeks, Rey is willing to throw away the rules and restraints. This has already been called #MiracleOrMassacre, but Mysterio vows to bring both! Can he do that and take away Lesnar’s precious title?

The introductions are made as Mysterio goes from King of Lucha to Clown Prince of Crime. Heyman of course introduces Lesnar, and also says some of it in Spanish. The belt is raised, the bell rings, and the rules are thrown out on this golden grudge match!

Mysterio immediately goes out to get something from under the ring! It’s that steel pipe! Mysterio has his little friend, but Lesnar bails out of the ring. Lesnar clears the desk then drags Mysterio up, to belly2belly Mysterio onto the hood! Mysterio is writhing as the massacre begins. Then Lesnar puts the hood on Mysterio’s body to STOMP it down!

Lesnar takes time to tie his boots, because he isn’t at all concerned about Mysterio. Lesnar drags Mysterio up to a fireman’s carry, but Mysterio slides out to send Lesnar into a post! Mysterio gets in the ring while Lesnar wobbles, and Mysterio’s going for the pipe! Heyman warns Lesnar, Lesnar gets in and stops that. To then German Suplex Mysterio ON the pipe!! And then he dead lifts Mysterio for a second German! Chicago is becoming Suplex City now. Lesnar mocks Mysterio, kicking the pipe to him and daring him to use it. Mysterio crawls to the ropes, but Lesnar German Suplex again! That’s three!

But wait, is that Dominic?! Dominic has a towel, and begs Lesnar to stop! Is Dominic going to throw in the towel? Lesnar keeps him from doing that by throwing the towel away. And then he grabs Dominic! Mysterio LOW BLOWS Lesnar! Heyman panics, because Dominic LOW BLOWS, too! Mysterio SMACKS away with the steel pipe!! Dominic joins in, CHAIR SHOT to the back! Father and Son, DOUBLE 619!! And Dominic is up top, FROG SPLASH! Mysterio FROG SPLASH! Double cover, TWO!! Lesnar kicks out and Heyman is actually shocked! Mysterio tells Dominic to go back up. But Lesnar gets Dominic with a GERMAN SUPLEX! Mysterio leaps, into an F5!! Cover, Lesnar wins!

Not even two generations of Mysterios could defeat Lesnar, and Chicago is furious. Will anyone ever defeat The Beast?

Shayna Baszler stands tall with her title, literally looking down on The Man. But then Becky rises to get payback! She trips Baszler, clears off the desk, and drags Baszler up. She hip tosses Baszler onto the other announce desk! Then hops the barriers, for the Man’s Leg Drop! They crash through the table but Becky stands up! The Raw Women’s Champion may not have won, but she didn’t lose this match, either. Will we see these two fight again one day?

As for their brands, how does Raw rebound starting tomorrow on Monday? Or SmackDown on Friday? And what does NXT do to capitalize on this amazing achievement?

My Thoughts:

Except for one match in particular, everything was pretty great tonight. I’ll just say now, Lesnar’s reign is again a bunch of Vince BS. If that was going to be all it was, just get Lesnar out of the way early so we can purge it from our memories with everything else before it. That match killed the mood so that Chicago almost barely even cared about the Women’s Champions Triple Threat anymore, despite that match being great. In actual quality, I feel like Lesnar matches are worse than kickoff matches now. Speaking of those kickoff matches, we were not told about what they’d be, but they did pretty good with them. The tag team battle royal was alright, I’m a bit disappointed they didn’t try to book it about brands. It all just ended up being Faces against Heels instead. And in the end, I’m not sure SmackDown deserve to win that via Roode-Dolph. Fans liked a lot of other teams better than them, should’ve been Street Profits for Raw.

I really liked the NXT Cruiserweight Championship match, but I do not understand the point of it, other than the math needed to have an odd number of cross-brand matches. We all knew Lio Rush would win, it’s the NXT Cruiserweight Championship now, not the WWE Cruiserweight Championship. Then I was surprised and disappointed at the idea of putting the Tag Champions Triple Threat on the kickoff. But I suppose it just seems there was concern the main show would be too long if it was on the main card. In the end, it still ended up amazing because it’s there of the best tag teams around. But because of SmackDown and NXT winning a match each, it was just too predictable that Raw won here. Though in the end, it was their only win, so that’s saying something. I wonder if Roode-Dolph spins their win into a reason to challenge The New Day for the titles.

I really liked the Women’s 5v5v5, and it was very clever though also Heelish for NXT to fake injuries. It does lower Raw’s and SmackDown’s guards because they thought they had the advantage, and there were more NXT fans than Sasha fans so it’s not like NXT was seen as the Heels. Plus, Sasha is a Heel so doing Heel things to a Heel means you’re a Face. The midcard champions triple threat was so good. I half expected Sami to get more directly involved but he more or less behaved himself this match. In a match of three Heels, I was surprised no one resorted to even more Heel tactics. The OC or reDRagon could’ve easily helped out, but Strong and Styles went it alone, and Strong still won all the bigger for it.

The NXT Championship, Cole VS Dunne, was also so good. TakeOver quality after all they went through yesterday makes that even more impressive. But Cole wins, because as great as Dunne is, this perhaps isn’t the time for his own historic moment. The Undisputed Era’s story is what will lose them the titles, against Ciampa and other superstars. I assume Velveteen Dream in some capacity. Bryan VS The Fiend was pretty great, but the red light is annoying now only after two previous uses. Also shouldn’t it have been blue to match the belt? That aside, a great showing from both guys but the lull in the middle should’ve been trimmed down or something. I get we’re supposed to get horror movie menacing pacing, but that doesn’t really work when the rest of the matches to that point were pretty intense.

While fans were just so strongly behind NXT, I get that NXT couldn’t win the Men’s 5v5v5, too. I was surprised more by Damien Priest being on the time, but I suppose since NXT didn’t win, it worked out to not send someone with a bigger name *cough* Finn Balor */cough* to lose with the team. It was a bit of a shame Walter was eliminated so early, even though he was in there with some legitimately big and powerful men. The WWE United Kingdom Champion deserved a bit better, but maybe Walter wasn’t allowed to risk himself since he has to make it to TakeOver: Blackpool II. But to even things like that out, it was actually great booking for Corbin to just be insufferable and ruining his own team’s chances. It was therefore genius for Roman to help eliminate Corbin, but this will surely continue their feud on SmackDown. Lee got a great showing being the last NXT superstar, but of course Roman Reigns is Sole Survivor. It was mostly because it shouldn’t have been Rollins given the reasons fans are souring on him.

Again, screw Lesnar and Vince. However, the Women’s Champions main eventing, great choice! The Man is still very over, Baszler is just this force of nature in NXT at this point, and Bayley is rising up with pretty great Heel Heat here and there. Despite Chicago being so upset after what happened with Lesnar VS Mysterio, they just managed to muster up some enthusiasm for this match. I said last night for WarGames that Baszler would have to be part of the decision to get the right payoff, and that’s what happened! And then in the end, Baszler WINS! NXT wins, they deserve to win, they’re the real best brand, best liked brand, why wouldn’t they win the series and also win the main event?

If Bayley won, there would’ve been a series tie and I don’t think WWE would’ve even had an idea for how to settle that. If Becky won, fans would’ve been mostly okay with that, but NXT would’ve only won by default and that seems weaker. In the end, this was the best result for many reasons. Becky going after Baszler after may seem like being a sore loser, but it also allows things to circle back to Becky VS Baszler at some point to prove who is better 1v1. There was mention of Ronda Rousey, but we didn’t get anything Horsewomen VS Horsewomen related. Maybe that Becky VS Baszler story is what brings Horsewomen VS Horsewomen around in time for WrestleMania. Royal Rumble would be a good moment for that, as it basically starts the Road to WrestleMania.

My Score: 8.7/10

WWE Cruiserweight Championship Tournament Finals: Cedric Alexander VS Mustafa Ali!

Months before April 8th, 2018, this title had been vacated and a tournament had been put in place! Before they were #PRIMED and the (former) leader of Retribution, they were the Heart and Soul of 205 Live! The then 205 Live General Manager, Drake Maverick, stands with the title belt to watch as theses two finalists battle it out for that very prize!

He wants Ali to show that heart, and they speed up. Ali headscissors Alexander and then dares Alexander to show the soul. They tie up and go against the ropes and into a corner. Neither man backs down until the referee separates them, then Ali shoves Alexander.

Ali hops up, tornado DDT blocked! Alexander hangs Ali up on the ropes, then catches his breath before climbing up to join him. Fans anticipate something, and Ali resists. They brawl on the top rope, but Alexander gets the better of Ali, only for Ali to almost send Alexander tumbling down with his counter.

Ali and Alexander brawl more while trying to stand up, Ali hits Alexander with a SUPER SPANISH FLY! Even John Cena watching from the audience is stunned seeing that! Cover, TWO, and Ali can’t believe it! He shakes his head as he watches Alexander flounder about. Ali brings Alexander over to a corner but Alexander knows what that means and resists. Ali kicks Alexander, then climbs, but Alexander gets up to throw him off! Maverick and the referee check on Ali after his crash landing, but Ali is still good to go. Alexander waits as the count begins, but Ali dares Alexander to finish him. Alexander takes the bait, he puts Ali in the ring and covers, TWO!

Alexander gets frustrated, but tells Ali it’s already over. Ali shakes his head, it’s not over. Alexander kicks Ali and then stomps away in a rage! He yanks Ali up, back suplex lift but Ali slips out! Ali hits the Reverse-Rana! Alexander is dazed, and Ali gets going. Ali hops up, flying tornado DDT! Alexander lands in a drop zone! Ali goes up, and hits the 0-5-4! Cover, ROPEBREAK! Alexander survives with a foot on the ropes! Ali shouts for Alexander to stay down before he stomps him back. Ali climbs up again, 0-5-4 FLOPS as Alexander moves! Alexander scrambles to his feet while Ali drags himself back up. They run at each other, Alexander’s big back elbow rocks Ali, but he still gives another.

Alexander tells Ali “This is enough!” But clearly, it isn’t, and the third back elbow flips Ali over! Alexander lifts Ali up, for the LUMBAR CHECK! Cover, Alexander wins!!

Winner: Cedric Alexander, by pinfall (NEW WWE Cruiserweight Champion)

The Carolina Kid didn’t want to go that far, but he had no choice but to break the Heart of 205 Live. More importantly, Alexander finally proves he can win the big one! Drake Maverick personally presents the belt to Alexander, and the true celebration begins! The Age of Alexander would go on for quite a run, before running into an Aussie Juggernaut, who is featured in our next match!

Nigel McGuiness introduces the next match.

We fast forward an entire year to WM35, and Nigel was again there to see Tony Nese in his home state taking on the Australian Sensation, Buddy Murphy, in another incredible Cruiserweight kickoff to the Showcase of the Immortals!

WWE Cruiserweight Championship: Buddy Murphy VS Tony Nese!

The Aussie Juggernaut proved himself against some of the best in the Cruiserweight Division, from Cedric Alexander to Mustafa Ali to three opponents at the same time. And on the Grandest Stage of Them All, he went toe-to-toe with the Premier Athlete, a man who is a parallel to him in physique, a man who used to be his friend, and a man he betrayed over the greed for this title! But Nese had homefield advantage, and it came in handy!

The introductions are made, the belt is raised, and we begin this battle of Body Guys!

The unstoppable HAS been stopped! The Premier Athlete was the Juggernaut’s kryptonite, and now he is the new champion! We know the Premier Era ended with a Triple Threat involving Akira Tozawa and Drew Gulak, and the title itself would be integrated into the NXT system, eventually leading it to where it is today! As such, we relive a highlight of the NXT Cruiserweight Championship era!

Nigel McGuiness returns again for another match introduction.

The Cruiserweight title didn’t just make it to WrestleManias, it finally made it to NXT TakeOver thanks to Santos Escobar and Isaiah “Swerve” Scott!

NXT Cruiserweight Championship: Santos Escobar VS Isaiah “Swerve” Scott!

The year 2020 was certainly a mess, and the Irish Ace being isolated in the UK further complicated how this division worked. El Hijo del Fantasma won the “interim” title at the end of the Cruiserweight Championship Round Robin finals, with some controversy to it, but there was one man who did defeat him along the way! Swerve got his shot but was screwed over by El Legado and a loaded lucha mask! Swerve wanted revenge, but that is always hard to come by!

The introductions are made, the title is raised, and the Cruiserweight Division finally gets to TakeOver!

Down goes Escobar and the crowd fires up again! Swerve puts Escobar in the ring but Escobar bails out the side. Swerve runs and FOSBURY FLOPS Escobar down! Escobar stops at 4 because he still doesn’t want to be disqualified. Escobar reels back but Swerve puts a hand on Escobar’s mouth! No spit flies, but the fists do! Escobar clubs Swerve, reels him in, but Swerve frees himself to ROCK Escobar! And again! Swerve fires off heavy haymakers in the corner!

The ref counts, Swerve stops at 4 to throw Escobar down, for a DISCUS! The crowd is thunderous as Escobar flounders up. Swerve runs in to uppercut! Swerve snapmares Escobar for the falling EuroUpper! Escobar bails out but Swerve BOOTS him from the apron! And then again! Escobar goes down in a heap, Swerve puts him in, slingshot to somersault, ROLLING THUNDER SHOT! Cover, TWO!! So Swerve slips under, only for Escobar to kick him away. Escobar turns around, Swerve dropkicks the legs out! DRAPING DDT! Cover, TWO!!

Escobar survives again but Swerve grits his teeth. Swerve drags Escobar up with a half nelson but Escobar gets the ropes! The ref counts, El Legado returns! The ref stops Wilde from getting in, Escobar shoves Swerve and Mendoza trips him up! Gut wrench, SHOULDER BREAKER! Cover, TWO!! Swerve survives the screw job attempt! Escobar goes to the apron to follow Swerve, runs side to side, but into a pop-up that puts Escobar on the ropes! Escobar is stuck on his fantasma, Swerve throws haymakers! Swerve then hops up, and STEINERS Escobar onto Legado!! They catch him, help him up, but here comes ASHANTE “THEE” ADONIS!!

From what’s been happening on 205 Live, Adonis isn’t a fan of Legado del Fantasma, either, and he goes up to TORNILLO! Adonis wipes out Mendoza and Wilde! The crowd is thunderous as Escobar is in shock! Adonis and Swerve run off the henchmen before Swerve hurries into the ring. Escobar runs over, gets a back elbow, and Swerve goes up and in to somersault, into a CALF KICK! Fireman’s carry, PHANTOM DRIVER!! Cover, TWO!??! How?!!? Escobar doesn’t know how, but the crowd is electric! Escobar is fuming as he stomps away on Swerve over and over! Escobar drags Swerve back up, suplexes, uno amigo! Then a roll over, dos amigos!

Fans boo, they don’t think Escobar is worthy of Eddie Guerrero but he still hits all three amigos! Escobar goes up top, FROG SPLASH FLOPS!! Swerve evades and denies Escobar his Latino Heat! Swerve gets the arm, POP CULTURE!! Escobar clutches his arm but Swerve gives him a HOUSE CALL!! But that’s not it, Swerve goes up for the 450 SPLASH!! Cover, TWO!?!?! Escobar survives all of that and Swerve is losing his mind! The crowd hopes they “Fight Forever!” because “This is Awesome!” But this will end somehow, and Swerve drags Escobar up. Escobar flounders, throws Swerve out and hurries back up.

Swerve hurries after him, half nelsons him, but Escobar holds ropes for dear life! Escobar pushes Swerve back, Swerve falls and hits the bare crossbar!! It comes into play after all!! Escobar drags Swerve in, brings him up, underhooks and lifts, BUTTERFLY FACEBUSTER ACROSS THE KNEE! Cover, Escobar wins!!

Winner: Santos Escobar, by pinfall (still NXT Cruiserweight Champion)

So much fight from Swerve, and he even had a new ally fight against the minions, but Escobar always has a back-up plan! And he would continue to rule over the division in this way, even to the point of having Wilde & Mendoza help at TakeOver: Stand & Deliver! Will the tyrannical Emperor of Lucha always have this crown?

Nigel McGuiness returns once more to wrap up the show.

It has been a great experience on 205 Live to see some of the greatest title matches of all time. But speaking of great title matches, that makes you think of great champions. Just last night at TakeOver: Stand & Deliver, Escobar proved he is a great champion by winning the Cruiserweight Championship Unification Ladder match! Relive that and both nights of TakeOver on Peacock in the US and the WWE Network everywhere else! But what will see now in the future was we continue in the Era del Fantasma?

My Thoughts:

Recap episodes are always fun for looking back, but also because it’s super easy for me to cover them since it’s just copying, pasting and editing. I like the three they selected, basically giving us a look back at the last three years of the Cruiserweight Division, but it also makes us see how far 205 Live has dropped off in the WWE because Alexander, Ali and Murphy were so awesome in 205 Live. Nese is still here but more for lack of WWE/NXT not giving him more to do. Admittedly, Murphy has dropped off on RawDown, too, but at least WWE has tried with him. I almost feel like worst case scenario for Murphy is to come back and be the Aussie Juggernaut again. Escobar’s a beefy Cruiserweight, so is Murphy, let’s get something like that going again.

I am also disappointed, because it was advertised that we’d get a special look at Escobar VS Devlin, but that wasn’t there. I couldn’t have gone through the content too fast, a segment like that wouldn’t be just a few seconds long. Maybe there was another “right hand doesn’t know what the left hand is doing” moment and that information was put out without knowing what the final episode would look like. I wouldn’t mind if they gave us that segment for the aftermath NXT on Tuesday, and encored it on next week’s 205 Live, but WWE/NXT needs to get 205 Live going like how it was when Ali, Murphy and Alexander were here.

My Score: 8.1/10

All Japan’s Champion Carnival kicks off today! The Triple Crown Champion Suwama is in action as well as the Ace of the company Kento Miyahara! Check it out!

Now I haven’t kept close eyes on the product last few months, because personally, they weren’t grabbing my interest post Quarantine Comeback. But since my Puro Patronus Mathew Sarpraicone is having some computer issues, I guess I’m covering the first couple of these!

Let’s see how the tournament starts!

Ratings:

  • Shuji Ishikawa vs Koji Doi: Ishikawa wins via Thesz Press @9:09 – ** ½
  • Suwama vs Kohei Sato: Sato wins via German Suplex Hold @10:49 – ***
  • Yuma Aoyagi vs Shinjiro Otani: Otani wins via Overhand Chop @9:51 – *** ¼
  • Jake Lee vs Shotaro Ashino: Jake wins via D4C @3:44 – **
  • Zeus vs Kento Miyahara: Zeus wins via Jackhammer @18:16 – **** ¼

Results:

Shuji Ishikawa vs Koji Doi

Doi is the least recognized name in the tournament this year, and last I was aware of his was during the closure of Wrestle-1. Most of his success has come in the tag team division, but he’s no real slouch. Interestingly, Ishikawa is the newest Gaora TV Champion, but also was tied heavily to Suwama and their Violence Giant tag team.

We see Doi come out fast trying to throw Ishikawa into the corners and take him off his base. Ishikawa towers over Doi, so Doi was underneath, literally and figuratively the entire match. As Ishikawa hit most of his signature spots, including the Mushroom Stomp from the middle rope, Doi had a moment where he locked in the Rings of Saturn; but Ishikawa is just too big.

As Doi tried to keep the pressure up, rope runs, big strikes, Murder Lariat attempts from Doi but Ishikawa stifles the surge with a Fire/Thunder Driver. They both stumble up, run the ropes a bit trading lariats and charges, Ishikawa jumps, hits a Thesz Press and manages to keep Doi down for the 3 count!

Suwama vs Kohei Sato

An early card match gives us the Triple Crown champion against one of his more recent challengers! Falling short for the Triple Crown a few months ago, Sato has a little bit to prove.

The match opens as a slugfest, Suwama gets the best of things and rides the power advantage over Sato for a long time. Sato is taller than Suwama but Suwama is more powerful and controlled the pacing. Things went to the outside and the former Violence Giant kept up to the name.

When the match came back in to the ring Suwama looks to try and finish things, goes for the Rolling Lariat, but it gets blocked. Sato starts fighting back, hits a Falcon Arrow for a near fall, and then Suwama starts looking like he’s in trouble. Suwama hits the Double Chop comeback, and tries a Powerbomb, but Sato blocks it, Sato goes for a Powerbomb, but Suwama blocks it. The power struggle is tangible, but Suwama seems to be losing some of the back and forth. Sato rocks Suwama, locks in the German Suplex, and hits the German Suplex Hold.

Kohei gets on the board and avenges his loss! Depending on how the tournament shakes out, Kohei might get another shot at the title in the future.

Yuma Aoyagi vs Shinjiro Otani

The veteran Otani is putting Yuma through the paces early. He’s side stepping Dropkicks and just kicking Yuma to prove a point. Yuma tries to fire back, and then Otani continues to push off certain moves and be funny.

Yuma does manage to take advantage of his youth, but when he goes for the disrespect by attempting the Bootwash, Otani fires, lays out the younger wrestler and hits the Wash. Yuma goes to the outside, and when he turns back to the ring, Otani charges and hits a running Bootwash straight to Yuma’s face.

As Otani takes the role of the cagey veteran punishing the Young Boy, Yuma tries to find ways to come back, but things Otani stays a little ahead of the younger wrestler. Yuma gets a close moment where he locks in End Game, but Otani fights to the ropes. Otani then backs the younger wrestler down, hits Dragon Suplex, then goes for another, but Yuma blocks. Otani counters the block with a lariat, then another Dragon Suplex but Yuma kicks out at 1! Refusing to stay down, Otani goes into his bag of tricks and hits Yuma twice with Hashimoto style Overhand Chops, to finally keep the younger man down.

Jake Lee vs Shotaro Ashino

So there is some fun history between these two when Ashino brought Enfantes Terrible over to AJPW and took JIN down a peg. But then recently, Jake stole the Enfantes members from Ashino and betrayed JIN. Ashino is looking to avenge the turnabout, but Jake is trying to craft his Carnival masterpiece.

Jake definitely has the swagger of an anime villain. He widens his arms like he’s conducting a symphony and moves slowly yet deliberately. Ashino starts quick, hitting a Drop Toe Hold and going to the ground game, but Jake stabilizes. Ashino again brings Jake down after successive German Suplexes and goes for the Ankle Lock! Jake has trouble navigating it for a while, but eventually finds the ropes.

Retreating to the corner, Jake sees the referee, Ashino charges, Jake uses the referee shield and starts taking advantage. A few direct blows to the head, Giant Killing to the back of the head, followed by D4C. Jake drags the referee back, picks up the win and leaves cackling. He’s limping heavily, selling the viciousness of the Ankle Lock even in a short match, but yeah, not what I expected.

The match was used to help build Jake’s new persona and possibly give Ashino a steeper mountain to climb. But the length and abrupt end was definitely not expected. Interesting, but also a little off putting.

Zeus vs Kento Miyahara

Zeus and Kento have had great wars. There was a point a few years ago where Kento was Zeus’ hurdle, but after beating him for the Tag titles, he then gathered momentum. Zeus has beaten Kento for the Triple Crown before, has beaten him in the Carnival, and this has been one of the best rivalries of the last few years in current AJPW. Kento is of course the current generation Ace, and everyone knows that; but given Zeus’ track record and Kento’s stagnation the last year since losing the Triple Crown to Suwama, we could get something interesting.

The match starts with their usual sarcastic respect to one another during breaks and outside the ring moments. Given that they’ve had 2 5 Snowflake classics in the last 3 years, this had a lot to live up to. But at no point did it feel like retreading, since they are both in different positions comparatively, this felt like a whole new book, not an additional chapter. Zeus landed a lot of power spots while Kento combated everything with his Knees.

Kento’s usual attack of Blackouts from different angles rocked Zeus pretty hard. Zeus ate a few, grabbed a Chokeslam and they both landed for a rest spot. Zeus drives Kento into a corner, goes for an Outside-In Brainbuster and starts trying to end things. Kento goes for the Shutdown Suplex, Zeus fires out, a few big Lariats and a Jackhammer from Zeus…AND ZEUS WINS!

Overall Score: 7.25/10

Now this wasn’t a bad start to things! Sure the Ashino/Jake Lee match did not go the way I expected, it definitely told enough of a story to prove it’s going somewhere. Shinjiro Otani gets a solid start to things, Shuji Ishikawa won a match he was supposed to and Zeus/Kento ended up being a solid day 1 main event.

Kento has started on the back foot before. I guess we get to see if he wins out until the Final Day, or if he has a larger struggle. Let’s check out the Day 1 Standings!

Standings:

  1. Zeus: 1-0 – (2 Points)
  2. Shuji Ishikawa: 1-0 – (2 Points)
  3. Shinjiro Otani: 1-0 – (2 Points)
  4. Kohei Sato: 1-0 – (2 Points)
  5. Jake Lee: 1-0 – (2 Points)
  6. Kento Miyahara: 0-1 – (0 Points)
  7. Suwama: 0-1 – (0 Points)
  8. Yuma Aoyagi: 0-1 – (0 Points)
  9. Shotaro Ashino: 0-1 – (0 Points)
  10. Koji Doi: 0-1 – (0 Points)
